The argument labels won't support positivity, i'm kinda 50/50 on, because labels want money, if conscious rappers start selling loads, that's what they are going to start looking to get, the Labels don't set the trend they follow the trend which brings them most money. Reason why they might be willing to listen and Kendrick is giving us this song at the right time is because hip hop isn't selling that much. People need to want change but I doubt it from all the people who complained about this song cause it wasn't a bop, a lot of people just want bops including the ones you would think would actually appreciate music for the soul, if Marvin Gaye was alive and released "What's going on?" now, he would have been killed cause people would say "oohh we just want more sexual healing"
Argh started rambling and forgot my point, my point was that people actually have the power to sway what the labels push. Eg Vanilla Ice, once people turned on him, labels backed off. He went from having the first ever rap Billboard hot 100 #1 and an album that stayed on the Hot 200 #1 for 16 weeks to having an album that failed to chart and sold only 50k copies on the same label.
He had to monopolize and drop this right after the battle so that people would talk about it so quickly and openly. If he had waited people would’ve lost interest and not paid as much attention to this
