I remember when GW had there terrain book and showed how to make things on the cheap. Like the deodorant speeder. I'm glad to you show people you don't have to spend heaps of money on bases and terrain
Good old days, eh? I saw one of those kit-bashed "OOP" deodorant speeders on eBay a few months ago, had a good giggle.
@@herrunterberg665 i had an old white dwarf that had plans in it to make a whirlwind turret out of corn flake boxes to put on a rhino
@@herrunterberg665 They ARE a company, would be weird if they didn't care about money.
But on the other hand, being older and having to squeeze all the free time I can, I appreciate that the company has focused on convenience.
Now I buy cool bases for troops, and spend my effort making custom bases for characters :)
The good old days god I miss them
The deodorant land speeder was nearly half a century ago
Me: Eugh I need a spaceship set of bases for Rogue Trader. Guess I gotta pick up the new Necromunda bases for 15 dollars...
Guy: Hey guys welcome to my tutorial where I made bases out of trash specifically for that purpose.
WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME, LORD?
Haha, just in the nick of time hopefully!
I think the best thing about miniatures is the idea that you’ll paint a metal cable a metal color to make it look more metal
They're some lovely bases. Using the packaging numbering was a brilliant idea!
Cheers matey! Glad you liked the way they turned out :)
Zip ties. Bloody genius
WHO KNEW?! ;)
@Marshall Nathan no thanks don’t really like viruses but you prolly wont see this cos you are an ad bot
It’s miscast!
I'll admit I'm a bit tired of the big companies serving up an endless line of products for us to buy and being old enough to remember the original old-skool DIY attitude that was ported over from historical wargaming this video really hits the mark. Thanks!
The end results speak volumes and although I totally understand that many folks will find it easier to just buy the 'genuine' article I hope this inspires some to go DIY.
I think your down-to-earth attitude really breaks down entry barriers so do please keep putting out such refreshing and useful stuff.
I for one would be far more proud to have such bases under my minis, thanks for the inspiration folks, keep it coming!
Old-school DIY attitude is what we're all about! :) Glad you found this useful matey
Absalutely love your channel. I’ve been wargaming since 1976, yes I am ancient. I had a sports injury in 1986, that left me paralysed from shoulders down & wheelchair bound. I have been trying to perfect ways of painting, basing and gaming, with this handicap ever since. I’ve have been doing quite well really, but your simple painting techniques have revolutionised my painting skills and has helped me produce a not too bad finished model. I don’t game Sci-Fi or Fantasy much, so my models are historical 28mm figures. But just wanted to say thanks and keep up the good work. Love it....👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
That's really lovely to hear, Franco! So glad my videos have helped you out in this way. No need to thank me, it's absolutely worth it to read comments like this :)
There is so much negativity and awful people in the fandom that they actually cover such awesome people like you. You're an utter beast.
So now my family stare at me in dismay and wonder as I rummage through the recycling, frothing slightly at the mouth, muttering about how much goodness there is. On the plus side, something to do with old bass strings (other than making old string tea).
Mmmm, old string tea, the most delicious, slightly deadly brew known to man.
"How to make industrial bases from trash": a history of industrialisation in Soviet Russia, by Penny and Guy.
This is a remarkably eclectic channel.
Hah, well, I have to take my inspiration from somewhere! Come to think of it, I think I've basically just made the floor of Zangief's level in Street Fighter II.
Very creative! I'm glad people like you exist--it balances out people like me who have NO creativity at all :).
Haha, oh, I'm sure that's not true mate! Thanks for the kind comment
Sometimes I come back to these solid baseline videos as a refresher in life and it's really wild to think how much more quality this channel has gotten in the last year or so.
Beautiful bases, I can’t believe they’re made out of packaging etc. The crazy part for me was seeing the bright blue and orange and thinking it looked garish then the wash going over the top and instantly finishing it off. Subscribed! Keep up the good work!!
I know what you mean! Going super bright then knocking it down with weathering and washes is the key :)
Well done, they are quite convincing!
Also, Rogue Trader, YES!
Wooo! I'm excited for KT:RT too :)
Really loving the music in this one, very reminiscent of the old DOS version of Syndicate
Yeah! What a game that was, oh man.
Thanks! Be sure to subscribe to my channel for more music.
@@90talsGrind done and done!
Have a look at Zombie Night Terror (on steam) - it has a similar soundtrack.
Will do 😁👍
Nice to hear Penny's voice and her witty comments for a change as she has something, Guy you don't have and we are talking finess!! Cheers People !!
