Of all crazy things to do I joined a marching band recently as an elderly comeback trumpeter that hasn't played seriously for nigh on a half century til 7 months ago ( been on my bucket list 🤗)
First rehearsal (second cornet) the double triple fortes required on the Souza were at a level I hadn't attempted since College so much so that half way through rehearsal l discovered I had moved my mouthpiece up significantly to get enough flesh in the horn to hear what I was playing.
The next day I couldn't play at all on my old thinned out setup so I threw it in the trash can, good riddance. 🤢 Could play up to F # on the better centered shape and that's was it . Took 3 days to regain G on the staff, going on two weeks now working my way back and forth up the ladder and presently struggling with D on the staff 🤪. Hope shines eternal. 🌅 Your post here today has been quite helpful , seems to apply to a significant adjustment to embouchure as well as stale overblown chops. Thanks 😊

I've found that lanolin is great for my lips, especially if they are chapped. I put some on at night and the next morning the feel great.

What is a proper warm up before playing live? I've found I overdue it in warm-ups or don't get my chops to the best level they can be. Still looking for that perfect middle ground.

For me it's some mouthpiece buzzing, some leadpipe buzzing, then some long tones/lip slurs/finger flexibilities.

total time of the above warm-up is maybe 10-15 min

Another informative video, Trent. My problem is I feel like my lip tissue breaks down after about 1 hr of playing. This has been going on about a year. I've tried taking long breaks of like a couple of weeks but it comes right back. When it happens my tone becomes thin and the notes sound frosty. My embobechure muscles feel good. It's all in the lip support. Any suggestions? BTW, loving my ACB Doubler flugel!

do you do long tones at the end of your practice session?

@@austincustom No because my lips feel like they are burning and too fatigued. Use to be able to play for hrs with no problems. Wondering if Ive done damage to my lip tissue.

@@austincustom That's a very good question, Trent. I was playing a size 7 and went to a 12 and that has definitely helped a lot.
