    (Maybe you could make that comment sticky, Vincent) To all Ep950 owners: LG calibration studio now supports HDR! As well as a more precise mode for calibration.
    There also is a new firmware for the display which can be installed using the "LG on screen control software"
    Last but not least I'd like to mention how to enable the 24fps/48hz mode. I've had a hard time finding that out so maybe this info is useful to some people: keep the joystick pulled towards you for about 10 seconds. You will be prompted with a message stating that you have now enabled that option. It can then be found in the general settings. Happy new year to all of you!

    The 32" 4K market is so frustrating if you want good HDR... only monitors that are $3,000-$4,000 or more do a praiseworthy job it seems, and they're generally marketed for content creation. Most everything else ends up around the $1,000 mark or less. At that range it's mostly IPS, sometimes a VA, definitely no OLEDs and all with HDR400 or HDR600 which is edge lit at best. I guess I'm one of the few who wants a nice 32" 4K for content _consumption_. The general message if you're looking to spend in the $1,500 range seems to be go get a 48" CX. But even if that thing would fit on my desk how can it be useful when sitting 3 feet away? And once you're further than that, is it really a "desktop" anymore? Not so much imo.
    Well, rant over = P

      The key to using a 55" & larger TV as PC Monitor is treating it as a 4x27" monitor combo All-in-One. Have a proper large desktop with good depth and it's a no issue any more. You don't use the whole screen area for web browsing or reading etc, only for movies & games do you go full screen. For browsing treat it as 4 monitors and have smaller windows on-screen.
      After a while you might consider 55" being to small and look for 65/70+ sizes. But then 8K would be more in the ballpark of necessary rather than 4k @ 55".

      God, I relate to this so hard. Several months ago, I was looking for a new computer monitor that was 4K and had good HDR because I wanted to use it to watch 4K Blu-rays while at my computer desk. But at the time, there was basically nothing that met my needs for a price I could afford. I ended up rearranging my room and computer set-up and saving up several weeks of paychecks from a part-time job to buy the 48-inch LG CX. How weird that a large TV ended up being more affordable than a medium-sized computer monitor with comparable specs. And 48 inches is about as big a screen as I can fit into my tiny living space, too.
      To be fair, the CX is a fantastic TV, and I'd say it was worth the money I spent on it. But damn, did I try to find a smaller screen.

    Thanks for the review. I was hesitant to spend on this monitor until I saw your review, and I will say -- for creators, this is the first truly spectacular unit in terms of color and picture quality since wide LED IPS broke the 27" size barrier! I don't regret being an early adopter. 3 things to note though: 1. I cannot get an Calibrite/i1 Display Pro to calibrate (in SDR) correctly due to an issue with reading pure reds. It's being investigated by Calibrite, then handed over to X-rite as OEM manufacturer. SpyderX works ok. I don't have any fancier spec to try. 2. The whitepoint at D65 seems a bit off compared to my various other monitors - a bit on the yellow side. I ended up targeting Judd, which I hear was what Sony did for their RGB OLED. Works much better. 3. LG support is non-existent. No one responded to my support Q re LG Calibration Studio and the Display Pro for weeks before I got a courtesy msg saying they don't know the product and are trying to find someone who does. At this price point, targeting a pro market, I find this very much wanting.

      I found with my LG WOLED, it was necessary to use a spectro for an accurate whitepoint calibration. I wasted so much time experimenting with alternative WP's, alternate observers and even perceptual matching. Luckily I found a good deal for i1Pro2 on eBay and got one. After profiling my meter, the difference was instantly noticeable! Now I use D65 WP and CIE1931 (like you're supposed to) and everything looks as it should. No way I could've done that without the spectro and be happy with the result.

    Hello Vincent! Thank you very much for your in depth and professional video reviews! Love the quality and subtle humor that goes into them! Here is my question and I hope you can help me (a bit at least). I am an aspiring colorist, have been working in a little post house for a couple of years now and want to go full freelance now. I have been working on a SWIT BM-U243 so far. (Not well known brand yet but very decent 10bit IPS displays for SDR grading) I am at the point of where I have to buy my own reference monitor now but can't spend a fortune. I have only done SDR grading so far but that is partly due to the limits I have hardware-wise and I'd like to at least be able to venture into HDR grading in the future a bit. My two contestants therefore are this LG OLED and the Asus Pro Art (either in 27" or in 32") I am having a really hard time chosing one though. Of course I'd love the extra vibrance and spice an OLED would give me and I am sure it would greatly incrase the fun when wokring on it but I am a bit afraid when it comes to longevity, accuracy over time and screen burn. I also think the lack of HDR standards supported with the LG is a big downside. Can you give me any recommendation on which of the two monitors is more suited for professional, everyday color work in mostly SDR (at least for the time) and with the most potential for HDR grading in the future? Would really love to hear your thoughts on this! All the best from Germany!

