After having used Dewalt for the past 15 years, I just made the switch to Milwaukee. I’m a welder/fabricator, and came from HVAC roots. The need for more powerful tools is growing for me in my industry, and a coworker swears by Milwaukee. After seeing his tools’ performance time and time again? I jumped ship to team Milwaukee. Just bought the impact/hammer set with a FREE 8.0AH XC High Capacity battery at Home Depot yesterday for the Labor Day sale. I’m in LOVE 😍
The best tool is usually the one you have batteries for.
Amen to this! Find a battery platform that has all the tools and equipment you use, and all you need is one battery, one charger, and you're up and running.
Yeah but Milwaukee is better
@@AndresDPGMilwaukee has more powerful tools but you can’t tell me how you weren’t impressed by Dewalts flexvolt battery💪🏼
@@carlosf9278I run red and yellow, neither brand trumps all the other brands tools in power, that's specifically why I use both. As far as drills go, I'd take a Dewalt any day over a milwaukee simply because the chucks are better.
@@InuranusBrokoff I run Milwaukee and Dewalt brands tools as well with some Makita power tools. Personally for me, Dewalt is the best overall because of the kits. Milwaukee has some tools that deliver more performance for certain tasks but in the real world when you’re either getting paid by the day or the hour, it hardly matters. What’s important is having batteries. Which is why I have a few adapters with me to use my Dewalt batteries on Milwaukee and Makita power tools.
Legit every one of my work buds is always impressed by my $15 adapter… more so than a tool that can drill a second faster 😂🍺
I’m a commercial electrician, most contractors buy dewalt 20v line. Battery tools are great, makes any job easy. Also they take a beating on the job sites and keep on working. I have no experience with Milwaukee but most plumbers and elevator contractors use them and they all like. Both brands are great, it’s whatever you want to buy, but can’t go wrong with either lineup. Now both brands are making more trade specific tools, sales rep have my company the new dewalt 20v lug crimping tool and battery knockout set, both work great
I started buying DeWalt about 30 years ago. They were the best back then (18v), and have served me well. Once I got committed to all those batteries, I never had a reason to change. That transitioned to the 20v systems when the 18v's started giving out after 25-years. My boys are in the trades and they all went with Milwaukee. Nothing wrong with that, since they are just starting out and didn't have anything invested in batteries yet. I must confess, I did retire my DeWalt ToughSystem boxes after I saw the boys' Milwaukee Packout system. There were a bunch of things I didn't like about my ToughSystem, like the tabs to lock them together (very hard to unhook tabs, and tabs breaking from putting them in & out of my pickup bed), and the latches that were falling apart. The Packout is by far a highly superior system, with lots of options available. Looks kinda funny when you open it up and see all that yellow & black in there! 😆
As a team red electrician you are certainly right, 99% of electricians use dewalt. I like that though, my shit doesn’t get mixed up with theirs. I am happy team red going on 12 years now.
Home owner and DIY person, my garage is black and yellow. I have the dcd999 full kit. However, I learned I do not need all that power to drill a hole in the wall 😂
Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it! 😂
Thanks for watching!
I use my DCD777, a lot, for just drilling holes in the wall.
I'm Team Dewalt, but respects Milwaukee. Also I just purchased the DCD805 compact hammer drill today. I know I'm going to love it.
It's a huge improvement over the dcd796 and I honestly use it more than my dcd999
It's a great drill, let us know your thoughts once you've got some experience with it!
I own both brands. and I have had a consistent issue with having to replace Dewalt before the Milwaukee. They are both solid but it just seems Milwaukee lasts longer.
You can't go wrong with Red or Yellow. It all depends on which battery platform you invest in. I was already invested in 20v Max batteries, so I'm all DeWalt. But I do have some Milwaukee 12v tools. Makita is good also, but it's harder to find Makita in the hardware stores. if you're out of town, you can always find a Milwaukee or DeWalt place to buy stuff.
Well said, Rob! Thanks for watching!
