I compared this 2019 to the latest 2021 and I will say, "You've come a long way." I am happy to give you a thumbs up. And I like to watch your growth....

Thank you for the step by step on how to grow seedlings I have watched different programs on growing seeds and this one that you did is so explicit on detail. And never heard of the soil blocker, which I find is very interesting.Cindy Scarth , CoeurDalene, Idaho

You can buy LED retrofit bulbs for the existing fluorescent fixture

Yes you can. Just check the end pins are the same. Got mine at Lowes. They weren’t cheap but I’m glad I got them

Thank Youuuuuuu!!!!! I'm just starting my lights for the first time ever - Not sure how far away to put the lights from the trays - using shop lights. I have a couple that have come up already in my 72 trays - real close then back them up?

Great video! Could you speak about your watering methods? Ill have to check the seed block thing. Also, off topic, what do you do with all your plastic containers from plants purchased in the spring?

Marcia W Hi Marcia! I premoisten seed starting mix before I sow in it (soil blocks are already moist so that takes care of that) and then I only water from the bottom when they are still seedlings, just pouring water into the bottom of the flat. Once I transplant them to individual pots I water into the pots. As for nursery pots, I reuse what I need, keep some for when I’m sharing plants from my garden and then try to recycle the rest. Fortunately more nurseries are reusing or recycling pots now so it’s not as hard as it used to be to find a place to take them. I also post on local Facebook groups in case anyone is looking for them, but I don’t find a lot of takers.

I know everyone does seed starting but I honestly like to get ours from the local green house. Any suggestions on shopping for them?

Buying seedlings makes perfect sense for a lot of people. In fact that’s how I did it for a long time until I started wanting varieties I couldn’t find for sale. Look for a healthy plant, and especially with vegetables that probably won’t be the biggest one. Look for leaves with good color, bug-free and something that is bushy (if that’s what you would expect from that kind of plant). You don’t want to see roots growing out of the pot. That’s a sign that the plant should have been moved out of its pot some time ago and it will struggle when you plant it. Lastly, make sure you harden them off (acclimate them over at least a week) before you plant them in the garden.

If the veg plants already have flowers on them it means the plant is stressed.

Did you notice any chemical smell or any kind of not too pleasant smell from the Mylar film?

None that I recall. I’m pretty sensitive to that so I feel like I would remember if I did.

This was my first year starting seeds under grow lights in my basement. I was going to thin my seedlings weeks ago and then in a video I watched it said wait until you get "true" leaves on them, then thin. Well my nicotiana like green and nicotiana Jasmine are so clustered together that it's darn near impossible to thin without damaging most in the cell except say 2 or 3. There is at least 10 in each cell. The seeds were so darn small it was hard to place them correctly. I know you grow these flowers because I learned about them from you......so do you have any tips or suggestions for me? I am thinking I should have thinned them weeks ago.

Karie R You’re not alone! Nicotiana are a pain to thin! I go in there with a small scissors and, carefully protecting the best seedling, I cut away the rest. Sometimes I can only get it down to three or so seedlings in this first thinning, and I go back and thin again a week or so later. They do get a little sulky about it but they perk up quickly.

@@TheImpatientGardener oh good I am so glad you said this!! I really thought, "I screwed this up" but if you have the same thing going on then I know it's nothing I did wrong. Lol Question, do you think it would be better to thin them before they get big? When they had the first leaves on them I could see each individual seedling, but now you can't see anything but a patch of green. Why does it kill me to cut away the babies??!! I am trying to salvage all of them which is stupid because what am I going to do with 500 plants of each variety.

It probably is better to do it sooner rather than later but it’s harder to identify a strong seedling then. I don’t thing there is necessarily a perfect time.
