so glad you're here to get these ideas out, it was an absolute blast working on this ☆
it's probably worth pointing out that the "past three pillars" and "offer up to the" on the bit with the three Shaymin are the words seen in the engravings in Turnback Cave in DPP, and that maybe the "god" in this case is Giratina giving guidance to the player on how to reach it and/or the Distortion World

would make sense, cause in the distortion world, there are flowers, and we have to pass by three of them on that platform were we find garitina in platinum.
so maybe its the human travels a great distance, a god tells the human past the three flowers in a world thats torn/destoryed with a waterfall that rises or from a waterfall that rises.

9:30 - I read it as. "Searching thru this land, space dances with time. God guides us as we travel. Gratitude(we are thankful)."
I see it as a double message,
      1. it's a hint at the upcoming frenzied boss were you have to get pay attention to the distance between you and the boss and time dodges correctly.
      2. This is a continuation of the players story as you find this mural on the second map and are being guide by God via the Acres iPhone. This gives the player hope to maybe return home, hence being thankful.

I suspect that the intended order for these murals might be subject object verb like Japanese. Furthermore, the three Shaymin might mean forest. Take a look at these kanji 木 tree, 林 grove, 森 forest. Or at the very least may be being used to represent a multitude of something.

So, I think a big thing that has been missed in regards to Manaphy - the Prince of the Seas. I think that the Manaphy could be used to represent royalty or at least denote leadership. Especially if Basculegion already exists as a symbol for water or traveling the sea. Darkrai could be more like fear than straight darkness (especially with Giratina being available) and Crescelia could be more like shining given it's multiple dex entries referring to it as such.
The following are my interpretations numbered by video appearance
    3.)
    A shining leader
Travels across the sea facing unknown, fear, and dark dangers
Humans of willpowers arise in the fearful lands
    Traveling across land and sea
    4.)
    A leader of Humans
The grateful people give thanks to god abundantly
The land is torn and a new leader arises
    5.)
A shining man challenges a Pokemon of shadows
Pride and fear fill the land
    The leader slows
    6.)
Pokemon of this place and time are unknown
    The leader is missing
    God rules over the pokemon
    7.)
An ambitious leader of man challenges god
Time slows across the land and sea
    The time of fear grows

      @KestralKuthule 2 года назад +18

I was considering that. Manaphy being prince or leader makes sense given the legend and Cresselia being the crescent and waxing moon could also mean appear, as it seems to simply appear out of nowhere and also matches the first phase of a visible moon.

I was also thinking that Manaphy can represent communication/connection. Due to Heart Swap being its signature move. The 6th one can then be
interpreted as "In a time and place where pokemon are not companions. The unknown connection to Pokemon was revealed by God". This can also be related the ancient aura users as well since the temple was clearly built by human hands

On the first mural, wouldn't "to explore" be a better way to translate the second Ursaluna? • @Kahadi
    @Kahadi 2 года назад +108

While some of the meanings make a lot of sense, some feel a bit too specific compared to others that are more vague, and all together feels more like... Confirmation bias. You have these theories about their meanings, and theories about the games, so by going between the potential meanings of each Pokemon, you're finding a potential translation that seems to prove you right.
While it would make sense that to some degree they are talking about the player character, maybe about Volo... It could also be that these hieroglyphs are just meant as quick retellings of the various Sinnoh myths we know of, as some of them could be taken to mean similar things. Someone cutting down Pokemon, humans and Pokemon living close together, someone expressing gratitude.
All in all, a very interesting theory, but a little too... Convenient

    • @KaiCyreus
      @KaiCyreus 2 года назад +21

indeed, especially the "cuts down Pokémon" one sounds a lot like the Veilstone Myth in the first line, however the rest of it also sounds like a prophecy about Volo as "high above, a dark place draws near" sounds a LOT like the space-time rift, but of course that depends on the interpretation of each symbol and the syntax they're presented in being correct as well

  • @Ryodraco
    @Ryodraco 2 года назад +25

While I do love all the work put into this, shouldn't we let Volo's words help us in interpreting the murals? He tells the player character that the murals focus on the story of the ancient hero who went on a journey and challenged Arceus. Unless he was speaking only of what the hieroglyphics he is showing you right then mean.

