The actor who is playing Ser Simon is one of this season’s MVPs, and it was awesome to get a look at Stormcloud. Loved that Paddy finally invaded Daemon’s dreams and the shot of him breaking down after the second dream was really well done. Having Seasmoke being lonely and picking his old rider's half-brother kinda works. We’re on the brink of a major battle and things are falling into place for an exciting ending. Let me know what you think.

If you watch the behind the scenes stuff at the end of the episode and the episode of the House that Dragons Built that goes with this episode of HotD, you would see that they indeed actually brought Paddy back. And he’s not just saying the same exact lines as before, there are subtle differences that convey more about Daemon’s psyche/are the result of Alys’ manipulation of him.

I know it got a little repetitive the last episodes with Daemon's story, but this made it feel like it was worth the wait. If he's going to have a believable character arc, it makes sense for us to feel how long and unsettling his time away really has been. If it was just touched on and implied that he was going through so much for so long, I don't think his (possible) growth/change would be as convincing. This was a great episode all around!

  • @robinmarshall5704
    @robinmarshall5704 Месяц назад +9

In the original throne room scene in season one, Viserys is considerably more angry with Daemon. In this scene, he's more saddened by his brother's acts of betrayal. I think that's because Daemon is framing the moment through his own feelings of guilt etc.

I think the scene where Seasmoke was "crying" over the ocean and Mysaria said "Maybe he's lonely" was SeaSmoke mourning the death of Laenor. He died. There's no other explanation. Which is why Seasmoke suddenly started creeping on her next boo.

Except he’s coming back at some point so…

  • @enzorocha2977
    @enzorocha2977 Месяц назад +6

Also, if you compared Daemon's "visions" of the events in this episode and what actually happened in Season 1, they were very different, even if the king said the same words. In this episode, Viserys was quite emotional but in a mopey kind of way, whereas in reality, he was outraged. The "king for a day?" line for example was shouted, not said calmly. The scene was warmly lit in S01; in Daemon's, it was cold and depressing. And so many others.
This could mean Daemon was not only guilty for hurting his brother and running away from the consequences, but also abandoning him when his brother needed support the most-the death of Viserys' wife and child.

    • @kennedyblevins2174
      @kennedyblevins2174 Месяц назад +2

It makes sense that it would be different too, because one’s memories of an event are hardly accurate. The show runners are showing this flashback in a way that is subjective to give us context into Daemon’s psyche - which is great.

I think the only reason the throne room scene looked a little odd is probably because they couldn't get both actors in at the same time for that scene and probably used a stand-in for Daemon. The other scene obviously they were able to get both actors in for.

@JohnFourtyTwo Agreed... Performances are third person although they can bring you through the acting out of an individual's dream or projection... whereas books can explore the first person and you can join characters' inner experience. Performances tend to show you what happens instead of telling you. Screenplays need to combine characters to avoid an explosion of minor characters or offering too many limited but important roles, and to reduce viewer confusion. a lot of side plots and incomplete story lines need to be dropped. Performances are a different animal than writing.

Seasmoke is still a much smaller dragon than the larger Vermithor, Sheepstealer, or Silverwing, so it's not clear how Seasmoke will factor into a battle. Seasmoke certainly is not a match for Vhagar. The writing is a mess this season. They had both Daemon and Rhaenyra sneak into King's Landing. And Rhaenrya''s trip was idiotic, to stop a war that had already begun and meeting with a woman who was powerless, while putting herself in danger of being captured. When I read the book I was on Team Black, but the writing for their characters is much worse than the Green side. This was a great story to tell, but they're over their heads here and not delivering, aside from the big spectacle moments. The CGI and coordination of the dragon fights is the only top tier part of this series. Season 2 is on the level of the final disastrous season of Game of Thrones.

