I’ve always thought Catherine modeled herself after Her Late Majesty rather than her mother in law. That story about the queen’s penny pinching ways calls to mind the queen having to tell Catherine she should buy more couture rather than high street clothes - Catherine had wanted to not presume with Charles’s money. Whereas Megsy came in trying to bankrupt the man! She LOVES spending other people’s 💰

The Queens clothes were all made in the UK..the Queen was aware high street can come from dubious employers…and should Katherine be seen in a high street outfit then found to come from a sweat shop employing children …etc ….it would be devastating..

My Grandfather bought the first television in their street especially for the Coronation and all the neighbours crowded in to watch. My Dad remembered it clearly all his life. They had a huge street party. He often talked about the end of rationing and how he was amazed the first time he went to the local shop and the grocer told him that he could buy as many sweeties as he liked. As a boy born the year War broke out, he had never known anything but rationing. He would often tell us, and it became a family joke, that he didn’t even see a banana until he was 5 ❤

I very clearly remember the Queen's coronation. I was probably in Grade One in Canada. The students all went outside as a tree was planted in honor of her. Each child also received a lovely mug with her image on it as well as a large "English penny". And every Christmas day we listened for her message, first on radio and later on television. I feel very badly about what she went through in her final years.

The Queen was frugal, doubtless as a habit from the years of austerity. My parents were the same - my father was saving water for Australia. I toured Britannia when it was dry docked in Edinburgh and my goodness, the furnishings! Very used , floral, and comfy but certainly not updated in years. The Queen and Prince Philip slept in rather narrow single beds which totally surprised me. I had a better bed! However, the public areas, like the formal dining room, were absolutely stunning and showcased the wealth of the Queen. Obviously, she used her money only for the public role. Very sensible, if you think about it. I imagine that Andrew and Harry (and their wives) did not get that memo!

    • @ErinAbou

I agree, it actually reminds me of my own late grandparents. They all lived through the Depression and WWII. All of the rationing and also, this generation believed in saving their money. You didn’t borrow on credit, you saved until you could afford to buy a new car or a new home for example. Add to that HM the late Queen’s and Prince Philip’s understanding that to whom much is given, much is expected. We need more of this today!

We all went to a cinema a Genève in Switzerland to see the whole coronation. It was a huge event in my life l will never forget. Also l never been in a movie cinema. We were very aware how huge and important all this was . Even that télévision existed where we live no body had such thing, that was luxury. 🇦🇺🦘🦘🦘🐨Thanks for sharing this intriguing book Shauna! Im currently listening to it on Audible…Amazing how little Markle really learned from all her royal research… if she wants to know how to create a historically venerated highly valuable brand all she had to do was look at her her husband’s grandmother & mother!! But NO she barely scrapped the surface of either woman’s amazing example! Her appropriation of commonwealth countries for the virginal veil, followed just months later with the trashing of the commonwealth calling it “Empire 2.0” just TYPICAL of the superficial copying then of literally pooing in her own backyard by trashing the beloved queen’s legacy… the stupidity, irony & hypocrisy of this woman’s overt public behaviours just beggars belief… one feels like one’s head is going to fall off one’s shoulders with all the constant spinning of innuendo, game playing & obvious lies!!! She’s a mental case… I hope someone (other than her) is looking after those poor little kids… 😳🤯🤦🏻‍♀️

I traveled across the Atlantic twice on the S.S. United States, when my father was transferred to Germany during the 1960s. Because of my father’s rank we traveled first class, so my Mother took me to Sax Fifth Avenue to improve my wardrobe for the formal dining room. For a thirteen year old whose closet consisted of uniforms, and Sunday church dresses this was a revolution. First of all nylons and pumps were shocking, compared to tennis shoes and loafers. The ensemble that made me feel completely grown up was my teal mohair dinner suit; it was stunning. Dinner every evening was spectacular with embossed menus of very grand selections like Tournedos, Duck à l'Orange, Crepe Suzettes, and Baked Alaska (deserts really caught our interest). There were concerts, movies, and teen dances in the evenings to keep us entertained. We spent our days exploring the ship, walking the deck, reading in the library, and most anxiously dolphin and whale watching. It was an experience of a lifetime!