Haha, thanks Atholl! I'm sure Penny will have a good giggle at that ;)
@@drpenny9844 See Penny Scottish charm at its best - sorry Guy!
This video made me feel calm and relaxed listening to your chill voices.
This is totally my jam, I live for trash builds 10/10
Me too! Thanks mate :)
The end titles need to be longer. That track right there needs time to shine.
Maybe it'll be a bonus track for the upcoming Midwinter Minis album? ;)
@@MidwinterMinis Yeah but you're also cutting right below the 10 minute mark which doesn't help you in the algorithm.
Cheaper than MDF blanks, and plastic: Get hole saw(s) of the correct size. Drill blanks from scrap plastic, likely with interesting features on it already. I use old laptop, computer screen, TV cases. Thick, durable plastic.
The trick is to first make a hole in a piece of scrap wood board, then remove the drill bit from the saw, and use the board as a guide. That way you don't drill a hole in the middle of the would be base (unless you want one there).
Wow, those look great with the washes! I will definitely use these techniques for my Mechanicus army once I get to Basing. And its a great way to reuse my junk zipties, office supplies, and old cables that I haven't needed in years but keep just because they hardly take up space. That food packaging trick is genius too! Brb, going to raid my pantry for any snacks with numbers on them...
"Why are you stuffing your face with snacks?!"
"om.. nom.. nom.... *terrain*... om nom nom"
Knocking these tutorials clean out of the park. I love how grimdark it all looks as well.
Cheers Daniel! We try out best :)
This is fantastic, one of the best Necromunda base tutorials I have seen!
I use the same trick about the cardboard using thicker cardboard though to make urban bases
I cut the cardboard along the round of the base and then separate it in squares of about 2cm size i create irregular borders like the tarmac or concrete was ripped away by explosions and then i glue them to the base making irregular allignemnt too to create more movement
I use the hobby knife to create holes and cracks on the surface as well
I glue some remains from the cutting of the cardboard on top of the bottom layer to create rubbles hat i later blend better with the bottom tarmac putting sand in selected way and then i start to decorate the bases with sand in and all things i think they could look good on a devastated city
I paint them and they look amazing and like your industrial bases they are made from leftovers
Your industrial bases are amazing too!
Keep up the good work
Great tips Chris! Thanks for sharing :) Maybe I'll integrate some of them for a future video
@@MidwinterMinis I never did a video tutorial about my urban bases, just some photos... Maybe it's time to make a video... ;)
Love the music very 80s sci-fi
Excellent video guys
crazyfrogwales thanks! More stuff is coming soon, be sure to subscribe to my channel for more music.
Thanks matey! Glad you enjoyed it all :)
Using the cardboard box as a base topper is a stroke of genius. Definently something to try out!
Exactyl! Who needs plasticard eh? :)
Very nice bases. Also, very good job with the tutorial. As someone who used to teach people to paint minis (when they came into the GW store), I love a good "how to" video.
Using a box to draw out tiles?! Best idea ever! Faster and cheaper then messing with green stuff. Thx a bunch for this tutorial.
Totally eh? Card all day every day ;)
Instead of cardboard, try using a thin layer of plaster of paris. It sands down to a more accurate circle than you can cut and if you're a bit rough with the mixing, you'll get little air bubbles which resembles pitted corrosion on metal.
Cool idea! I do love messy craft stuff too, haha
Mhm yes, If been collecting all kind stuff already ☺️. I discovered that the material garlic comes in makes some nice mesh like material as well, for example for fences.
Yeah, it's very similar to mosquito mesh! Maybe a bit looser
Just adding a comment to make your "we read every comment" even _more_ laborious. You're welcome.
Not just read, reply too ;)
@@fungustech8371 nah, we suck
The zip tie idea is great, I will have to use that in future! Another option for making heavier duty grating than that produced by mosquito mesh is plastic canvas mesh (sometimes known as granny grating by wargamers and modellers), available from places that sell cross stitch stuff.
Totally, I'm not a huge fan of plastic canvas though is it looks way too big for the scale; their feet would easily slip through the gaps!
For rivets you can use small cardboard circles cut with shortened and sharpened hypodermic needle or bga solder balls.
Haha, sounds like quite a tricky process! I'll just dig my knife in ;)
@@MidwinterMinis When you have a tool (making it takes like 15 minutes) it's not harder than your method. It's quite cheap too. Needles cost like few cents each.
recently 3d printed a building and the floor was looking very basic... so glad I havent painted it yet cos I can use this mesh idea beautifully! tyvm
I love war gaming on the cheap aaand playing with garbage. A+
Me too! Haha
You really can't go wrong with teal and orange as a colour scheme. Those bases look awesome.