I searched online and there is a dewalt DCB to milwaukee M18 battery adapter and vice versa, it's a shame there is no CAS system in North America like in Europe.
Agree, I used M18,m12 and almost of my tools are Dewalt. It’s depends on your job and which ones adapt to your requirement.
After working in japan the Japanese made makita tools are by far way better then the Chinese made makita that America gets.
I use DeWalt 20v for all my battery powered tools, and Milwaukee industrial stuff for the plug ins. 20v's seemed better than the Milwaukees at the time, and once you're into the batteries, there's no reason to change unless someone comes out with a REALLY good reason to change.....
Team MILWAUKEE!!! Thanks for making this video. Wonderfully done! 😀
Thanks for watching, Mike!
I have both lines. Both in 12v and 18-20v. I have both drills in the test. I collect tools. I like all battery platforms. I just bought that Milwaukee drill on Amazon for $87. I couldn’t pass it up. Thing is a beast with the 6.0. I can’t imagine it with the new forge 6.0. Battery. The dewalt is also great. Works good.
Wow! We can't believe you found it for $87! Definitely be careful buying from 3rd parties on Amazon, especially when it comes to Milwaukee (they don't sell directly on Amazon), but sounds like you may have lucked into a deal on that one!
The Forge batteries have been incredible with all of the M18 tools I've tried. The most insane is the rotary hammer, I can't believe how fast I can get stuff done with it using the Forge batteries.
@@ProtoolreviewsI’m always skeptical but I figured I could return it. It was sealed in the original box I took it out to check it for fake or repaired. It is brand new. Even has the camera sticker that takes you to Milwaukee site to the manual. It was a deal for 3days. Still had it yesterday.
@@Sainte305I’m thinking about getting the deal with the new charger .
@@shanerogers787 I’ve heard that M18 batteries get loose over time. Have you experienced that?
Both are great brand. But, which one more durable after years ? it might be something important issue in my town
I think you should also consider the warranty.
I would be interested to see how Flex compares.
I think this is the most fair comparison I have ever seen.
Glad to hear that! Thanks for watching!
@@Protoolreviews
I'm going to watch all your videos.
Son of Iraq 🇮🇶
Good video, but you left out a very important detail that puts Milwaukee way ahead of most power tool competitors. That would be their no BS warranty. 5 years on their tools (most of them anyway) and 3 years on their batteries. Bought my Gen 3 hammer/ drill bout 3 years ago. It got quite a bit of use over those years. The other week, it started acting up on me, the motor would rev up and down with the trigger completely pulled. To be transparent, I bought the gen 3 as a refurb. I am fortunate to live in a city with a Milwaukee service center about 15 minutes away. Dropped it off there, and within a week, they gave me a brand new Gen 4! I’ve also had to get several batteries replaced as well M18 8.0 & 5.0, as well as a M12 6.0. No hassle at all. With DeWalt, one gets a 3 year warranty on their power tools AND you have to ship it off to their service center at the your expense. Uh, no thanks, not with these current shipping prices, certified mail, insurance, etc.
I ain’t baggin’ on DeWalt. I prefer their saws (table & miter & planer) over Milwaukee. They have better capabilities and typically require little to no adjustments out of the box.
I found that the 999 actually drives a long auger bit more effortlessly than the Milwaukee.
Don’t get me wrong, they’re both amazing drills. The Milwaukee bogged down just a little bit with the 5 amp battery.
The m18 5.0 batteries are trash. I wouldn't buy them for $20.
@@operator8014 The Milwaukee I got also bogged down with the 6.0. I think I just got a dud.
Of those two. The Dewalt. Only because of the 3 speed gear box.
Unless u consider one key version if the milwaukee then u get more speeds then that. Or choose the flex turbo drill which will smoke both of these lol
I just want to say that people should use these videos as a reference only.
My advice is that consumers should try out as many different brands as possible and decide, for themselves, what works best for their needs.
Ergonomics should also be considered when choosing a brand, because the average person will want to use the brand that is the most comfortable for them.
