The unabridged version of the book is my favourite Steven King novel. I liked the mini-series: the casting of the principal characters was spot-on. Sinise and Storke absolutely nailed it.
David Coleman ---Sinise was terrific, Ruby Dee, Ray Walston, and Jamie Sheridan were fabulous. Didn’t care for Rob Lowe or Molly’s performances. Molly whines thru the whole film--annoying. Rob has a very flat affect w/little facial expression.
David Coleman The Stand is my favorite Stephen King novel. I read the unabridged version when it came out and for some reason didn’t like it. Recently I reread it and thought it was great. It really fills out the original very well and the extra material doesn’t feel like filler

I remember King coming to my 6th grade glass and giving a writing lesson. His daughter Naomi was in that class as well and he mentioned writing a dragon novel for her because she loved dragons. He also mentioned " Firestarter" which I believe he was working on at the time.
That must've been something. I discovered Stephen King in 1982 when I was 14 years old, and you had an experience I could only wish I had in junior high school.
Also has Miguel Ferrer who played in Twin Peaks as Albert Rosenfield as well as in another Stephen king project the movie the Night Flyer and the actor who played Dr.Kelso on Scrubs(I don't know the actors name)
Yup, his character is killed by Flagg at the hight of the outbreak. I always thought it was interesting that Flagg actually took his time to kill the zellot, I mean flagg kills countless people, but he seemed to go out of his way for this murder specifically. I don't know if the character is in the book and it gives an explanation, but in the series it just seemed almost random.

Bought the paperback in '79 at the Stars & Stripes bookstore at Ft. Hood, TX. The cover caught my eye (you'd get the joke if you're familiar with that particular cover), and as a huge Springsteen fan, I got a kick out of seeing some of the lyrics to "Jungleland" on the first page. Of course, there were also lyrics from "Boogie Fever," by The Sylvers, but I bought the book, anyway.
The Stand is the best type of book to read from Stephen King and Randall Flagg is one of the best villains the post apocalyptic and dark fantasy genre and of all time.
Great book...and the mini series was good for the time, especially the practical effects. I wish the Randall Flagg character was scarier though, no disrespect to the actor
Scarier would have been great, but ABC still had to abide by the whims of the Knights of Standards & Practices... which, incidentally, is why you NEVER saw the "Ritual of Chud" in 1990's version of "It". No kidding, though... Google it.
I liked the fact that Flagg was unnerving and his scariness was subtle. It was like you knew this guy could go all out at any minute but was always trying to contain himself to accomplish his goal, but can see moments were his control of himself cracks here and there.
I find Stephen King’s short stories (and the early portions of his novels) to be far more terrifying than the overly bloated later portions of his novels. The realistic early portions of the release, progression, and response to the superflu in “The Stand” are far more frightening than the later tedious, supernatural elements.
I think it's less an early-late thing, and rather he is a full hit or miss writer. The Stand, The Shining, Misery, Dreamcatcher and The Institute are all amazing and come from different eras, whereas Christine, Tommyknockers and Rage are all some of his weaker works and are relatively pretty early on.
Yeah! My Dad (RIP) introduced me to The Stand when I was a kid. The miniseries came out when I was about 9 or 10 and horrified me. I read the book in my early 20s(the longest book I have read to date) and now with everything currently going on, the plot is even more eery.
Yep. I don't want to rag on the guy because his videos are overall good, but geez, he doesn't know jack shit about LaserDiscs! I mean he could have learned all the basic info by just skimming it's wiki page I bet(I haven't actually looked at it's wiki page because I actually know about LaserDiscs!) ;-p They were popular in the 90s way before DVDs came out a few years before 2000. Anyone that claimed the(analog) picture quality was better than DVDs is an idiot or blind. My favorite LaserDisc in my collection has to be Evil Dead 2, because the LaserDisc itself is a shiny blood red instead of silver! It looks so cool! :-D p.s. They even released porn on LaserDisc! I bought about a dozen discs brand new when some online retailer was blowing out their inventory after DVDs came out and LaserDisc was near death. They were only 5 bucks each!
SirReptitious now you can get VHS tapes for 2-5 for a $1. When I didn’t have cable, I would go to the local video store and buy a couple to watch each weekend.
@@SirReptitious Mine is Mr Frost with Jeff Goldblum. Laser disc version is wayyy better than the DVD. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys movies like The Omen series.
I agree. Unfortunately, CBS All Access is in the process of butchering the remake for the Stand. At least, that's based on the terrible casting decisions.
I want a version of the Shining that’s true to Kings work but not cheesy and kinda shitty like the mini series on tv in the late 90’s. Don’t get me wrong I adore Kubricks version but Jack Torrance was NOT the actual villain at the heart of the novel and making him the villain takes away from just how truly evil The overlook is supposed to be
Walkin' Tall Kind of. I found the new Pennywise more annoying and obnoxious than scary. And the scene where the kid kills his father with the switchblade made me want to throw things at my tv.
Actually, the trade-off ended up being that the fourth part of the mini-series was nearly verbatim with the end of the novel. So you missed the good part.

