This was one of my favorite ones yet-- The miles and miles of dirt track next to all those creeks and rivers, that camp site at the end, just... *chef's kiss*. Do you fish? There are so many spots in this video that look like they'd be an amazing spot to drop a line in and try and catch your dinner. With how remote you are I bet even a simple tenkara rod would let you catch your limit in no time.

I can fish but it not something I do a lot, I grew up with a mate who could go anywhere and catch the biggest and most fish were everybody else would catch nothing (he has record catches all over the place) so I felt like it wasn't my thing next to him 😂 If I take a rod I then have to take cooking and cleaning gear and I am already over weight with gear, so for these trips it just the exploring.

Blizzards are not fun either. Yes they'd be great for horse back, the track in the previous episode along the river was exclusively for horse back for the first century of its existence. There is another track I might be able to get to that was just for horse called the bridle track, named that as it is a very narrow track and gold miners and settlers had to lead their horses by the bridle back in the 1800's. So I am keen to ride this one.

haha, yes a big difference in temperature. Yes I think the main difference between the to is there is less of that grass and scrub under the tall trees replaced by ferns.

Glad you are enjoying the series mate. Don't tell anyone but I have a KTM EXC-F SIX DAYS, the most fun you can have on two wheels. Different bikes different experiences all are good. It's like surfing, I love riding hollow tubes over shallow reefs in Indonesia but also 1 foot high long point break waves just gliding along. Yes I am greedy I want it all haha.

It's good to be in cooler weather that is for sure. The GPX route I am follow says Dargo to Blue Rag to Dargo, so a loop, I don't think it does the whole blue rag, just a section (hopefully not the hardest section 😂) I did search easy to moderate tracks when looking for GPX files so hopefully it is only moderate the section I am on.

Hey Joe if its a hot place your riding. I put a few Hydralite Ice Poles in my Camelback. It keeps the water cool and when I reach where Im going, I can replenish my minerals and salts as the ice poles have melted and really healthy for you.

Also i did over 45,000km on it last year, riding alone reliability is probably the most important thing and I've had no issues.

Really enjoying your adventures and reviews of the Himalayan. I’ve picked up one this week, 2018 model with less then 1000kms. Been riding since I was 3 and really enjoying the simplicity this bike offers. Looking forward to exploring the back roads of qld and maybe a cape york trip next year.
Thanks mate, glad you have enjoyed the series. That sounds like a great buy with only 1000km on it. Yep there simple but they get the job done. There is an motorbike adventure tour company up in Cairns that use the Himalayan on there tours up to cape york so you know the bike is good for it.
I was going to offer to meet you up top and join you for a day. But my bike sold yesterday. Going down to Geelong to pick up the new one next week. For you, the best is yet to come. Hopefully you have Mckillops bridge on your route. Easy riding, but spectacular.

Great idea to work on your skills first, I did a lot of dirt biking to get my skills up (as I started later in life on a bike like you) before I went out on these adventures. The tyre I got was the HEIDENAU K60 SCOUT it has a bit more space between the lugs than the Mitas, so give a bit more grip off road and clears mud a little better.
Another great video Joe, I noticed a stop you were forced to make with the breathalyzer, is that common or what, anyways aside from that just an incredible trek you were on, after years of seeing pictures than later in life when RUclips came along just makes me yearn to visit that much more, but until then will just keep following my friend. Yes breathalyzer I guess are common, especially in summer and near areas where alcohol is serviced, I probably come across them less than most as I normally out in more remote areas, it saying that it's not the only breathalyzer I go through on this journey. Yes it was a great track, I really like the ones that wind along the rivers, there are more to come.
Rode Echuca - Benella - Bright - Hotham - Omeo - Mitta Mitta - Kiewa - Wodonga and Back to Echuca via Shepparton last weekend 800km, by myself in 1 day without a "plan" or a map. Possibly the best riding roads in the country... with amazing views! Your videos certainly inspired me to throw a leg over and go get lost for a day - whom do I invoice the back pain to?

For smooth-bark gum trees, the bark that protects the tree from the heat of the fire is often shed soon after fire, to spectacular effect. In the weeks after the fire, the dormant buds, known as epicormic buds, produce new shoots and leaves and give the trees that strange green trunk appearance.

yes mate it was a great ride just cruising along. Apparently yes they were shoots coming out of the trees, at first I thought is was vines but nope it is the trees and yes they do it after fires hit.

