3 things I hate about my griddle! And how we fixed them!

- We love our griddles. We really do but there are a few design details that really irk me (Nate). In no particular order they are:
1. Undersized grease trap systems
2. The front v Channel that always seems to be full of hot oil
3. No place to scrape the burned food residue off your griddle scraper.
@campchef was kind enough to send us 2 new griddles. We grabbed one and went to work redesigning it to our liking. I have to say. The final product is AWESOME! It's exactly what I wanted and works amazing. The small details make a big difference, for example being able to empty the grease bin when the griddle is hot...? Oh yeah, we can do that now! A grease trap that is large enough to get your scraper into? Check! :-)
Hope you enjoy the video! Cook on GRIDDLE NATION!
A big THANK YOU to Camp Chef! Hope you enjoy the video!

Garage, griddle, grinders and welders! Sounds like a perfect Saturday...with beer, of course.
Amen to that brother.. Griddle on-J
For the price of two grills, camp chef just got a free R&D department.
Stupid of him. Doesn’t know his own worth.
@@darrellgrant7615 It's not stupid. It is volunteering to show average people and the company how to overcome a problem.
A new company may adopt the innovative improvements. The old ones will not, because they don't want to pay for packaging changes
Sometimes there are stupid corporate decisions made, over the simple things.
well did yall know that you can get all your griddles/grills customized,?well atleast from blackstone..all you gotta do is contact them.
At least those companies now know what not to do.
We've used this griddler for a variety of items including steak, fish, vegetables ruclips.net/user/postUgkxMcXT6_MuT0hB3ejyGQQHaeof9bwoWPUf and mushrooms and it's been great! Gets that great smokey flavor when using high heat or sear. The grill works amazingly simple and very low smoke for what it is. Heat gets up fairly quick, especially on closed position. The griddler side is fairly simple, better for eggs and pancakes rather than any cooking. Use the flat plates with the grill side if needed.Cleanup is easy and having heat on both sides is great for cooking a large amount or panini press. This definitely gets hot though so be careful with the sides.
I thought twice about getting into 28 minutes of what could have been brand propaganda, but this team did not disappoint! Great content. I feel like a winner just for diving in! More please.
Ty Bigtime. Glad you stayed with us. Cheers-J
I like the modifications! Very creative and well thought out. You guys are super talented! Looking forward to seeing you cook on it in the future! 🌞💨
You Guy's seriously need to market your own line of Grills, when you do, sign me up!!! Awesome job
Thanks for the kind words Marque! And for supporting the channel! Cook on friend! -N
No seriously, I want one. Sell these.
Awesome job!! I really enjoyed watching. Super job Jeff! Props to Camp Chef for donating a griddle!
Agreed! Camp chef was great! Jeff's swinging door design was great! He hooked me up big time :-) -N
Outstanding guys. I love it. Making it your own is what it's all about. I feel your pain Nate, when the slag gets stuck on your scrapper. Nice job. GRIDDLE ON DUDES.
Hi Bruno! Agreed, the liquid grease,,,, u can get into the trap but any of the solids that bond to your scraper require you to scoop them up off the griddle and scrape using some other tool into the trash,,, kind of a pain but.. Not anymore lol (well for me anyway.. Jeff and chris still need to mod theirs). Cook on bud! -N
Being a guy who has a machine shop and can't leave much alone, I fully support that you have modified your grill to your standards. I own a 36'' Blackstone with a rear grease trap and "For Me", I wouldn't have it any other way. Too each his own. Great job guys!
I agree, I have never had any problem cleaning the Blackstone as it is
Definitely would purchase a griddle from you guys 👏 great job!!!
Thank you guys. Now I have a new project. Hated my grease trap and grease everywhere. Very clean job! Camp Chief should make these modifications. Great sense of humor as well. Really enjoyed the video.
Thanks for the kind words Danny! Good luck with your own mod! Cook on bud! -N
Love it. I have a fab shop at my disposal and I am in the middle of an ugly drum smoker project. I never even thought of modifying my griddle. Cannot wait to try to explain this to my wife. Thanks for the great idea and input.
All 3 of us are fixated with your comment and jealous at the same time... "I have a fab shop at my disposal.." Cook on friend! -N
Love the grease catcher. Mine is on the back and I hate having to fit all that mess through that opening. I'll definitely be making modifications to my blackstone.
Good video and great ideas. I have the Blackstone 36" with the rear grease catch. I'd like to see the slot widened as well. If the slot were wider the scraper would also fit through to scrape the "smeg" into the catch pan. I also like the idea of using "off the shelf" tin pans. NOT the proprietary size Blackstone uses and sells. Thanks for the ideas.