I loved 1994's The Stand! Just a terrific story and a really good cast. Gary Sinise as Stu, Laura San Giacomo as Nadine, Ruby Dee as Mother Abagail, Matt Frewer as Trash, Rob Lowe as Nick, Miguel Ferrer as Lloyd, and of course Bill Fagerbakke as Tom Collin were perfect choices for their characters and matched my expectations from the book excellently. However, my two favorite characters from the book were not cast as I well (for my taste!). I always thought Diane Lane would have been a much better choice for Frannie than Molly Ringwald. She would have brought a seriousness to the part Molly just lacked. Also, and most importantly in my mind, Phillip Seymore Hoffman would have been *perfect* for the part of Harold Lauder. I believe Harold is the most interesting character in the story and Hoffman's amazing persona would have nailed it.
I'm not a big fan of Rob Lowe, but I loved him in the '90s TV series of The Stand. Lowe totally nailed the character of Nick. I can't see anyone else coming close to Lowe in the role. And likewise, Gary Sinise as Stu Redman. Finally, Goldberg as Mother Abigail, give me a break.
King is in talks to do a remake of the miniseries with CBS to make this show realistic and more grittier as well as taking place in our modern setting.
@@BennyLlama39 considering the filmmaker Frank Darabont created "The Walking Dead", and directed the Stephen King films "The Shawshank Redemption", "The Green Mile", and "The Mist", that would be quite interesting

Personal fact: the local pet store in Tooele County, owned then by Mr William Bradford, my future first official boss in high school, provided the rats in “The Rats In The Corn” scene, as they filmed that one in a farm nearby in Grantsville. I would later own several descendants of the actors. 🐀
Sheridan was terrifying. Mcconaughey was disturbing. They played different versions of Flagg from different timelines and worlds, so the differences make complete sense.

