If you're ready to embark on a new gardening adventure, growing dragonfruit from scratch might just be the challenge you're looking for. Plus the seeds grow into cacti, so you gotta do it.
Here's a step-by-step guide on how to get started:
First, obtain dragonfruit seeds from a fruit you've purchased. Then, pat a piece of the fruit down onto paper towel, and the seeds will come right off. Usually, I use a utensil and take a loooong time to pick each individual seed out, but this method is much easier - and you don’t have to clean the seeds at all! Just make sure no fruit gets on the paper towel because it will cause moldy conditions.
Now, you can grow in soil without first germinating on paper towel - and if you want to do it that way…prepare a well-draining soil mix, with a pH between 6 and 7, and add perlite or sand to improve drainage, in addition to the soil. Potting soil or garden soil will do. Place the seeds on top of the soil mix and cover them with a thin layer of soil. Water the seeds lightly and cover the container with plastic wrap to maintain moisture. Lots of sun!
But if you’re doing it germination style like us…just wait for the tails to grow, and then move onto the soil step! It’s a lot of fun watching the little tails grow on paper towel.
Water the plants regularly, but be careful not to overwater them, as dragonfruit plants don't tolerate standing water.
As the plants grow, provide support for their aerial roots to climb on, such as a trellis or stake. Dragonfruit plants prefer warm temperatures, between 65 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit, and can be grown indoors or outdoors in a warm climate.
As the plants mature, they will begin to produce beautiful white or pink flowers, followed by the dragonfruit itself. The fruits all grow on one night when the plants have been pollinated by nocturnal creatures. Harvest the fruit when it is fully ripe and slightly soft to the touch.
And there you have it, a step-by-step guide on how to grow dragonfruit from scratch. With patience and perseverance, you too can enjoy the fruits of your labor, literally.

I picked them up with a toothpick so I don't waste any fruit cause it's expensive.
I did it with a strainer
The fruit itself tasted like dirty water to me so I couldn't care less about wasting it
@@Yaksoup98 so why would you plant it then if you don't like the fruit?
@@Vizible21 same question
@@Vizible21 I'm guessing either they just like growing it or maybe they sell them or give them to people
You know this method doesn’t waste it I would just eat the fruit after extracting the seeds but I agree
I wanna grow stuff now but it’s 2am lol
they thrive in houses and warmth, with watering every 2-3 days or when soil is dry
Don't let the night stop you. Grow that dragonfruit!!!
@@lovelydeath04bro what 💀
@@lovelydeath04they don't have any taste
@@sharonwalton2033 They taste very decent but not tasteless. Also, your taste changes depending on your lifestyle.
I actually sprouted some dragon fruit seeds just this past week. I put some on a damp paper towel, some in a baggie with soil and paper towel, and one directly into soil to see which one worked best...
I now have over 70 sprouts and counting because all of the methods worked a little too well.. I really underestimated my planting abilities and ended up with more than I was intending to grow.
Suffering from success...
The flex😂😂
3-5 years is about right. I have a 4.5-year-old yellow dragon fruit from seed that produced a flower in mid-October 2022. Now, in late February 2023, and at five years old, it’s still growing its fruit.
Ecuador Paloras take a long time to grow its fruit, so I’m still waiting. But, in general, it’s fun growing your own homegrown dragon fruits! 😊🎉🌵🐲
It’s the in 3-5 years you’ll have more dragon fruit😂 I’m a commitment phobe
Planting is an investment. You don’t regret it after
Especially when you get 2 of them as a gift
dragonfruits pretty easy if water them at least once a week
Dragon fruit cuttings off a mature plant can produce jn the first year. Just got some off etsy
Grab an already existing cutting, it’ll grow and fruit in 9 months or
So
I've done a lot of experimenting with little annoying seeds like that, (Strawberries, tomatoes, kiwi, etc.) And the blender method is the method that does the least damage to my sanity. I just put the whole strawberry in the blender with mostly water and let it become mush. Everything except healthy seeds floats, so I let everything settle, gently dump the top half, fill it back up, let everything settle, and repeat until I'm left with a cup of seeds and water.
hi jessie! u inspired me to start growing plants and herbs :) ive started growing thyme, rosemary, chives, chamomile and lavender! i also have seeds for basil, parsley, sage, dill and cilantro but i havent started those yet! i also have a tiny wandering jew plant who came from a bigger one i have! they keep growing and vines fall otff so we keep planting more LOL, we currently have 4 and i have some other plants around the house that im growing! my mom has seeds for lavender, red sunflowers, mixed color sunflowers and snapdragons! all from home depot, i also have a cactus
😍
Me just realising my grandma has hella dragon fruit plants that I thought were just you know yet another cactus she owns.
If she ever wants them to fruit they must climb up a trellis
@@vivimannequinthey fruit best by HANGING. Trellis is the most obvious method
Your voice is very soothing. I'm here for it.
Thank you, that is my only option to add more varieties to my collection. I started with cuttings, but I need many different types
❤thank you! ❤🌵🐲🐉🌱
Thank-you ❤
Most people MASH IT and then water float it. Tomatoes work the same way. And often people do the tomato ferment method on dragonfruit. As someone about to start a medicinal seeds business who already had lots of stock, let me tell you there's LOTS of different methods you gotta work out.
I wonder what they do with pomegranate, I’m my experience pomegranate just gets rank but the pulp itself doesn’t seem to ferment and break down unlike like tomatoes
add also some cinnamon owder lightly to avoid bacteria and fungus
"Great now let's plant it and in a couple months we should have sustainable food"
"but it takes 3-5 years"
👀😳
take the fruit into a bowl of water large enough for the fruit to be submersed>>>and squeeze...The pulp floats>>seeds drop to bottom>>>let sit a bit for all seeds to settle....QUICK AND EASY>>i sometimes use the blender method too>>i am obsessed with seed harvesting from ripe fruit
i am trying to grow a dragon fruit so thank you for the idea 🐱🐱🐱
That’s so awesome 😮
Oh thats such a good idea!!!
