Hey, you can disable auto sleep on the keychrom! I had the same problem and it went away after toggling it. : )
Haha, I love it. I was checking the comments for that very question! That's wicked fast, props to you!
Just realized you actually made a typo in the description, it says MX Master 4 for mac in the description
what's your wpm?
Hi mayuko why you look old now
I can say right now that sticking with pre-built mechanical keyboards is an excellent financial decision
Come to the darkside, we have no money in our wallets but excellent clacks and thocks
Well said
@@kylemckell" must have the shiny click clacks planks"
You can get a decent mechanical keyboard for $20-$30.
No. Build your own. Sell your soul.
The ultimate programmer keyboard would just have 2 macro keys, CTRL+C, CTRL+V
adding CTRL+A macro key into the keyboard is also a good idea

Mayuko and her great videos just make my day
Finding a good keyboard or keyboard that works for you is like finding a good lover. It's a tedious process. But after many tries, you eventually end up with one which you will love, and that's so rewarding with every press you make. After becoming a keyboard supplier for my whole family I want to point out that your lover doesn't have to be the most expensive one or the shiniest one. In general key feedback, keycaps' shape, and layout matters the most.
Been waiting for this one! I ended up switching to the MX Keys on my gaming desktop, away from several mechanical keyboards with various switches (red, blue, brown). I realized that I just really preferred the typing experience on my MacBook Pro (the 2020 13" with scissor keys, not the butterfly ones), and the MX Keys seemed like the closest alternative. I just can't seem to type as fast or accurately on a mechanical keyboard - too much travel.
what was wonderful is how naturally the script flowed, never felt engineered (read off putting) very smartly done
Just appreciating a good review on keyboards. Actually looking for a new one thank you for the review !
I appreciate this content from a programmer without a massive ego and having to tell everyone how much money they have earned. 👍
Coming from mechanical keyboards for years already, I finally decided to go chiclet esp after seeing your first desk tour. I cannot stressed how thankful I am after you showcasing the MX Keys (thanks truly, Mayuko~). It's my current fave now and all of my mech keebs are simply on display. I just prefer this keeb to all of my collections. My only wished is that hopefully they released a TKL version of it :)
Logitech just released a TKL version of it. Check it out.
60% mech keyboards are the best IMO 🔥 using Anne Pro 2 now with Gateron reds and loving it ❤️ great review Mayuko, it's interesting to see you using all those very different kinds of keyboards!
I just got this one!! Do have any recommended programing layouts?
@@JesusPonce Nr 1: replace caps lock with ' (apostrophe) - useful when creating strings or formatting within slack or GitHub to get the code look. I also make WSAD work as arrow keys when Fn2 is pressed and set the bottom right four keys to work as arrows but only on a single tap. And not coding related but I set a whole bunch of shortcuts when Fn2 is pressed to control audio, brightness etc :)
@@KaroCodes Thank you so much!! I will change them :)
@@JesusPonce I'm not a programmer, but a friend of mine enjoys coding and likes the RK68 so far. It's a 65% which means it still has the tilde key and arrow keys, so that might be a good pick for you. In general a 65% layout I think is the smallest I'd personally go if coding.
I'm glad this popped up, I really need a new keyboard asap!
Fun fact: You can turn off the auto sleep on the Keychron! Personally I turn it off too since reconnecting is pretty annoying :D
Same thing! I thought I could live with the auto sleep on for the sake of longer battery life but I gave up after a week or less. The battery life without the auto sleep option has been surprisingly good, though, so I have no complains now.
@Diyotama I'd say 3 days with backlight only on at night. If I remember to turn off the keyboard when I sleep I can get 5 days. That's just an estimate based on a non-reliable memory of mine though :D
@Diyotama I do turn mine off every night before going to bed. I also tend to use very subtle patterns/off for the backlight (mine is non-RGB btw; RGB isn't my taste) and I can get over a week. I would say I use the keyboard ~11hrs/day.
@Diyotama Forgot to mention. To cope with the broken on/off switch, you can just switch on the auto-sleep mode every night or something like that. I don't know if it's worth the effort to you, but totally for me.
@@timnguyen1998 Yo, are you the actual tik tok guy?
You can hold fn+S+O for a few seconds to disable the auto sleep functionality of the Keychron
for some reason K860 sound check reminds me of the calming sound of rain against a window; had to repeat that section a few times :)
Yesss also got the Keychron K2 keyboard, love it!!
