    So this was just supposed to be a simple side by side comparison, but the comments have spoken. I'll soon do a retest without the suppressors, but I'll also compare all of the barrel lengths I own in 5.56mm, which are 10.3", 11.5", 12.5", 14.5", 16", and 18". I'll also add the details/specs on each one.
    Maybe I'll even throw in my 13" Galil ACE just for craps and giggles and to add another data point.
    I appreciate all of the feedback and comments. More to come soon

    Despite fast/slow barrel comments, it's still worthwhile to note that the velocities are close enough to overlap. In other words, velocities are so close that barrel construction can negate the difference

    Barrel manufacturers, barrel batch, number of rounds through the barrels, gas system, suppressors, etc will all make a massive difference. Physics are physics- if all things are perfectly equal except for length, the longer barrel will be faster. Not by much, and this is largely overblown in importance, but they will be faster.

    Garandthumb's test showed the opposite. It's odd how the 12.5 was consistently faster, you should try this test without the suppressors to see what results you get. Who made each barrel?
    Also what handguard is on that 12.5? Centurion?

      So I recently picked up another 12.5", which was a Centurion light weight. Compared to my Criterion Core, the Centurion came in about 100 fps slower shooting M193.
      I say all that to say that your results with your IWI barrel may be a bit less than what I posted in this vid with my Criterion Core. And you don't see much fps difference between suppressed and unsuppressed; it's in the single digits

    • @regulardudegungearreviewsh3132
      @regulardudegungearreviewsh3132  6 месяцев назад +1

      I think it's because of the general thinking that you'll lose velocity with every inch you take off of a barrel. But for whatever reason, there's not a loss between 12.5 and 14.5. And even some ammo is faster out of a 12.5". Classic Arms did a video comparing barrel length velocity a while back and saw pretty much the same data

  • @T20-c8f
    @T20-c8f 6 месяцев назад +4

    Damn man, I’ve heard this same thing else we’re in the annals of the RUclips’s. Couple things I am wondering, as all others have said
    1) no suppressors please, it adds variables.
    2) barrel makes and rifling types, as well as gas tube lengths
    3) round counts or approximate round counts on each barrel. Barrels do speed up after a few hundred rounds.
    But to all the haters, ever see the DOD report on 11.5” with suppressor being equivalent to a 14.5”? Boggles the mind. I’ve seen similar between 12.5 and 14.5 on 556 elsewhere. It’s kinda fucked up man. But for the sake of science and the people, please god take the suppressors off before the crowds turn into mobs. They won’t be nice

      that DOD claim was probably in reference to M855A1, which has been shown to have only about 100 fps difference between 14.5 and 11.5, because it's so hot

  • @aahhronismyname8068

    Just wondering if the 12.5 inch has a carbine or midlength gas system?. Saw another vid that a midlength 12.5 barrel had higher fps than a 14.5 P/w with carbine gas system. Everyone speculated that with a carbine gas system more gas came back to the bcg than if it were a midlength gas system. Which would make a hypothetical sense. Subscribed. 😂
    Heres my speculation based on your results. Without knowing the gas system length. 64g and below the 12.5 shot higher fps. I wanna say powder burn rate. 😂 I'm no scientist so I'm just guessing here. I have no idea if suppressors add or diminishes fps either.

  • @JosephWhales
    @JosephWhales 5 месяцев назад +5

    Man, really appreciate the effort, but all we've learned is that you have a 14.5 barrel that clocks on the slow side and a 12.5 that clocks on the fast side, which is not unusual. The data you're looking for would require comparing like barrels of differing lengths in similar working conditions. Same suppressor, same gas block, etc. It would be best to narrow things down further by blocking off the gas ports.

    Based on how the heavier rounds were faster on the 14.5, the tolerance of the bore and rifling isn’t sealing lighter rounds as tight as the 12.5. But due to the larger and longer size of the heavier rounds the seal is just right where the powder burn allows the 14.5 to perform as expected with the added 2 inches. Just my guess

    • @Subtlenimbus
      @Subtlenimbus 2 месяца назад +1

      Or it could be that the heavier bullets are loaded with slower powder, so there is more burn % in the longer barrel.
