    Salaries might be half of the US but we get to keep more of our money. You pay 42% tax once you factor in Federal, State and local taxes, plus Healthcare insurance. Whereas in the UK you'll only pay 26% and get free Healthcare, plus 28 days of paid holidays, and paid maternity leave for you and your partner by law.
    Not to mention healthy food not laced with cancer-causing chemicals and growth hormones.
    For example, Mcdonald's fries in the UK consist of Vegetable oil, Potatoes, and salt. In the US there are 14 ingredients, one of which is used in making rubber yoga mats.

    British here! I’d like to mention the small word changes in England. You don’t have to change your language because we can understand you but you will have to say crisps for what you call chips as we can get confused and thing you want fries. Other than that we have been surrounded by American TV and books so we know all your vocabulary. Also English slang is very different. There are a bunch of things like “mandem”, and some other things I don’t know how to spell. This slang is typically used by gang members or people who act publicly indecent (boys at my school) so try to avoid using it. Also, gangs are very common in England so if you come across one pretend you don’t see them. If they talk to you just be polite because they sometimes have weapons and the worst part is that they are often minors.

    The subject of health costs is mentioned in passing, but it deserves more detailed discussion. The NHS is not perfect, but you will not be bankrupted by enormous bills for treatment (or any bills for that matter). The majority of patients pay nothing for prescription drugs. Those who must pay can purchase a "season ticket" which covers the cost of recurring prescriptions. Criticising the NHS is something of a national sport in the UK, but in reality free treatment is taken for granted and relied upon by the UK population.

    Speaking from first hand experience, when considering both total financial compensation (including benefits) and total cost of living (including rent), you'll have far less savings after a year of living in London, doing similar work and living in a similar apartment/flat, than you would even if you lived in expensive US cities like NYC or SF. Quite simply, UK costs more, and UK jobs pay less.That difference is even higher if you compare UK suburbs to US suburbs. I think it wounds British pride for some reason to just admit that the financial quality of life is worse in the UK than the US - especially for skilled labor like doctors, engineers, and business professionals. It's not even close.

    • @halfhawkhalfman

      @Hugh Quillin To be fair, it is the largest metropolitan population area in the UK, as well as being the seat of the central government and both the financial & de facto cultural capital of not only England but also of the entire UK. From that perspective, it'd be the American equivalent (at least from an influence standpoint) to combining New York City, Washington DC, and Los Ageles into the same city and then wondering why it garners so much attention.

    One thing you forgot to mention is that in the UK, the tax man is not going to ask you to file taxes if you're not residing in the country. That's all depends on countries who have a double-taxation agreement. You may not have to pay twice if the country you're resident in has a 'double-taxation agreement' with the UK. Depending on the agreement, you can apply for either: partial or full relief before you've been taxed.

    I was born and raised in England and it’s so fucking shit🤣 I literally get away on a holiday or long trip as often as possible, the weathers pretty crap, lots of crime etc especially around London, everything just keeps getting worse with the government etc. I’m looking myself and would advise people to look at different European countries like Spain, Portugal, Montenegro etc, much cheaper cost of living, cheaper property prices and much nicer weather

  • @han9488
    @han9488 Год назад

    i think it’s because the exchange rate has got a lot worse (for the UK) with the dollar, as it used to be that the $1 was about £0.5-0.6, and the difference in cost of living and salaries still reflects that. however, the exchange rate is now $1=£0.8 so a british person will find american prices crazy and unaffordable.
    this being said, it works on the american’s favour, so if you can bring over a load of dollars in your bank account using one like Starling with no foreign transaction fees, you should actually feel like your money goes a lot further in the UK than the USA. plus, you don’t have to worry about healthcare or schools being funded by the local house prices (schools are either funded directly by the government or by local city/county councils)

    There’s exchange rate, yes, but also the lower relative cost of living. Accommodation in rich cities where people would often earn higher salaries (like New York) is all significantly more expensive than housing in London, which is saying something. Then the free healthcare really comes into its own, too.