Hmm...I expected a bit more roasting when it came to getting the Queen and her daughter out of danger. They would've been more protected if they'd stayed inside, and the guards failed to keep formation around the Queen and Helena, who herself ended up separated and trailing behind. The guards then failed to maintain a perimeter, so the Queen and Helena actually ran off by themselves and would've been done for if the deus ex back-ups hadn't arrived.
I guess the scene was supposed to convey (in a thrilling fashion) how the small people are turning, but it also just made the Queen's guards look incompetent. Or it was a poorly written/shot/edited scene?? Not a huge deal mind you...just interesting in some way

I really like the Seasmoke claiming Addam plot twist because more than anything else it shows the inner world of a dragon. They are just living nukes with a bond to a bloodline, but this clearly shows they think and feel in certain ways. Seasmoke has been tracking Addam for some time, we see him circling in episode two and then when the guard tells Rhaenyra he was sited at Spicetown she says "yes he does that". Then when they introduce a potential rider to him Seasmoke kills him and obviously makes the decision "ok, enough is enough, time to make my move". Maybe its the blood. Maybe he reminds him of Laenor.

I thought this episode was quite good, the character development scenes felt more impactful than the last episodes, and the questionable moments (Daemon door scene, and some of the Rhaenyra scenes) felt less out of place than similar scenes in other episodes. Particularly impactful in my opinion were the scene of Daemon showing true remorse toward his brother, and subsequently admitting he needs help, Alicent regretting the childhood that made Aemond into the monster he is, and Larys showing some humanity in explaining what he suffered growing up. In general these moments added a lot of depth to characters who felt like stereotypes before, making even villains more understandable, if not likeable. It's baffling how poor the reception was on a lot of platforms like IMDB, scoring worse than episodes like "the long night" of GOT season 8. It just goes to show that many of the unwashed masses just watch the show to see dragons and battles without understanding what drives character development.

