Still ride and love my 2014 scott voltage fr10. I guess its got a little better geo and parts then the early 00's but its still 26" and probably the last of those style of bikes similar to oldschool downhill and free ride. Im still riding with the 200mm rockshox domain and a fox van r coil in the rear. I think its crazy he said 2.35 tires are small and a 65 degree head angle is steap😅 2.35 and 2.5 are very close in size especially in maxxis and schwalbe.. and 65-66 degrees is pretty slack to me😄
Interesting video, love the evolution of the bikes, very similar to the difference to my owned from new 1998 Kona xc machine and my 2023 Atherton AM.130 trail bike. Still love riding the Kona but the difference between the two feels light years away, on the Kona you feel every bump the trail has to offer, steep downhill encourages your weight to move forward…. the AM130 gives great trail feedback is very smooth over the bumps and downhills are fast, controlled and very balanced….viva la difference, love riding them both.
I still have my Blue and green Giant ATX TWO! I have just bought a new emtb not had it out yet but man it's gonna be interesting 😂 I still have the old 2.25 Tiogas on the atx but that was the thing in 2002
reminds me of when the Athertons rode for team GT circa 2011-2012. The carbon GT Fury's geometry were so outdated when they came out they switched to a longer slacker alloy fury like 2 years later.
Foes had an Air/coil fork in 2000. The F1, I had one on my Foes DHS. It was butter. Only about 6.5 inches of travel but it was inverted and had a 30 mm hub. It was an amazing fork. I still have that bike on my wall! I have to admit my YT Tues with a Marzocchi C2R2 fork is much more capable but nothing turned heads like that red Foes!
I had a giant dh team back in the day, mind you I was in my mid 20's now 43, but I rarely hit the drops or steeps now on my tricked out modern enduro bike that I was riding on that old bike
I really like my Supreme V4 but I miss riding my old Specialized Big Hit. I still have the frame and I'm pretry sure sooner or later I'm gonna build It again 🤣
Rache had 10 speed in 2005?!?!? Damn gurl!!! I honestly always hated those old boxxers though. I had the next boxxer after that too, top spec one, I honestly never fell in love with it
"I couldn't ride something this small"- literally to be able to get my hands on an old Enduro bike would be an experience in its own, rn i'm quite literally department store biking it so I guess I'm more ballsy than a world champ
Sure, Foes F1 fork was air or partly at least 5 years before the Boxxer was, and 4 pot brakes were about similar time (hope c4) I'll never get rid of my lawwill 9. Last time i raced/rode, we easily kept up with more than the average person on 29 🤪 and that was a spare of the moment last minute decision 🤘
You can ride with those handlebars, just most people these days won't, I happy ride with 600mm but did have 60mm stem I think, bike stolen before I got to measure it I like to see difference between road and mountain as what I know, road has long stem to keep a more direct line but short handlebars that help steer faster and mountain is short stem for faster steer but long bars to slow or precision steering (both have like stem and handlebars jobs sort of flipped)
I’ve used both, my NX had issues right out of the box with the clutch so it was never really solid. The GX is fantastic. That being said I’m still running the NX cassette since it’s so cheap to replace and it wears slower than the GX cassette. I would recommend running an NX cassette if you already have an HG driver body, and running a GX shifter and derailleur.
His math isn't great, only 8mm dia difference from 40s and 32 boxxer. Didn't know we were using 10 speed in dh in 05, and comparing a young Rachel sized bike to a current charlie size bike exaggerates the size difference. Cool expose though
I would prefer a trail bike or maybe Enduro. I would bet 90% of riders are not doing downhill everyday. Most this tech from downhill doesn't make sense for most riders.
Downhill tech does get passed down to the other disciplines of riding, especially in Enduro 🤘Atherton Bikes do a 170mm travel bike as well called A.170!
@@joeallard205 I get that. That makes sense. But most people can't afford that. He'll most can barely afford a hardtail. Prices are ridiculous. The majority of people going somewhere with a lift are renting bikes around me.
Unbelievable how MTB has developed at the last 20 years. Entry level full suspension from 2024 can chew up the top of the line from 2004. I look at redbull rampage from 2002-2004 and it looks like a joke compared to 2024.
he snapped because he hit a tree earlier on the run day before i believe...so my thought is that the damage was done and when he hit the run the day after it snapped
Also aside from not riding for atherton, he didn't snap it. The aluminium lug de-bonded from the carbon tube and adhesive. There's no galvanic corrosion between titanium and carbon, so the atherton frames likely don't de-bond.
Would you prefer a downhill bike of the past, present or future?
I still use my orange downhill bike on 26” i love it wouldnt change it until its broke 😂😂😂
Such a modest and accomplished person.
2006 Kona stab supreme is what got me hooked mtbing
My 2012 Specialized Demo 8 still gets compliments at the bike park. I love it the way it rides.
I still ride a 2006 dh comp. 😮

Im the Little Slope sister

Was just looking at my ATX 2 sitting on the back porch earlier, fun times.