    • @theginkgo
      @theginkgo 2 года назад +4

Well, it would be pretty counterproductive for Volo at this part of the game to tell us what the murals actually mean. Meanwhile,
what the Ancient Hero did and what we do in the game (earning the Nobles' trust, collecting the plates) is similar in the first place, so what he says at Deertrack Heights could just be written off as different interpretation rather than him outright lying/purposefully mistranslating.

I think that the Arceus symbol could both mean "god" as in Arceus and "gods" as in a number of gods/a pantheon.
I think the Moonview Arena message says
"Men traveled from across the sea. God(s) tells the men to repeatedly (or thrice) show gratitude or the land will be destroyed by tsunami"
Because Manaphy is specifically sea travel, there being three Shaymins could mean that the gratitude is shown multiple times, and the combination of Kleavor (destroy), Manaphy (sea), and Sneasler (rising) could come out as "destruction by rising sea" which is what a tsunami is.
And I think the Snowpoint Temple message says
"Peace with (the) god(s) in this time and place is unknown. (As if they are(?)) Across a vast and unknowable sea, we are separated from them."
The combination of Manaphy and Heatran could mean something along the lines of "A sea that is vast and what lies beyond/on it is unknown". That part of the message is either a metaphor or they literally believed that the realm of the god(s) is on the other side of an uncrossable body of water. I have the feeling that this message also says why the people built the temple, to make peace with god(s).
I think that the warnings of the future are prophecies said by some kind of oracle. There are literally both psychic humans and Pokemon in the universe, so it's not out of the question.

    • @KaiCyreus
      @KaiCyreus 2 года назад +1

another good idea, you've also made me think that the combination of Manaphy and Heatran - if you take the more popular idea of Heatran representing magma and tumultuous earth - could be a compound word describing natural disasters, which in this case would be acts of divine retribution

I still do not agree 100% with Volo being a time traveler, he sure knows a lot and makes you think that by looking at his plan and how long he's been working on it, but he still went to Cogita to know more about the legends. We can easily tell Cogita is a person with thousands of years, being the one that wrote the Old Verses and the lover of the Legendary Hero "Alder". When she first saw Volo she thought he might have been the one she was waiting for to tell everything she knew to save Hisui, but then when the character You play come to Hisui and Volo tells Cogita about it, she stops to tell stories to him and waits to see You player to help you get the Red Chain. If they are both either time travellers, or much older than they look, he should probably know more and doesn't need to asks Cogita for the legends of the same people they both shares the genes by being the first Sinnoh people. Hopefully what I said makes sense and can get a response.

i'm also not quite on board with him being a time traveler exactly, as there's not much to go on when assuming that he can just somehow travel through time

he's much taller than average, seen in his concept art to be 190cm, and he says he'll conquer Arceus no matter how many decades or centuries it takes.. maybe these ancient Sinnoh people are just built different and live much longer loves naturally

When you come across the first mural, you are told outright that it's about the original hero.
Although, as you progress and befriend the 10 pokemon that were loyal to the original hero, it's meant to instil the feeling that you're basically mirroring the steps taken by the original hero, so it makes sense that the first mural would seem to apply to either of you equally.
Otherwise, there's a lot of good logic applied here, but as others have stated - there's too many instances of characters being used to fit for the sake of convenience.
I reckon they are all relating to the various tales of the region, rather than premonitions. If there were premonitions, why would so many relate to Volo and overlook the other mysterious time travellers in the game? If we include Volo, there's also Ingo, the player and Cogita. (Upon meeting the player, she states that they are the one she's been waiting for. It also implies that she, in some fashion has surpassed the normal life span for a human and will continue to do so. We can't say for sure that she has traversed time, but she has definitely manipulated time in some way - or rather some pokemon has performed this act for her, as is the case for every instance of space/time manipulation in the franchise canon. Since she has knowledge of events that have yet to come, it makes sense that she may have learned of these events further down the timeline and come back to play her role in them.)
In a story where time travel is an established factor, foretelling the future is much less mysterious. Even if they ARE premonitions, who's to say someone from the Legends Arceus story isn't responsible for going back in time and creating these premonitions/murals?

this video is a year old now so i dont know how many people will see this, but i think the interpretation of 13:35 is half-right. i think this is definitely talking about the distortion world, but i think it's about volo specifically.
i see it more as "the human travels, for arceus/god whom he holds overwhelming reverence for, through the destroyed world where waterfalls rise."
if it's accurate, this is probably volo seeking out giratina to tear open the space-time rift in order to get arceus' attention.
and if THAT is true, 11:04 might be pretty similar to what you said, volo's journey TO the distortion world. something like "under the cover of dangerous night, the ambitious human arises to dark/evil places, as he crosses land and sea."