Thanks Bill glad you are enjoying the series. Yes definitely good if you are just getting used to the dirt. Ride it as if there is a car coming around every corner and you'll be good. Remember to enjoy the process of being a beginner and getting better, all the little wins/improvement are awesome, i have been loving the process. One thing I would recommend is getting some time on a dirt bike, or even some type of off road training course, the biggest difference is body position (compared to the road), once you get that it makes life so much easier and more fun on the dirt. Have fun out there mate.

If you're staying on road mostly and you need the space the hard ones are great, and the ability to lock them is a lot less stress if you going to go for a hike and leave the bike or go into shops over leave it somewhere over night. The other bonus in getting in and out is quicker, easy to through something in. The softs are lighter. and can feel it when off road. I dropped the bike with the softs on, I had to drag the bike around on it's side also (that's in the next episode haha) and had no issues and I have the cheapest pair you can buy. I think I am leaning towards the softs if you're main going off-road, if manly on road the hard ones make more sense. I hope that helps.

As an experimented rider, would you mind telling me if the Himalayan can bear two people and also the stuff, if yes, what speed can you run with as Max?
I have never had a passenger on my bike so I am not sure, I have seen a Himalayan with a passenger and gear on it in the second episode of the Bali series on my channel at 5.28min, but no idea of a top speed.

That's kinda weird.....you guys have to submit to breathalyzer tests at random? Don't your laws down there prevent what amounts to 'guilty until proven innocent'? The cops need a definitive reason to suspect you're driving impaired before they can subject you to road side tests like this.....
I had this discussion with an America guy which we figured we probably come at this from a different angle (nether right or wrong just different). Here it is all about safety, I'll take a breathalyzer tests everyday of the week no problem and even the drug test (same thing but for drugs), if it helps stop that one idiot that chooses to drink then selfishly get behind the wheel of a vehicle and (from Statistics) have a good chance of injuring or kill others on what is a public road (so a share service provided by the government (so the community as a collective)). The random testing has become a massive deterrent for people who have been drinking to make the right choice, which is awesome. Also the fact it does not require a police officer to make a judgement call is another bonus, just a yes or no answer. And it is only a 30 second process. The America said that a lot of people in the USA would probably look at it from a civil liberties point of view in the US. (were as here it would be seen under a terms of use, you can use the road but there are rules about - speed, where to drive on the road, driving in a safe manner etc... as it is a shared space). He also brought up a point that there is probably more tension between police and the public (police weary a gun might be pulled on them or vice versa). Here I'd start having a chat with a police office at anytime anywhere (I go through another breathalyzer test in another episode and start having a chat with the officer while still recording) so they are seen here to be a service that helps. Again this is all generalisation and lots of people would have lots of different experiences good and not so good. Hopefully that explains the differences.

Glad you are enjoying the series mate. Don't tell anyone but I have a KTM EXC-F SIX DAYS, the most fun you can have on two wheels. Different bikes different experiences all are good. It's like surfing, I love riding hollow tubes over shallow reefs in Indonesia but also 1 foot high long point break waves just gliding along. Yes I am greedy I want it all haha.

It's good to be in cooler weather that is for sure. The GPX route I am follow says Dargo to Blue Rag to Dargo, so a loop, I don't think it does the whole blue rag, just a section (hopefully not the hardest section 😂) I did search easy to moderate tracks when looking for GPX files so hopefully it is only moderate the section I am on.
Another awesome video mate. Wife and I really enjoy watching. Awesome tracks, really makes me want to expand my riding experience and try more dirt roads...maybe another bike is in my future

Hey Joe if its a hot place your riding. I put a few Hydralite Ice Poles in my Camelback. It keeps the water cool and when I reach where Im going, I can replenish my minerals and salts as the ice poles have melted and really healthy for you.

thanks mate, glad you are enjoying the series. The Himalayan gets the job done for me and I don't have the skill set to find the limits of those high end bikes so it's perfect for me at the moment. Also i did over 45,000km on it last year, riding alone reliability is probably the most important thing and I've had no issues.