Awesome mod and video guys! Wow! Works great and really needed design!
I'm now going to do the same thing to my camp cheff.I always fold up a couple of paper towels to put in the bottom of the catch pan to prevent splatter. Great video!!!
I love the modifications, and look forward to seeing what other ideas Jeff has for his griddle mods.👍😊
Bobbi! :D Always great to hear from you! Jeff's griddle mods will be coming up. He has a different plan and,, I like it! Cook on friend! -N
I was going to do the same kind of mods. I have always loved Camp Chef over the others. The bottom of the griddle was the seller for me. Grease traps were my pet peeve as well. I hope that Camp Chef takes you "free" engineering and puts it to good use in their mfg. Love you guys always. Great job.
Thanks so much for the kind words and for watching! We agree! Camp Chef makes good stuff and overall we are impressed with the build quality of the griddle,,, it was just that dang silly design for the grease... :-) It would be nice to see all the manufacturers start using designs that are more commercial and less of an after thought. Cook on friend! -N
@@TheGriddleGuys Thanks guys. I noticed the absence of the adult beverages in the shop area. Best practice LOL. Now, did you see the new and improved blackstone at Walmart? It has air fryers and warming tray. I was totally sold on Camp Chef and now this... OMG when will it stop. Can't wait to see you guys using the air fryer version. I know on of you guys will get one, its a given. Cheers.
That swivel door…genius! Good one guys. Can’t wait to see your next cook on this griddle.
Jeff really surprised and impressed me with the swivel door and,,, it functions really really well. I have been using the griddle and the fact that I can take out the grease trap while the griddle is still hot is more useful than I imagined. I take i out and store it on the shelf under the cook surface then fold down the side shelves and it helps everything stay clean. Loving it ! Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment Scott! Cook on friend! -N
Great job guys, going to start cutting into my 36" BStone with the front grease trough this weekend. Thanks a million for the idea and a great video !!!
Sorry I missed this Rod. Ty for commenting and more importantly how did it go?
I love the job you guys did. For me, I prefer the rear trap on the blackstone. I don't want to see the grease trap all the time. I prefer it hidden behind while I cook.
Yes but with an "off the record" behind the griddle grease pan camera to discretely monitor the level. lol
I have a hard cover on mine that lifts and folds / hangs off rear of it, it also blocks some windy conditions from cooling the grill to much, so I like the side discharge idea much better
Idea for you, Make a stainless steel awning over the control knobs. The splatter will wipe right off and keep the knobs clean. Great video.
You nailed it . Crazy but I was actually thinking of something like that. Good call
Great job guy's! I found out that the shelves are basically useless because they get really hot so kudos for using them for something other than a hot plate. My friend said you put the trap on the wrong side. I argued because I scrape from my right to my left. He wants a left handed model 🤣
0utstanding ! ! ! Now , THAT's Yankey ingenuity ! Great ideas, great application, great results. Can't wait to see this guy in full on stress operation. I am subscribed, hit and shared. Thank you for this.
I am completely happy with my Char-Griller Premium. It's my first griddle, and I can't think of anything that would improve it. I actually like the grease trap at the front, and the size of the hole is perfect. I appreciate all that you guys do, very entertaining and informative. You guys have a great flow with your videos.
I love my chargriller, except the grease pan is a little small. Otherwise I find it superior to blackstone in many ways.
I also have the Char Griller Flat Iron Premium. Completely agree, Grease trap is perfect, hole is perfect size, Integrated hinged lid, magnetic tool holder, paper towel holder, front utility tray for oil/water bottles and anything else. Its far superior to anything else I have seen.
Nice frankengriddlle guys! I would buy one with that design tomorrow if I didn't have 2 Blackstones already. You need Camp Chef to release it as a Griddle Guys edition. It would probably be easier to build into an outdoor kitchen that way over the Blackstone design too.
What up Ben!!! Always great to hear from you! So I sent the link to the video to the CC sales rep. I am curious to hear what his feedback is,,, will they like it, or hate it.... :-D Thanks for watching man! Cook on! -N
@@TheGriddleGuys I would definitely buy one I own a Members Mark grease trap center front small hole, it does alright.
Any word on the Griddle Guys edition from Camp Chef? It looks like a huge improvement over the standard version. I run a camp chef griddle top on a portable 3 burner stove top and found this video while looking for ways to improve the grease catch on that guy.
