Many years ago I grew hundreds of african violets, became a regional judge over time. I used Volkmann grow light stands which were pricey (not ridiculously so) but allowed me a system to grow hundreds of beautiful violets. Those stands had many bells and whistles that made self watering trays of individual violets possible and efficient. You've replicated much of that system in a very cost efffective way. Good job!

Janey, I'm delighted for you that the remodeling project is completed, and more importantly, that you love the finished results!
I purchased my metal shelving units from Sam's Club 2 years ago for $89 each, they measure 48" W x 24" D x 72" H, and the units come with 4 wheels (2 are locking). The current price for the same 6-shelf unit is twice that amount. I also bought the 5,000-lumen shop lights from Walmart. My timers (5 of them) were after-Christmas clearance sale items, and my heat mats were from a garden center clearance sale in October. Like you, I'd much rather spend my money on shrubs, trees, and plants. Try to stay cool and hydrated, and I hope you are having a good week! ~Margie🤗💐🐝🦋

I have the same shop lights from Walmart, I also got my shelf from Walmart. I don't have the funds for one of those nice looking seed starting shelves either. My shelf is also in the dining room/kitchen, it's so much easier to keep an eye on them when I walk by them all the time. If they were in another room or garage I'd forget about them.
Have a wonderful day my friend ❣️

Excellent job of putting together your system. A couple of years ago I actually built a shelving system out of PVC (no money). Talk about inexpensive, and you know, it held up until I was ready to invest in some "real" materials. Now I have the shelf system like you showed the link to and shop lights. I don't grow seeds, no room, but they are great for moving my houseplants indoor for the winter. Thank you, so much, for giving us this wonderful, inexpensive and effective system.

Genius, Janey! Thanks so much for sharing your genus way of saving money on seed starting systems. I purchased a small light and other items from Amazon but this is even more creative and doable. Thanks for sharing all your great ideas and what works and what doesn't. So helpful for those of us just diving into seed starting.

Purchased the same snapdragon seeds as you. As an experiment to compare results with you, I placed the seeds on rehydrated Jiffy brand peat pellets (from the big box stores-dirt cheap) with a humidity dome and placed them under a kitchen skylight. No growing lights, heat mats or soil blocking. About 90% of the snapdragon seeds germinated in 4 days. Time will tell if they keep up with your system or if mine get leggy. I have shamelessly copied many of your great ideas for my own 9b garden. I know I will need the grow lights, heating pads, etc. for winter seed starts - but right now I have plenty of free heat and sunlight inside under my skylight Thanks for the inspirations.

Glad to hear your plants are surviving the heat! We got put on water restrictions yesterday here in so Calif. Yes, they do have ‘Water Police” out watching, warnings, fines and restrictor plates on water main pipes are in play. They say the 20th will be the last day of restrictions but by then…. Dead plants. Gotta do what we gotta do.

Im doing the same with my shelves and and realized I already have a couple different rolling shelving units like that for different purposes but not being used. I can put them to use with my gardening for now to give me more time to know exactly what size and characteristics would be ideal for my needs.. Maybe I will replace them, and maybe not.
I do want the grow tent for indoors and a "greenhouse" type thing for the back balcony in the winter, but buying just the covers for those would be so much cheaper than buying a whole system.
This way I can only get those things I want and need, instead of a full system that is expensive. Plus I have some things already.

    I love that shelf!!
I have the Gardener Supply bamboo plant shelves and while they claim there is enough light for seed starting, there really isn’t. I have to put boxes under my seed trays to get the seedlings closer to the light.
I’m going to switch back to the cheap shop lights for seedlings and then move the plants over to the GS shelves once they’re taller.

I use my kitchen counter with cell trays and my only concern with soil blocking is whether the individual transplants come apart from one another and if the soil remains together when transplanting? 😳 Thanks and enjoy your new remodel👍

I’ve been trying to figure out if I’m too late to start my seeds. I tried to find the cool flower method book, but it’s sold out. I live in zone 9 a, our first frost is December 13. My grow light won’t be here until the 16th. I’m wanting to do snapdragons, Viola‘s, and Indian summer. do you think I will be too late to sow them to try the cool flower method? I might just go ahead and try it anyway and save half the seeds and do it again for spring sowing. This is my first year growing cut flowers, I’m so excited and SO grateful I found your channel! Thank you for all of the great information you share!

Nice set up! I'm planning something similar for a corner of my family room once I clear out some space as I have a similar wire shelving unit already. I also had ordered a bunch of those lisianthus seeds after watching your past seeding video so I'm looking forward to getting those going once my seeding corner is ready - thanks for the helpful info! Question: all of my local Walmarts only have these shop lights in 3200 lumens - do you think those would work?

Hi Janey. I have a very similar setup that I started last year. I bought 4, 32 00 lumen lights from Walmart as you did. I ended up with very leggy beets last year. I decided this year to double the lights as you did and to make sure the lights were as close as possible to my plants. I started celery on 8/1 and brassicas on 8/15. Both are leggy. For this reason I do not recommend the 3200 lumen. I may try buying the 5000 lumen and giving it a try.

    • @audimaster5000
      @audimaster5000 Год назад

Lumen is basically how much light us humans can see. Plants ‘see’ and use a much wider spectrum of light than we do. The old school florescent 4’ shop lights worked as they ended up putting out a wider spectrum. Old school street lamps like Metal halide and sodium or phosphorus ect…similarly put out a spectrum that plants use for photosynthes.
Another thing that’s confusing at first is the kelvin scale. Terms like ‘soft white’ 3200k or ‘daylight’ 5000k do not mean anything for plants. And finally the CRI index suggests the higher the number to 100, the closer it is to daylight- again that’s specifically for our eyes and not plants.
So when it comes to LED technology, they put out much more focused spectrum than what one may be used to switching from florescent or sodium bulbs.
The first generation of LED grow lights were a bit lackluster as the marketing claimed a focused plant photosynthesis spectrum - reds and blues. These ‘blurple’ colored lights don’t do so well as they’re missing the fact that plants photosynthesis practically requires all the colors and into the infra red and UV spectrum that we as humans can’t see.
The Samsung Lm301b or Lm301H led chip is what I understand to be the most efficient and best chip for horticultural purposes. Companies use these mixed together in 3500-5000 Kelvin along with Osram or some other brand of infra red and UV chips for incredibly effective and efficient lighting systems.
The Samsung on 285b I believe is a step below the efficiency of the 301H chips. One can find many varieties of lamps with those and the added ir and potentially uv spectrum for not much money particularly if one is just interested in starting seeds.
I encourage one to read up on today’s understanding of photosynthesis and spectrum along with how we are learning to switch from old light technology to these new super narrow spectrum leds- and how the most commonly understood language or terminology about light has proven irrelevant to horticultural light use.
      Hope that helps

I was inspired by you to start cool season flowers this Fall. Purchased seeds from Johnny’s and also ordered a soil block mold and two heat mats. I’ve watched several videos from Lisa Mason Ziegler (also thanks to your suggestion) about her soil mix and ordered her soil starting products to make my soil blocks. It’s been over a week and still see no germination from my seeds. What am I doing wrong? Can you help? Is it too hot in my garage where I have the seed trays? I live in Georgia and daytime temps are still upper 80’s or low 90’s. Thanks for any advice Janey!