I’ve picked up one this week, 2018 model with less then 1000kms. Been riding since I was 3 and really enjoying the simplicity this bike offers.
Looking forward to exploring the back roads of qld and maybe a cape york trip next year.
Thanks mate, glad you have enjoyed the series. That sounds like a great buy with only 1000km on it. Yep there simple but they get the job done. There is an motorbike adventure tour company up in Cairns that use the Himalayan on there tours up to cape york so you know the bike is good for it.
I was going to offer to meet you up top and join you for a day. But my bike sold yesterday. Going down to Geelong to pick up the new one next week. For you, the best is yet to come. Hopefully you have Mckillops bridge on your route. Easy riding, but spectacular.

thanks JB I am glad you are enjoying the series. Great idea to work on your skills first, I did a lot of dirt biking to get my skills up (as I started later in life on a bike like you) before I went out on these adventures.
The tyre I got was the HEIDENAU K60 SCOUT it has a bit more space between the lugs than the Mitas, so give a bit more grip off road and clears mud a little better.

thanks mate, gad you enjoyed it. Yes breathalyzer I guess are common, especially in summer and near areas where alcohol is serviced, I probably come across them less than most as I normally out in more remote areas, it saying that it's not the only breathalyzer I go through on this journey.

Rode Echuca - Benella - Bright - Hotham - Omeo - Mitta Mitta - Kiewa - Wodonga and Back to Echuca via Shepparton last weekend 800km, by myself in 1 day without a "plan" or a map. Possibly the best riding roads in the country... with amazing views!

Thats a big day but an awesome ride. Yes I found I need a month of riding big milage everyday before my body gets use to riding over 800km.

Daily I am not sure, the only cost I do know is to ride around Australia in the last series it cost me $2400, fuel, food, accommodation (not a lot, most was free camping), ferry's, tyre, and a few other bits and pieces.

yes mate it was a great ride just cruising along. Apparently yes they were shoots coming out of the trees, at first I thought is was vines but nope it is the trees and yes they do it after fires hit.

Yes definitely good if you are just getting used to the dirt. Ride it as if there is a car coming around every corner and you'll be good. Remember to enjoy the process of being a beginner and getting better, all the little wins/improvement are awesome, i have been loving the process.
One thing I would recommend is getting some time on a dirt bike, or even some type of off road training course, the biggest difference is body position (compared to the road), once you get that it makes life so much easier and more fun on the dirt.

Geday Joe , so what is your opinion on the panniers ? Soft or the hard shell ? I am about to buy a set and would value your opinion , Kevin
If you're staying on road mostly and you need the space the hard ones are great, and the ability to lock them is a lot less stress if you going to go for a hike and leave the bike or go into shops over leave it somewhere over night. The other bonus in getting in and out is quicker, easy to through something in.
The softs are lighter. and can feel it when off road. I dropped the bike with the softs on, I had to drag the bike around on it's side also (that's in the next episode haha) and had no issues and I have the cheapest pair you can buy. I think I am leaning towards the softs if you're main going off-road, if manly on road the hard ones make more sense.

As an experimented rider, would you mind telling me if the Himalayan can bear two people and also the stuff, if yes, what speed can you run with as Max?
I have never had a passenger on my bike so I am not sure, I have seen a Himalayan with a passenger and gear on it in the second episode of the Bali series on my channel at 5.28min, but no idea of a top speed.

That's kinda weird.....you guys have to submit to breathalyzer tests at random? Don't your laws down there prevent what amounts to 'guilty until proven innocent'? The cops need a definitive reason to suspect you're driving impaired before they can subject you to road side tests like this.....
I had this discussion with an America guy which we figured we probably come at this from a different angle (nether right or wrong just different).
Here it is all about safety, I'll take a breathalyzer tests everyday of the week no problem and even the drug test (same thing but for drugs), if it helps stop that one idiot that chooses to drink then selfishly get behind the wheel of a vehicle and (from Statistics) have a good chance of injuring or kill others on what is a public road (so a share service provided by the government (so the community as a collective)). The random testing has become a massive deterrent for people who have been drinking to make the right choice, which is awesome.
Also the fact it does not require a police officer to make a judgement call is another bonus, just a yes or no answer. And it is only a 30 second process.
The America said that a lot of people in the USA would probably look at it from a civil liberties point of view in the US. (were as here it would be seen under a terms of use, you can use the road but there are rules about - speed, where to drive on the road, driving in a safe manner etc... as it is a shared space).
He also brought up a point that there is probably more tension between police and the public (police weary a gun might be pulled on them or vice versa). Here I'd start having a chat with a police office at anytime anywhere (I go through another breathalyzer test in another episode and start having a chat with the officer while still recording) so they are seen here to be a service that helps.
Again this is all generalisation and lots of people would have lots of different experiences good and not so good.
