I used them for my LHD car when I first registered in the UK, but they reduce the amount of light, at the same time as the beam cut off. Have since switched to RHD headlights. They are a solution, but best for a temporary fix
I think 123-Ignition has a ignition system for that- some versions can change the timing via bluetooth. they are not cheep but seem to be pretty bulletproof
@@SarahnTuned The distributor could be rebuilt and the boss for the rotor removed and capped to use as a crank trigger to go into the ecu. Like the RWD SR20DET uses.
Sarah: 1) When UK (RHD) cars go to Europe (LHD) people can stick a small black vinyl strip on each headlight to block the area that would otherwise dazzle oncoming vehicles. It's often shaped like the trapezoid shape in the headlight glass. See Mike Howard's answer, below. 2) Only 50 oncoming vehicles?! Where do you live, the Sahara?! 3) Don't be too hard on yourself, you have done an AWESOME job not only on Mr DOS but all vehicles! I am 65 and I wish I had your skills. 4) Yours is the ONLY channel I have watched every episode of, for years! Whatever content you do, we love it. All the best from Switzerland, Rob
Goodness freakin' sakes, after watching my first video of you, "How I built my dream car in 15min".. I've just absolutely fell in love with your style of videos. As I watch this one, I realize more and more how much information you've obtained to learn from.. Thank you very much and keep making videos, you are very talented.
Half the time I'm struggling to keep up at what you say because I'm not very experienced with cars but I always learn something new and appreciate your knowledge. I'm like the kid in the back of the classroom fascinated but struggling to keep up with the lesson lol.
Not sure about that. The beams cannot be set independently so dropping the beam will also pull down the high beam which will defeat the object of fitting them as an upgrade. With the dip pattern the wrong way round (to suit correct hand drive) will almost certainly not be DOT compliant. You might wing it through inspection but you could still get a pull by the police. I had the same problem when I imported US after market angel eyes for my ed9 CR-X. Thankfully those were projectors so I was able to flip the obscuration plate inside the unit. In the uk we put temporary stickers on the head light lenses if we take our cars to the continent but that is ugly and not a forever fix.
Terrible idea. MR2 headlights are like gloworms in jam jars at the best of times. You really want all they put out in the right place. The usual upgrade for people who can't find/afford Raybrigs is crystal lenses from ebay and nightbreaker+ lamps.
Geez Sarah, take it easy. I don't consider either of these issues mistakes. It is very difficult to think about all contingencies when rebuilding and working on these older cars. What you did anyone would do. It is very easy to get excited and the anticipation of a completed job clouds thoughts sometimes. Most folks would not have thought to thread lock those screws. IT sucks with the ignition issue, but someone will help you with some new parts! Be proud of your beautiful accomplishment.

To sort out your headlamp beam alignment you can bend the tabs on the h4 bulb and rotate it slightly from its intended position. It leaves the beam with a flat profile with no "kick up" in any direction. I live in the UK and have had to do this when I can only get European headlights for cars. Works 100% on my Ur quattro with sport front end. Give it a go, worst case you waste a bulb.
OBD1 code 12 is no crank signal which is normal as engine not revolving. So everyone just uses 12 to indicate it's in diagnostic mode. It's not a fault. I think the metal bits is just a lucky coincidence. Lucky in that you can fix it in the garage without a tow. Anyway all my OBD 1 experience is GM based but should be same.
I can hear it in your voice, don't beat yourself up so hard sis. You made a mistake but you're also doing this alone. You've basically rebuilt this car by yourself. Some help along the way, but not much. And that's honestly incredible. You're an amazing woman. We all love the work you do and the videos you produce. This is so minor in comparison to the project as a whole. Please, for us, but especially for yourself, let this go. You're better than your mistakes. This doesn't define you.
Sympathetic (hugs) for you, Sarah. I feel your pain in having something as heartbreaking as this happen on a project. You'll get through this! Remember the line from "Heartbreak Ridge": Adapt, Overcome, Survive." You adapt to the situation by overcoming the obstacles and therefore, you survive. :)
As soon as you turned the headlights on the first time with one of each I could see the right-hand drive beam pattern on the new one. I'm glad you figured it out though. Smart woman.
I own a 2002 Lotus Espirit Twin Turbo I purchased in the UK with left hand drive, my fix for the headlights was easy I just purchased the US lights and switched them out. They were aware of the light issue at customs but didn’t require me to change them.
