  • On the latest episode of YKY we discuss Debbie's pick, which came highly recommended by our Indian watchers. We were looking for a more "grounded Indian film" after the last two we watched. This definitely meets that criteria. It's the true story of the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre and one man's two-decade plan to assassinate the man responsible for the horrific act against the people of India. It is a powerful and disturbing film directed by Shoojit Sircar with a mesmerizing lead performance by Vicky Singh. This film is not for the weak of heart do not expect RRR or Baahubali. This is a serious film about serious events.

From an Indian historical perspective, the ‘Gandhi persona’ is cultivated for the world which likes to preach what they themselves don’t follow. Those who love to indulge in moral shaming others using what that persona represents( utopian ideals like absolute non violence etc which was actually never practiced even by Gandhi). So reality and Gandhi the person’ that India had to endure and still does is quite different. .Gandhi the persona would have never happened without British effort. But that’s what colonialism does.It damages a country in more ways than one ,creating ideological conflicts in the people they want to control usually supporting the one that serves their purpose as the right one. Many Indians also joined the army as their traditional occupations had been destroyed and they had no means of livelihood.Soldiers in this particular massacre were Gurkhas ( Nepali soldiers in the British army,India still retains some regiments today). The British used this a lot as a divide and rule policy. They would have brutal and barbaric non Indian Muslim guards to supervise Hindu revolutionary prisoners on life sentences to break them etc.The details are very complicated and graphic. The movie Gandhi is also not very well liked in India as it basically whitewashes what happened ,with a little conflict thrown in here and there and is mainly for the western audience. It never mentions the millions dead and the cruelty they used.Basically the British ‘Raj’ was one of the most racist, brutal, bigoted rules in history.( The no. of dead from famines alone in those 200 years is conservatively 30 million). And yes ,they have not apologized for anything nor returned any of the loot. That’s also why most Indians thought RRR went soft on them.
Also to the point about guilt, there was none because at that time they actually believed they were a better race. It’s the same with American Indians and white colonizers. One just has to watch the umpteenth offensive cowboy movies. The real problem is not the past,it’s what is happening now.I have heard many Americans speak up about it.To be very honest, not only have the british not acknowledged their wrongdoings ,I don’t remember any British movie or narrative which is not condescending, gaslighting or misrepresenting the Indian story till date.So I think that attitude of superiority still persists there, way more than in the US.
Also Sardar Uddham was not sent to the Oscars as some jury members thought it might seem that Indians are anti British.Just proves the point about the damage colonialism caused.
India horror genre is not very well developed but Tumbaad was a genre defining movie indeed,as it’s not really horror but folklore horror about human nature?

However, the worse thing that happened to the Native Americans was the fact that entire civilizations and people were essentially wiped out by plagues inadvertently brought by early explorers. Indians don't hate Britian or Europe , but yeah we are still waited ng for apology for colonisation from Britians leadership/Royal family.
British started capturing India by near 1750. By 1850 they have either defeated all Indian kingdoms or kings had surrendered to them.
Kings remained but with no real powers. So yeah many did become British puppet but none of them had any power to overthrow British by 1850.
Regarding Gandhi- he his highly controversial in India. Our Independence was gained after lots of bloodshed ,our country partitioned.
Gandhi asked non violence against British but asked Indians to fight World wars from British . Indian soldiers lost lives fighting British war . Attacking them at that time would have led to Independence during world war 1 itself.
Also many wars was also to retain colonisation. So Gandhi pushed Indian soldiers to help Britian in retaining Colonising other countries.

32:10 that was the Divide and Rule Policy of the British. They divided a United India into these multiple provinces, pitting one King against the other, and capturing Kingdoms through the "Doctrine of Lapse".
The fact is that the British only fought skirmishes in India. They never fought a "War" because they knew they'll get annihilated if they did. Instead they usurped power through deceit and by breaking/dividing India into multiple factions. They knew they can't fight a billion people, so they decided to target few: those Indian leaders who rose up to fight against Oppression. They were brutal in the treatment of the leaders. Many of these prisoners were sent to Kālā Pānī Jail (also called Cellular Jail) in the remote Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Guantanamo Bay pales in comparison to what happened to the leaders in these jails.
They whitewash it by saying that India was never United and was always divided "provinces". That is pure hogwash and them just whitewashing their crimes. The Truth will come out and the World will know about it. Through education, movies whatever it might take. The Brits can no longer hide the evils of their ancestors. We are not expecting an apology or even reparations. We just want them to acknowledge the wrongs.
Somethings are so horrible, they cannot be forgotten or forgiven. But there can at least be a closure to that horrible chapter. The Brits haven't yet given closure to those wrongs and still act as if they never did it (or it wasn't them but the rich/wealthy class which did it etc etc. The list of excuses are endless).