Not sure what they do and it's their business. Maybe it's because I live alone And t v is such a wonderful companion. But my whole family was like this about t v shows and books and movies.
The Stand is still my favourite Stephen King novel. I think the portrayal of Flagg in the 80s version I'm sorry but that's the Flagg that stands in my mind. Even with the cheezy CGI, he had this likability which for playing essentially the Devil, you would expect that. I think the Dark Tower's Walter definitely showed Flagg's evil more, but didnt really show him to be likable. You knew he was evil through and through. In the Stand, Flagg was more just... oh hey nice charismatic guy next door, wanna get out of jail? Sure just take my hand and seal this pact and you're free. And I really loved Flagg's relationship with Trashcan Man. It was like "hey, I feel sorry for the guy who's going batspit insane, I know you love me, thanks man" I actually felt like Flagg was human then.
Jamey Sheridan was hand's down "Randall Flagg". There's no other. I watched the new series of "The Stand" but, by far, prefer the cast of the original, again hand's down. So much so, that I binge watched the original version while in the middle of the episodes of the new one.
they actually did release the full unabridged novel it was over 1500 pages long and so awesome....the miniseries was like the cliff notes compared to the book.....i love them both......was so awesome to see the characters come to life
Kristopher Tower very true. There is a lot of stuff cut from the book to make even the mini series. Then again you could probably have a full run tv series in order to cover everything in the uncut novel.
I read the original many years ago, years later I read the unabridged version, all 1200 some pages! Way more info regarding the Capt. Cribbs sickness and the gov't's reaction to the problem -the chapter(s) are/is titled 'the circle opens' I believe. The mini series is fucking awesome, don't expect great visual effects but that is a staple of King's adaptations to film. The true treasure is the storyline.
I never read the original. When the miniseries came out, king rereleased the novel as the complete uncut version. It had molly ringwald and gary sinise on it. I picked it up at meijers when I was a teenager right before the miniseries came out.
I watch The Stand a couple times a year. It's my birthday and Christmas gifts to myself. 😁 I don't think a remake could ever be the same. As a huge fan of so many in the original cast, I just couldn't do it. I still quote: We. Are. Dead. And. This. Is. HELL!
Same. I bought the DVD set when I spotted it at a store once. My mom keeps borrowing it from me. Lol. It’s her favorite adaptation of King’s work. Mine as well. She hasn’t watched it this year cause of covid, but I certainly did. 🤪
Oh its coming........or was......sure it's filming has been delayed ironically. But it's scheduled to hit Hulu or Amazon or whatever in October or November. James Marsden is Stu Redman......Amber Heard was cast as Nadine Cross.....Whoopi Golberg as Mother Abigail. Other cast members include Greg Kinnear.....Heather Graham......Marilyn Manson.......Odessa Young is Fran......hope it still makes it's initial release because it's going to be BIG after all the Coronavirus crap
The film also cut bits from the final publication. Two notable characters who weren’t in the film were Carla Goldsmith ( Fran’s mother who disowned her for being pregnant out of wedlock) and Rita Blakemoor ( who Larry met in New York). Interestingly, most of Rita’s role was given to the character of Nadine, and according to a line from Fran’s dad, Peter, it seemed Carla had died a while before Captain Trips.
Yautja Prime It's entertaining and relatively faithful to the source material, but it's still a TV Series, so it's somewhat limited in dramaturgy, character development and the "cinemato"graphy is absolutely terrible (standard run of the mill 80s TV series camera work). The effects are limited and so are several (albeit not all) supporting actors. Additionally, it unfortunately looks pretty cheap. Having said that, if you decide to watch it and don't expect to see a cinematic masterpiece like no other, but turn down your expectations a notch or too, you'll be able to enjoy it. It's not a revelation, but not too bad either and the general story is still pretty gripping, so once you start, you want to continue, to see how it ends (even if you know) and will be able to ignore most of the shortcomings. And it's certainly better than Langoliers or Tommyknockers. So yeah, go ahead and watch it, but don't expect it to be the definitive King movie/series (there are far better ones). BTW, there is an upcoming 10-episode "The Stand" TV series going to be released in 2020 (by ABC iirc, but not sure).
Finally dude and I would've love to see George A Romero's The Stand be made also Joe Bob Briggs was in the movie to he was the state trooper in the beginning