YES YES YES. WOoooo MR2 is back. HECK YEA! Even a little tease drive. That exhaust sound! I should have kept my 93 mr2. But after some spin outs that car scares the crap out of me on track and in wet
It's likely that I have a bit of OCD, as well because I definitely would clean those headlamp buckets. You are not alone. I did have a really dump thought that went away quickly, switch the headlamps. Then I realized that the buckets are likely dedicated to one side. I hope you feel smarter now. Also, when you said "boned" I felt many years younger, so thanks for that, Sarah.
I've had those Raybrig headlights on my LHD s13 240sx for 10 years. Don't worry about it unless you are getting flashed. If so simply adjust them using the beam alignment screws.
Hi Sarah, I'm from the UK, as part of my job I drive alot in Europe, so I got the same problem with my lights, (UK drive on the correct side of the road, everybody in Europe drives on the wrong side, thats why there have so many accident's over there) so what we have to do is buy a convertor kit (which is 2 triangular pecies of Black tape and stick them on) it works and if you don't like them easy to take off if there is any glue left on head lights easy wiped of with some warm soapy water
I left my headlights on my Rx7 and just adjusted them. pattern isn't "right" but works well and doesn't blind people. if you are going stand alone EMS and can get a CAS look into IGN-1A coils, they are high power, non CDI, and can be used with non resistor plugs.
Hi Sarah! I just finished binge watching all the Mister Dos videos and I wanted to say that your perseverance and work ethic are both admirable. I loved your dry quirky humour and watching your videos gave ideas for my own VW Cabrio that’s sort of a project car but mostly just a fun summer toy. Keep up the great work! I’m going to go back and binge the Teeter Tot videos now.
Sarah..... i had a similar problem with my KIA. I put the Asian Spec. headlights on the US Spec. car. I tweaked my adjusters to match the old headlight pattern. Been driving it like that for 6 months now and no complaints.
On my S13 Silvia (with projectors) I retrofitted HID's and I had to drop them gown slightly. I've asked many people about my lights blinding them and they said it wasn't bad at all and the light output was still a huge upgrade for me. So my advice is Adjustments. You can find glass housings that except H4 bulds online too. I dropped a set in my hardbody and they were awesome.
Leave the headlights. I have a 92 Suzuki Cappuccino, and I have never been flashed in the 2.5 years that I’ve owned it. Truth is people don’t care or even notice the JDM cutoff
for my 68 camaro i used hella headlights 100watt high beams lots of light all glass looked like the flat face euro lights you are fun to watch have fun with mick beth
Have a look at your favourite store for camera gear for "Manfrotto 468MGRC2 Hydrostatic Ball Head" . It has a quick release which means you dont wear anything out. And the hydrostatic ball head means when you reposition the camera it doesn't instantly clunk to the side damaging anything, it has resistance. Its what I've been using for 6+ years with my Canon DSLR which weighs a ton.
You can adjust your headlights. There should be one screw on the bottom of the housing below the headlight bracket and one one either left or right don’t remember. The black plastic surround should have an indention to fit a long screwdriver through. I feel your pain on the MR2. Mine was not as clean as yours, but it was just PITA. Different problems every time.
Recently fitted Cibié H4 E-codes to my NA Miata. Drastic improvement over North American spec sealed beams. Would recommend if there is not a Raybrig solution for RH traffic.... The Raybrig lamps look great installed in Mister Dos. When you first unboxed them, I thought the up-kick in the reflector for illuminating road signs was on the wrong side for right-handed traffic. Sadly, confirmed, but they look great 👍. Stay positive, you will figure out the distributor fix or distributor-less option fix as well as the headlamps.
Noones laughing , everyone realises easy mistakes honestly documented are nothing in the grand scheme of things . Loved this “ chat” and love you , chin up keep going Bodywork is gorgeous
Hey Sarah, if your JDM lights aren't causing bother to on coming traffic then just run with them. I own a JDM Toyota Soarer in the UK but have a set of USA spec angel eyes lights fitted to my car as they came with the car. But every year we need to get our cars MOT'd, you bring it to a centre and they check it for road worthyness, so I just swap in an old set of JDM lights I have lying around. then after Mot is passed I swap them back. Bit of a pain but it's only once a year.
Running a Link G4+ ECU on my JDM rev 2 Mr2 Turbo. The stock ECU capacitors are at the age where they leak, after going through 2 I went aftermarket with a Wide Band and a tune. Not only does the car run better but it's never had an issue starting since. Probably the best upgrade for one of those, more power, reliability & a USB to plug into a laptop to pull logs.
Truthfully if you sat with your morning beverage and read a tech manual outloud, your fans would watch. Your side comments would bring a smile and a laugh or two. Besides for many of us your life seems exciting. Love you and your content.
You're doing great We all make mistakes as long as we learn from them. Then they are helping us. I don't see how you live a boring let me you are so cheerful and seem to be alit of fun to be around Be safe Sarah!
