- I finally made the griddle hinges for my model 1866 Blackstone griddle. I have been searching for a long time and could never find anything so I made my own. If you would like it to match better, then paint the hinges black. If you enjoyed this video, please share and like.

Thanks for the info. Did my install today. It took about 30 minutes. Great idea and works great. No problems with this fix.🤠👍
You have my vote to be a Blackstone Engineer! Why in the Sam Hill would they make a cover that doesn't hinge. Bad Design on their part! Thank the Good Lord we still have people that use their brains! Awesome modification to the lid sir! 5 Stars 🌟 🌟🌟🌟🌟
Thank you. You will like the modification.
I guessing to stop people from lowering the cover while cooking. The stove isn't designed for that, as I recall. Trapping too much heat? It's not a grill, nor smoker.
They make them with a cover. Just way more expensive.
What a genius idea. Cheap too. I just bought one yesterday, and definitely going to do it. Thanks.
Wife just bought a cover like that and wanted me to hinge it. As much as I enjoy fabricating little projects, I'll always jump all over a good idea. The fact that you even listed all necessary material, outstanding. Thank you sir.
Thank You I made 2 sets this week. Painted black and add a couple washers between the 2 pieces. They work great! Thanks for sharing this idea. I also added a long handle to the front it gave it a classy look and is functional.
Man this is one of the most thorough, well explained and useful videos I have watched. 100% am making this mod. I even picked up a trick to block the heat from torching my serving plates! Well done man, you earned a follow!
Glad I could help. You will like it. Use one of the heat shields to block the grease trap to keep the critters out when not in use.
Not that it matters, although they do help block the heat they were originally produced to help block the wind from blowing out you fire.
That was one of the biggest complaints with the older style Blackstones was that design made it like a wind tunnel and it was hard to keep the flame going on a windy day.
But yes they do work well for both reasons.
Awesome idea definitely gonna do this. Only thing I'm gonna change is I will take the handles off the top and put on the front of the lid!
Last year my millenial neighbor moved and left a 36" blackstone on the back patio,I call to remind him he said he did'nt want it because it was rusty...."SCORE".. easy wire wheel on the grinder job, after a couple seasoning runs,we had awesome tacos .This is an awesome mod.here from TBH.
Nice work, I'll be doing this tomorrow. Just got the grill and wasn't going to pay $100-150 more for a different lid. Was going to figure it out myself but then i checked youtube. Thank you! 👌👍
Nicely done. Thank you for being concise and sticking to the task!
This is genius. Thanks so much for posting this hack and saving us all our hard earned money. Your video and instructions are very clear and simple to follow.
Your video is awesome. Thank you so much for making this. I knew what I wanted but couldn't picture in my head how to make it.
I can't believe they don't actually come with these hinges as part of the grill itself.
You have now made my decision on which grill to buyso much easier. I appreciate your ingenuity
Glad I could help.
Outstanding! One thing I will add is a locking pin for when the lid is up and the wind blows. I was overthinking this task. Thanks!
Just did it to mine and works great. On my model (blackstone 4 burner) I just used the factory screws in the brackets for the side shelves. There was plenty of threads to do it. Further, at the hinge point there was a 3/16" gap between the two brackets on both sides so I just used 1" Screws, Washers (3 each side) to take up the space in-between the brackets and then a nylon insert nuts. Works great. Like other comments I opened it and closed it dozens of times, seemingly fascinated by this. And of course we're cooking with her tonight because welll...I'm excited to use it. Thanks for your video!!
Just got my blackstone today. So glad I found this video. I love to modify my bbq's. I'm going to modify even before I season thanks to you.
This is amazing. Really appreciate that you gave all the part numbers. I have the 1825 and may need to modify a little, however, with your guide that will be easy. Thanks.
Outstanding project I finished with high temp paint and may add lift handle but not really needed. Thanks again for great plans, directions and project
You just saved me from buying a $147 hinged lid! I cannot thank you enough. I also bought my 36" Blackstone from Tractor Supply. Thanks again. I will be watching you in the future.
Glad I could help!
Will this also work on the Members Mark brand (Sam's Club) 36" flat top griddle? Looks like it will....if it does, I will paint my hinges with high heat black paint. Thanks for video!
A++++!!!!! I Was Very Very Impressed How You Built This Using Your Own Instructions: THE BRAIN!! Thank You For Sharing! GOD BLESS!!!
Awesome solution. Thank you for sharing. I think I will add a piece of square tube welded between the ends of the bottom brackets left to right, and then make a through hole on the side of the hinge to put a pin into so a good breeze won't close my top.