Great job guys.. you gave me an inspiration to make a couple modifications to my Blackstone.. keep up the great work
Watching them work, I could not help but think “ I bet these guys are the Safty guys for there jobs” lol y’all are great keep it up.
Man that’s some awesome engineering. I bet one of those companies uses these great mods on an upcoming model. Looks like the grinder and welder might be coming out to play this week. My BS grease system sucks. Keep on doing what you do. BTW Jeff nice looking welds!!
whats up Dave? Thanks for the kind words, we told our camp chef rep they are welcome to borrow the idea lol. One detail not in the video that I love is the fact that when I am done cooking and cleaning, while the griddle is hot, I can take the full grease cup out and place it under the griddle, on the shelf, then put the shelf in the down position. No rain gets in the grease trap cuz it is covered by the griddle when sitting on the shelf and the shelves stay cleaner when they are in the down position. Super happy with how this project came out. Always good to hear from you buddy! -N
I'll admit I was very skeptical watching cutting into and welding on a brand new shiny griddle but now I need a camp chef griddle and that modification.... nice job!
Chris definitely agrees with you! He must have asked me 10 times if I was sure I wanted to do this :) Thanks for taking the time to comment Phil. Cook on bud! -N
36” blackstone with rear grease trap.
Love the thought full engineering guys!! Cheers! Y’all are like brothers.
Thanks for giving the link to your channel, Just subbed it! Cook on bud! -N
Finally somebody addresses the grease issue! Thanks guys. I keep a empty gallon size ice tea bottle with large mouth and a large funnel next to my griddle to put the grease from the tiny grease trap on my Expert griddle.👍🏻
It's bothered us all will. Campchef has been great to us. Awesome company so I wouldn't doubt they would look into it..
"Safety First" he says while he cuts the steel without gloves (lol). As a shipbuilder I can tell you without question that is the surest way to get new scars on your hands and fingers. But, I digress. On with the show :)
Yea and no guard on grinder lol
That is how I wish my Blackstone was (I have the original 28" model)! Great job on the mods. You might be able to find a stainless steel loaf pan that the disposable loaf pan liners will fit in for even more sturdiness when removing the pan filled with grease and "smeg".
A few others recommended the loaf pan. It's a good suggestion. I will grab one soon. Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment! -N
I held on subscribing, till I heard ,and saw the fat hit the pan, WOW it WORKS You Men SHINE!
What a group of professionals. You guys are awesome!
Thanks so much! All kidding aside this was a heck of alot of fun! -N
Great job as allways I like to take a 220 flap wheel and a 4 inch angle grinder and polish the top to a mirror easy to season and clean.
Ty Andrew and good call. Makes quick work of what would be a long painful process if done by hand. Griddle on-J
I would seriously pay for y’all to modify a new Camp Chef griddle or buy one from y’all that you have modified. Love what y’all have done. Y’all need to consider this a side job!
Seriously?? It baffles me that the idiots that make these griddle have so much resources, yet aren't able to build this must have feature.
While all this is nice it would add a bunch of labor to the cost of each one.
They need to send prototypes to ppl like this to help with real world problems and get the kinks worked out before they manufacture them
@@AdiGV What "must have feature" would that be? A massive front lip that impedes access to the griddle and makes cleaning more difficult?
Really like your mods. Good to know these problem areas as I'm have been considering my 1st griddle lately
Awesome fabrication work!!!! Y’all got mad skills!!!😮
Suggestion: Sometimes you want a tilt and sometimes you don't (thin sauces, eggs, etc.). Add a cam to the front and back of the side opposite the grease pan. A piece of solid rod drilled off center would make a cam which would mount on steel tabs and be activated with a 90 degree bent rod handle. When the cam is disengaged the griddle top would be level and engaging the cam would tilt it even when the griddle is hot. Probably some wood prototyping would be required to get the right configuration. Again, great work.
I was first going to reply that CC has built in levelers on the underside of the griddle but your design makes more sense. AFter all, you can't pick up the griddle and adjust them when it is blazing hot but with your design, it wouldn't matter. YOu could actually adjust the pitch on the fly.. I like it. Will suggest it to Jeff for his mods. Thanks for the idea and for taking the time to share it Les! Cook on bud! -N
Brilliant idea 👍
@@TheGriddleGuys And they seize up from the rust also should be made of ss!
Can you show me in a diagram the cam idea Les..