Nice Giant bikes, oh I was confused by the -maestro- dw link 😂
I really like my Supreme V4 but I miss riding my old Specialized Big Hit. I still have the frame and I'm pretry sure sooner or later I'm gonna build It again 🤣
Everytime the number of brake pistons is mentioned: we had 6 pots in those days!
The price has definitely changed! 😅
Rache had 10 speed in 2005?!?!? Damn gurl!!!
I honestly always hated those old boxxers though. I had the next boxxer after that too, top spec one, I honestly never fell in love with it
Remember when Rachel was so adverse to riding 29"? "I like it rough" she used to say 😂 that came a long way too
"I couldn't ride something this small"- literally to be able to get my hands on an old Enduro bike would be an experience in its own, rn i'm quite literally department store biking it so I guess I'm more ballsy than a world champ
Excellent video. Easy conversation led to great content
Much appreciated!
Thank you!
Cheers
Owen
I currently ride a 2004 Santa Cruz VP free
The Giant downhill team 2005 looks so much nicer than modern downhill bikes...
It would be great to try a new one to see what the differences are. Prices are still very high though and the ‘06 Sinister R9 still works
Still ride every week my orange patriot 2004 . It's had lots of new parts I suppose it's a resto mod the best of both worlds
those boxxers actulually hold up well. sad i couldnt get a damper rebuild kit. rip my 05 world cups
Like that way Owen corrected Rach about being the GOAT😂🐐
I'm just saying what I see / know she is the GOAT!
Cheers
Owen
Does Rachel have a fan club ? I first met her at fortwilliam 10 years ago and have been a fan ever since .
Good Question - She should have!
Cheers

I still using a 2013 KHS DH300

I just wrote a comment about that fork! I had/have one!

For anyone who has used both SRAM Nx and Gx drive chains, is Gx truly better than Nx?
I’ve used both, my NX had issues right out of the box with the clutch so it was never really solid. The GX is fantastic. That being said I’m still running the NX cassette since it’s so cheap to replace and it wears slower than the GX cassette. @@RedRidesMTB 👍 Thanks for the help.
harder to ride, these modern bikes are cheat codes imo. old bikes are sweet!
What travel was the Giant?
From memory I think the production bikes with stock shock's had 8.25" or 210mm on the rear
Cheers
Owen
Atherton full power long travel E bike pls.
So what's the point of having 9 sprockets on the cassette? Why not remove the 2 unused sprockets & replace them with spacers?
Proof that all this new tech isn't needed if your good enough anyway. People these days upgrade there bikes before there own skills
2.5 continentals? 🤔
They only do the DH tyres in 2.4 unless these are proto tyres.
the embargo won then eh?
First 🥳 keep up the informative work 🤙🏽
Thanks!🥇
Thank you!
U can upgrade for less then 50 bucks for the stem and handlebars and giants are 20 dollar bikes I mean
And ur complaining a cheap bike to a really expensive bike not fair man

@gmbntech yes it does and it's usually useless for the average rider.
Interesting thought, but would an average rider feel more confident on a trail bike of today or a trail bike from 10/20 years ago?
That’s why I have 6 bikes!!! When you’re taking a chairlift up the hill a full DH bike is the only way to go down!
@@joeallard205 I get that. That makes sense. But most people can't afford that. He'll most can barely afford a hardtail. Prices are ridiculous. The majority of people going somewhere with a lift are renting bikes around me.

there are no 2.5 continentals, 2.4 or 2.6
with respect to Rachel...not a fan of the design of the Atherton with their round tubes and connection points it looks like a plumber pipe
They're tubes like they use for sailing masts, if they weren't round, the stresses would be unevenly distributed and it would fatigue
Bikes have had round tubes forever what you on about lol
Wow. You're telling me that bikes, have changed in the last 2 decades, consider my mind blown🙄
Thumbs down for the annoying adverts.
Boxxer WC was worse fork what i ever had.
Many problems with air system and poor quality.
Fox 40 was better and also 888
Bernard kerr Did he not snap the frame on that Athrton and have to use his last prototype frame to finish though?
he snapped because he hit a tree earlier on the run day before i believe...so my thought is that the damage was done and when he hit the run the day after it snapped
Bernard Kerr rides for Pivot, not Atherton.
Also aside from not riding for atherton, he didn't snap it. The aluminium lug de-bonded from the carbon tube and adhesive. There's no galvanic corrosion between titanium and carbon, so the atherton frames likely don't de-bond.