Super good idea! Just got a 28' Blackstone and I was looking for hard cover options. Thank you
Going to do this today. This video is perfect, down to adding links/detailed directions for every part. Most folk would not do that. This will save me from spending $170 on the aftermarket lids some people out there are selling. Cheers!
You will like it so much better. Leave the extra metal hanging out the back for the lid to rest on, just round it over. Tighten/adjust the hinge screws/nuts so the lid will stay up in the wind. I hope the video was informative.
@@fixthemthings will do! I need to do a second trip to home depot. Looks like the 1/4 nuts for the hinge and my M6 bolts aren't matching up, the threading seems to differ. Granted I only went through home depot and not a mix of HD and Lowes
Very well thought out and saved us a chunk of time...Kudos to you
Thank you so much for this video! I followed your parts list and instructions and had no problem. I did round off the corners to keep from ripping my soft cover and I can already tell I'm gonna pull the hinges back off and spray them with black heat resistive paint.
I hope you like it. I do.
I hope you like it. I do.
Simple, easy and cheap! Great idea! Love it! Thanks for sharing!
You will like it.
Thank you for sharing. I couldn't bring myself to buy the more expensive Blackstone model just to get a hinged hood so I opted to buy my griddle at Tractor Supply. This is a perfect solution. Thanks again.
Great video!!! You solved my dilemma on which Blackstone to buy. I wanted 36” but I couldn’t find one with a hinged lid. I found an aftermarket hinged lid for $170, but that seemed high considering the Blackstone has a lid already. This video was great. Thank you.
Glad I could help. I searched and searched hinges. This was the best solution I could come up with. You will love it.
Love it. Adapt and overcome. Gr at video. Thank you for breaking it down Barney style
Great idea! I just got a 28" Blackstone first thing I noticed was the drain pan is in the way if you wanna hang the cover from the hooks.
Im gonna do this to mine thanks!
You hang the lid on the hooks and it rests against the grease pan.
Thank you ! I did this onthe 28" blackstone and worked perfectly!!
I really like the hack that you did. I ordered the parts for the "hinges" as well as ordered ceramic insulation for the cover with stainless tape to cover the seams and super high temp adhesive to hold the insulation to the top. I may do a video on how to to the mod.
Followed your instructions, worked out very well and all so added a handle to the front of the cover.
Just did mine, Ty for the tips. Moved one of the handles from the top to the front edge
You will love it.
That's a smart idea for lifting the lid!
This will work for me. Thank you! I know this is a budget model but damn couldn’t Blackstone just make it hinged geez.
Just did mine following your directions came out awesome. Great idea👍
You will love it. Glad it worked out for you. Snug up the hinge lock nuts enough to keep it from moving on its own.
Thank you for a wonderful idea. I installed the hinges as you described and they work perfectly.
Great job. Thank you very much for taking the time to post this much needed fix.
Very smart!! Thanks for sharing your wisdom with us 😇!
Now all you have to do is paint it black!! Great job!
Just places a order with no local Lowe's TY for taking the time to put this video together
Had to modify with spacers because lid is wider, works perfect and beats buying new cover.
Thanks
You sir are a freaking life saver!!!
Glad to help!
This is exactly what I was looking for thank you for your time and effort
Brilliant!! And love the clarity of your instructions
Great video, thank you for taking the time to make it.
Great video. Just purchased a 36" Blackstone and was looking for a relatively simple way to hinge the hood I purchased.
I knocked over my grease tray and kept scratching my head. Thank you for this video! Do you ever like seeing people who replicate what you do?
You will like it so much better. Keep the part that sticks out for the cover to rest on.
@@fixthemthingsdid you sawzall the 2nd L brackets so it slides back and forth not hitting anything? I see the saw out.
Yes. Cut part of the bracket that attaches to the cover near the pivot point.
Thank you for posting this video. I'll have the same fix for my griddle.
I’ve been thinking about how to put hinges on mine as well. You just made it way easier. Note: I think I’ll paint the pieces black to match the grill as well. Great job!!
Really nice work, simple, to the point, awesome!
I have been really looking for a way to make my current lid (like yours) hinge.. I LOVE the design and what you are doing.. Going to get the parts to do this to mine this weekend! Cant thank you enough!!
You will like it. Leave the pieces hanging out the back for the lid to rest on.
This is exactly what I was looking for.
You will like it!
Glad I found this video! Just bought this griddle and was wondering how I could make this happen. Thanks soooo much!
You will like it! Leave the back part sticking out for the cover to rest on. Tighten the hinge bolts enough to create friction. It makes cooking so much better.
