THIS IS A FAN VIDEO THAT CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR PORTRAIT OF A LADY ON FIRE. IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN THE MOVIE AND DON’T WANT TO BE SPOILED DO NOT WATCH THE VIDEO. THANK YOU!
why is "you dreamt of me?" "no. I thought of you." the most romantic dialogue I have ever witnessed in the history of cinema?? an absolute masterpiece of a film.
@@ullah6527 I don’t disagree that dreams are intense, but I think there is something romantic and intentional about the idea of Heloise consciously thinking about Marianne vs. Heloise happening to dream about her, or the idea of her.
August Breeze I think that it’s interesting that Celine Sciamma says there are two ways of interpreting how Marianne answers Heloise when asked if she wants Heloise to resist. Right before Marianne says no, Heloise asks her to respond, and then Marianne says no. So is she saying no, she doesn’t want her to resist, or no, she doesn’t want to answer? I think Heloise has long accepted her fate and knows that true freedom of choice will never be hers. Marianne, on the other hand, has not come to terms with the hopelessness of their situation and is hoping for something to change the course of their love affair, and she puts it all on Heloise. Marianne knows that Heloise has no choice, but is still hoping beyond hope that they have a future, and I think deep down inside she blames her for the situation they are in, and that’s what Heloise calls her out on, when she asks her if Marianne believes that she’s weak, that she’s complicit in dooming their relationship. Marianne is asking her to make a choice when in reality there is no choice to be made. Heloise says “You prefer me to resist.” Marianne says yes. Then Heloise say, “Are you asking me to? Tell me!” I think Marianne wanted Heloise, of her own accord, to choose to resist, and not do it because she was asked. That’s why Marianne says no. She wanted Heloise to make that choice, but for Heloise that choice does not exist in her reality, and she is angry that Marianne does not understand that. Heloise leaves, Marianne finds out her mom returns tomorrow, and faced with running out of time, Marianne runs after Heloise seeking forgiveness for putting the future of their relationship on her shoulders, and accepts that it is out of their hands. Marianne lets herself feel the full force of their fate, and that scene of them sobbing on the beach murders me every time.
"Do all lovers feel like they're inventing something?" When I tell you my jaw DROPPED. Such a beautiful line. And the bonfire? I watched that scene over and over and over. I LOVE it. This movie is a masterpiece
Well Not sure how to describe this film. I had heard the pace is painstaking. I agree, in the best possible way. This is a film that demands we enter in fully. A film that demands our full attention. The female gaze is used to perfection. In my opinion it should have been submitted to the Oscars for Best picture.
I disagree 'the pace is not painstaking', it is set in another error without modern distractions from life, TV's, radio, phones. People talked, communicated, people's lives were very different and had a different intensity. You are looking at this film too much from a modern eye, it's pace makes it work
What shocked me was there was no explicit sex scenes. I though it was gonna be like blue is the warmest color! Nice touch that we would focus on the gaze and not objectify both women as a fetish 😮