I think a "removable" cam is better. No hot when in use, and put away when not in use. It seems to ve similar to the reclining chair
I have this griddle and I love the solution to the sticky sludge. One thing that concerns me is this griddle puts out a lot of heat through the sides of the griddle top. I wouod weld in a metal piece to block the vent holes along the grease catcher to try and keep that heat away to not start a fire
Agreed. A ton of heat rolls up around the sides. Didn't think of blocking the vents. Maybe we will do that down the road. Cook on Kraken! -N
what an awesome change of pace. Love what you guys are doing! cheers
Cheers Dano!! Ty-J
Last weekend I volunteered to work the griddle to cook pancakes and scrambled eggs for approx 150 persons retreat. Your griddle enhancements are spot on!
WOW! 150 people. How many Griddles were they using? Thanks for subbing AL! Welcome to the Griddle Guy family! - C
Never had any issue getting grease or “smeg” through blackstone rear grease trap.
That's great! The wide ramp we put in works very well with a much bigger tin to hold more! - C
I know one of the major attractions to the foil pans is that they are disposable… But if you don’t mind cleaning a pan, you can get a restaurant pan for chafing dishes in about the same size that is a lot more heavy duty. The first time that flimsy foil pan self-destructs and drops onto your deck, there will be many bad words spoken.
"....many bad words spoken..."
I started welding and doing plumbing work when I was 15 and I am now retired and living in an apartment, you guys have me 'jonesing' for some shop time. Great 👍 video 📹 👏
Ty Aiercooled Engine. Always appreciated-J
Been designing my own for the exact reasons you stated. Great work.
I think when Chris left he went to hide the other grill so it would not be rebuilt 🤣👍
😁 Either that or to take a nap.. -J
Outstanding mod Griddle Guys. The modified grease system looks great, especially with a built-in way to scrape the charred crust off of your spatula or scraper. Good job....
Ty Corwin. Nate been using it for a bit now and loves it. Now we have to do the others . Thanks again-J
Great improvement, guys. Gotta luvit!
Good job guys. Love all of the modifications.
Thanks J Mert! Cook on bud! -N
Great Job, as always, Y'all! Some very innovative engineerin, an flawless fabrication!
Stay safe an well!
Thanks, you too! -N
Those were some awesome upgrades. Genius fellas. Got me doing some thinking now
😁👍 ty Twig B . Think and griddle on.
I hope Camp Chef does this. Can’t wait.
Captivating video and loved to see the improvements come to life now it's time to bring it to market.
Would be nice if all the big players got involved. I definitely would see the value in it for them
Love the modification y'all have done. Now let cook on it. Much love from North Carolina.
Hi Patricia! Pretty much all my future cooks will be on this unit. You should see plenty of videos using it! Thanks for watching! -N
I like the modifications you made to your griddle. I’m going to change the grease trap on my Blackstone soon.
Awesome upgrade! Thanks for sharing! Dave in WV!
Ty Dave. Always appreciated-J
Brilliant - nice work guys!
Beautiful, excellent modification….great job…
Really cool modifications guys, great job and great video!
Thanks Schnell! Always great to hear from you! Keep cooking buddy! -N
Side grease trap makes the most sense. Plus making it big enough for the scraper to fit thru, genius
Great job! Perfect improvement.
I like the updates to the grill great Job guys!
Ty for the ongoing support Chris. Always appreciated-J
Great job guys! Welding is sewing with metal. My griddle is a Char Griller and the grease trap opening is in the left front corner and works great and the trap in under the unit. I also agree with the sugar type schmegma and being able to scrap it off. Very fussy stuff. End result was good. I'm sure the engineers at Camp Chef are taking note.
Thanks Matt. Cheers-J
The level of efficiency is high with these modifications. Well done gents
Ty Danny. Did we mention it took 2 days and 20 refills of our yetis? 😁
Love the ingenuity boys.... gotta make it personal.... Pro-Style grill.
Ty Johnny. Sorry I missed this. Cheers-J
Love the upgrade!!!!
Best upgrades I've seen. Been thinking of doing the same thing but don't have a welder
Great improvements, totally make sense.
Great modifications Griddle Guys!!
Ty trapp86d. 👍
Awesome video guys!!!..love the ideas and got me looking to see what I can do with my griddle... thanks again 😎👍🏻
Awesome! Thank you and it was our pleasure! - C
Putting one on my Christmas wishlist!!
Wow! Great vid and execution. I have the exact same Camp Chef and have been wanting to do something to alleviate these very problems. Am so copying your ideas. Going to have to do a deep dive of your other vids now to see what I've been missing.