@@fixthemthings Could you use another bolt and nut as a stop for the bracket to rest against when open? Then cut the excess off the back, and eliminate the spot damage that would happen to the lid resting on that portion of bracket?
Then paint it all black to match. I'm thinking that excess bracket sticking out could be an issue for some people...
But I do like this idea..it's best one I've seen so far and close to what I was thinking about doing myself...I wasn't enthusiastic about buying a whole new lid with the hinge setup.
@@showcasecharlie11 the bracket sticking out hasn’t been a problem for me. My griddle backs up to a railing. Also the bracket does not harm the cover at all since I rounded it. You could always put a plastic sleeve on the extension to protect from metal to metal contact. I wish I could post a picture here but I just checked mine for rubbing the paint off. Mine is still good.
@@fixthemthings Awesome 👍...I was just wondering is all...you definitely helped me decide on what to do. You done well.
Just made this, thank you gor the great tutorial and idea! Works like a charm. I added a couple og washers to the front brakets to even out the side shelves, and two between the top and bottom parts of the hinge yo space them out a bit (top is a bit wider than the body of the griddle). Now i just have to take them off to paint so they don't stick out!😂
Great job worked good on my old model 1554 0:58
this work great . but no gringer so i placed tennis balls that i put a slice into for the end of "L BRACKET so i can put on my cover with out tearing or making a worn spot.....even a girl can do this ...THANKS for a great video.
Very clever and well done. I'm trying to figure out a hinge "hack" myself, for my Weber 28" griddle.
Nice job boss. Simple and effective
This worked great. Thank you for the hard work.
You need 6 1/4-20 X1/2. 4 for the cover and 2 for the hinge point
Great video brother…….I like the idea I’ll probably do the same on my blackstone.
Thanks for sharing 🤠
You will like it. Makes cooking setup a little easier.
This is GREAT !!! I have told several people about it. Thanks.
Man that’s impressive. Good project
Thanks. I’m really liking it. It was cheap and easy. I searched for a long time for a hinge and couldn’t find anything. Solved.
When the cover is closed instead of having that piece of L bracket sticking out that can rip the cover. I think I’m gonna cut it off then use a piece of very small chain to act as limiting straps so the cover doesn’t go too far back.
@@benjaminbailey7429 I actually like the piece sticking out after using it a few times. It does not damage the cover at all since it is rounded over. I like that the hinge bolts are tight enough to keep the cover at different positions without falling. I always just leave it resting on the extended piece though.
Got my griddle cover completed today. In between the 2 L brackets that hinge I used a 1/4” nylon washer in between. Also went down the kitchen cabinet aisle and got a stainless handle about 8” long for front to open and close easier. Thanks again for the video
@@benjaminbailey7429 awesome. Good deal.
Looks awesome--great job
Thanks. It works great. Made grilling much better.
Sweet!!! Start selling em!! Good job cuz... going to Lowe's tomorrow 😂
Take that shit to shark tank!!!!
Excellent! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you sir! exactly what I was looking for
Glad I could help. You will like it!
Great video. Looks like I know what I'm doing this weekend. I think I'll put some high heat black paint on the parts.
Good job man! Thanks - scratching my head why they would not just put a hinge on them to start with or make one that woud work with that hole
Thanks so much...works great!!
Thanks. Just did this today came out nice.
Good deal.
You are a legend. Thank you sir
Glad to help.
Ingenious
I can vouch that it works great!
This is a fantastic video. Thank you for sharing. Have you thought about putting a handle on the front lip of the cover to make lifting a little easier?
Thanks. I was gonna put a handle on it but I just grab both corners and lift. I don’t see a need for a handle now. It has really made my grilling experience so much better doing this.
Great idea and great job! Thanks!!
Damn, this is awesome. Thanks my man! Why does it seem like us 28” griddle owners get screwed with accessories?
I ordered a lid from Amazon for less then $50. I don’t feel short changed. The 28” gives you plenty of space. Enjoy.
Really good detail on the steps, parts, etc., without getting too drawn out. Thanks for making this video!
I also want to use the hard-cover as a heat-retention lid (for use during cooking) but the cover explicitly states it shouldn't be used like that. Do you think it's just because those "feet" make contact with the cooking surface when the lid is down? I'm considering doing your hinge modification, and then putting in a different foot/support, maybe in the corners near the front of the unit, and removing the existing "feet". Thoughts?
Ah... I just read your reply to a different comment about using the lid during cooking and how the paint is possibly not heat-resistant.
@@pauladams9313 yes. The paint will definitely flake off. You don’t want to eat that. I would use the choppers from dollar store to retain heat and keep from burning plates on the shelves. Also, put one of the choppers over the grease catch when storing to keep the mice out.