Milwaukee and Flex were the least comfortable for me to use on a regular basis.
You make solid points, we include our insight on ergonomics in our written individual reviews, but leave it out of the head to heads because, as you mentioned, it really comes down to personal opinion.
I'm a Dewalt fan always have been always will be, but Milwaukee is awesome as well I got no hate for the red brand.
By the way, the 999 and the Milwaukee are included in the Black Friday deals
I'm Team Dewaulkee.
I'm into the Milwaukee M18 line, but I also have a Dewalt grass trimmer with a 5ah and charger and looking into investing into the 12v extreme line. I also plan on getting Dewalt circular saw and table saw and resaw. Milwaukee is not impressing me with their saws in general. Except the tiger saw. That one is great.
I like both brands and I'm not choosing side. Makita is great too. Blue Bosch and Festool are also great.
And Metabo. They are big in Europe. Not so much the USA.
@@robk1310 Yeah I'm from Sweden. Don't see much Metabo in my little town though. A shop in town sell some Metabo stuff. Pro brand? Or like Ryobi or Skil?
I'm the opposite, flexvolt and 20v Dewalt, and m12 milwaukee
@@BigZ971 Good on you! M12 would have been a no brainer but I just can't get over the m12 grip
@bjornblomkvist4600 yeah I can understand that. I just can't justify the Dewalt 12 v line because the batteries are almost identical to the 20v stuff. No real advantage there
Dewalt is an American based company. Milwaukee is a Chinese based company (TTI). I’m for team U.S.A.
You can definitely feel the chine when holding the Milwaukee
Actually dewalt is owned by Stanley black and Decker who manufactures their tools in the us AS WELL AS Mexico, Brazil, and CHINA. That’s according to their support website. Unless you are buying mikita tools from Japan or something like festool, you are hard pressed to find a company that isn’t involved with china in some kind of way.
Dewalt is made in china
I’d take either of these two systems. In the working world they are both solid options
Great way to put it! Thanks for watching!
A Dewalt-rep told me they will come out with a new drill next year. I always thought the Dewalt drill was too bulky and weak. But Milwaukee also struggles with heat-buildup.
They are adding new touch buttons instead of the slider switch for the led light and the e clutch for auto stop in bind up situations
Interesting.. we'll be sure to keep our eyes out for it and share our experience once we get our hands on a new model!
First, the 999 is way more powerful than the 996 that it has replaced. The big body definitely allows for a bigger fan to prevent overheating.
Second, the gen 4 Milwaukee has several more safety features than the gen 3, including better communication to help the endurance of the tool.
It’s also slightly larger than the gen 3, which allows for better heat dispersion.
Both drills are really good, and that’s why I need to do my own test.
That Dewalt drill line up ,be it the 999,996 are probably the most powerful drills out there ,they aren't weak!!!! It's just time Dewalt brought out a replacement that is more compact imo.
@@interman7715 First Flex and Milwaukee hammer drills are stronger than Dewalt in most cases, but Dewalt is definitely not weak.
I don’t think that Dewalt should go too compact, though. Both Flex and Milwaukee have been known to get a little hot. It would only make sense that a larger body allows for a bigger fan and better heat dispersion. I had a DCD800, and it got pretty hot too.
The other thing I’ve noticed about the Dewalt compact drills is that they are more inconsistent in terms of performance compared with their bigger drills.
Case in point, my DCD777 outperforms the DCD708 all day long, despite having the same specs. The 777 is considered big and outdated by today’s standards, but it’s a pretty dependable drill.
I have this milwaukee drill and the dewalt dcd800, and the dewalt feels better, has a superior chuck, and doesnt get so hot like the milwaukee. I find it concerning how hot the new milwaukee stuff gets.
That is intentionally because it keeps your fingers warm while working in the cold. Makes sense?😂
🤣🤣
Team Dewalt all the way, it is the best one on the market today.