Classic colour scheme eh? :)
I'm glad you cited the music cuz I spent part of the video trying to place it. At various parts it gave me vibes of Shadowrun Returns and Quake 3.
Also, I recently had to strip a wrought iron railing and fix some rust. It was big and took several days and at one point a little bit of new rust formed on the exposed metal. Simple to deal with, but it stood out to me that before turning orange, the new rust actually started off yellow.
A nice idea! Maybe I'll add a little yellow in there first next time :)
Teal and orange scheme is very nice. cant wait to try it.
I'm planning on making a tyranid army that stowed away on an imperium space hulk. So this video is going to help alot. Thumbs up.
I HAD NOT THOUGHT OF USING ZIP TIES THAT IS BRILLIANT!
The consistent creativity of you two is so inspiring. Thank you for all the awesome videos
i know I am late to the party here, but I am building Into The Dark Kill Team Necrons right now and this is exactly what i was looking for something that fits the space hulk look. This is going to do nicely.
Again! Thank you thank you. Accessible and gorgeous. You are truly an amazing and passionate channel...I truly appreciate your work!
Really enjoyed the paint job, would love to see something similar but in an 80's synthwave looking style
Hmmmm, now THAT'S an interesting idea!
Absolutely Love the music
Cheers Miroslav!
I love this and I love the alternating commentary format.
Very very good!!
Thank you! Penny keeps me in check and stops me rambling, haha
I have been a fan for many years but I have never Heard penny’s voice so much in one video
Great tutorial. Another cheap material would be strapping band that comes free with some online ordered packages.
Yes! I think I actually had some in my random rubbish collection, too
Very cool idea, I'm going to have to revise my old school Necromunda miniatures.
Nice, go for it Jamie!
Protip using drywall mesh is allot easier than mosquito mesh because it has its own adhesive
Oh, nice! Good idea :)
Thanks for this video. You've inspired me to look harder at my own bases. Crackle paint just isn't enough any more! :D
Crackle paint is pretty wicked too though, to be fair :)
@@MidwinterMinis I'm sure I'll ifnd use for what I've got left :D Quick question on protecting these bases after they're done, would you suggest a spray of varnish, or something else? Perhaps a coat of PVA glue if the base could use that extra effect?
I don't do tabletop gaming. But I DO do action figure customs. And these tecniques are PERFECT for making photoshoot environments! I loved the guitar string idea! And the zip ties. I knew that texture looked familier.
Nice! If you make some, tag #midwinterminis on Instagram and I'll see them :)
@@MidwinterMinis I will do that! :)
Best and most original bases I've ever seen.
My admech army is supposed to be from a world that used to be an ancient alien junkyard. This will be an excellent technique for basing my minis!
Hi there Guy and Penny. I have been following you since the first video. This is literally the only channel I check regularly. You are That good actually :). (And this is the first time I write a comment on RUclips.) So... about the music. I love the music you use, so release them already in some form. All of them. Please? I am kinda ready to throw money at the screen which is something I do not do, ever. The 40K background music idea is just great, and honestly I refuse to find a substitute to your music. Thank you and have fun with continuing the channel!
Thanks so much Richárd, that's very kind of you to say! We'll do our best to get it out as soon as it's ready. Happy that we're making videos you like :) Jump into the comments more often!
Really nice tutorial! Gives me some insight for creating bases for my Necromunda minis.
Good luck Franklin! :)
Being a mid50 guy I just started into painting miniatures and so I really appreciate your great DIY tutorial here. Far cooler than just buy the bases out of the box. This creative part is the best side of the hobby as well as customizing the figures :) Thanks!
Looks at terrain supplies drawer. Looks at this video. Okay I have all this. Great ideas, thanks!
Beautiful, might do something like this for my legion units!
Nice one Casey, good luck!
Great video, the best part about this is they don't have that I got it from this set of bases vibe. You can actually vary it if needed to accommodate a weird stance or position of the mini.
Yeah, totally! Add more bits for more important models, or go really simple for infantry that'll get blown off the board in turn 1 ;)
Love the cake packing with the number
Haha, that number must have signified "delicious"
@@MidwinterMinis I am stealing that for som of my bases
Just wanted to say thanks; I bought the Zone Mortalis bases myself for use with an Adeptus Mechanicus Kill Team, but I was at a loss for what to do for the Transuranic Arquebus gunner's oval base until I saw this video pop up in my subscription feed. This is a big help, and has also inspired me to try Typhus Corrosion on all the team's bases.