I'm an adult woman and Noemie's eyes struck me way more than it's socially acceptable. Marianne's gaze is so warm, but at the same time seems so distant, like a whole universe is happening inside her. When I look at her eyes I feel like I'm looking at a unique sun, that warms my whole body up, but doesn't blind me. So vulnerable, I can't believe it survives out there on its own, but I prey it stays that way. And when she looks down, is like many beautiful clouds of different colours and shapes are interposing between me and her sun, and I just want that sun's warmth back, but at the same time, the aesthetic of it is such a splendid pleasure. And then she looks up again... ...So yeah, fuck socially acceptable. PS: Footmatic, this video is amazing.
This movie was painful to watch for me at first because I just remembered the same situation with Marriane, I had to leave and give up our relationship for the sake of my partner's status and she scared of her family and judgements! We were lovers for 3 months, we've been friends and business partners at first, but you know when it's hurting you mentally you have to make a choice and I decided to leave for her to get reconciled with her ex-husband. I don't know what happened to her until now, it's been two years, but I knew deep inside that I made the right decision. Though I'm still single but I'm happy. So this movie taught me that even if you're not together, deep in our hearts, we're part of each others lives. Thank you for this beautiful video. 💖
I can’t breath when I think about this movie. It’s been a year and I still feel afraid to watch it again, not wanting to disturb the perfection of that moment when I saw it for the first time.
This movie definitely makes it to my top 3, for how effortlessly it wreaks havoc in my heart. I cried an entire night after watching this movie. And I find myself in tears again after those 6:33 minutes. The world was never fair, never equal, never kind. But sure does gives me hope for a better today, to fight the world for the one we love. Only if I had someone. 🖤
This movies is an art masterpiece of 21 century. There is your brain before watching it and then there is your brain after you have watched this. Such profound yearning and love...
It’s been 4 years and I’m still moved by this film. Layer upon layer. Clever, Clever Celine. If you haven’t listened to Celine’s interviews, I recommend you do. I’ve followed Adele’s career since Water Lilies (Celine Sciamma) in 2007. She is a once in a generation talent at her craft. Noemie was the perfect choice.
I have watched this movie a number of times and it is the most beautiful movie I think I have seen. The time it took for them to feel the love for each other was a beautiful waltz and it was possible to feel being scared with them. Yes a beautiful movie.
if i've ever had stendhal syndrome, it has been watching this film... i couldn't stop crying because of all the beauty during the last fifteen minutes of film and after
From now on it'll be very hard for any movie to come close to the in intimacy, the love, the affection, the sexuality of this movie. I'm not sure if I'll be ever able to mourn over any movie ending since this one was the best.
I have already seen the movie three times in a week. Every time i get more emotional!!! It really strikes me with so intense feelings.I think it's probably the best movie i have ever seen!
I just saw this movie in the theater last night (Feb 25th) and my GOODNESS GRACIOUS! No words can describe the feeling you'll feel while watching this masterpiece. The title of this clip really fits the narrative of the story 'til the end, which was also the reason it caught my attention and choose yours among the many other montages that youtube is feeding me. For many months, I willed myself not to click a single montage of this movie in order not to spoil it. That ends today and yours was my first choice, and I was NOT disappointed! You absolutely captured the essence for their relationship, I was blown away by your creativity and when I finished, I was curious to know who made such an amazing clip and to pay homage. VOILA! I was not surprised to see your name. THANK YOU for this awe-inspiring work of art! P.S. Do remember that your videos will help someone's day less painful from this crazy cruel world of ours. Take Care -
It's so hard to stand out sometimes, and I want to thank you for clicking on mine first! I am a sucker for angst and tension and when ever they looked at each other so longingly it had me tied up in knots, and I really wanted to focus on that delicious slow burn. I was worried that 6 minutes was too long for a fan vid, I tend to keep them at a max 4 min, but I wanted to tell their story properly and capture that same feeling of longing, of stretching out the emotions of the movie so that from beginning to end you never stop feeling. Thank you again for the lovely comment!
Sceneggiatura perfetta, interpretazioni di Adele e Noemie assolutamenye da oscar. Grazie per le emozioni, i sentimenti che avete saputo donare a noi tutti.
There are a few films that you see in your life, that you think aren't just a series of images, but are truly a work of art up there with any of the great masters. For me Apocalypse Now and Crouching Tiger are two and no this this masterpiece. One of the most beautiful films I've ever seen.
This is the best love story of all time! And I am glad you added the interaction where Heloise tells Marianne that she sees her too. That is my favorite part!!
You just created the best edit i've ever seen about portrait de la jeune fille en feu, you have managed to bring out all the emotions that one can feel while watching this masterpiece. thanks a lot
