oh my sweet summer child. today on a trail a young woman that was probably lighter than my e-bike looked me in the eyes and kept walking right at me riding at 30kmh into her. wonder what freehub could move her away...
The Junkers JU-87 'Zipp' is a single-hub assault bicycle that saw service during the Spanish Civil War and under the Luftwaffe during WWII. It was despised by troops, who could never tell whether they were under attack by a swarm of bees or a suspiciously aggressive bicycle.
I don't get why loud hubs are so popular. From a physics perspective, that sound is coming from somewhere. It HAS to right? Which means energy is being taken away from your ride and being put into making this sound. Also a sound indicates contact between two parts. This means more wear at those contact points. Now the energy loss and wear might be minimal, but its still there, and not something I like. I do wonder how much of a difference these factors actually matter and a long term test between a quiet and loud hub would be nice. But im still always gonna stick with a quiet hub. I love being a silent billet, even if it is a little more dangerous. I have a bell and voice. Clueless will always be clueless regardless if you have a loud hub or not.
I get the advantage of a noisy freehub on MTB trails to warn others up ahead, but how often do you coast on them? On road bikes though it's just annoying and a way of showing off.
@@vladimiripotzky5392 Calling something dangerous without explaining why it's dangerous doesn't magically make it dangerous! And even then the explanation may have no merit or logic. So again I ask, how is it dangerous?
@@DEFKNIGHT Because you won't hear me creeping up behind you and in my line of work that's how I like it, I'm dangerous and my tools of the trade are silent.
Not really... I like the sounds of the hub, of the tires, of the chain and everything... Specially at night, when is so quiet is great to driver and when stop cycling, to maybe wake up some people from sleep, with an loud hub !!...

I like the Zipp 202 sound of all of these. Bikes should be as quiet as possible when ridden so you can listen to and hopefully enjoy the ambient sounds around you. I have a Mavic that's pretty quiet, and old design that's no longer made, in a 2003 Cosmos road wheel. I find loud freehubs to be annoying and obnoxious, the freehub version of dayglo orange.
Hope is the best sealed and the most reliable in my opinion. No horrible drive-ring to remove like a dt Swiss, no terrible bearing and pawl life like the i9, and not shite like any shimano hub in existence.
Only when coasting, which is usually done on descents and flats when a mild amount of friction isn't that terrible unless you're racing. When the pawls are engaged the only friction in the hub is from the bearings, not the freehub, and should be way lower.
That noise isn't the hub or freehub bearings, but the pawls, which usually call for oil, not grease. Grease is probably noisier but stickier and not good in colder weather.
The noise is basically the sound of a metal spring hitting the teeth inside the hub. Thinner lubricants let the springs move quickly and resonate more freely, creating noise similar to how a bell creates noise when struck. This particular sound has nothing to do with friction, even though most bicycle noises are friction-related.
If neon bike clothing wasn't enough here's another way to annoy everyone around you. Don't forget the gopro, drone and the guy holding the camera. Christ..just go ride. Oh almost forgot make sure to charge up dont want those batteries running out on the uphill.
BS.... The loud hub is the way... Also the sound of the tires, of chain, and all the systems having nice clicks, and sounds, the sound of whole machine..
DT Swiss 350 ✌🏼
Angle Grinder...🤐
Cannondale sounds like a hub in bikes from 90's.
Canondale ❤
1st and 4th is such a beautiful sound to my ears
Dang! That mavic looked like you wouldn't need brakes.
😂😂😂
Freehub drag is a non issue. You are pedalling 99% of the time. You only stop pedalling when you want to stop.
@@jimmyhor78guess you've never gone downhill
@@jimmyhor78you must live in a perfectly horizontal planet
He made no effort to spin that mavic. Sounds much better than he made it out to be.
The louder the better, if you been on a trail and people walking ahead of you, they know you coming and move. Better then a stupid bell lol 😂
Works every time! 😂
Bells are not aero
Hydra then

I seriously don’t know how other cyclists deal with the sound of a swarm of bees chasing them. I need silence when coasting.
It’s great for MTB. Let’s other riders and hikers know that you are close.
I'm with you. I would live for some quiet hub options. I couldn't care less about all the racket

Dtswiss 350 is such butter. Follow me anywhere. Too bad you don’t have codex wheels here, those sound lovely
Need a Hope in the mix
I like loud hubs. Who has the loudest. I have a Hunt and it is great on trails walkers know you are coming without saying a word.
I only realised recently on a group ride how seriously annoying loud freehubs are. Much prefer mine which are practically silent

Cannondale!!
Just add thicker grease and it'll be virtually silent.
The one that makes no sound. Every cyclist need a quiet bike.
Nope , the louder the better
Bontrager RSL is simply a DT Swiss Ratchet EXP
Yep
The more silent the hub, the less friction. The less friction, the faster you roll.
That's not true.
Oil lubrication will be loud, more efficient and not last long.
Grease lubrication will be quiet, less efficient and last longer.
