- I unfortunately never owned this guitar, I just had it with me for a couple of days many years ago and so I took the opportunity to record this video because it was sounding too good to be true.

This is a report by George Gruhn who examined photos of the instruments:
“I have examined the attached emailed digital photos of the instrument, but have not seen the instrument itself. Below is my estimate, based on these photos, of the instrument's value; however, it is not possible to judge from photos alone the exact state of originality and need of repair, so my appraisal is only accurate insofar as the photos are representative of the actual condition of the instrument.
We certify that the guitar described below is, in our opinion, a Martin guitar made circa 1845 which bears and a Martin & Coupa label on the interior lid of the case.
Description: Coupa was a music teacher in New York who sold Martin guitars.
Some of the Martin & Coupa instruments bear an interior paper label in the instrument with the Martin & Coupa logo, but this guitar appears not to have any interior label. As is typical of the period, the instrument has a very small body size compared to modern guitars. The ornamentation of this guitar is equivalent to the Martin style 28 although during the 1840s Martin had not yet standardized model numbers in their catalog. The instrument features a cedar neck with grafted solid peghead with ivory friction pegs (Pegs of this type were available as an option. Most Martins of this time had metal geared tuners.), Brazilian rosewood back, sides, and peghead veneer, spruce top, decorative wood marquetry on the edge of the top and on the center seam of the back, pyramid end ebony bridge, and white ivory bindings on the top and back edges of the body. Some Martin guitars of this period had an interior spruce lamination on the back. Based on examination of the photos, we are not able to determine is this guitar has a solid back or has a spruce lamination, but we note that it is light in color in the area visible through the soundhole in the photo which leads us to believe that it may have a spruce lamination. The guitar appears to be in exceptionally fine condition and has its original wood "coffin" case with interior Martin & Coupa label on the upper lid of the case. This is an instrument which would appeal to collectors as well as musicians wanting a historic instrument.”

What would really make this guitar pop would be a Vans sticker placed near the bridge.
hahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!
A+ comment
We’re quite the clever wag, aren’t we. Milk shot out my nostrils.
Oh god no hipster bullshit on instruments
Jajajajajajajaja
0:07 - Sting- Shape of My Heart
2:08 - Beatles- Blackbird
5:08 - John Mayer - If I Ever Get Around to Living
6:42 - John Mayer - Stop this Train
The richness of the tone is incredible! Nothing can replicate natural aged tone woods...just absolutely amazing.
True, but it’s also due to the fact that it’s tuned to d standard tuning, which gives it a way fuller sound
Best video I have seen of what an old Martin can do. Outstanding sound out of that little Martin. Great playing.
bill heatherly this is the best sounding acoustic guitar i've ever had in my hands. And always will be. Period.
That guitar is unusually fine sounding.
Wow what a beauty.
Way back in 1972 a music store owner (can't recall his name) in Halifax, N.S. owned, and personally played, a Martin made in 1846, that he had found in an attic in its original coffin case, he said.
He showed the guitar to me at the time. I remember is was very small but nothing else about it. But it must have been a lot like this one, and hopefully has been kept intact like this one. thanks...
It sounds so comfy. I can listen to her sound whole day.
My dad found a guitar very much like this, CF
Martin New York stamp, but inside the top CF himself wrote “CF Martin, Nazareth PA, September 1845” which puts the guitar at the transition point between NYC and PA. It has been in disrepair since the 1950s when dad got it for cheap at a junk shop. I have finally found the right person to restore it, and this video is quite inspiring to that end. It’s headstock is off and the joint must be reconstructed. Also the finish has been messed with. But the box and neck are in great shape. Coffin case with it as well.
Great playing by the way. Thanks for your artistry.
Any updates on your restoration?
@@matthewsharayko7463 yes.
All completed. It is a beautiful treasure. A great responsibility to preserve it and eventually pass it along. Thanks for asking.
Words won't come....thanks for sharing. A wonderful instrument and nicely played.
It's AMAZING how good that old guitar sounds, really. Wow!
Wow, your playing is gorgeous and the sound of that guitar is unreal!
The overtones coming out of that little guitar are almost "Dobro-like"
Wow
Nice playing
thank you. little guitar, GREAT sound
Very good spot.
Funnily enough, I’m after a parlour guitar that sounds a bit like a Dobro.