*House* *of* *the* *Dragon* *S2* *=* *Disappointment?*
Smallfolk is currently at a 7.0 on IMDb, the lowest rated episode for HOT D. Season 2 has hit all-time lows with 2x3 The Burning Mill (7.8), 2x5 Regent (7.6), and 2x6 Smallfolk (7.0). The lowest rated episode from Season 1 was 1x6 The Princess and the Queen at 8.0.
Why are the writers turning Daemon, George R.R. Martin’s all-time favorite Targaryen, into a useless dumbass of a character who has gone emo thanks to his bad acid/mushroom trips in Harrenhal? I’m aware that’s where Daemon is and it gives Matt Smith something to do, but they stretched his subplot way too long. He hasn’t changed for the better, so what’s the point? Wasted Matt this season.
    *Book* *Spoilers*
So when we get to the Two Betrayers and Ulf is going to betray Rhaenyra because he feels entitled to more land and rewards, are the writers going to ignore Daemon wanting to give Ulf what he wants? In the book, Rhaenyra, mistakenly does not give Ulf that. Ulf and Hugh will betray her. If everybody listened to Daemon, none of this would happen. Otto would’ve been killed years ago. Viserys would’ve never married and had kids with Alicent. Daemon has more experience around the smallfolk than Rhaenyra ever had.
Everybody should’ve listened to Daemon but no. Make the writers assassinate GRRM’s work and his favorite Targaryen. Remember those “Thanos was right” memes? That’s basically Daemon. His thought process is nutty but if everyone listened to him from the start, their House wouldn’t break apart like that. That’s what happens after dealing with a soft ruler. The one other time a female Targaryen wanted the Iron Throne, KL was burned.
If you find Daemon too much of a wildcard, then Jaehaerys should’ve chose Rhaenys over Viserys. In the book, it’s actually Viserys vs. Laenor. Rhaenys was already one of my favorites before HOT D aired. I believe she will remain a favorite once the series is over. Rhaenyra is basically Starlight in The Boys S1-S3. She’s Little Miss Perfect for now although Rhaenyra has done some lying herself. We will get to a point with Rhaenyra where we will start questioning her rule.
Otto is such a POS for pushing Aegon because he thought nobody in Westeros would take a woman seriously. Didn’t Alicent and him run the kingdom when Viserys was dying? But I’m glad Aemond wants his grandpa back after calling Larys a toad. That was funny. Aemond is now in full Sith mode and there’s no turning back. Bringing Otto back will make Ep. 8 extremely satisfying. Extremely. Otto is the biggest homewrecker because Daemon could see right through that c*nt.
Women writers just want to emasculate Daemon like they did to Indiana Jones. To quote Vito Corleone in The Godfather (1972): “Look how they massacred my boy.” What the writers are doing to Daemon would be like if you take Homelander and Butcher and turn them into The Deep. They’re ruining Daemon like Gunn will do to Superman. Make the most dangerous man in Westeros and turn him into a loser because he’s a white guy like they did to Luke, Han, and Indy.
I’m starting to think Ryan Condal doesn’t know what he’s doing. He’s no different than the overrated Dave Filoni in Star Wars. Then Sara Hess and Clare Kilner are like the Deborah Chow and Leslye Headland of HOT D. They hire fake fangirls thinking they know the lore. Sara Hess, a lesbian, must’ve loved watching Rhaenyra and Mysaria make out like that. But in the book, Rhaenyra and Mysaria were known to be lovers. Watching them kiss wasn’t surprising. A W for the LGBT.
I do think part of the disappointment might also be coming from George’s limited material for the Dance of the Dragons. It’s only written in a few chapters in Fire & Blood. HBO writers has to make up newer stuff to stretch the story out. And isn’t the Dance overrated? Targaryen civil war seems like a downgrade from Game of Thrones. Smaller in scope, less characters to root for. And if you expect tons of dragon fights, expect to be disappointed. Syrax never gets into one. Caraxes has one fight against a dragon.
Why does HOT D keep giving us more White Walker references? Nobody cares. We saw what Arya did to the Night King. The threat of the White Walkers is the most overrated thing to come out of Game of Thrones after we saw what Arya did to their leader. The White Walkers were hyped up for 8 seasons only to kill them all after ONE episode and give Arya her fan service killing a superior swordsman. Another moment watching a less trained female kill a more trained male character.
I enjoyed reading a comment on Alicent. She mistreated Aegon and Aemond as kids and is now wondering why they’re not as kind as Daeron whom she hardly knows. 🤣 Seasmoke made Trump’s catchphrase, YOU’RE FIRED, extremely literal. But then practically does a Weinstein and doesn’t give Addam his own free will. Seasmoke became a rapist and forced Addam to mount him like Harvey did to those actresses. Is Seasmoke a racist and sexist too? Burns a white guy. Only wants Black guys with dreadlocks.
The two best characters from HOT D are already dead: Viserys was MVP for S1 and Rhaenys for S2. You know who is the best character still alive in this show? It’s actually Mysaria. She’s the one giving great advice to Rhaenyra and it’s not for selfish personal gains for herself the way someone like Littlefinger or Otto would want. Mysaria was the one using the smallfolk as an angle to help Rhaenyra’s claim. She’s a better version of Missandei.
House of the Dragon is starting to lose some of it’s luster. I can understand the complaints that’s it’s mostly slow and boring. Will never be as epic in scope as Game of Thrones. We’re following the same 5 main characters (Rhaenyra, Daemon, Alicent, Aemond, Criston). Otto will return but won’t have much to do. Then the newer ones haven’t been all that interesting except for maybe Alys Rivers but nobody really knows WTF she wants.
Story is getting stretched out but in pointless directions. Writers are making most of the main characters worse to the point that it makes viewers detached from them and the story. When you adapt from a book and certain things are done wrong, we start thinking it’s just fanfic written on Wattpad like what Leslye did for The Acolyte. And then the newer characters like the Hull boys, Ulf, Hugh, and Gwayne, haven’t been all that interesting. Most of the side characters are written paper thin.
House of the Dragon S2: B
    Ep. 1: B
    Ep. 2: A-
    Ep. 3: C+
    Ep. 4: A
    Ep. 5: C+
    Ep. 6: B-
    Ep. 7: ?
    Ep. 8: ?
I will be generous and give Smallfolk a B- only because Paddy returned. But it was mostly an episode that meandered like Ep. 3 and 5 did. We’ve only had two A quality episodes of the 6 we’ve seen so far. I did downgrade the overall Season 2 from a B+ to a B. Another meh episode from Ep. 7, and it will go down to a B-. Seems like HBO blew most of their budget on Ep. 4. Then writers are taking a few sentences from Fire & Blood and turning it into an hour long episode but it goes nowhere.
Best Characters (For The Entire Series)
    1. Rhaenys
    2. Viserys
    3. Mysaria 👀
    4. Daeron
    5. Rhaenyra
    6. Daemon
    7. Aemond
    8. Aegon
    9. Otto
    10. Alicent
Daeron hasn’t even been seen yet and I already like what I’m hearing from Gwayne. HBO turning Daemon into trash and Aemond into an unlikable POS. I’m still Team Daemon but what a joke he’s turning out to be thanks to the HBO writers. Make him more interesting by making him weirder, ruthless, dumber, and more pathetic. He goes from threatening Simon Strong with a knife to crying in another scene.
Do not expect many dragon fights. It’s severely limited in that area. Vhagar fought thrice in her life and we’ve already seen two of them. Don’t expect to see her fight again until late in the series. We have the Battle of Gullet delayed until S3 when that happens before Rhaenyra takes over King’s Landing. Then what will HBO do with the two Tumbleton battles? Skip them and show it’s already been fought to save money? Tired of watching troops walk to castles and nobody is fighting.
Let’s face it, the Dance of the Dragons is overrated. Some of that from George’s own limitations as a writer. Same with Aegon the Conqueror. I’m not sure Dunk and Egg will be all that fascinating either but I do want to watch a smaller contained story. A more interesting series would be Robert’s Rebellion which consists of more Houses than just one’s own civil war. That feels more epic than the Dance.
    House of the Dragon issues
    - Slow and boring
    - Making popular characters worse
    - Less characters to root for
    - Less locations to see
    - Not enough dragon fights
    - Stretching useless subplots too long
Ep. 7 should be another slow burn finding dragonseeds. Then Ep. 8 will end up being either the best or 2nd best episode of S2 next to The Red Dragon and the Gold.
HOT D = House of the Disappointment
Still better than The Acolyte. I will still continue to watch it. The Boys S4, Cobra Kai S6 P1, and HOT D S2 are all weaker than their previous season but I will still watch all of them. We probably won’t get a Season 3 of HOT D for another 2 years. Just a shame HBO turned one of the best, if not the best character in the Dance and turned him into a dumb and worthless character this season. It’s like taking Vader and turning him into a whiny b*tch. Oh, wait. That did happen in the Prequels.
Seasmoke: Before you die, there is something you should know about us, Darklyn.
    Steffon Darklyn: What?
    Seasmoke: I am your father's brother's nephew's cousin's former roommate.
Steffon Darklyn: What's that make us?
Seasmoke: Absolutely nothing! Which is what you are about to become.
Then Seasmoke proceeds to choose Fab, one half of Milli Vanilli.