😂
Sorry,but Milwaukee is better
Much respect to both brands, but after foolishly picking Ryobi to standardize on their platform, I've decided to go with DeWALT. (Don't want to own a bunch of disposable tools, and thankfully only purchased a handful of Ryobi products. All will be donated to my best friend of 35 years who also chose Ryobi. He's a DIY homeowner who knows his tools won't last for several years with regular use. He's fine with that.)
My Dewalt chucks stick, don't hold a bit well, and the knurling burns my hand if I'm not careful. Thinking about moving to FUEL. Any FUEL love / hate chuck stories?
I like that the FUEL is shorter.
These tests are great, but the real test is durability. Which one of these will need to be replaced first after constant daily use? I believe both of these will be fine, but that’s probably their biggest advantage over the cheaper brands.
Milwaukee was ahead in almost all your tests and better priced, but I'm a DeWalt man
I’m torn between the two. The only downside to the Dewalt is that it doesn’t have anti-kickback.
Does anybody have any advice for me?
If Anti Kickback is high on your priority list, Milwaukee would be the way to go.
@@Protoolreviews I’m taking several things into consideration. The warranty is also important. The Dewalt is, no doubt, a great drill, but the warranty is a little sketchy.
There is a video on RUclips where they charged a guy over $100 to replace a board that went bad in his impact driver in just over a year.
i just bought the milwaukee tool plus 2 batteries kit, ace had it on discount, plus a coupon for 220...dewalt not gonna beat that deal. it drilled into brick just fine.
The 999 will usually win in concrete because it has 225 more rpm in hammer mode than it has in regular drill mode.
1) I think the prices you mentioned should include both regular and discount ones. Telling just the discount ones seems unfair.
2) You should have tested torque controller on all settings.
3) The main advantages of DCD 999 seem to be better cooling system, gearbox casing and different light settings. Milwaukee is better at max torque and above all, compactness.
4) Milwaukee features glass fiber reinforced nylon casing and DeWalt apparently has polycarbonate one that has some chemical vulnerabilities, notably household ammonia.
Both are nice and any tradesman would be well served by either tool. But I’m in the DeWalt platform and have invested in both Flex Volt and Power Stack batteries so I got the DCD999. So Team DeWalt.
No hate to Milwaukee if I didn’t have DeWalt Milwaukee would be my 2nd choice.
This guy should have put a PowerStack 5.0ah in that DeWalt...
Or the 9 ah flexvolt.
I like them both there both sweet
Before I became "'Consumable Tool Purchaser"' 15 years ago, our machine shop was outfitted with a hodgepodge of various corded and cordless power tools. I'd had history with Milwaukee, who REALLY take care of their customers after the sale. One sad little DeWalt drill caught my attention with its chuck runout. You could actually flex the chuck's mounting arbor by hand. I christened it, "DeWobble"'.
Long story short, the entire shop is now flooded with Milwaukee tools of every kind, corded and uncorded. Only complaint is, the battery cases crack & break after being dropped a few times. Otherwise (knock wood), they last & last, with never a complaint about their performance.
Now that Milwaukee batteries are charged ad charging in every corner, the chances of any other company getting in, are slim.
I’m a Dewalt user. I’ve used some of my colleagues Milwaukee drills and drivers and they feel horrible to use compared to my Dewalt gear. However, the massive size difference in the favour of Milwaukee whilst retaining equivalent performance has to be given a gold star.
Great feedback! Thanks for watching!
I'm trying to decide between Bosch, Dewalt or Flex for my next hammer drill. I have had total disappointment from everything from milwaukee except their corded tools and recip. saw blades.
You can find info on the flagship hammer drills from all three of those brands in our Best Cordless Drill article, check it out! www.protoolreviews.com/best-cordless-drill-reviews/
Wrong photo for the Milwaukee 48-11-1860 (6Ah). You used the correct battery but you should probably update that little photo in the corner.
Just a suggestion, a more fair comparison would be using the Milwaukee hammer drill with their new 6.0 Forge battery. The Forge battery improves the overall performance of Milwaukee tools by approximately 10% - 15%. This new battery also can be charged from 0% -80% in 15 minutes. I think using the Forge battery, which outputs the same power as the old 12.0 battery, would be a more apples to apples comparison.
