Making a Dovetail Saw

- In this video I make a dovetail saw from scratch. I used an old cheap saw and filed all the teeth down and made them myself.
This is also an entry to Toolmake16:

The template for the handle and the teeth can be found here:

At the begining of the video when I'm filling the saw plate flat you can see some deep cuts in the back of the saw. That is because I tried using the Paul Sellers method to cut the teeth but the saw plate is too hard to cut using a hacksaw.
I used two pieces of 3mm thick brass and I filed a groove in them so that they would sandwich the plate and be flush at the top. The scraper that you see in the video is the one I made really quickly using a piece of carbide that I was able to bevel roughly using an angle grinder with a diamond wheel.
The saw plate was so hard that I had to use carbide masonry drill bit to drill through it.
The wood for the handle is oak.

This is fucking ASMR! Nothing's more satisfying than watching people doing craftmanship. Simply amazing, well done!
great saw, I love the fact you used the saw to make the handle, great work
So cool! Not too many people can say that they built their own dovetail saw.
Thanks a lot!
Fantastic piece of work. I hope that generations to come will treasure it as being hand made by one of their forefathers.
Very good post. Enjoy the new saw
its so f....kin amazing.................you are fantastic
...ok, now I see how important you steel workers are (231 gang) for us wood working folks, anyway, nice again, I never thought I could enjoy something like this after getting a steel sliver back in middle school. LOL, thanks for making a nice video to go with the nice work-man-ship. I learned all my wood working skills from a German, so the little I do know, I know well and obviously you know your craft very well, so thanks for sharing. .. ... .. ... .
So amazing bud!
Thank you very much!
Git after it, buddy!
'Way to git 'er done!
Beautiful work
Thank you!
Beautiful.
Good job!
Awesome entry again this year! Thanks for taking part. Good luck
Thank you very much!
I think what I like most about your videos is the aspect of progression - seeing you make new tools by using tools you've already made. I'm sure that given time, your workshop will be filled entirely with tools that you've made yourself. Great work.
so nice!!!! conglats man!!! amazing work! greetings from brazil
Thanks a lot!
beautiful
Thanks!
nice work.
Du bist ein Künstler.

Awesome work and beautiful results. Congrats!
Thank you!
awesome, what steel for the blade?
Going from a piece of flat metal to a dovetail saw by hand as to where I'd just go buy one (A) Show you have passion about the craft, and (B) will be the difference in me being a woodworker, and you being a Great woodworker. Cool video I'm looking forward to seeing what you make next.
Bravo! Bravo!
Nice work. Which handplane did you use and where get you the tamplates for the saw handel ?
I've made the handplane myself and have a video on making it and the link for the templates can be found in the video description.
What thickness plate did you use?
Impressive.
How thick is the handle please
Awesome, looks great. Thumbs up!
What was that scraper tool you were using on the brass
Absolutely beautiful!
Thanks a lot!
what did you use for the blade what kind of metal or where did you get it ? Nice work by the way I watched some of your videos and it is easy to build stuff when you have all the fancy toool but you build things basicly with your hands reespect
trapper8015 you can use 1095 spring steel about .015 thick for a dovetail saw.
beautiful work! cheers
Impressive
You are a Master, watching you work is like watching Michelangelo paint a portrait. Thank You for all you do, and may God's favor love and protect you!!!
Svaka čast majstore, odlično! Pozdrav iz Slo.
Great work.
Благодарю! Как же приятно на это смотреть!!!
How do you not have millions of subscribers?
Really great :) ॐ
nice dovetail saw
Thank you!
good(no exception)job well done proper steel and looks great(paint always on the finished job)
dude, this is so beyond cool! did you set the teeth in a specific pattern for ripping?
I filed them for ripping, but since the saw plate is so thin, I didn't even set the teeth and the saw doesn't bind in the cut. Thanks for watching!
That is awesome! Was that a thinner plate than on most dovetail saws? It looks like it gives you a really thin kerf. I've always been torn between western and eastern saws, because I like the push action/pistol grip of western saws, but I love the thin kerf of eastern saws. Regardless, that is a beautiful tool and looks like it performs beautifully!
Antoine Poitras be didn't put any set on the teeth.
Сколько понадобилось времени на изготовление? P/S Пила шикарная!))
I think around two days. Thanks for watching!
Great work! How many teeth per inch did you use? What file thx
respect
Thanks!
Impressive and tenacious to do this all with hand tools!
uuuuuuuu... Very Nice!!!
..... ok, now im jealous of your wood working skills compared to mine, except when It comes to wood flooring, I got ya there buddy, and that's about it, except maybe furniture refinishing and maybe growing pot ;-) take care. . ... .. .
holy sh*t!
..... oh ya, and Billy said hello and don't chop your hand off ;-)
Magno
i wish it was actually that easy to use a rasp just turn up my speed to "Time Lapse"
SAWeeeeeeet
Sweet saw! The nuts are ugly but who cares, they can be easily changed..
Yes, if I get prettier ones I will change them. Thanks for watching!
@@Garageworkshop find a donor saw for hardware. I find old hand saws for about $3 a piece fairly often. They each have 4 or 5 saw nuts in them. I plan on chopping one up eventually to make a backsaw of some sort out of it. I must have a dozen of the things now.
you showed making one but too bad you didnt really show HOW to make one or show details
great saw, I love the fact you used the saw to make the handle, great work