GANDHI'S Role was minimal say former British PM Clement Attlee who signed on the decision to grant Independence to India.
A conversation took place between former British Prime Minister Clement Attlee and the then acting Governor of West Bengal Justice PB Chakraborthy. In 1956, Clement Attlee had come to India and stayed as a guest of the then Governor. Remember, Attlee was the man who, as the British PM, had signed on the decision to grant Independence to India.
Chakraborthy then wrote a letter to the publisher of RC Majumdar’s book, A History of Bengal. In this letter, the Chief Justice wrote, “When I was acting Governor, Lord Attlee, who had given us Independence by withdrawing British rule from India, spent two days in the Governor’s palace during his tour of India. At that time, I had a prolonged discussion with him regarding the real factors that had led the British to quit India.” Chakraborthy adds, “My direct question to Attlee was that since Gandhi’s Quit India movement had tapered off quite some time ago and in 1947 no such new compelling situation had arisen that would necessitate a hasty British departure, why did they had to leave?... Attlee cited several reasons, the principal among them being the erosion of loyalty to the British crown among the Indian Army and Navy personnel as a result of Netaji’s military activities.”
That’s not all. Chakraborthy adds, “Toward the end of our discussion, I asked Attlee what was the extent of Gandhi’s influence upon the British decision to quit India. Hearing this question, Attlee’s lips became twisted in a sarcastic smile as he slowly chewed out the word, m-i-n-i-m-a-l!’a
This startling conversation was first published by the Institute of Historical Review by author Ranjan Borra in 1982, in his piece on Netaji, the Indian National Army and the war of India’s liberation. To understand the significance of Attlee’s assertion, we have to go back in time to 1945. The Second World War had ended. The allied powers, led by Britain and the US, had won. The axis powers led by Hitler’s Germany had been vanquished. The victors wanted to impose justice on the defeated armies. In India, officers of Netaji Bose’s INA were put on trial for treason, torture and murder. This series of court martials came to be known as the Red Fort trials.

People in our nation have divided beliefs regarding gandhi, some who are supportive of our own GOP, the congress party can't have enough of him and boast a lot about his non violent protest and all.
But then there is another section which is a bigger section than the 1st that think that gandhi & nehru were nothing but puppets of british installed at the helm by the british to rule our nation through them after they had declared they will give us Independence on 15th August 1947.
Personally I belong to the 2nd group, the far right, for me gandhi was a sham and a puppet and this nehru guy handed over our freedom fighters like Subhash Chandra Bose and Veer Savarkar to the british & americans after the WW2, which is nothing less than treachery.
So next time you want to watch that british movie "gandhi" again, take it with not just a pinch of salt but with a tonne of salt as it's funded, acted and made by the british to make themselves look good. Not a single gandhi movie other than that one has succeeded on the box office that was made by Indians.

33:07 The Kings were actually treated horribly by the Brits. Firstly, you need to differentiate British Empire from British East India Company. This is an important point many miss. The British Empire came in later.
This was the modus operandi of the British East India Company:
    1. Setup a branch of the British East India Company (it was a registered company in England. The Crown wasn't controlling it until the 1857 First War of Independence - which those Britishers call it as "1857 Indian Mutiny") within every province in India.
    2. Pay the King for a private garrison controlled by the Company for securing Company interests.
    3. In exchange, the Company would build infrastructure (which invariably focused on their profits and that would mean they built infrastructure without keeping in mind the needs of the populace). Railroads were built only to serve the purpose of the British East India Company and not the general populace.
    4. Become extremely rich by exploiting natural resources for export to the West (giving a tiny portion of the proceeds it to the King of course - to ensure the King does not revolt).
    5. Buy out smaller Indian companies/home run cottage industries, and then shut them down, establishing monopoly in various industries. That made lots of Indians jobless/unemployed.
    6. Turn India from producer and exporter of finished goods to importer of finished goods. British East India Company was literally the largest Company in India and the Planet as a consequence. There was no match for it anywhere as there were no Monopoly laws to break the company when it grew so big. Even the British Empire feared British East India Company.
    7. Force Kings to sign the "Doctrine of Lapse". This ensured that the Kings had to have a successor (male child). If the King dies without producing a male progeny, the British East India Company would take over the Kingdom. If the King produced a female progeny (and no subsequent male heirs), the British East India Company would immediately take over the Kingdom. You should read about Queen of Jhansi (Rani Lakshmibai or Manikarnika - there is a movie that is made on her too) who fought the British on the battlefield. The Company even orchestrated assassinations of Royalty to ensure that the Kings don't have a bloodline and made it look like accidents. Or they would pit one King against another by creating divide. The Kings would fight against each other over contentious matters and whoever loses, their Kingdom would be usurped by the British East India Company through the "Doctrine of Lapse".
    8. Employed horrific brutal tortures, executions (ISIS, Al Qaeda pales in comparison) to suppress any form of dissent/revolt.
Indians were used to invasions and fighting Wars. We were never used to this sort of cleverness, deceit and brutality. Which is why it took us 200+ years to get rid of the British.
The British Empire came later. When Indians first revolted and declared a War on the British East India Company in 1857 we had almost defeated the Brits when the Company approached the Crown for protection. That is when the Crown took over the British East India Company and brought India under direct rule.
So it went from fighting against the British East India Company to now fighting against the British Empire which also had a powerful ally: United States. We suddenly found ourselves not just fighting the British at home, but also had to now fight the World for gaining Independence. So we had to change strategies and adopt different techniques to throw the British out. It was primarily due to Subhash Chandra Bose and the founding of the Indian National Army that scared the Brits. That part of history is whitewashed and Gandhi was projected as some sort of "savior". He was anything but.

