I'm in the South East of the UK, in a coastal area. I have a bed covered in slate with a black membrane layer underneath. Earlier this Summer I thought some of the membrane had become exposed and had frayed. When I looked more closely I was surprised to see that there were in fact three plants with thin black leaves and a pinkish flower in the middle of each. I identified the plants online as Black Mondo Grass. The plants had self seeded. I don't know how or from where; I'd never heard of this plant before and certainly had never seen them anywhere in my neighborhood. It's a mystery where they've come from but I'm happy to have them and hope they will flourish.

Wow lucky you!! I went to my local garden center today and they had these plants for 26 bucks! This is the first year that I'm noticing a lot of self seeders popping up all over in my garden and I'm so excited about it! Overtime, if you'd like, you can dig them up and divide them and spread them around your yard!

@@JhulysAquaticsGardening And at those prices I could start selling them off. I've seen them advertised on line from UK nurseries for about £9.00

Any updates on the black mondo grass?

They do bloom, beautiful pink flowers. It’s not a grass, it just looks like it, it’s a Lilly. Most other grasses don’t flower, they just have seeds on top like wheat.
I saw one in the tiny 2 inch pots for $20 recently, the size that normally would be $3-$5 for most plants. I want some really badly but refuse to pay those crazy prices. I just need to find a neighbor who wlll trade me some.

Go for the third clump and then divide em, potato goes in the compost!

Yup! Potato definitely went in the compost, but I'm thinking about using the last clump in a container. We'll see!

How quickly do plants this size fill out? I have some black mondo the same size. Trying not to buy the bigger, more expensive sizes.

I'm not quite sure...this is my first time personally working with the plant so I'm curious about their growth rate also. I'll be sure to update you guys with how mine progresses over the course of the season.