It was really fitting that you shot this video in natural afternoon window light...The light changing as you played a guitar making beautiful music well into it's second century enhanced the timelessness of the experience for me. Nicely done.
You are absolutely right! It was totally random! I was just trying the instrument in front of a mic.. not sure of what was going on.. When i heard the recording and watch the video I was amazed! :)
Looks like an actual parlor, that guitars natural environment
absolutely outstanding sound! doesn't matter wether it's a martin or not - if not: a Martin couldn't be better at all.
such a wonderful, clear sound with strong basses and heartmelting trebles with magic responsiveness coming out of this small body guitar - I'm ravished by this!
Just gobsmacked by this little guitar, the clearness and silky smoothness of the sound and the dynamics it has, it just makes you wanting to keep on listening.
It actually lacks the dynamic range..
What else can i say...
Fucking fantastic. Beautiful playing and beautiful guitar! (Also, excellent song choice.)
That literally is the best sounding guitar I’ve ever heard!! lol damn. I mean I get that the player is big on how the sound is, and you got it, but that guitar is pure magical goodness. It sounds like your in a cathedral
Why can’t they still make a parlour that sounds that good
Alan Neale
They can , but it just takes many years for it to be realised
Its also the player, thankfully he's not playing slide or blues😂
THEY DO!
They weren't designing the guitar to chase a specific style in 1845.
Maybe the Collings Parlor???? Looks good to me but I could be wrong. Hell I’ve never even seen a Collings in real life, let alone play one.
Rich, warm and gentle are the words I would best use to describe this old Martin. Such a beautiful tone out of this guitar. I suspect much of it comes from your playing, but nevertheless.
Wow! Priceless tone from a vintage parlor! Amazing body shape too! Thank you for sharing.
small guitar but sounds huge!!!! Love it!!!!! Also you play very good!!!
LOVED “If I Ever Get Around To Living”
Fabulous Playing Niccolo and I Love the Martin Parlor!
God Bless!
J...
Wow...Blackbird sounds A-MaY-Zing!
Thanks fir sharing Sir.
Amazing, beautiful, wonderful, piece of history, sounds like heaven. I bet the smell of that guitar is tantalizing!! Lovely playing my friend...
many thanks
beautiful playing
Wow,what a tone! Really incredible
pefect parlor guitar sound
that guitar gives off the impression it could tell you many, many stories if it could talk
Outstanding! I hope it is yours....
man, that guitar sounds amazing.
You have renewed my faith in small bodied excellence - now I just have to find this guitar (sound) without a mortgage ...
Nice guitar playing. This guitar is a treasure.
Not sure if I already commented a while back, but still listening for the umpteenth time. You do the guitar justice.
thank you very much. I had the guitar just for a couple of days way back in 2015.. and I listen to this video from time to time to remind how a guitar should sound like.
@@MusicPacman that thing intonates soooooooo well
Brilliant piece and playing!
e. tienne thanks!
That is some serious sonic discipline brother. Really good sounds.
WTF does that mean?
The instrument is tuned a whole step down or 200 cents flat (guitar was built before current A=440 International pitch, but pitch was A=432 until Mid 1800's, then A=435 in the 1850's). Assuming it would have been tuned between there - wondering about effects of pitch tension and what effect keeping it at A=432 would be, etc.
Yeah, and they def didnt use steel strings in the 1840s.
Stevie Wonder said it's an amazing dreadnought
Great Job
Hi Nicolo, this one looks very, very similar to the one in the video "Brady Seals playing his 1860s Martin 1-26" except that that one's got a slotted headstock.
Makes you want it desparately! And perfect selection.
That’s definitely a great sounding guitar. I’m shopping for a parlor right now, so I have a lot to compare it to. All the parlors I’ve played sound boxy and thin. Not that Martin though.
Man.. that was just magic
Nice playing
Lovely sounding instrument and beautifully played.
Collings has a couple of parlor models that sound bigger than what they seem but unfortunately the price reflects that.
That is one sweet guitar, and that sound it dosnt always suck to get old that guitar proves it.
Amazing sounding relic guitar.
Best ever, I dunno, but definitely amazing, especially for its size. If we could only make guitars with Brazilian rosewood today.. :(
A true Gem!!! Thank you for sharing this rare piece. SOooo relaxing & peaceful.🌸😌💜
One word “Beautiful”
i'm not usually impressed with prewar martins as opposed to their modern guitars, but this 1 blew me away!! amazing! how much would 1 like this sell for?
