  • I figured out a new way to extract dragonfruit seeds to easily grow them! It works!
    🌵🐉
If you're ready to embark on a new gardening adventure, growing dragonfruit from scratch might just be the challenge you're looking for. Plus the seeds grow into cacti, so you gotta do it.
Here's a step-by-step guide on how to get started:
First, obtain dragonfruit seeds from a fruit you've purchased. Then, pat a piece of the fruit down onto paper towel, and the seeds will come right off. Usually, I use a utensil and take a loooong time to pick each individual seed out, but this method is much easier - and you don’t have to clean the seeds at all! Just make sure no fruit gets on the paper towel because it will cause moldy conditions.
Now, you can grow in soil without first germinating on paper towel - and if you want to do it that way…prepare a well-draining soil mix, with a pH between 6 and 7, and add perlite or sand to improve drainage, in addition to the soil. Potting soil or garden soil will do. Place the seeds on top of the soil mix and cover them with a thin layer of soil. Water the seeds lightly and cover the container with plastic wrap to maintain moisture. Lots of sun!
But if you’re doing it germination style like us…just wait for the tails to grow, and then move onto the soil step! It’s a lot of fun watching the little tails grow on paper towel.
Water the plants regularly, but be careful not to overwater them, as dragonfruit plants don't tolerate standing water.
As the plants grow, provide support for their aerial roots to climb on, such as a trellis or stake. Dragonfruit plants prefer warm temperatures, between 65 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit, and can be grown indoors or outdoors in a warm climate.
As the plants mature, they will begin to produce beautiful white or pink flowers, followed by the dragonfruit itself. The fruits all grow on one night when the plants have been pollinated by nocturnal creatures. Harvest the fruit when it is fully ripe and slightly soft to the touch.
And there you have it, a step-by-step guide on how to grow dragonfruit from scratch. With patience and perseverance, you too can enjoy the fruits of your labor, literally.

I actually sprouted some dragon fruit seeds just this past week. I put some on a damp paper towel, some in a baggie with soil and paper towel, and one directly into soil to see which one worked best...
I now have over 70 sprouts and counting because all of the methods worked a little too well.. I really underestimated my planting abilities and ended up with more than I was intending to grow.
    Suffering from success...

3-5 years is about right. I have a 4.5-year-old yellow dragon fruit from seed that produced a flower in mid-October 2022. Now, in late February 2023, and at five years old, it’s still growing its fruit.
Ecuador Paloras take a long time to grow its fruit, so I’m still waiting. But, in general, it’s fun growing your own homegrown dragon fruits! 😊🎉🌵🐲

I've done a lot of experimenting with little annoying seeds like that, (Strawberries, tomatoes, kiwi, etc.) And the blender method is the method that does the least damage to my sanity. I just put the whole strawberry in the blender with mostly water and let it become mush. Everything except healthy seeds floats, so I let everything settle, gently dump the top half, fill it back up, let everything settle, and repeat until I'm left with a cup of seeds and water.

Most people MASH IT and then water float it. Tomatoes work the same way. And often people do the tomato ferment method on dragonfruit. As someone about to start a medicinal seeds business who already had lots of stock, let me tell you there's LOTS of different methods you gotta work out.

The seeds sink in water , the pulp floats, so squish the insides of a dragon fruit into a cup then add water, skim off the pulp then strain through a small strainer or coffee filters in a pinch and you will easily get all of the seeds from a fruit for planting 🌵
