The only way we ever get a president chosen mostly by the people, is when it's an unexpected landslide in both elections. Usually the only difference in the two running normally, is what they advertise and what breadcrumbs we get to give the appearance, they're different. Party is almost irrelevant at the federal level. It's how they keep the balance.

I was stationed overseas with a guy and we were roommates in an apartment. After deployment, he ran for office and spent 2 terms in the state legislature. He was a middle of the road independent... in private, but his public political platform was fundamentalist religious conservative. Because that was the slot the party needed him to fill, and it worked.
I would say that the median age of a politician should be 45 years old because it's time for the older people who are in DC need to retire and let new blood have a chance to get make a difference and age is a factor it's not just Democrats who are being chroniclly Geriatric it's Republicans as it time for the older people to go play shuffleboard in Florida
Retiring is dying.. After you've established yourself and has success, you are free to be more altruistic in your actions and fight for your grandchildren rather than to eat today. Notice I didn't say after living and working in government for decades. I actually feel older people are an asset in leading, but career politicians are a leach to society. We were supposed to be represented by business men, doctors, scientists, farmers.. etc. People with life experience who would then go back home and live under the policies that they passed, or take up politics after they had finished doing what they needed to do and were there to create a legacy and a better future.

As you lived in Spain a lot you should know that in every country in the EU we have multiple parties in the parliament, never just two and we vote for the party not for some leader, that’s even more important in the counties that you can consider successful, Denmark, Germany, Finland, etc. and the election campaign is very short, a few weeks at max. They are talking about the programs mostly. It’s very bad politics when it comes to attack each other like these two. Not to mention that amount of money they spend on the election… that’s just insane. It could be considered bringing. Here the party can get an amount of money for campaign depends on size, not even possible to get funds over it. The prime minister is elected from the most successful party via the parliament. Period. Still there are multiple parties in play to achieve goals. (Block them.) And a person like Trump who literally used the billionaire white man card to avoid jail? It’s not an option here. Only the most corrupt people would see him as a candidate. That’s not a question of age. A year long slender in media is not election campaigning it’s the Kardashian’s from tax payers money. It's 35 for a President, 30 for a Senator and 25 for a Representative. Frankly, I don't want anyone too young because they are young and inexperience and that is not always a good thing. Especially when it comes to running a country.