  • @MrJemabaris

    Hi Vincent! I bought this monitor after this positive review of yours and for the most part I really love it! What I really do not like is the fact that LG calibration studio seems to be really basic and I am having a hard time trusting its results. Also the fact that there is no HDR calibration available sucks. Do you have any infos about when LG is going to implement that in their software? As far as I understand it, the only option right now to hardware calibrate this monitor for HDR is a 2000 Dollar license of Calman Studio? This seems no right given the price of the monitor itself. I also wonder what the new (came with the latest firmware which took forever to flash) black offset function in SDR modes is for. Would love the hear back from you since I'd love incorporating some HDR grading in my workflow but can't do so until I find a feasable option for calibrating HDR. All the best from Germany, cheers!

Liebe Gruesse

      I never watch RUclips on a monitor. Why would I, when I have an expensive TV, for the same purpose, and in much better quality?!
      About the looks:
      If you take a look at pro grade monitors from various vendors, like Sony, Eizo etc., they look absolutely horrible. They look like cheap, no name brands, with a lot of dials and/or buttons. They look nothing like high end. But they cost $20-40.000.
      And that look goes the same for any monitor, used in TV Studios, film grading room etc.
      It's really only the Apple displays, that are shiny, and it's really a fail, from a grading or monitoring perspective. You absolutely don't want a shiny edge around your monitor, when you sit and color grade in almost total darkness, at 100 nits brightness setting for SDR grading, and 1000+ nits, for HDR.
      It's just one of many reasons, no professional company would ever use the Apple monitors for these kinds of workflow.

  • @Viscte
    @Viscte 2 года назад

    Make sure when using your OLED as a monitor you make the task bar auto hide, you use your web browser in full screen mode and get an extension for your chromium browser called scroll bars which allows you to hide them when browsing. In games, if you have the option make sure to hide your hud. Also it helps to set windows to high contrast dark mode. Set a screen saver to run after 30 seconds and if you must have a desktop background have it as a slide show or a moving one.

I know it's dual cell and you talked about the downside of the power consumption, but when I looked up the Hisense Dual Cell Series SX and compared the U9DG some specifications and build quality, they are different. I am curious if Hisense fixed any issues with the Series SX. Love your reviews. I hope you get your hands on the U9DG dual cell tv. The U8G is better than the Samsung QLEDs with deep blacks, colours, and brightness. Even giving LG OLEDs a run for their money by competing with the deep black picture quality. So I really am curious about the U9DG now. Thanks.

    Just hope they establish a 31.5" line of various grades. Hopefully one day can buy an 31.5" OLED monitor for $1k even. 1440p 144hz, or 4k 60hz.
    Sick and godd@mn tired of the $500 ------GAP-----$1.5k+ that exists between normal aspect plain LCD monitors, and advanced backlighting monitors.
    Save a few laughable 6 zone bloomfest FALDs for $1.2k or whatnot.

    • @Rusvul
      @Rusvul 3 года назад

      Agreed. I spend enough time staring at my monitors that I could justify something in maybe the $1.5-2k range as a "prosumer" purchase, painful as that would be on my wallet. Once it goes in to $3k-4k though... I'm not using my monitors to generate money so it just doesn't make sense. The advice is mostly go get a 48" or 55" CX but that's just not gonna work for me. Even if it fit on my desk, it'd be comical to sit 2-3ft from such a display, and the DPI is the same or worse than 24" 1080p levels. No thanks. The first company that fills the gap in 32" 4K with an offering that has a decent feature set and costs around $1.5K could do pretty well in the market imo. But it seems we're in the minority because it feels like there's not much coming any time soon.

    Fantastic panel, hopefully they find a way to improve the near-black performance, maybe splitting the subpixels to disable part of it completely when close to black? Hopefully similar panels will be available at high refresh rates soon.

    • @alastairduffield6334
      @alastairduffield6334 3 года назад

      Pretty sure the way to “fix” near black performance is to stop the pixels switching off ever. This is the only way to avoid the difference between the lowest and next lowest level of luminance literally being infinite. If it raises the level of the black floor a small amount this is effectively negated by raising the room ambience above absolute black.

    Is there a reason that your videos colors look off sometimes? Especially the reds and greens? Only notice it, in certain HDR videos. Looks exactly the same on my CX, and iPhone 11 Pro Max. For example, when you show the spectral power distribution chart...you can see what I’m talking about there...
    It’s like you’re grading in BT2020, instead of DCI P3. Tho I’m not really the one to be talking about this lol. Just something I’ve noticed.
    Btw...this monitor looks 🔥 not to mention, should destroy a WRGB, in terms of color/color volume. Man WRGB is disappointing as hell, in terms of color volume, at higher luminance levels/shades. I just honestly don’t think there’s any beating QLEDs color/color volume/color separation. I can tell you, I miss that color and color volume probably more than the black levels, and contrast of OLED. There’s just something missing entirely, in a lot of my HDR/DV content, that even a “budget TCL r625” could achieve....but the CX just can’t.

Only knowing every detail in east asia where the PMMA is cast, the oleds, ltps, are researched and produced, calibrated, etc. would one truly be able to fully realize what such reference level information display is capable of. There is alway "shareholder theory" in mass manufacturing meaning some part is not the best for monetary reasons usually it is the PSU not the panel of course. 465 nm, 525 nm and 625 nm are considered ideal primaries and the spectral radiance diagram given here appears very close to that ideal.