Great vid! I own a Keychron K6, and at least on mine, you can turn off that sleep mode and it makes the experience a ton better. The battery's big enough to neutralize the trade off of continuous power being used.
Thanks for honest reviews from the perspective of someone who has one foot in the mechanical keyboard world. I had my concerns as well when I was trying to look for something that would suit my needs and environment. I ended up with the Filco Majestouch Ninja TKL in blues switches and then Leopold FC980C Topre 45g switches. Both are opposite extremes for me. I got both to suit two different environments. I used the Leopold for work where sound is an issue and the Filco for home where I can be as clickety clacky as much as I want.
I too didn't want to go into the mechanical keyboard world too much as well cause I would end up selling everything else, lol.
I really love your videos mayuko, please make more 😁✌️
Omg! Just yesterday I was looking around for good mechanical keyboards! Thanks for this!
"my coworkers thought I was flexing my typing speed"
- yeah that can be an issue
or the noisy clicking is just annoying, get a silent keyboard and their attitude might change.
Sadly, the keyboard is the last thing holding me back in my coding speed.
Literally just bought the Logitech MX combo for programming and then saw this video pop up on my recommendations. Happy I made the choice.
that keychron's colors are on point. thanks for sharing! 👏
Thank you for making this video. I'm setting up my home office and this was tremendously helpful.
Great review!
I really hate it when I’m in the office and hear somebody typing on a mechanical keyboard all day everyday let alone zoom calls or meetings
Yes, love the Logitech MX Master, I have the whole set: both keyboard and the mouse.
Just the kind of video I needed, thank you so much!
You mentioned that you prefer the Mac version of the MX Keys because it has way more functionality. What additional features does it have other than the key layout and aesthetics? Thanks!
Mayuko with the timely video for Valentines day
Hey mayuko! I was inspired by your ergonomic video to get a split keyboard but couldn't help but notice there was only one split keyboard listed in this video. After researching, I decided to go with Dygma Raise and I love it! Have you heard of it? It seems like they are a smaller/newer company. The keyboard is feature rich with a fairly minimal learning curve. It is wired and RGB backlit which I know you aren't into. However, the RBG isn't just for aesthetic and actually serves a function which I appreciate as an engineer.
Very cool video. Have been looking at finding alternative for my current logitech.
mayuko ur hair looks so good
Man, that split gaming keyboard is just crazy. lol Awesome video! I'm a proud Keychron K4 V2 user but I'm slowly drifting into the pit of the keeb community and mechanical keyboards.
"Rainbow Keyboards are just not my vibe"
pc master race has left the chat
Many people that have rgb don't even like rgb. The manufacturers are just force-feeding it and convincing themselves it increases sales.
@@vibonacci yeah but I'm talking about the "PC master race"
@@vibonacci that’s not true almost every laptop and keyboard with RGB is able to be turned of or switched to white for standard Back-Lit
The reason I can't program well is my brain, not my keyboard.
But it does impact the pleasure of coding
I love your channel. With working from home and less social interaction at work, we need more people with your attitude and energy. Keep up your. good work!
I was only 20 seconds into this video before I subbed, you have a great personality!
68% is my fave kb layout. Just as long as I have arrow keys and numbers, I'm good.
programming without numbers is bad
Been waiting for this video, I need a new keyboard
I recently got the GMMK TKL, I have arthritis and my membrane logitech was getting painful to use specially in the mornings, since my problem was typing the key and not hand posture I tried going for a standard mech instead of ergo.
I also knew clicky swtiches weren't my thing thanks to my SO keyboard but I still wasn't sure to go with linear or tactile. That's why I chose a hotswappable keyboard, so I can switch the switches if needed. For now I went with red gaterons and I'm pretty happy, morning typing pain is nearly gone since they are really smooth and they are silent enough I wouldn't be affraid to use it in the office or while I'm sharing home office with my SO.
I went TKL since I wanted to have my hands nearer that with a numpad in the right and didn't want to depend on layers since on flare ups I can't keep keys pressed for too long. And I chose GMMK because I wanted it to be ISO. I also bought Glorious Keycaps because they have ISO-ES layout available and it's a pain finding it elsewhere.
I'm not a RGB lover, so I configured the still backlight at minimum brightness in white for easier legend reading.
As Mayuko I slightly dipped my toes in the MK rabbit hole for investigation but tried not going further because I have enough expensive hobbies in my life xD
Did you find the GMMK helped with your typing pain or no?