This is fascinating! However, I think the Manaphy symbol might be related to “beginnings” or “birth”; as it is the only legendary that can hatch from an egg. That’s one of the Pokémon’s big gimmicks.
It also makes a lot of sense if you were to replace this Manaphy meaning into the context of various murals. Take the last one before heading to the temple and Spear Pillar: it still makes perfectly coherent sense when swapping “traveled” into “born”.

I think the last one could also be interpreted as “an ambitious human, challenged by God, moves across time traveling across land and sea as dark times grow”. Which could refer to the player or the hero of old who is from another time or said to be from another time and has to help with the dark times the region is coming into. It is told to us in some point in the game that the time space distortion problem have happened once before with the hero of old and now the player so many that is the dark thing that is talked about. And one of the first thing in the game and one of the last things we hear Arceus say is find all of the Pokémon and then come find me, he actually challenge us.

You interpreted Azelf and Regigigas as a "brave human" in the first one, apparently meaning the player or a hero, but later as an "ambitious human," supposedly referring to Volo, there's an obvious lack of continuity. In a lot of pictographic languages and the like, two symbols being seen together often tend to be a group that forms a new word or concept. In the case of Azelf/Regigigas being Hero, you can then use that as a base to interpret the other murals.

I actually think that Basculegion represents vengeance. I deciphered all of these as well and got somewhat different results but I'm certain that Braviary means a fight/battle and Giratina just means Giratina much like Arceus just means Arceus.
Azelf only ever appears alongside Regigigas so I'm certain that it refers to a specific person (Volo). Also, I believe that they're interpreted the way runes are - all together. Order doesn't really matter. When you do rune casting, you read them all as a group. And also, various symbols have various interpretations based on the context of what they are paired with.
I might just make my own vid about what conclusions I came to because I don't want to spam here, but for example I got a WAY different interpretation for 10:40 but the essence is still there.
I read from the bottom up, and it essentially says "traveling with a vengeance/grudge" , then "a strong willed man ascends to a place of darkness" (keep in mind that you must climb cliffs to enter Turnback Cave), then "lying dormant is Giratina, a dark entity with a dangerous grudge" which makes sense given the fact that Giratina lives in this cave. And then the topmost line I interpreted as "a long journey (manaphy) and a dream (creselia)" which I believe highlights Volo and Giratina having a shared dream of vengeance against Arceus. And yes, it is significant that it is found in the Coastlands.
Like how the one in Moonview Arena references the spacetime rift.

I don’t think Volo is a Faller. I think that would undermine one of the central themes in Pokémon: history repeats itself, so it’s in humanity’s best interest to remember and learn from it. It’s more likely that there was someone similar to Volo in the past, just like there is someone similar to Volo in the future (Cyrus). And the Celestica people left these murals to warn against people like that.

TOBY!!! PLEASE SEE THIS!! I actually disagree with your understanding of the inscription in the Snowpoint Temple. You described it as “companionship in this time and place is unknown, an unseen distance separates them from us”. But I think it’s directly talking about the player character and their journey in the Hisui region. The middle line I’m foggy on, but I believe it says something more along the lines of “companionship in this time and place is HIDDEN (not unknown) from an unknown distance; God accompanies us.” So it’s very similar, but the meanings are different. Rather than saying the people of Hisui have been separated from God like I believe you said, it’s rather talking about how Arceus is always with us through our journey via the Arc phone and helps us when it seems it necessary. Thanks for the awesome video Toby, I’ve been wondering this for months!