This is one of the best les movies I have seen . That’s why I prefer the European movies because they use a very high quality background music and very natural look the story has a very innocent and pure love .The movie it self is an art
This is the best edit I've seen. And I've seen a lot. The most heart stiring. I actually cried watching this one, the edits I haven't. The music is powerful too.
I have seen the movie and now have it on DVD in America I have watched it several times and all the posting video clips I can find. love it and your video is very well done. thanks for your artwork.
It’s good that I can choose not to put subtitles on for the vid bc I found myself able to be more focused on the visuals, and it gave me a new experience that I didn’t think I needed before! (It didn’t matter that I don’t understand what they were saying cuz I watched it so many times I memorised it already lmao)
Ashley CHAU The movie is definitely a visual feast and I wish I had paid attention in French class in high school so didn’t have to rely on captions, lol. Everything, from the way it was shot to the way the two actresses look at each other is so sumptuous and so full of emotion and ugh, this movie has ruined me. Thanks for watching!
I felt Heloise wanted to be on the painting. It was her only way to update Marianne about her current life. How she had manage her life and has a child now and how she still remembers. p.28. The part when she asks when it's time to stop and Marianne's answer kills me..
Yes, I've been sitting on this song for a while waiting for the perfect source to make a video. It hit all the right emotions for me when I think about Portrait. Thanks for watching!
Both your Portrait edits are breathtaking! This movie holds such an important place in my heart that I can't really begin to explain... anyone else feel like this movie changed your life??
I feel like this movie is a rare example of a lesbian movie done right. It’s gorgeous to look at but also intellectually stimulating on a level that exceeds most movies I’ve seen. The way it engages your mind to find parallels and symbolism and meaning in everything really just takes my breath away. It really does have the power to change lives, because media has to the power to shape perceptions and define was it means to be a lesbian, in the way we interact, in the way we love, and in the way we interface with the world. Would I have loved a happier ending? Yes, but I also think our experiences, good or bad, shape how we approach life, and the people who affect our lives the most make the greatest impact. There’s so much beauty in memories; a broken heart is an open heart and this movie shows the transformative nature of love. It forces you to live in the moment, because we all know what’s waiting on the other side.
This movie is heartbreaking to me and your edit caught my attention. I remeber hearing of this movie in passing and somehow ignored it among the chaos of my life. But I paid HULU to only finally watch this last night and it was a dagger to my heart and soul of what I was reminded of. But this response captures why you edit this the way you did and it impacted me immensely. Thank you..❤
absolutely stunning and captivating and powerful, I can not wait to see more videos from this masterpiece of a movie. thank you foomatic, your style of making these videos always make me cry and go through the feels in the most beautiful way. thanks you're exceptional!
Thank you! This film is so many things to me and I am shit and drawing and writing so the only way I can express my love is through vidding. One of my favorite aspects of the film is how it shifts from Marriane observing Heloise to Heloise observing Marriane and how their mutual attraction grows. So many layers to this film and it makes me appreciate it more. Thanks for checking out the vid and leaving a lovely comment!
Another masterpiece, Foomatic! As someone else mentioned, I am also glad you chose not to include the subtitles as this montage is all about the emotions, looks and body language. Brilliant edit. Great music choice. Really lovely!!!
Netgyrl I really was hesitant to edit this, because to vid it meant adding music and it was such a profound choice to not have music in this movie that I didn’t want to spoil that. I wanted something minimal but that also took those emotions of the movie and really harnessed those feelings of discovery, of hope, of love and of loss and let them soar. Nothing I chose seemed to fit right and I remembered I had been sitting on this song for a very long time, and that simple melody just captured everything I felt about this movie. Thanks for watching!
This is the most beautiful montage of scenes from the film I have come across on RUclips. Bravo! The scenes are juxtaposed beautifully and the background tune fits perfectly, bringing out the yearning! Excellent work!
Portrait of a Lady on fire and Call Me by Your Name are the only movies in my life that have left me with a feeling of greif, void, and existentialism. They're both amazing movies in their own ways, and i find it so hard to re-watch, or watch fan content of them both because of that weird existential sad feeling. I don't know what that feeling is called, but these two movies just have me feeling something. It hurts a lot, but i love these two movies so much. They're the only movies that changed something about me. Perhaps it's cause i long for something they have, who knows? This feeling is confusing for me, and i wanted to share it because i wanna see if anyone else feels this way,,.
Thier love is out there. Bc I was left with such grief and void and existential sadness bc of discovering THAT love…We will no longer see each other. Hope you get to hold onto yours when you do
I will admit I had to sit with it and think about what I had seen in order to process its full impact but in the end it is a worthy and thoughtful and breath taking piece of cinema. Thank you for watching and commenting!