Thanks for the expertise Mayuko!😊 Any chance you'll do the same with mouses and the Magic Trackpad? Much love💙
Woo new year, New keyboard!
Can u recommend flutter(dart) as software engineers?? I am intrested in your thoughts
Long time no see,Mayuko.nice keyboard
I've also been using a Keychron K2 for about a year - I love it. Bluetooth is definitely kind of unreliable so I mostly use it wired - it's also really easy to swap out the keycaps for Windows layout.
Been using the K8 and the Bluetooth has been rock solid. I think the updated BT5.0 chipset might have fixed the reliability issues and is super fast to switch between devices (compared to my Anne Pro 2)
I’m using K2 (version 2) with my MacBook Pro (2019) and iPad Pro, and BT connectivity has been solid after turning off the auto-sleep function. The one thing I need to remember now is to turn off my keyboard so it doesn’t drain over night 😉
I just got a Keychron K4, and I really appreciate that the stabilizers are inbuilt into the frame so you don't accidentally damage it when pulling out the larger keycaps like the spacebar! So far it's been pretty fast switching between devices like my Surface and my phone, so it doesn't bother me that much :)
Yes I appreciate your keyboard and want to replay this portion again and again
Software Engineer for 20 years here. I find switching keyboards every few months helps me manage any pain. My theory is it "works out" different areas of your hands. My favorite mouse is the Kensington Orbit Trackball with Scroll Ring. So much better than a regular mouse or a trackpad, especially when dealing with dual ultrawide screens.
You don't realize how cringy your first sentence is
@@lodano413 What?
Lift weights and train your forearms too. You shouldn't feel any pain at all
does that mean you also have to learn new layout every time? And have you tried the rk61? Some have said it isn't great for coding and I just bought it :/
@@lodano413 it's context for the advice lol nothing wrong with stating your experience.
Thank you so much!!! ❤️
Awesome video !
Hi Mayuko,
Does missing F-keys hinders programming using Keychron or other keyboard? As for default most IDEs using like F5-F9 for debugging purposes
I'm with you on the RGB thing, I feel like I grew out of that about a decade ago. I also roll with the Logitech MX Keys and MX Master, but I do miss my old mechanical KB. That said, I used to get lots of complaints in meetings with the clickity clack.
For me, it got me through many late nights of programming and cyber work, so RGB ultimately comes down to personal preference.
Yep! Welcome to the Mechanical Keyboard World!
You summed up exactly my thoughts regarding mechanical keyboards during your Kechron review. I know if I go further I will just fall into the rabbit hole and spend an amazing amount of money and time 😅 Great video btw. I love the way you talk about this all.
Aaaah, the soothing blizzard of MX Blue switches.
In my experience the bluetooth on the mx keys is just as laggy and terrible as the Apple keyboard but pretty solid using the unifying receiver. The mouse is tempting but the clicks sound so loud compared to the M590 I'm currently using. Do the loud clicks bother you?
Amazing Video @mayuko
If you haven't tried the tent kit for the Kinesis, you should--it feels really nice.
I have the same base model with the brown switches and it was also too loud for an office environment--and was even getting picked up on calls at home until I put silicone rings on the key caps. Since then, no issues--but then I haven't been back to the office with it.
Regardless, if anyone is considering the Freestyle Edge: Get the tent kit. I tried not using it initially, and it's just so much better with it on. Yes, it's a bit of a mess on the desktop, but the utility and comfort is tough to beat. Use silicone rings if noise is a concern; I like the way they sound and feel, YMMV.
Love the Keychrons. I'm using the Keychron K6 which is really similar to the K2 but without the F-keys. After going to sleep mode, it wakes up and connects almost instantly. I guess they improved upon it.
Thank Mayuko for testing those keyboards, how is about Microsoft Sculpt? You used it also, right? how do you like it compared to these keyboards?
Hi what do you think of the Apple's Magic keyboard?
What is the grey cloth/mouse pad? Under the keyboard?
Great video! I think Corsair K100 RGB is also a great choice! Is excellent for gaming and programming!
PFU Happy Hacking Keyboard (US layout) since 1997 - and since 2017 I've been using PFU Happy Hacking Keyboard Professional2 Type-S (US layout). It's like the old DEC VT220, not that hard sound like VT100, but it's still my favorite for many years. I have nothing personal against the latest trends of homebrew or split keyboards, but I like what I like :) (I've heard the HHKB design concept from my M.Eng advisor in 1990 first, actually - and it's amazing that he actualized the product which has been used for so many years! :))
hello! this may be a late comment but I want to know your opinion on Logitech MX keys mini???
