Without sea world and zoos many endangered species would already be extinct. They are a necessary evil, in order to save animals from extinction. Much like how we humans need prisons in order to keep Molotov cocktail throwing hooligans off of our city streets and behind bars where they belong.

@timothyomara6303 zoos are sometimes necessary (with decent sized, enriching enclosures for members of threatened species), but “Seaworld” is utterly despicable.
There is no excuse for that. Marine animals like orcas belong in the vast ocean, not in TINY tanks where they can hardly move, to be milked for profit year after year. Absolutely disgusting!

@@melviasheppard8466 But the problem is that Lolita is now dead, so why would anyone care? Also she was going to be released soon, so that makes it harder to press any charges of animal cruelty and abuse, especially when they tried to save her life and plans were already in the works to move her to a coastal sanctuary. I would like to see charges brought against Miami Seaquarium for imprisoning her for so long in that human equivalent of a bathtub, and ignoring calls for decades to release her to a sanctuary until it was too late, but sadly not much would come out of this as the captive breeding of orcas has already stopped.

There is an elementary school who had been doing fundraisers and trying to bring awareness to this situation as a community service project. There was speculation the Orca was getting sicker and older and needed to be put back with her family and clearly they waited too long. This is heartbreaking, those children will be devastated to learn she died alone in her tiny tank. That poor animal spent her entire life alone and isolated and forced to perform. Remember that when you guys take your kids to amusement parks where performing animals are.

Had no idea about the issue until years later. I was 16 at the time. People keep birds in cages . People keeping animals in cages before you eat them. While there is plenty of guilt to go around, most of it goes to people that profit from it while fully being aware of all the issues.

THERE NEEDS TO BE AN INDEPENDENT INVESTIGATION OF THIS WHALE'S DEATH. I wouldn't be surprised if the Aquarium "planned" or at least hoped for it. She was a total liability to them now that she could no longer perform. They didn't even respect her enough to keep her tank clean - you wouldn't let a guppy live there, let alone this magnificent creature if you cared about and RESPECTED her. Reports are that they were giving her rotten food. How long can an animal live like this? Who does that to an animal and doesn't face abuse charges???? And now they were going to have to bear the huge expense of returning her to Puget Sound. I don't think they wanted to put one more dime into her. Her care alone must amount to animal abuse and the Aquarium should be held accountable.

I don't really agree with returning these killer whales to the wild. She's very people oriented at this point. Just like Keiko..He was set free but stayed around people because that's what he was used to. He did not survive very long in the wild. What are the chances this whale would have found her pod? Keiko didn't find his. He didn't associate with other killer whales. He was so used to people. It sounds great to set her free but in reality would it really work? She should not have been captured in the first place but the way of thinking was different back in the day. Zoos don't do that anymore but years ago, they did. Animals are bred in zoos and sent to other zoos usually for breeding or maybe companionship for another of the same species. I was a zookeeper for 40 years so I know. The only way wild animals make it to a zoo is if they were injured in the wild and can no longer survive on their own.

Keiko survived 5 years in the wild, and he lived FREE. Like he belonged, like he deserved. It is better to live free for a short time than live for decades in a swimming pool (a human sized bathtub).
She wouldn’t have just been dumped, she would have lived out the rest of her life in a sea pen, cared for and loved and in the waters her pod and the natives who love her are by. She would have been as free as she could be