2 coronation tidbits: the crown that the Queen was practising with at home (there were 2 -- or was it 3 -- crowns used during the coronation) got left behind by the entourage on the way to Westminster Abbey. The Queen departed from the Palace in her coach wearing a different crown -- as planned. When the Archbishop or someone noticed that the other crown wasn't in Westminster Abbey, there was utter consternation. Had it been stolen? they were relieved to finally deduce that the other crown must be sitting on the Queen's breakfast table -- probably unattended by now, in the nearly deserted Palace. Someone had to hightail it back to the Palace, scoop up the crown very unceremoniously and deliver it to the Abbey before the the procession arrived. Luckily it arrived in time.
About the Queen opening the Scottish parliament in day dress: she didn't make the same mistake with the other nations of the Commonwealth. The massively heavy coronation gown, plus tiara, went with her on her Commonwealth tour 1953-54, and she wore them to open the various national parliaments, attended by 2 of her Coronation "maids of honour" in their coronation gowns and tiaras too. (I dont think the crowns were allowed to leave the UK, which probably suited the Queen, as tiaras are much lighter.) But the gown was worn so many times! For example in Australia, she opened the national parliament in Canberra and also all the 6 state parliaments as well. The tour took place in the height of the Australian summer (Jan-Feb) complete with temperatures over 32 degrees Celcius; and often with no air-conditioning. The Queen is said to have found the heavy gown hot. I so admire how this monarch did not shortchange her subjects on that tour, despite how gruelling it was.

It was interesting to see the part about the Princess Royal and her comments about the drama of such occasions, having to be thoroughly prepared and never knowing where the TV infrastructure would end up. She said that it helped that both the King & her had performed in plays at school. It was very touching how he took her hand and kissed it ( like he had kissed his mother's hand I think maybe at the Platinum Jubilee) while tbey were waiting to go out onto the balcony. It was lovely to see them interacting as a loving family.

The next road to mine is called Lascelles Road, and I have always pronounced it the same as Shauna. It's the English grammatical rule of the double L. A single L would make it like Tassels. Just saying.

If the Windsor Greys had "cantered" along pulling the coronation coach as Kitty Kelly wrote, there would have been a very long Keystone Kops type of event for the hundreds of men trying to keep up behind. It would have been great fun to watch though.

I think the street party that we had for the late Queens Coronation is my first memory. I was born in 1950 so I must have only been two, but I described the dress I remembered wearing and she said I was right. It must be because it was such a big thing all the cakes etc and bunting and the big Union Jack flag painted on the wall…..which remained there until the houses were demolished 😂

He loved her, divorced, waited a while and the remarried quite quickly. If she truly loved him, she would have given up the lot. Lots of us have early romances that in hindsight are a poor match. Imagine if they had married and she kept all, how would he have coped with that circle, not working etc etc. It was doomed whichever way it could have gone.

I found the book a slog too, I only managed to finally finish it because I listened to it when you started reviewing it and I wanted to have a fresh knowledge of it. It’s not my favourite royal book if I’m honest. Have you ever come across the collected letters of The Queen Mother? Called ‘Counting Ones Blessings’ and edited and compiled by her official biographer William Shawcross. There are really quite insightful to the person who was Elizabeth Bowes Lyon . I’m reading them just now and they might make an interesting topic for a few videos, because you could reference historical events and have the actual thoughts of someone who was right in the middle of it all.

The Scotish people seem to go out of their way to be offended (when Queen Elizabeth was crowned monorch). Some of the Scotish people went out and distroyed some of the 'new E R ll post boxes', saying that Elizabeth was their first Queen Elizabeth not the second. So Winston Churchill, ruled that it would be the highest number of which was given priority (ie if another king was called James it would be king James Vll (because there has already been six Scotish kings called James).

Princess Margaret wasn't stupid, so why she insisted on marrying a man whom was divorced and with his x wife still living is beyond me. She certainly knew about her Uncle and Wallis and the turmoil his insistence to marry a divorced woman caused. Why would she put her sister, the Queen through all that turmoil on her own determination to wed Townsend? To do so was against the Church laws and his sister the Queen could never have allowed a member of the family to do such a thing. In my opinion, Margaret was very selfish when she was younger and expected her sister to do anything and everything to please her.....a spoilt brat indeed. Like someone else we know.
