SegaSonic the Hedgehog is a isometric platforming game that was released for the arcades. You and up to two other players play as Sonic, Mighty the Armadillo or Ray the Flying Squirrel, as they attempt to escape from Dr. Eggman's island after being kidnapped and imprisoned there. Doing so will not be easy however as Eggman has set up traps all over his island. Unlike most Sonic games, Sonic and friends have health bars instead of the traditional rings system; rings here instead restore your health bar. The game also uses a trackball to control the characters instead of joysticks and buttons.
Tuffcracker ( tasvideos.org/... ) and rodonic01 ( tasvideos.org/... ) collaborate to beat the game as fast as possible, defeating Eggman and getting Sonic and his friends off the island in record time.

back then when i tried emulating this game, the two strongest impressions it left me were:
-damn this is so hard to control
-wow they really put sonic thru the grinder this time around
This game is intended to be 0kayed with a trackball, so that was probably your problem

Thats what I was hoping for to, 100% rings. But I liked this a lot as well!
It's good to know that the most extra time they give you to beat the final rush is 5 seconds, though I do wonder if that much time is even accessible outside of TAS, given that everyone else I've seen beat it just barely did so in the nick of time -- if at all.
Extremely clean run overall; I doubt it could be pulled off in a real arcade machine with how janky the physical controls actually are, but still very clean.
Impressive! But it does lead me to wonder if a 100% run is even possible considering the formation some of those rings took. I definitely spotted some X shaped ring formations, for example. Then again, a TAS can make almost anything possible. Any chance of a 100% TAS of this game in the future?

A small detail that I really appreciate about this game: When Sonic's running, he *actually* kinda looks like a real hedgehog.

I've actually played this arcade, and this TAS makes it look easy, which it isn't. The game is controlled with a trackball, and some of the precise movements seen here are are almost impossible. Good job, TASers!

Even for the time when the game came out I feel that the animations are very well done.

Sonic's commitment to going fast was so powerful, that even in an enormous death trap like this he refused to collect rings to save frames in the score tally.
...oh wait, never mind, there were a couple he couldn't skip.

Also, it really got to the point where you didn't even fight Eggman, he just knew he was fucked, so he activates the tower's self-destruct sequence, then runs off. He actually uses his brain for once.
I've had the pleasure of playing this, kitbashed into a Golden Tee cabinet for the trackball. It kinda works but it's also quite tough.

It was a System32 machine, same board as Rad Mobile, Revenge of Death Adder, and Jurassic Park. Last of the great sprite-flingers.

I know, but speedruns, man. Getting all of the rings means time wasted on the score results screen when the game has to take time to tally up everything.