Great video!
Had been looking at the Keychron k1 lately cause I've really been wanting a wireless mechanical. Good to know about the Bluetooth. It's not ideal but maybe I can live with it.
Whats your machine? I am using a Mac and I've never had that issue with my Keychron K2V2
As a programmer, do u recommend a 60% keyboard layout?
have you tried Dygma Raise? it's mechanical, split, and not as bulky. it's also hotswap so you can use any kind of switch you want (even buying your own favorite high end mechanical switch)
Can you recommend a tkl keyboard for gaming? Thanks again.
I have k2 Version 2 variant and believe me connecting via Bluetooth and switching between Mac PC and mobile is less than a second job for me.. if you are looking for keychrone I would highly recommend buying or getting version 2 variant. I have hot swappable brown key board which also gives me to change key caps in case necessary.. just a thought and update
I am rocking a K6 with brown switches, love it;
thanks ! great job! What are the red switches like?
Your hair looks lovely. Keep it that way. ;)
hey mayuko, can you please tell us what your mousepad is? it looks so nice, and I want one Q-Q
@mayuko When using the MX keys do I need go have the MX Master 3 mouse or can I use the MX master 2s mouse instead please?
Red switch or brown which I should order? My work is development
The g915 tkl tactile is my absolute favorite keyboard for programming on a Mac. The price is insane but the RGB lighting matches my VS Code theme and animates, so I am at peace.
Well, that was charming and well explained, thanks. I also only like rainbows at the sky
How does the Microsoft sculpt compare to the Logitech ergo in your opinion?
Can I say one thing unrelated to the video? Your hair is amazing!! It looks sooooo good.
I love my Dygma Raise, it's great
Thanks!
Have you seen/tried the ZSA Moonlander? It's a prebuilt similar to the ergo dox ez, but the layout is a bit simpler. It is wired but for a split mechanical it's very minimal and modern looking and with some custom cables I think it can look pretty great on a desk
wait. no mentions on WASD brand steel frame keyboards with custom layout options and any color cherry mx keys?
Thank you for the review. I use Das keyboard. But it feels a little heavy to use
your typing speed was so sick. i wish i can have that speed
7:12 I guess you meant Brown switches?
I’ve been using brown stitches for the same reason but it wasn’t quiet enough for my partner lol and I’m using a silent version of the brown. And wow 140wpm! I’ve been practicing lately and getting at 110 when I’m good.
because its mostly not the switch making the loud noise but the cheap springs kick the keys back in position and the lack of housing for looking more trendy dont help on that more too. :)
I like ergonomics thank ya Mayuko 👍)
That's a lot of information for me to use ctrl C + ctrl V at the end of the day.
Freestyle edge is sick with the lift kit. But another great split mechanical is the Mistel Barocco - which basically is like if you took that Keychron and split it in half.
I got the Kinesis Gaming keyboard and it's the best keyboard I've ever owned.
Sure, it's a medium-sized keyboard, but you can just move them apart to get your desk space if needed. The wire length is also adjustable. All keys are programmable so you can disable the CAPS key, the left macro buttons are easy to use, and it all lives in the keyboard's built-in storage. I always recommend brown keys if you don't know which keys to pick.
5:04 lol fell down that rabbit hole a while back. In the process of building a corne v3 keyboard from scratch and just preordered the KAM superuser keycap set. Ordered all the parts and just got the PCB's back from China. It can be fun I highly recommend opening the "pandoras box" lol
So amazing :)
Just wondering, what size is your desk pad?
Turn off the autosleep? Mine wakes up quite fast. Helps that I have Bluetooth 5 receiver? I'm not sure. but its so much fun
i totally agree with you about the rainbow keys
I use daskeyboards pretty often, the x50q is nice as i have all kinds of macros setup for it for work and get notifications on it for some of my more critical teams rooms, nagios alerts, and email. You can change your LED lightup scheme per key, so i use it to highlight sections to help me remember short cuts depending on the IDE, VIM, etc i use since i'm programming in up to 8 languages a day or debugging deployed software on production servers. Keeps my brain sorted.
I do not believe they officially support mac or linux though, and who programs on a windows machine anymore? lol
hey your keyboard mat is dope! Can you drop a link?
What about the Keychron K3, Version 2, RGB, OPTICAL Brown?