Yeah, those new long bases make it hard to match with the pre-made kits, glad I could help you out :)
Beautiful little video! Thanks for making and love the music!!
Will definitely be using this... Thank you!
No worries Martin!
I’ve only just gotten into 40k and it’s crazy to realise how much junk I throw away that can be turned into terrain and bases!
These look brilliant guys. Great work!
Thank you! :)
This was the perfect inspiration/idea push I needed to build up and flush out my set of Titanicus Terrain using cartons and other "junk" from the kitchen. Now I have some awesome looking custom and unique buildings that are not the standard square boxes normally found on the table. Thank you for the great ideas!
About to get started with my Corsair Voidscarred, so this'll be perfect.
Very cool effects. Some great ideas as well.
Thanks Frank!
Another great cup of PG tips (Penny and Guy)😁
Haha, another idea for merch ;)
Very cool video. Will definitely save this if I ever get around do doing bases like this! Really liked the background music. Very grim! Was like out of Aliens or something.
Thanks Matt! Good luck if you choose to make them at some point :) Music available soon!
Well done people. lots of ideas for everyone, no excuses, just use your imagination, and keep your wonga for the more important things in life.
Absolutely! Keep your wonga for the biscuits, then you can also make terrain! haha
The music really kicks ass
Thank you!
Great video ... Thank you. All the plastic trays used for food packaging look useful now.
Become a hoarder like me! Haha
I'm living for Penny's salt at the camera focus
Superb content. I’ll be showing this to my students. Well done you pair.
Cheers Adam! Tell your students we said "hi"!
Phenomenal tips. Way to go guys. Thanks!👍👍👍
No worries Sam!
Could this be the best 40k hobbling channel on RUclips? I think so.
Dear Penny & Guy, Excellent tutorial! Kind Regards Johnny
Thanks so much Johnny!
The zip ties work so well. Nice work. Oh and liked the Necrimunda themed music too.
They work great, eh? :)
Comment left for engagement purposes.
Also Rogue Trader - at last! Hurrah!
YES! It's happening! :-D
RUclips recommendations are on point this morning - new sub. Not my games but it is nice to hear some humour in the Grimdark future.
Wahey! Cheers Jill, glad you enjoyed it :) All our stuff is like this if you fancied popping back from time to time
These are great. Been in the hobby for years and you taught me a few things I wouldn’t have thaught of
Excellent, happy to help Cameron :)
Brilliant. Simply brilliant. Thanks for sharing! 🙏🏻
Honestly tour videos are the only things getting me through nightshift this week. Love it
I love the "tag team" voice over of the videos. Well done. Super cool. You have a new subscriber!
Thank you David, happy to have you on board!
Another fantastic video! Keep at it, your work is top notch!
Thanks very much Michael! :)
Those look amazing! Freaking zip ties! Damn, why didn't I think of that! I'm seriously thinking about rebasing a lot of my old Necromunda figs and this would be perfect. Thanks!
Nice! Always good to remember to keep any zip ties you end up cutting off things in your bits box ;)
This is great AND I just got Necromunda underhive for Christmas. Perfect for being left unbuilt and unpainted like the rest of my miniatures
Haha, don't worry mate, I'll have a SUPER FAST technique developed soon, and I'll share it!
Really dig your presentation style, and this is cool approach for the bases, which I have now stolen... erm, I mean, applied.
Those look nice and I like how you used the card as a base for them. Thank you for sharing.
No problem Phillip! Yeah, card is much better for lazy people like me, haha
great job. all I need to do now is hoard some more stuff destined for the garbage bin....really great vid
I've been enjoying your videos for a while now but this... This pushed me over the edge to signing up to RUclips so I can subscribe!
Thank you very much for the idea! I just glue the carboard and moskito mesh then i cut it around the base. Saves me some time.
I loved the number on the thumbnail so much and never realized that it was from a food container! I usually looked at the numbers on the containers as an interruption to the texture. I know better now. :)
Absolutely awesome crafting! Thanks!
Thank you Terry!
These were sweet, I’ve been making bases with the sand from the base that I’m stationed on
Great tutorial. I've been struggling with my infinity miniatures and this was just what I needed. Thank you.
Great basing tutorial! Always great to see how each persons grime recipe varies. Mine is very much base with rust then stipple on colours after but this looks great too.
Cannot wait to see how you do your corpse grinders.
Yeah, that would totally work too! :)
Can’t wait for the gellerpox!
Me neither! :D
Loved the guitar string and the plastic number thingy. Great timing too. Was about to make industrial/space ship bases for my Drukhari, just much more worse looking ones than these. Cheers!
Excellent, came along just in time eh? :)