We all make mistakes, fiddling with stuff like this. Some are stupid, some are expensive (why does mine always seem to be both..) Like others I retrofitted a set of HID projectors with correct pattern to my old crappy/illegal JDM lights. I have about the same amount of OCD with this as Sarah, so auto-levelling and washer nozzles was added too. Never been addressed at annual inspection - and they check for correct pattern every time.
When I lived in the UK if we took our cars across the water to frog land we could buy strips that adhered to the headlights that prevented dazzling oncoming traffic, hope that helps
Sarah...as others have said..you should be able to twist the adjustment screws for the headlights to move the beams to a more LHD pattern...should be enough room on the adjusters for that. Those looks awesome though!
You should be able to pick up Hella H4 replacement housings pretty easily on Amazon or eBay designed for left hand drive. I did a similar retrofit on my own car with the cool pop up headlights. On some cars you need to rewire the stock harness to connect to the H4 bulb but sure seems like the ones on your MR2 are just fine.
The code "12" on obd1 is entering code flash mode and finished code flash mode. So 12 then 25 then 12 means beginning then code then end of codes. Hope that makes sense.
If that was the case then there wouldn't be a code 12 fault code which there is on Toyota's. Seems to me like your interpreting GM OBD1 codes. Well GM isn't Toyota and OBD1 is not standardized in any way like OBD2 is.
If it doesn't fail your local inspection it should be fine but you could tweak the adjust to the right a bit and make it a bit better, To be honest it did look fine. The lamps don't have much in the way of direction either with the reflectors or the glass.
I don’t know if your big door has a hose connection port in it or not. I always think it would be a great idea for your garage door so you can run MS Dos and others, inside and more often. Just like the extreme cold in Quebec City, you are inside a lot due to the extreme heat in southern Arizona. This idea always talks to me when viewing your RUclips videos.
Waaaaaoooo... this beautiful and sensuous lady is the best mechanic !!!! Diagnosed deep problems in her old MR2 and installed very quickly the appropriate lights
Was looking at an MR2. Bought an S2K. Your videos makes me think maybe I need both now. This is a problem. Also appreciate you posting the problems you’re facing before I jump down that rabbit hole.
Try salvage yard looking for a new distributor. Like what we did in the Air Force. We would take parts from the "Canned" jet to repair an active one. there has to be a wrecked mr2 somewhere to get a distributor.
Aim High!!!! Cheers from a Yank in England mate! 🇬🇧 Over here they place "blocking" stickers on the headlights of our left hand drive NAS spec American cars. This keeps the headlight beam from being aimed at oncoming traffic if you can't adjust them.
Sarah I moved from the UK to Spain and couldn't find decent pair of left hand drive lights for Spain on my Right Drive 1986 Ford Capri you could do what I did and removed the glass from the right hand drive ones and place the replace them with the Glass Left hand drive ones you'll lose the clear plastic lens but have the right offset and the better bulbs
Sarah there’s also a way to bridge the OBD one port I’m sure you might know this , you take a paper clip and bridge it, check engine light will flash and depending on the flashers give you the code reference.
I like the headlights. Nice fresh look and it seems to give more volume to the light spread. Is it also better in distance? Nevermind lol. Be creative and turn them upside down?
You could aim the driver and passenger headlight down and to the passenger side to compensate but just a little bit it’ll be fine. The beam pattern is close to being Center just weighted to the left a hair.
Headlights, go for the trucklite LED, for the ECU pick up a used Motec M84 or hundred series ecu, this gives you access to the awesome motec i2 data-logging software and the ecu manager software is powerful but fairly easy to get your head around (download it from the website have a play around before you buy any ecu), has built in wideband so no little extra boxes or junk just the ecu. easy to road tune yourself and only need to do the last little bit on the dyno, beware other ecu brands that are only "good" because some influencer got free t-shirts...
I like that the new lamps don’t really look blue. They just look really new and they REALLY make the OEMs look old and dingy. Man I love Mister Dos. So friggin perfect
I just bought the MegaSquirt for my AW11. I really recommend you that one cause like you im a little OCD too... so it keeps the car clean cause you use the stock wiring harness that you already repaired and invested time on it.
Sarah I don't think you messed up with the headlights unless the MR2s are designed completely different than all other cars in the world. But generally the high and low beams are positioned properly from manufacture. But the directioning left, right, and up, down, is adjustable with vertical and horizontal tilt adjust screws typically.