Or you can take a thin slice and dry it for 2-3 days after as the seeds will shed off automatically
Can you plant red dragon fruit not white inside
Red inside
They look much better but taste the same
I grew up in the farm I know how to grow all plants, If I live somewhere all years warm I would have all tropical plants and fruits to eat
Thanks❤❤❤
If you graft the seedling onto a mature rootstalk, you can get fruit in 1-2 years
Or in Australia, BUY THEM from the hardware store. I have over 200 plants
I picked them off my babies pjs after breakfast
you can also put them through a strainer, all the flesh will come off the seeds
Once I put my seeds in the soil how often should I water the soil?
Keep it moist. They're a tropical cactus so need far more water than the normal cacti
Omg, we have had a dragon fruit plant for years and o didn't NOTICE
I just learned that today on accident. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I couldn't get mine to grow past the first two leaves. 😔
Time to buy another dragon fruit and try again!
How long does it takes for the seeds to germinate?
I have 4 months old dragon fruit plants here and I was wondering what sized pot to separate them into? I have about 25 of these finger long ones. Pls help.
The seeds sink in water , the pulp floats, so squish the insides of a dragon fruit into a cup then add water, skim off the pulp then strain through a small strainer or coffee filters in a pinch and you will easily get all of the seeds from a fruit for planting 🌵
Or like I do, slice up the fruit, cover both sides with paper towels, wet slightly, and burry the entire thing
😳😳😳😳five years too much I think I need now to buy stems
Why not pass the fruit through a sieve under running water?
Spicy squirrel would eat
Sounds like this whole “falling down” thing is just a combination of learned behavior, social pressure, and the placebo effect.
Would you be able to push the flesh through a strainer and have to seeds there? Or would it crush seeds?
This is good for making hybrids. If you want to grow to eat buy cuttings or graft
nice
You can literally plant sections of the fruit in soil and water as usual
I'm already eating dragon fruits
I just planted a small slice and it seemed to work. Why do I see people recommending to remove the seeds first?
Hey, I know another way where you can just slice a thin piece of the fruit and bury it….
Yes! I did the same and it worked just right.
Wish I saw this before I spent three hours picking seeds out of a piece of dragon fruit with a pair of needle nose tweezers 😮💨🤣🤣
How Do You Make It Taste Better
Idk if that way really looked easier or produced a better amount.
I think it'll faster to grow a new one from the brach
I used a toothpick and kinda flicked em off💀
💀
We can try in red soil also please say
Just plant the entire dragonfruit. Wouldn’t that work?
How do you grab people up then down
which soil u use for planting dragon fruit?
I DO HAVE THAT 🍉
I bought one today. It was £3. I'll eat it but save 100 seeds.
Doesn't it take like years for that fruit to grow?
The easiest way is to eat the dragon fruit then sh!t into a strainer. May take a couple of sh!ts. Same with watermelon seeds.
Wtf😂😂
So good👍
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Alr have one in my basket ig I’ll just eat it
You are awesome, sweetheart,
For some reason, my dragon fruit does NOT look like a cactì but instead a normal plant like.
Who's going to wait 3-5 years to get a dragonfruit
Instead of seeds try to go for cuttings.seeds take many years to flower and fruit..whereas cuttings come to fruiting within two years of planting if taken care properly
I just pulled them off my spoon they separated from the fruit easily and came out when gently rubbed over
TWEEZERS.
3-5 years 😮!!!
3 to 5 years 🎉 to get dragon fruit no way.... I'll go supermarket 3 to 5 minutes I have my dragon fruits😂😂😅😅😊
3-5??!
Bury fruit whole and wait
Tip: do not grow dragon fruit from seed
It took more than five years for the vine to mature
Buy clone from seller instead
Where's the fun in that?
I SQUISHED THE DRAGON FRUIT PIECES FOR THERE MOTHERS BLOOD TO ENGAGE IN THEM, and now my dragon fruit cactus is a bit better
YEARS?!?!?!
5 years you say. Okay
It takes minimum 3-4 years before you see a fruit my friend
Don't you 9 also need to manually pollinate the flowers to even get fruit!
Yeah
Not with every species! The yellow ones don’t need it for example.
Ive heard it takes like 18 months not 3 5 years 😅😮😮😅
Or put ur through a strainer 😅
Are you sure that’s not cactus
It's been about a month now and mine still havnt grown 😭
You should put it in water and it will sprout. Ive tried this method and it doesnt work
Or just use a strainer
🎵👏🎂🎁🎤👏That's great!Twelve months ago,My friend used to work in a studio that produces another product,I once went to camera the development process
Im EARLYYYYYY !, 🤣👀
Or you could just push it through a strainer
Grow from cuttings 😭
2 to 3 years so long time
Cut the shit jesse, we want more deathcore vocals
I would just mash it into a strainer
Just eat it then take a dump outside like how nature intended for fruit to grow
😂😂😂😂😂 You gave a me a great idea lol
5 years to grow, good luck ☠️
You realise other fruits are 7-8 years right?
I reccomend cutting not seeds cuttings not are faster to grow
No way Dragon fruit from one piece
I left the fruit flesh and put it I tuperwear
U dont have to take out the seeds
5 years ffs😅😅😅
I’m thinking 6months😣
This timeline sucks 😂😂😂
☕☕☕☕
Did i ask
Talk. Normal.