@@foomatic21 it doesn't really leave right away, does it? I wish I had your skills. I'd love to do one of these videos to one of Bach's partida's for violin.
Movies like this sink into my bones and I get a kind of catharsis once I vid it and get it out of my system, lol. I’ve been sitting on that song for ages and felt that it matched the intensity of the film and ebbed and flowed like the actor’s performances. It’s never too late to try to make a vid! I say go for it.
The film...the love...the longing...tremendous. But i would have been upset had I seen this before I saw the film. The museum scene spoke volumes...it validated their time together like nothing else could have. Was amazing to experience it in the film. This would have ruined the moment.. Spoiler Alert would be nice to state in the title. Aside from that, this film clip was beautifully put together/edited.
Thanks for watching! Fan videos by nature are just one big spoiler for the movie, as they are truncated versions of what you see on the screen. Anytime you click on one you will inevitability be spoiled if you’ve never seen the source.
I’ll remember every glance, every brush of finger tips floating by in a crowded, every moment of fluttering butterflies, every secret stolen scent of your skin is imprinted in my core. I’ll remember everything 🌹🥀🌹
OMG this gives me so many feels... and love the music and your editing. I once thought no one can make a fan vid that would deserve the movie but you changed my mind. BTW I live super close to Kabuki. I would have watched the movie three times a week with my AMC pass! So sad I was stuck in Toronto but still managed to watch it several times here. Just cannot stop thinking about it
That’s such high praise, thank you!! I’m tickled that two people from the bay have found and commented on this vid, lol. Putting music on this movie when there was a specific choice not to use music felt like I was commiting a crime, so I thought long and hard about the music I wanted to use and needed to make sure it conveyed everything I felt about the movie.
@@foomatic21 totally understand what you mean here and that's why I believed fan vid for this movie might not be a good idea. But this piece you got here feels just right. I doubt any song with lyrics would do justice tho. And after all, bay area is very gay lol
What an incredible masterpiece. So mesmerizing every shot is so hypnotizing. I don't know if i should watch it again seeing as the first time was such an emotional experience. Did you all watch it more than once?
I honestly don't know which one of your Portrait fan vids is my favorite. Bravo, well done!! I just watched the film yesterday. Gosh, was it so wonderful, so poignant...a visual feast. But damn was it so triggering as well XD, because it reminded me of my past love. I thought I've already gotten over her. I guess we as artists/creatives we feel our emotions so deeply; we're such hopeless romantics. Or maybe I'm only speaking for myself. Anyway, I just thought I needed to get that out of my chest. Thank you.
"Not everything is fleeting. Some feelings are deep." - Heloise. Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment! I don't normally find myself making a bunch of fan vids of one movie, but this film is so rich with so many different themes and it taps into that part of me that is just hopeless romantic and a sucker for lesbian love stories. I normally scoff at endings like this but the way Celine, Adele, and Noemie speak so passionately, eloquently and intelligently about the film really just moved me and opened my eyes to the way that art and memory and love tranform us and our experiences.
@@foomatic21 Of course, and it's a pleasure! Creating takes a lot of time and effort, and your vids are wonderfully crafted so I wanted to express my gratitude. And I agree - as a gay girl I admit that seeing LGBTQ stories especially of women who love women who don't end up together or die, is very tiring and saddening. Yet POALOF is different, and special. I'm also in awe of the director and the actresses, the entire team how they're able to still keep on giving post-production. And last but not least - the concept of memory was something I detested for a long time, until this film brought up a different perspective of it. And now here we have a dialogue amongst ourselves and connect thanks to it!
Damn this movie really needs to be watched in the highest resolution possible. I've seen this movie in a theatre and I have the movie downloaded with shitty quality and I don't think I can go back to it after seeing this. I've preordered the dvd and I'm certainly getting the criterion blu ray when it comes out. Thank you for this awesome edit, it made me tear up
I had to upscale this to 4k because I have a lot of issues with the quality of 1080p videos on RUclips. And I didn’t want to post this video if it was going to look like crap. Been meaning to catch it one more time on the big screen before I have to resign myself to buying the bluray when it comes out in June. Thanks for watching and I’m glad you enjoyed the vid!
@@foomatic21 Icic, no wonder the quality is so good. Now I need to find that version online too lol. But I'm still buying the blu ray when it comes out cuz I want to support this awesome movie.
This was a worthy summary of the movie! I liked the music you used in it as wall, all though I like how the music in the movie itself comes forth naturally (playing the piano thing and the chanting women) Good work!
One of the best films I’ve ever seen, period. Denied an Oscar nom and ballon d'or for Best Picture was a crime. Blue is the Warmest Colour receiving the ballon d'or years prior was a crime against humanity and all of lesbian kind.