Lemme try my take on the murals based on what you found out. We don't really know who is talking when reading this so I'll just assume it is mostly third person. I also associated Manaphy as a traveller or a seeker.
    Starting from 17:12
    God searched all over
for a willful person who express gratitude, emotion, and wisdom
to show him a distant world of danger.
Search and discover a world that grows bigger in time
God's land for the people to traverse
    A gift
    Dreaming and seeking
in deep darkness a shadow lurks spelling danger
A dark world arise by the will of a human
    across land and sea
    Human traveller
God tells human to seek three gifts
Before space is cleaved and travellers arise
A willful human seeks to strike God
Pushing through time across land and sea
    Dark times grow
Friendship through time and space is deep
    Even in unseen distances
    God is a friend
Dreaming human cuts ties with shadow (Giratina?)
    Rise above dark place
    Traveller pushes forward
Note: So idk exactly where each of these murals were located even though it was likely mentioned in the video. I'll take my time checking it maybe... But these are my readings without thinking of the order of where they can be found. It's been 1 year already but maybe people might still see my comment.

13:16 - these 3 Shaymins reminded me of something that was a thing in ancient hebrew/arameian I don't remember exactly... anyway the thing is that nowadays we have adjective gradation. We may say "strong", but also "stronger", and "the strongest", but back then (I mean like in Jesus Christ times, some renmants of that can be found for example in original New Testament texts) they didn't exactly have such things in language, but instead they manage to achieve it by repetition. So repeating three times was like making it the highest grade. So 3 shaymin is three times grateful ("grateful , grateful, grateful") meaning "most grateful".
I don't know how this can fit with the suggested meaning, but... What if the mural would mean something more figurative. Water is on of most crucial things to live, it also is often associated with purity or purification and I gues it can also be connected with rebirth, so...
    "Human traveled
to meet god, who said this human to be most grateful,
as the world, that is torn/destroyed will be purified and ris a new"
That may sounds weird an farfetched but with previous mural about shadows, danger and ambitious human... I think it kinda may make some sense.
Also I didn't played Arceus games at all, but I heard a bit and wasn't there a theme about Arceus being somehow corrupted/infested, and we as player character will kinda cure him from that? I mean that maybe suggested another prophecy (for the sake of which let's just put aside that Arceus is far from being worthy of being called a god, and this plot just further confirms that..) like:
    "The human, who travels
will get the greatest gratefullness of god
for purifying him in this torned world and make it* rise anew" (*it can mean both the "god" (Arceus) or this torned world)
That may be somewhat loose interpretation of these hieroglyphs buuut I think it kinda fits in the entire narration. Is a message of hope which really stood out among all these warning, but also they make a context for it.
But I actually hope the theory about time travel is wrong... the time travel hardly ever is done right and usually is just source of logical errors.

Eternatus fell to earth 3000 years ago the same time AZ reawakend Eternatus with his weapons Infinity energy and the same energy made AZ a giant like it does to Pokemon. Infinity energy powers the Mega stones, Z crystals, and Dynamax/Gigantamax and Eternamax depending on how much is absorbed. WE STOPPED THE DARKEST DAY! BUT in another universe they did not! Just like in Ultra sun and moon the Ultra Recon squad is trying to save themselves from becoming the ultra beast due to radiation from the darkest day. The Ultra Beasts are part human and part pokemon/animal after life reformed in the other dimension. Ultabeast are drawn to Alola because of Ultra Necrozmas light just like Ultra Recon squad wants to use its power/light to fix/control their universe so do the Ultabeasts. Light the absence of it and space with play very important role is Scarlet and Violet! UB-01 is a more like a Mew... Human DNA and animal/Pokemon DNA reborn in a different universe/timeline. UB-01 is the ancestor/leader or other Ultrabeast.

HEY TOBY! I hope you see this! I have a theory that I think might be true and give us lil details on Gen 9’s Pokémon Scarlet and Violet! I think Paulo and Tina from Pokémon Masters EX are both from the region that Scarlet and Violet take place. Their names even have Hispanic roots. Not to mention, we don’t know which region they came from to Pasio. ALSO Paulo’s pants are VIOLET color and his friend Tina… SCARLET. From her hair to her clothing. We know Paulo has a Rockruff, maybe the legendary Pokémon for the Violet game is Rock type. Tina’s Pokémon is Flareon which could mean the Scarlet legendary is Fire type. I really hope you see this! There’s so many clues from their names, to their clothing, and the ambiguity of their origins. We know where every trainer is from on Pasio, EXCEPT Paulo and Tina (who recently just arrived to Pasio). I urge you to go through the Paulo’s interlude in the villian arc to see if you spot something I may not have noticed.