    • @veloce99
      @veloce99 Год назад +1

This is a great summation of how mercantilism let the British excuse themselves of personal and national responsibility when building their Empire and when competing with the other European nations, all as if no one mattered in the lands they were plundering. My goodness, that's a long sentence. I apologize.
Very few Americans know much about the details of Indian history so I like springing from these fine films into learning more, especially from individuals like yourself.
It's also hard for Americans to see how the colonial experience still obviously scars the nations that eventually won their independence. Turns out when you mangle or even eradicate whole cultures on every continent you destroy their future as well. If you want to check out another example you can look at what the Belgians did in Rwanda, defining and dividing Rwandans for their own profit. That is one direct cause of the 1994 genocide.
Thanks again for your comment. I'm so happy to get thoughtful perspectives from people who enjoy the show and the discussions it can generate.

You have to understand India was huge back then --- India, Pakistan and Bangladesh were all one country called India. The country had never collectively fought for anything before as it was ruled in trenches by princes. Gandhi's non-violence movement did bring lot of people across country together. Now back to point, British used India's diversity as divide and rule. They pitted prince against prince, people against people. The soldiers shooting the people in Punjab were mostly from Baluchistan Afghanistan part of India who had little emotional or cultural connection with people in Punjab. British ensured they didn't post soldiers of same ethnicity in a particular region.

Dyer made sure the soldiers chosen were from not the same region
Like the baloch , and Nepali gorkhas having no emotional attachment towards the people of that region
And tbh as much I hate to say that
Indians were colonised by the Britishers because we were like that
It still baffles me how britain conquered india
With so little soldiers in comparison and with a supply line of 9 months
    It was our fault

Drew, here are some english movie recommendations for horror, you might have seen most of them or not.
    1. The Haunting (1963)
    2. The Devil rides out (1968)
    3. The woman in black (1989) (another recent adaptation of same was done few years back, with same name, starring Daniel Radcliff
    4. The Three Mothers Trilogy: Suspiria (1977), Inferno (1980), Mothers of Tears (2007) (First 2 are good, third is not so good but finishes the trilogy, also BGM and sound is really good in first). Also, I feel, Suspiria (2018) was more like awakening of the first Mother, where as Original was about ending her.

Gandhi was more like a politician instead of a freedom fighter. India didn't get freedom because of Gandhi but Gandhi was more like face of ruling elites after british left. Then they started a propoganda of Gandhi's nonviolence and Britishers also supported it by movies about Gandhi. This way world wouldn't consider british rule in India as worse because Britishers left India after some nonviolence, that's how story goes.

But it saddens me when a director uses a film to push one groups own agenda. 27:44 No, he doesn't want revenge. He didn't cross Russia and get to Britain to get revenge, he came to Britain following the words of his friend, to gather international support for their revolution. He didn't get employed at Dwyer's house to get revenge, he did it to try and understand how a man like that could live with himself after doing the things he did. Killing Dwyer was not an act of revenge, it was an act of revolution. The bullet may have been fired at Dwyer, but the blow was dealt to British Imperialism. There's nothing in the whole movie that suggests revenge as the main motivation. If that's how you understood it, then you're missing a large part of the story.

Which is really sad. Would even say USA really effed up by not re-electing Trump. Might be an unpopular opinion for most Westerners but Indians have a totally different take on this. You can see how well received Trump was in India (when he visited in Feb 2020 just before the pandemic). Lot of brainwashing, fake news, media manipulation and psyops. I bet many are regretting not voting for Trump now that inflation is at an all time high and USA is back to involving in never ending foreign Wars. They are literally doing everything they blamed Trump would become. And media is silent.
If US does not re-elect Trump back in 2024, it won't survive. China is extremely happy that Trump is no longer the President. That much I can tell you for sure. They have their puppet safely installed in the highest seat of power.
Sorry if it ruffles any feathers. I don't like political correctness. So had to be said. Saying it as a friend and well wisher. I don't like to see US lose like this. India wants to build excellent relations with US. Especially in Defense/Military tech where we want to phase out our Soviet weapon systems and upgrade to US weapon systems. But not with the garbage administration that currently rules Washington right now. When Trump was in power, we signed many multi-billion dollar deals with the US. Because we like and trust Trump. However, acquisition has slowed down once Biden came to power. Biden is a CCP plant. We don't like to deal with anyone who is pro-CCP.

Yes smart move to control India thru rajas as it would've been impossible to govern otherwise. Even India was won by the East India company by leveraging troops from one region eg north and Deccan against Mysore in South. Similarly North Indian troops against maratha Empire. The salary paid for troops was one enticement and whichever master pays is good for me was a common sentiment as loyalty to the one who paid was more important. Hindu, Muslim or Christian.