Awesome, thank you! And welcome to the Griddle Guy family! Griddle on friend! - C
Love the modifications! Great video guys!
Ty Pete 👍
As a newb to griddling I watch all you guys vids. This one was freakin awesome. Great work. 👍 im still doing my deep dive into this rabbit hole trying to decide what brand to start with. Ive tried a griddle top for my old double burner Camp Chef stove that was used for many scout troop trips. Way too much air underneath and not enough heat for smash burgers etc. Anyway keep it up dudes. Griddle Guys 👍👍👍
You NOW have the PERFECT griddle!! Congrats guys on the Grease Catch 6000 (tm).. lol
I have a few issues with my Nexgrill. You guys just gave me the inspiration to fix my gripes! Subscribed!
Awesome and welcome. -Tgg
you guys did a great job nice finding a site that's not 6 years old hello from Las Vegas
Welcome from the Northeast. And ty for commenting-J
LOVE the new Grease Trap 6000 concept!!! 👍👍
Ty Tom 👍
Really nice modification. I have a blackstone 36” model and the thing that drives me crazy is actually where the grease catch is. Maybe I’ll modify that this weekend. Thanks for the video guys
Thank you Ryan. Good luck. 👍 Little mods can make such a huge difference with enjoyment. Nates been loving it. Thanks again-J
All I can say is Niiiiice! Just bought my first Blackstone for camping. Mods will be considered.
If you have the means it's definitely worth considering. Nates been using this modified griddle for over a month now and raves about it. Hold tight tho, I've been working on some other mods as well. Video should be out before Christmas
May Blackstone and Camp Chef take notice and send you guys a big CHECK - FANTASTIC and yes I know what you about the grease traps I have three Blackstones griddles two at our house and one for the RV .
Big check would def be nice! LOL,,, 3 griddles! NIce! Wish we were eating with you! Cook on bud! -N
Freaking awesome. I just (last week) welded up a griddle for my old BBQ to save space/$. Haven't even used it yet. I may need to rethink my plans. Subscribed.
Love it Bret. The fun of having a welder. Welcome to TGG and ty for sub'ing and commenting-J
Great ideal fellas!! Thank you!
WOW!! That is a great job and a very smart one too.
Thansk for watching and for taking the time to comment! -N
Nice gob guy’s perfect modifications
Outstanding idea and work, guys!!
Ty Rick 👍
Great idea and loved how it turned out. Great job
Thank you! Cheers! - C
I love the updates on it
Really good rebuilding guys
Very well thought out, not to mention the welds are top notch!
Careful! Talk like that will go right to Jeff's head lol! -N
GREAT IDEA ...GREAT JOB PLUS A FUN TIME !!!
Ty Mark. We have another mod video coming out soon. Stay tuned
Nice work. Id have never thought of hacking up my griddle. But that trap is brilliant!! I hate that narrow trap on my Blackstone for the same reason...it's too narrow and end up scraping the crud over the drain hole and end up with a mess drooling over the back.
Now we'll see them all come out with these changes while you's get jack crap..lol.
I agree make your own griddles and sell them. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for taking the time to comment Rich! Cook on bud! -N
Fantastic video guys. I'm a welder/fabricator and I love it. I might even move my grease trap on my Blackstone from the back to the side, that's a great idea. Have a great weekend guys👍👍
Well now that we know your a fabricator,,, Why didn't we just have you do this for us!!!!!! LOL! :D If you have the rear grease trap already, what are your thoughts on just cutting the back wall wide enough to get your scraper through, then putting a small ramp to drain the grease into the trap where it is? Fabbing a ramp that aligns with the V depression in the cook surface could be tricky but might be worth it?
Anyhow as usual, great to hear from you ! Cook on bud! -N
@@TheGriddleGuys hey Nate! Ive got a couple videos out now of me starting on a new smoker. I would've loved to come to New England and helped on yours. I thought about modifying the rear one but sometimes I forget about the rear one (outta sight outta mind) until it overflows onto my patio. I like the side idea because I would see it all the time. I do hate the idea of closing up the rear one though. I'll figure something out, video it and credit you guys with the idea. Have a great weekend guys.
@@TheGriddleGuys I have the 36" rear drain Blackstone. I absolutely hate its design. I will likely fill in the hole, move to the side with a similar cutout to yours but have a drain into a removable bucket like my smoker.
Great work @ R&D
Time to start manufacturing! I will buy one!!!!
Awesome. What a great improvement
Ty Les. Nates been loving it ever since
Fantastic job! Thanks for doing these videos.
Glad you like them! -N