Fantastic!!!!
great idea
Your awesome! Thank you just what I wanted to do
Glad I could help!
CanI pay you to make those for me and ship them?
Genius
Now you need to install a new handle on the front
Nice video--I have the same griddle---Just curios --Why do you have to raise the back up a little before you drill the pivot holes?--Does the cover hit the back if you don't?
You don’t have to do that. I just wanted to make sure it was off a little bit to eliminate heat transfer and so the paint wouldn’t come off.
Dumb question...can you close this when cooking now with this setup?
I wouldn’t. The don’t think the paint is made for the heat. It will flake off into your food.
You should never close a lid while the unit is on. It is NOT designed for the heat. Use a dome to cover and steam your food instead.
A basting cover or large pot lid works if you are trying to melt cheese or steam something. I wouldn't use the lid unless you stripped all the finish off and even then, its pretty thin and not reinforced so I would guess warping and buckling would occur.
can someone help me? I can't figure out pivot point the pivot point moves when i test open and close lid
Not exactly sure what you are describing. Moves how? Did you use lock nuts on the pivot point and tighten them enough to create drag so the lid won’t fall down?
@fixthemthings I haven't drilled into the lid yet because when I tried and mocked up, hinge on lid the pivot hole on lid hinge moves when I move hood up and down
Great plan. Have you considered a cotterless hitch pin to hold the top up so you can cut the back of the bottom bracket off (minute 5:50)
I actually like it like it is. Less things to keep up with. It rests nicely on the piece sticking out. Tighten up the lock nuts enough to keep the cover in the upright position. You will like it.
@@fixthemthings Has it cut your cover?
@@svereb1 no. It’s all good.
Did the shelves still fold down, did you have to shim the front brackets?
Everything works like normal. That’s why I made it this way. Hope you like it.
Can you tell us where you got the 2 looks like stainless handles, you're using for wind guards from and maybe the item numbers. Went to two-dollar stones nothing said never seem any. BTW great video.
Dollar Tree has them.
www.dollartree.com/cooking-concepts-stainless-steel-chopper-scrapers/226405
You should make these as a side business and sell them…. Also what were the things called for the side of the grill from the dollar store
Hope you liked the video. Here is a link to Dollar tree.
www.dollartree.com/cooking-concepts-stainless-steel-chopper-scrapers/226405
Thank you so much for this video. I bought all the parts exactly as you laid them out. Question, does the lock nut become a problem with the heat? ie melting the plastic?
Nope. No problem. This is why I designed it this way. It is not attached to the cast iron. There may be heat that comes out the side but not hot enough to melt it. I haven’t had an issue. You will like it.
Thank you. Last question, any issues with the zinc plated 6” corner brackets rusting? I will have mine covered just like yours, but if I am using all SS screws, should I consider stainless steel brackets? I just hate drilling SS, it always dulls my bits. I would rather go with the zinc plate like you show.ed. Thanks again.
@@shahramhomami no problem with the zinc. I had a hard time finding some of those parts. That’s why some are from Home Depot and some from Lowes. Supply chain issues I guess. I didn’t see any SS brackets. I thought this setup would be the easiest reliable way to do it. Hope you like it.
Hi temp black paint would be a nice finishing touch.
The with bottom L-braces installed measurement 36 1/4, the griddles top is a lot wider measure 36 9/16. did you have to bend the L-braces to make it fit the top or top fit the bottom.
I did not have to bend them.
Nice
Looks great! Will your shelves still fold down after doing this?
They should. You know, I haven’t tried that. I will check if I remember.
Yes. I remember now. That’s why I designed it like that. Side will fold down. It also doesn’t touch the heated metal.
@@fixthemthings thanks! This is ingenious! Got my parts and doing this weekend.
Did you end up doing this to both sides or just one side?
Must do it to both sides.
Do you realize the same exact grill with a hinged lid is over $200 more.
So my top is about 1/2” to wide for this to work without bending brackets out. Can i just throw a couple washers on each hinge screw?
1/2” wider than the frame or the griddle pan? Should be the same as mine. The brackets may bend a little with no problem.
So i actually ended up putting 6 washers on each side my lid had alot of space. But it still works great
HELP....I could not get the lock nuts to work over the pivot screw/bolt....I had no problems with the 4 in the cover. Do you have any suggestions please or should I switch to longer ones like the Home Depot Everbilt ones?
When I was buying screws for this project there were supply chain issues so I had to buy from different stores. I’m not sure what your problem is but definitely use the nylok nuts. It will make the lid stay in position.
