They separated at the train station but were to meet up in Paris, Jean had to sell her business and home. They were sad for the separation and not because they would not see each other again. The son comes back to describe his life to his father and try and reconnect with him. The son lived with both women, his mother and Jean. It was not a sad ending just a sad separation.
That's the book's ending, I think, but not the movie's.

@@cecilianall3983 They are different, though. The book has a happy ending with Jean, Lydia, and Charlie making it work living together. The movie changed it so they never reunite after the parting at the train station. Even the book's author, Fiona Shaw, is publicly frustrated about it with her article 'My book Tell It To The Bees was made into a film, but they changed the ending for a straight audience'. If you had really read the whole book, and watched the whole movie, there is no way you could not know that they are different. Just Google Fiona Shaw tell it to the bees ending, and her article will be one of the first search results to pop up.

Yo. It really really hurts bc Jean did what she had to do. The people need her and Lydia needed her freedom. She just kept the pain for herself at that moment. She wants their last memory together be of love and not sadness and goodbye. I fucking love this movie

I swear the ending left me as frustrated as Titanic. But I really get it-this is supposed to be a sad movie. The film was absolutely phenomenal and it’s one of my favorites.

The last scene at the train station reminds me of a famous Chinese saying “从前的时光很慢，一生只够爱一个人”, means in the previous days, time is slow. It’s only enough to love one person for the whole life. True love is so precious and holy in the fast-paced society today. Wish all of us could meet the significant other and treat them good. Nice clip gonna watch it
It's a beautiful movie but in the future I want to see lesbian movies with a happy ending #LGBTFansDeserveBetter
Should watch Gentleman Jack. It is a series but does have a happy ending and is so well done. The acting is incredible and based on a true story.

Sometimes when you love someone so much the best thing to do is to let them go... I understand that feeling. I dated this beautiful woman who at the time had a 3 year old daughter. We fell in love and everything about us was perfect. But I had a dark past and she had a very sheltered upbringing. She was a good girl. Went to school to become a pharmacist and was an amazing mother. Me I was working as a nurses assistant but was troubled by my inner demons and had started getting into drugs extremely heavy and new that I was going under but didn't want help at the time. I didn't know any better . I had a rough upbringing of abuse and endured sexual trauma and all of that started to surface as soon as I felt real happiness. Her and her child they were so innocent and I didn't want to drag them through my self destruction. I loved her and her daughter whole hearted and because of that I had to leave. It hurt of course but it's been about 10 yrs now and shes one of my best friends. She's thanked me for being selfless and understands why I left. My heart still yearns for her and she's still the most beautiful woman iv ever laid my eyes on.....

I like this movie so much. I love the light and intense moments in this film, love the concept of it-how it's done, the chemistry between Jean and Lydia. the ending is not too bad but I would rather see them being together eventually, and I'd like to conclude or imagine that after finishing the film. It's just one only thing that i think that it wasn't done enough, it's the main reason why jean and lydia fall in love to each other gradually, or I assumed they just have that feelings for each other. Except that, the film is so so good. maybe just after the handmaiden. and thank you for making this video, including all my favourite scenes and also very emotional music

When Marijane Meaker (Patricia Highsmith's Ex Girlfriend The Price Of Salt/Carol) became a successful writer as Vin Packer (Spring Fire) her two main characters Leda and Susan "Mitch" Mitchell couldn't have a happy ending. The Publishing House she worked for Gold Medal Press was very insistent saying that the Book wouldn't be published if the Ladies had a happy ending. The "Original" Lesbian Pulp Fiction Movement that was from 1948-1963 had so many Books but most never got their happily ever after with the exception of Ann Bannon's Books.