Flagg was the alias, Walter was his real name, and he wasn’t the main bad guy. The main villain was the Crimson King, Walter was just his lackey seeing as how he had imprisoned himself on a balcony of the Dark Tower.
Just saying, all of that is laid out in the Dark Tower, which is his REAL masterpiece. Approximately 4500 pages that ties pretty much his entire universe together...
Jimmy De'Souza that’s a pretty unfair assessment, but I do agree that the final battle was a bit anticlimactic. That’s never been Kings strongpoint. It’s the way he joined, directly and indirectly, 30-40 years worth of seemingly unconnected novels and the blend of genres. Or, as he told the Constant Readers bear the end, it isn’t about the destination, it’s about the journey.
Jimmy De'Souza firstly, I’ve read the entire series multiple times, and while there IS a line in there to that effect, it’s not literally Santa Claus, nor does the Crimson King look exactly like him. However, there is some symbology there concerning Christmas as a time of family. Honestly didn’t catch that until like my 3rd time through it. It’s also evident in the ending for Roland’s “team”, if you will, where they wind up in Central Park on Christmas Day with Santa hats on.
Remember as well that the stand was a work of the seventies and it wasn't connected to the dark tower cycle until the late eighties in wastelands. The retcon wasnt finalized until wizard in glass.
Man I remember when this movie was a two part miniseries on tv. My dad loved it. I was only like 8 or 9 when the movie dropped, and I didn’t understand the plot at all. I do remember bits and pieces like Tom Cullen, Rob Lowe’s mute character, Gary Sinise, Nadine the troublemaker and Corin Nemec’s character falling for her to the point of stupidity, and I barely remembered Randall Flagg until you mentioned it. I watched it 20 years later in 2013-2014, and I came to dig it more. It’s a classic and imo one of the better tv adaptations of a King novel for sure.

Actually, Flagg is not satan...he is a demon. After Nadine jumps to her death, Flagg sits on the balcony flooring, looks DOWN and says, "I'm not going anywhere. You hear me?" Like he is telling satan, he isn't giving up.
Yeah, this and Storm Of The Century my favorite (King) mini series.
Randall Flagg was the devil incarnate. I loved this movie. Jamie Sheridan was awesome in it. When I have seen him in other shows, I just think of him as Randall.
I used my VCR and recorded each 2 hour episode over 4 nights on my TV. I think ABC presented the mini series. I watch the whole thing every once in a while. It's one of my all time favorites. I even have the hardcover first edition that features the two figures fighting on the cream colored cover. I can't remember how many times I've re-read it. The Marvel treatment of the Stand was really good ! They really stuck to the original novel as well. Good review Minty !
I was just a kid at the time, but i remember rushing home from a Boy Scout meeting to be in time for the 3rd episode. Loved it. M-O-O-N! That spells 'loved it.'
The unabridged version of the book is my favourite Steven King novel. I liked the mini-series: the casting of the principal characters was spot-on. Sinise and Storke absolutely nailed it.
Matt Frewer as Trashcan man, I don't think anyone can better that performance!
David Coleman mine too. First Stephen King book I'd ever read

The soundtrack W.G.Snuffy Walden did for The Stand was my study music on loop whilst attenting college as an older adult student. It kept the stress at bay; it still makes me feel good when I listen to it.

Funnily there wasn't much dragon content in The Eye of the Dragon
@@alyce1617 Love this book from him, wonder why they haven't tried to adapt it yet
I liked Jamie Sheridan as Randall Flagg, greatest drifter of them all.
Agreed 100%
True, the way he went from charming to evil is frightening
Close. I still prefer Jack Reacher. The Novel Reacher, more than the movie one.
Something about him makes him perfect for that roll.
Retired LA Lakers star Kareem Abdul Jabbar also had an uncredited role. He was the homeless Religious Zealot.
He was credited as "Monster Ringer".
Peter Banderas he is in the book as well (at least in the Unabridged version).
@DaFuq thanks, was close. I have not seen it in like 15 years, but I remember the name was interesting.
This was the greatest Stephen King miniseries I've ever seen! Epic, colossal, and philosophical!

First time I saw the miniseries, I thought that was a commercial, until it was half way through the ad.

Emberxxx2002 I just finished it on Audiobook. Excellent with the 400+ pages put back in!
I own both versions and prefer the expanded story. Truly, I much prefer the later King books when the editors gave him his way more.
I still found him super creepy, but in no way scary
CJ Meiko I dunno, the combination of the mullet and the denim outfit seemed pretty scary. LOL
Love this miniseries! Hope for the remake this actor playing Stu can be as good as Gary Sinise's performance.
Nobody will do Stu Redman like Gary Sinise.