I have watched this movie a number of times and it is the most beautiful movie I think I have seen. The time it took for them to feel the love for each other was a beautiful waltz and it was possible to feel being scared with them. Yes a beautiful movie.

this movie, this music makes just cry,...what a powerful fan made piece!
From now on it'll be very hard for any movie to come close to the in intimacy, the love, the affection, the sexuality of this movie.
I'm not sure if I'll be ever able to mourn over any movie ending since this one was the best.

Ugh I died in a good way. So heartbreaking but beautiful.
I’ve died so many times thinking of this movie. Thanks for watching.

There are a few films that you see in your life, that you think aren't just a series of images, but are truly a work of art up there with any of the great masters. For me Apocalypse Now and Crouching Tiger are two and no this this masterpiece. One of the most beautiful films I've ever seen.
I think that I can unequivocally say that Portrait is my favorite movie of all time. Thanks for watching and commenting!
i'm deeply crying 😥😪😪mostly for the final, it's the BEST movie ever
This is the best love story of all time! And I am glad you added the interaction where Heloise tells Marianne that she sees her too. That is my favorite part!!

Your cuts! I love seeing your thought process. I have returned to this video many times over the years. And your music selection. Beautiful.

I love the layers and the symbolism in this movie, especially the line you mention. Simple words but so many meanings 😭😭😭😭. Thanks for watching!
At one point, we stop. #Marianne

Both your Portrait edits are breathtaking! This movie holds such an important place in my heart that I can't really begin to explain... anyone else feel like this movie changed your life??
No but it should change cinema on both sides of the Atlantic. Lesbian films should not be made by straight people. Support gay female artists instead.

I've seen the movie twice in three days in the theater and here I am overjoyed there's a new fanvid on youtube. Thanks for sharing your talent.

@@foomatic21 it doesn't really leave right away, does it? I wish I had your skills. I'd love to do one of these videos to one of Bach's partida's for violin.
Movies like this sink into my bones and I get a kind of catharsis once I vid it and get it out of my system, lol.

And now here we have a dialogue amongst ourselves and connect thanks to it!
buenisima historia aunque final es muy triste

Been meaning to catch it one more time on the big screen before I have to resign myself to buying the bluray when it comes out in June. Thanks for watching and I’m glad you enjoyed the vid!
@@foomatic21 Oh I thought these were taken from the blu ray because of the quality. How did you get these clips at such high quality?
