Betty Boop was actually styled off a singer named Helen Kane. There are letters between Max Fleischer and Grim Natwick specifically naming Kane as their reference. Esther Jones was named in a court case when Kane tried to sue Fleischer studios for making money off her image. Jones was significantly younger than Kane & Kane had been performing her act for at least a decade before Jones was even born. Jones was named in court along with 14 other contemporary singers because the defense’s argument was Kane’s act and Betty Boop herself was a product of the Jazz Age & that nobody could own that style. The idea that Esther Jones is the sole inspiration for Betty Boop was spread by an ill-researched article by PBS in 2015. PBS has since printed a retraction for that article, recognizing that they published incorrect information AND used pictures of other Black singers that they incorrectly identified as Esther Jones.

Esther Bigeon and Esther Phillips are often shown as “adult” pictures of Esther Jones, which is problematic af because A.) that erases the careers and accomplishments of Phillips and Bigeon B.) Esther Jones retired from show business by age 12. Nobody knows how she spent the rest of her life and there are no known pictures of her as an adult C.) All three of the women who are misidentified as Esther Jones in that original PBS article have different skin tones. Like how are people looking at women who are different shades and going “mmm yes, these are all the same person” ??? 🥸
