Great Borne is customarily climbed from the Ennerdale side of the fell, with the car park beneath Bowness Knott being the usual starting point. The route follows Rake Beck for a short distance and skirts the Herdus crags on the eastern side to gain the summit.
Great Borne's southern slopes are of some interest, they fall away precipitously towards Ennerdale Water with steep crags and scree which are composed of pink granophyre rock which give these slopes a reddish tinge (see picture). Approximately halfway between Great Borne and the part of the fell labelled Herdus on the 1:50,000 O.S. map is the boundary between the Skiddaw Group and the Ennerdale Granophyre intrusion.
The outlying low summit of Bowness Knott (333 m (1,093 ft)) also lies to the south. It is a geological Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), showing the granophyre in contact with Skiddaw Slate.
Bowness Knott gives good views of Ennerdale Water and is an easy climb from the car park which lies at its foot. Historians have also found evidence of an old (possibly Middle Ages) field system on the lower southern slopes of Great Borne below the crags and scree. The northern flanks of the fell descend to the Floutern Pass, a pedestrian route between Ennerdale and Buttermere. To the east Great Borne is connected to the neighbouring fell of Starling Dodd by a ridge, while the western slopes descend quickly to the low ground of the west Cumbrian plain.
Starling Dodd stands on the northern branch, dividing Buttermere and Ennerdale.
The Buttermere-Ennerdale watershed runs north-west from Haystacks, climbing over High Crag, High Stile and Red Pike, the three fells of Buttermere Edge. The ridge then loses its craggy character, swinging westerly over the grassy Starling Dodd to its terminus at Great Borne.
The western ridge of Red Pike swings down, away from the craggy Buttermere front of Ling Cove, and then rises to the subsidiary top of Little Dodd, 1,935 ft (590 m). This is generally considered to be a part of Red Pike, the territory of Starling Dodd beginning at the next depression westward. A short climb on grass then leads to the summit, a rounded, but quite shapely grassy dome sitting atop a broad ridge.
Alfred Wainwright wrote that Starling Dodd was the final fell he climbed during his research for the books. As such, some Wainwright-baggers save Starling Dodd to be their last Wainwright fell in honour of this.

Hi Andy and Billy. Another lovely route. Haven't been up those fells yet so this is a great recommendation. Been introducing our friends to The Lakes this past week and they have loved it. They went back home to Somerset today and can't wait to come back up. ATB Brian and Jill 😊😊

    Superb vid Andy.
That bought back great memories of last year when I met a lovely Scottish lady in the Bowness Knott CP who asked me if I would accompany her up G Borne and Starling Dodd, her last 2 Wainwrights!!
We had a great day and thoroughly enjoyed each other’s company.
    Great drone footage .

Ennerdale is as nice a place as any valley in The Lakes & probably the remotest! A good walk you've done here & imagine it's very quiet away from the madding crowd 😊😊 interesting to hear you say about Wales being too busy Andy & must agree it is not on my radar due to far too many people for my liking, I'm quite happy going over The Lakeland fells early ion in the day before the tourists arrive 😂😂 great walk with you & of course Billy The Rockstar 🐶🐕❤🎉

Loved that Andy, especially the route up. Wish I’d known about it. When we did Great Borne we did Brown How first, then through the scree below Herdus and up the north west ridge, neither of which were much fun 😢
Best wishes from Charlie & me.

A nice little route that Andy. 2 Wainwrights I've not bagged yet. I have done a few fells near there though... in fact my Dad's last two Wainwrights were Caw Fell and (I'm guessing but I think it was Haycock without me looking at the map). We had champagne on the summit. I've still about 60 to do but I've plans for a few this summer to get a load knocked off. Thanks for discussing my video and giving us the shout out.

Superb circuit, Andy, as always. That's an intriguing way up and as always with your quieter routes up, I'm sat here with the OS map following the route! I'll try that way next time I'm heading up to Herdus, which is a slog from whatever direction. ;-) I remember that ghyll going down and you're right, there is no path or easy route down from the col to the ghyll path itself, so quite tiring on the ankles and knees before you get to the last steep descent. That's an impressive total of hills climbed and your knowledge and experience shines through on every video.

Fabulous video Andy and such good information on the route and scramble up. It looks quite a slog following the beck up but the waterfalls and scenery are stunning. Great drone footage of the waterfalls too! Can you ascend to the left of Herdus from the road stile Andy and do the full ridge that way. It doesnt show much on the map. Ive only been to Ennerdale once with all the family and we just did a round trip of the lake and did Anglers Crag at the end. Very enjoyable but ive all the hills to do yet. Cheers Andy and the Rock Star 🙂

Hiya Tony thanks for watching buddy and the great feedback...on the 1:25 OS map there's a traverse path runs up from the left of Rake Beck to the Summit of Herdus it's clear on the Fell although I've not used it myself I know it's there.
      Thanks again mate

Herdus has an incomplete contour ring on the OS app 1:25,000 map. On the 1:50,000 map, there’s an NT symbol where the break is on the more detailed map. Somehow, the symbol on the 1:50,000 has affected the 1:25,000 map, the kind of oddity which intrigues me and is probably of zero interest to anybody else. That drone shot made me want to visit. As I always enjoy videos which include dogs, you’re getting a definite thumbs up from me.