Oum
You didn’t use a forge battery from Milwaukee… that would have been a more accurate 1 to 1 comparison with dewalt flexvolt
Milwaukee
What speed setting did you have the Dewalt in for the big drill bit test?
Great question
Am I mistaken, or is it time to compare these to Forge batteries?
Team Milwaukee for certain.
Both are top brands, I hear only great things about both and both also have few bad experiences per customer reviews…though rare.
Do we really need to vote? It seemed pretty obvious. One was smaller, lighter ,faster more powerful in just about every test and has a better and longer warranty.
Home Depot offers the kit plus a free tool
I've always had Milwaukee but anything after gen 2 the chucks SUCK!!! Constantly dropping bits no matter how tight you chuck them up.
I recently switch to dewalt purely for this reason and low and behold an actual drill that hasn't loosen up once since I've owned it.
-- Without watching. DeWalt and Milwaukee go back and forth, and some of their tools are better than others. Hard to go wrong. I run all DeWalt. My brother runs all Milwaukee. We're both satisfied with each other's tools. And I've been running DeWalt since the late 90's. They were good back then too. My my barn is yellowjacket, as is my workshop inside.
I find the DeWalt units run a bit cooler. Especially the chainsaws. In that instance Milwaukee edges out DeWalt in performance (chainsaw) but overheats and shuts down faster.
My experience with both tool sets. The DeWalt tools just last longer/don't wear out as fast. Still rocking my same drill, let the kids use it, get's used 5-6 days a week, more than my brother's Milwaukee, and he's had to swap to a new one.
Team Milwaukee
A criticism about this comparison is that the comparison doesn't show the top power of both drills using the most powerful batteries avaible. The Dewalt has a 9AH and a 12AH battery. How would Dewalt's torque using those batteries compare with the Milwaukee? We want to see which is capable of the most torque possible. This comparison doesn't do that.
Milwaukee also has a 12ah battery. What's your point?
i want more .i want to see them used with more batteries . i expect to see the powerstack and forge in these tools compared . hoping for some fun comparisons . i generally choose the milwaukee due to its size . i 'think' dewalt has a new model coming out due to a picture i saw earlier in the year . waiting to see if they create a driver that really uses the voltage of the biggest batteries .
Go team Milwaukee 💪💪💪
Test the new DCD1007
Dewalt, 3 speed and lasts way longer.
I was at a junkyard the other day and there was a whole pile of Milwaukee tools and batteries that are like 5 years old or newer because you cant buy parts, they crank too much power and eat themselves.
Meanwhile for dewalt there was a DCD996 that looked like it went through vietnam twice and got ran over by a D4, a few nicad batteries from like 2004 and 3 of the shitty brushed drills.
Also here in canada dewalt is cheaper by like 80$ for everything pretty much and people that run Milwaukee tend to be absolute assholes and dewalt is just old dudes that build sheds
I have never ever ever ever ever had a issue with my milwaukee tools. All of my tools are milwaukee fuel and I bought every single on of them !
Those you seen must have been used incorrectly or abused or something , that is for sure !
I also use mine every single day in a professional sitting !
You can have a tool and I have the same one and your last 10 years longer than mine. That doesn't mean mine was lemon, it means you took better care if yours or used them less than I did in the same amount of time !
@@Jasonpmc78-wm3xuIt could be a lemon, but that doesn’t mean the brand is bad.
I had a gen 4 Milwaukee hammer drill that I returned the day after I bought it because the motor made a terrible noise and the chuck was defective. I noticed that there was an odd mark made with a sharpie on the top where the clutch setting lines up with the indicator mark. The TTI rep even said that shouldn’t have made its way into a store.
Having said that I also got a Flex Thursday with a defective chuck that I have to return.
I’ve heard about isolated problems with just about every brand because a bad tool can slip past a quality control person on any given day.