So sorry to hear about the distributor 😕 I’ve had my 1965 VW Bug for fifty years and over that time I’ve watched the OEM parts dwindle away to the point that I spend a lot of time online trying to find adequate aftermarket replacements 😲
Those are AE86 GTS headlight assemblies. Either Philips or Sylvania actually made bi-xenon glass replacement lamps for them. Installation is complicated because only Toyota uses a positive ground for headlights so relays have to be added.
Yes, definitely go with a standalone ECU. It makes so many things easier and more flexible, and will allow you to delete the MAF and just run speed density. It's so much easier to troubleshoot, too...you can see and log every single operating parameter and see exactly what is going on. A Megasquirt MS3X kit isn't really that expensive compared to the bigger brands as long as you're not afraid of building an adapter harness to adapt it to the stock ECU plugs. It's totally worth it.
Megasquirt actually supports this chassis and has base map files for it as well I believe. I think I will go with Link ECU though based on ATS racings recommendations.
👍🏽👍🏽 on your mr2. I’m just starting on my new project with my Nissan R34. It’s my dream build so I’m moving back to japan for a yr to work on it at my buddies tuner shop. Hopefully in the next yr I can ship it back to the U.S. after the 25 yr ban is lifted.
If we learn from our mistakes then the mistakes are just tools to make us better. Congrats on getting better.

In the UK, we use "Headlamp Beam Adaptors/deflectors" if we take a r/h drive car into a l/h drive country.
oooppps same idea as yours sorry, you must have posted while I was type'in mine our
Are these the stickers you apply to the outside of the lens? Where I live you cannot pass annual inspection with this.
I used them for my LHD car when I first registered in the UK, but they reduce the amount of light, at the same time as the beam cut off. Have since switched to RHD headlights. They are a solution, but best for a temporary fix
Cardone remanufactures these distributors. A bit spendy, but I just had to replace mine, 91 MR2 turbo. Wichita kansas.
How much?
You can order off Summit correct, or not this version cause I know its usually $155 I believe. Summit works with Cardone.

Mike Edward that’s on the first gen MR2 ECU only, if there is no code present on the SW20 it flashes a steady pace without pause.
That's GM specific isn't it? I don't believe Toyotas use an entry/exit flash. Her code 12 is an actual code (no NE or G signal to ECU).
Little issues aside, the MR2 is looking great! I really like it.
Lol
The headlights are fine. My Harley LED headlight has a wide beam pattern. The beam cutoff looks good. Just make sure the lights are aimed correctly.
Love how you were talking about headlights then the camera focused on the headlights we all love...lol
We use "beam benders" in the UK when we drive in Europe. They are low cost stickers around £5/$6.50 on Amazon.
That was really clever with the ball head stud. I wish I had thought of that.
sorry to hear about your problem i hope for the best in the future
@6:18 love the orange lights too😍 Used to fit them to our cars back in the 80's. We called them "Cruisers"
Have you considered getting lengths of threaded rod? You could cut it down into multiple studs for your camera mount.
The headlight things are often called "headlight beam deflectors" and its what we should use when we go to europe.
Aim High!!!! Cheers from a Yank in England mate! 🇬🇧
Over here they place "blocking" stickers on the headlights of our left hand drive NAS spec American cars. This keeps the headlight beam from being aimed at oncoming traffic if you can't adjust them.
You're still my favorite RUclips car nerd, Sarah!
I’m just gonna say you could do videos about any subject on earth and I’d watch them all.
Trim half the sides off the legs of the H4 bulb so you can turn the bulb anti clockwise a bit
robwhite240z 🤔
The reflector and lenses specify the beam pattern, so may be stumped
Thanks for reminding me how much I miss my MR2.... only vehicle I regret getting rid of.
Car looks awsome ,don't worry about the lights here in arizona it's seams like everyone has bright head lights anyways
You can get stickers that change the direction of the lights I think. Us U.K peeps do that when in Germany.
its awesome to see a Woman doing tech stuff, and know her stuff, right on Sarah!
That mr2 is so awesome. I had an 85 with the levin 20v engine when I was 17 years ago.
They look nice. I still have the OEM head lights on my 1988 200sx. Don't worry about the distributor. You will figure it out.
Those are AE86 GTS headlight assemblies. Either Philips or Sylvania actually made bi-xenon glass replacement lamps for them. Installation is complicated because only Toyota uses a positive ground for headlights so relays have to be added.
code 12 is the pm sensor in the distributor , check the wiring of the sensor they dissolve in an oil leak
chin up and move forward you got this this is a place here in michigan that may have it i will check today
Can you add spacers to move the headlight inward a few millimetres? OEM spacers of course!
Cibie e code headlights are the best. I had them for years and the light output is amazing. It takes H4.
I have made many mistakes like the headlights. Par for the course when working on stuff.