At the time of the mini series I read the book in 6 days. My brother still has the VHS TV recording we did.
B Rose I did that too.
I find Stephen King’s short stories (and the early portions of his novels) to be far more terrifying than the overly bloated later portions of his novels. The realistic early portions of the release, progression, and response to the superflu in “The Stand” are far more frightening than the later tedious, supernatural elements.
Would love to see the long walk.
Sue Sutherland yeah!! That’s one of my favorites👍
Could not agree more. My first King book was Night Shift about 35 years ago, and it is still a go-to.
Laserdisc was not introduced as an alternative to DVD, it proceeded the release of the DVD by a number of years.
Yep. I don't want to rag on the guy because his videos are overall good, but geez, he doesn't know jack shit about LaserDiscs! I mean he could have learned all the basic info by just skimming it's wiki page I bet(I haven't actually looked at it's wiki page because I actually know about LaserDiscs!) ;-p
They were popular in the 90s way before DVDs came out a few years before 2000. Anyone that claimed the(analog) picture quality was better than DVDs is an idiot or blind. My favorite LaserDisc in my collection has to be Evil Dead 2, because the LaserDisc itself is a shiny blood red instead of silver! It looks so cool! :-D
p.s. They even released porn on LaserDisc! I bought about a dozen discs brand new when some online retailer was blowing out their inventory after DVDs came out and LaserDisc was near death. They were only 5 bucks each!

A novel like this could only get an acceptable live action interpretation through an HBO Game of Thrones style miniseries of three seasons.
yes! But only if they butcher the last season and ignore the wishes of King. Joking aside they are remaking it for CBS all access.

Definitely Jamie Sheridan gets my vote! I can’t picture anyone else in that role.
If I remember correctly, that part was true to the novel. Most of the discussions of Fran's mom were in retrospect or memories.
King’s novels are often cut down. There would be too many characters/actors to deal with for a theatrical film or mini series.
This is one of the first things you have covered that I'm unfamiliar with. I can't believe I've never seen it considering the cast.
It was a great movie/mini-series. It's so long that it takes up 2 DVD's.
It's 6 hours long. King IS the best! 'The Eyes Of The Dragon' came out in 1987 NOT 1984.

It's entertaining and relatively faithful to the source material, but it's still a TV Series, so it's somewhat limited in dramaturgy, character development and the "cinemato"graphy is absolutely terrible (standard run of the mill 80s TV series camera work).
Please do a video about Rose Red by Stephen King
You read my mind! Loved that miniseries too!
You left out the possible reference of RF from Needful Things. The devil's palms were smooth lil flagg's so just figured it was worth a mention
Jaime Sheridan played an amazing Randall Flagg! I can't really imagine him being outdone. That smile of his was what you think the devil would have.
Finally dude and I would've love to see George A Romero's The Stand be made also Joe Bob Briggs was in the movie to he was the state trooper in the beginning
The Stand was one of my first reads by Stephen King. And it became one of my favorites, right after The Shining.
And then Randall Flagg became a cop on one of those Law and Order shows.
Jayme Sheridan gave Randall Flagg a sexy swagger that Christopher Walken could have never pulled off.
Thank you for the 'look' into "The Stand"...always one of my favorites...."Moon"....network TV just doesn't do these anymore....from Roots, Rich Man, Poor Man....we get 'reality' TV now !
Alexander Skarsgard is going to be Flagg on CBS All Access series!
and Marilyn Manson is going to be Trashcan Man.
with James Marsden as Stu Redman.
whoopi goldberg is mother Abigail
now if only they still release this miniseries this year as corona might have hit a little close to home
Whaddya reckon, Joaquin Phoenix as the walking dude?. "I'll buy that for a dollar".
Flagg was the alias, Walter was his real name, and he wasn’t the main bad guy. The main villain was the Crimson King, Walter was just his lackey seeing as how he had imprisoned himself on a balcony of the Dark Tower.
I wish i could like this comment more then once
Walken and/or Goldblum would of been AWESOME!
I don't know Dafoe might have been pretty entertaining.
Man, can you dig this series more?
It's a righteous series.
Man can you dig this series more?
You missed the cycle gang in Boulder? Hmm? There were full spectrum social groups on both sides in the miniseries.