All I can say is good sounding guitar, well played. One of the best videos I’ve seen . That Martin is the perfect guitar. Tks
Wow, I really want to find one of these. They seem to have exploded in price in recent years, in the past you could find them for around $3,000 depending on condition.
Yes the price has exploded. I purchased my 1870s 0-28 in good condition with the original coffin case for 8,000$
I guess you are italian because of your name ha. molto bellisimo! im from uruguay. Really nice sound and beautiful guitar!! is it from 1845 really??? omg!
When I have be a richman I will buy this guitar
The playing!
Wow! Excellent sound!
Beautiful sound !
You're something else, bruh.🤯🤯
Very Very nice...what a sound, no words....
beautiful sound !!!
Nice brother
177 years old!
Playing "If I Ever Get Around To Living" by John Mayer! Love it!
I thought it was shape of you by sting
@@turbodiesel7189 First song was; 5:10 is If I Ever Get Around To Living
Sounds amazing, can't believe is a parlor.
How so? Sounds like a parlor to me
This must be worth, like, a gazillion dollar
Incredibile la quantità di armonici che ha questo strumento. Chitarra incredibile
Beautiful
Stop it man! You're gonna drive up the prices of vintage Martin's!!😮
Well............ Sounds awesome.
Very cute little Acoustic Guitar. I'd change those friction pegs out to Mechanical ones to imrpove its tuning stability & because of the Paddle Shaped Headstock they don't look out of place on this Guitar anyhow.
Best sounding guitar ever
Your playing is so elegant! A guitar that sounds like that will inspire your fingers. How is it that parlor guitars, being smaller, sound so much more immense? Particularly in solo pieces. Big acoustics seem to be better for rhythm, but if there is “acoustic lead playing”, it’s gotta be a parlor guitar or maybe an ovation
Una goccia di splendore... ❤️❤️❤️
Nice Jonathan Wilson playing (;
beautiful sound!!
Bravo Niccolò. Te la meriti.
Grazie ma la chitarra non è mai stata mia. L’ho avuta in prestito solo per 3 giorni tanti anni fa..
the devil wants his guitar back
Lol
Beautiful!
I wish I could have that one, amazing!
Hey man, I love this guitar ! I'm a luthier and I'm really interested by those guitars, it's quite hard to find information on them. Could you send me a face picture and at least one mesure (lower or upper bout, body length...) and do you know what is the bracing ? Tanks for your video !
Um sonho ✨
super awesome guitar, man.
Sounds like a million bucks!
lovely slice o' history
I wish Martin would build this beauty again.
They do, I bought a custom order from them for around $9K. But it has this sound and will only get better with time. One of the songs that John Mayer plays in the video was done on his custom Martin parlor guitar. Cheers! Good luck finding your guitar. Keep the music playing! 😎🎶🎶🎸🎶 9:18
What strings do you use?
I bought an OMJM last year and the sound was a litte similar until I changed those ancient strings it came with. Never got that tone back and it has turned into some kind of obsession by now.
beautiful sound.. what are the strings on it?
So stunning. My favourite video of old Martin guitars. Can you tell me which strings you're using here?
Those were John Pearse
but what a beautiful martin. what is the story of how you got there? What strings are you using in that parlor?
Thanks, guitar is not mine. I just had it for few days from a friend. String were john pearse, not sure about the gauge anymore
Wow! 😍😍 nice sound
Because the title said that 🤣🤣🤣
What a dream!
weird to think this guitar is 120+ years older than Beatles' Blackbird. I wonder how many songs it has played that have been lost to time.
amazing sound..
Sory what is this for song what u playing? :) Btw nise vid
Sorry i can t understand your question. Which song are you asking about?
Amazing. What is the first song as well as the one that starts at 5:10?
The first one is "shape of my heart" by sting. The second one is 'if i ever get around to living" by john mayer
Wow!!
No way is that neck original, replacement fingerboard at least. Bridge looks replaced also.
Monster sound
Sounds processed maybe ..Garage band? . Is it .?
What strings do you play here? I am not really a Martin kind of guys. ( Modern Martin). But this guitar is outstanding. It is hard to believe how powerfull, bass friendly and even this overtone rich small guitar responds. This example helps me understanding why Martin is what they are today.