I am glad I'm completely unfamiliar with any of the books or lore of both GOT and HOTD. I have only recently seen GOT for the first time, and I knew roughly some of the final reveals, but it was nice to sit through the entire series and not be swayed or caught up watching it in real time. I would've had more complaints/problems with the last seasons, and had biases towards characters, etc. After GOT i definitely got into some of it's history and the Ice and Fire wiki's but coming into HOTD, I didn't realize it even had source material, but I'm enjoying it for what it is, and having only GOT as reference for anything, I can enjoy things without the inconsistencies or spoilers even. I would just imagine it's much different for viewers with and without knowing the books and lore beforehand.
I think certain series are suited for traditional weekly rollouts, especially epics such as GOT, BrBa, Lost, FAM, etc. Others, like maybe Succession, or Ozark, even Barry can be top tier TV and not necessarily require the same commitment... But some of these series, having a year or 2 years between seasons has become really frustrating at times. It's hard to keep the same excitement year after year when it's been so long. Better Call Saul was worth it, but would be great to have just binged after it all ended. Severance is one that has a lot going for it, but the delays can really lose some of the steam behind these shows.

@@HouseoftheWerewolf OK, I’ll buy that, but her visions/foreshadowing seem to be of a more important and/or ominous nature. IMO a recent one we just witnessed in episode 6 actually was foreshadowed in episode 2. When Alicent and Helaena are paraded through the streets in episode 2 as a part of the child’s funeral procession, at the 16:40 mark you can see Helaena looking up in the air frightened as the crowd yelled and threw flower petals (part of it in almost slow motion for effect) in support of her grief. I suspected then she was seeing a future occurrence when the “small folk” would not be so sympathetic. That’s exactly what we saw in episode 6 as the crowd tried to attack her and Alicent and threw food instead of flowers. Helaena is must see TV folks.