I have the 2904, 998 and XPH14. All are almost identical in performance. I prefer the Makita. Although it might have a little less power it is hard to tell practically. It's more reliable (especially when compared to Milwaukee's damn trigger) and has far better ergonomics. Next I would place the Dewalt.
That's great feedback Jason, thanks for sharing!
We just had a new house built and every crew that showed up had Milwaukee except for a crew that did some interior work and they had DeWalt. That tells me Milwaukee is better for some reason.
I'm red til dead! Even though that DeWalt did win in the concrete drilling test after changing to the flex volt battery, do you hear that obnoxious scream it makes? Every hammer drill is loud, but DeWalt will make your ears bleed. I'm a commercial electrician, if I need to drill holes for tapcons or Sammys, I ain't using a hammer drill, that's what an SDS is for.
The DCD999 is only 100.
Team Dewalt
Однозначно я выбрал бы Milwaukee. При одинаковой цене, гораздо более легкий и мощный шуруповерт. И более компактный.
can i use a vacuum with the milwaukee
Dewalt is so noisy, big and heavy, especially when drilling through Concrete, It's sound is terrible . The winner is Milwaukee. But I love Ridgid for it's pleasant sound when drilling throught concrete, It is so less noise than Dewalt and Milwaukee.
I have absolutely no favorite brand, but I’m trying to decide on a good hammer drill, impact driver combo.
I got the Flex combo Thursday, but the drill chuck is defective. Since that particular kit is no longer a stock item, I doubt that I’ll be able to exchange it.
Something about the ergonomics of the gen 4 Milwaukee drill irritates the tendinitis in my right elbow, so I have to rule that one out.
I’m trying to decide between the new Ridgid combo, because of the Black Friday deal, and just pairing a DCD999 with a DCF845.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Avoid Rigid. Best tool brands are DeWalt, Milwaukee and Makita. Pick a battery platform, and stick with that brand. If you are really bent on going lower grade, prosumer level, Kobalt is good to standardize on. If you really want to go low cost, Hercules at Harbor Freight is the pick there.
@@robk1310 What makes you dislike Ridgid? I actually have the Ridgid mid torque impact wrench and the 3/8 drive ratchet. Both seem to be good quality, and the LSA is really nice.
I am debating on the Dewalt 998 or 999, though, because I don’t like the ergonomics of Milwaukee.
If I go with Dewalt, I’ll get the 845 as my choice of impact driver.
Truly depends on what type of work you'll be doing, what voltage battery line you're looking to buy into, and what other performance and ease of life features you find important.
Check out our Best Combo Kit article, we detail all the best available combo kits from a wide variety of brands: www.protoolreviews.com/best-power-tool-combo-kit/
@@Protoolreviews Yeah, let me clarify that. I mostly work with Douglas fir 2x4’s and 4x4’s, so I don’t absolutely need a hammer drill.
I need enough power to be able to use a decent sized spade or bore bit. It seems like the only drills in that category are hammer drills, so that’s why I said hammer drill.
I currently have a Dewalt DCD777 and DCF787, so I can build on the 20v platform. I will keep using the 777 for lighter tasks, but I definitely want to replace the 787 with something that has better performance.
I also have a couple of 18v Ridgid tools, so I can also build on that.
The DCD998 and 999 seem to have great power to weight ratio, so I was thinking about pairing one of those with a DCF845.
The new Ridgid combo that is part of the Black Friday sale also seems to be a solid choice, especially with the LSA.
I’m not opposed to starting a third platform, though, if necessary. I don’t work in the trades, so I don’t need to limit platforms like trades people do.
@@Protoolreviews I also need to be able to drive 3” to 6” timber or ledger locks into the wood.

Can't argue with that logic! 😂
You’re holding back the 999. Test both drills with the best battery each manufacturer makes then see what happens.
Exactly, it was sabotaged from the start. The 999 can use the other batteries if really needed but is meant to used with the flex volts thats how it was made to work. Given a handicap with the universal battery.
