The film was not rejected for the Oscars by the academy. It was rejected by the selection committee in India. This committee has always been weird.

Thanks and appreciate your taking the time to watch this wonderful film and giving your unbiased opinions on the film .. It is a hard film to watch for any person but the truth must be told about the colonial brutality of the British Raj in India for 200 years.
Regarding the Indian soldiers firing on the crowd.. the British strategy in India was always 'divide and rule' .. so instead of bringing in the local Punjabi soldiers [who they knew would refuse or revolt], they brought in the regiment of Nepali Gorkas, who will have little emotional attachment to the local population. Furthermore there are reports and testimonies from eyewitnesses including British soldiers who participated in the shooting that General Dyer was walking amongst the soldiers, with his pistol drawn, threatening to shoot anyone who refuses to shoot directly at people, because some of the Gorkas felt so guilty that they started firing at empty spaces to avoid killing civilians.
By the way, we don't hate the British , same as today's Israelis don't hate Germans for their past atrocities, we just hate the colonial British rule in India. Indians are very forgiving people and are intelligent enough to understand that today's generation is not responsible for the actions of their ancestors, unlike the ''white hate'' / ''white guilt'' being encouraged in your part of the world. Ironically an Indian is now the Prime Minister of U.K 😜✌
Best wishes and regards from an Indian dude domiciled in Hong Kong. 🙏💖 ..

I think you guys will love "3 idiots", it's an amazing film,
what really happened is more harsh than what is portrayed, there was a well in the park after shooting opened, all jumped in it with or without getting shot, in the end after shooting, the well was fully covered with dead bodies, this is just one part of the park
Indian soldiers did revolt that's how we got our independence, it took a visionary strong leadership from a guy called "subash Chandra Bose", Gandhi didn't make our independence possible, it's Bose who took indians fighting for British in Japan and formed a separate army which went from Japan to india for liberating india but they lost, but when other indians fighting for the British all over the world got to know about this, at same time they revolted leading to indian independence

Marie.. it is great to finally see someone acknowledge the inequity! Lots of Americans reacting to RRR re-imagined it as Washington and Jefferson (or some other Brit) fighting the Brits.. but it is more Geronimo and Siting Bull fighting colonisers. Reality is today's americans are the most successful colonisers who completely took over the land of the indigenous population, rule it with little recourse to the natives..India is one of the few places where indigenous population fought back..

    It was 10 times worse.
What they didn't show is he individually corrected the soldiers who were missing the shots and ordered them to shoot at the densest section of the crowd so that more people can get killed in less time and Bullets ( Remember in RRR)

The movie is not meant to be a gore porn , what is shown have shown the point.

      @@harshgarg7542I think u misunderstood.
Just 10 seconds of shot of showing him how he ordering to shoot at dense areas wouldn't made it a gore porn.
4 min of massacre scene is nothing short than peak level of gore.

English is most spoken language in India. I think Marie is right about the use of English by Sardar Uddham , he was using his identity and inherent prejudice to hide his competency of english language.
It is a statutory requirement in India to have such warning in the movie.

The answer to your question about why the soldiers could do what they did .....is rather simple to understand......rather than looking at India as a country look at it as a continent......with diversity and population more similar to an entire continent than a country. Now just imagine a Egyptian British soldier sent to suppress revolt in south africa. For the Egyptian soldier the south Africans are not his people. It was same for those soldiers .....they were not locally recruited .

What’s about Lunchbox as a sorbet?
P.S. I’m trilingual, I speak English, Hindi and Punjabi
P.P.S. Usually British would ‘divide and rule’. They would assign a different group of people as part of army/police over a completely different part of country. Like here in Punjab Jallianwala Bagh Massacre, the soldiers were Gorkha (Nepalese). And General dher walked around correcting the aim of soldiers who was missing humans throughout the duration of shooting.

37:41 they didn’t want to hurt the British sentiments or showcase the British colonial murders and atrocities which were similar to the Nazis in the millions of ppl they killed . So didn’t choose it as the Indian submission for best foreign film. Same as RRR.

30:22 .. Speaking of Seinfield, I remember they did an episode on the group travelling to India. It has many exaggerated stereotype or borderline racist jokes. But then again the show characters did that for many things so in show's context it was ok I guess but problem is the depictions subtly imact perception of many in US audience.
