@@Midori_Seabreeze I am working on getting my TEFL certification and hope to go to Japan! Can you let me know a bit more about your company? It sounds great!
@@jonicole54 Like Jenn has said in the past, I’m not allowed to discuss my company in a public format by name while still employed. I will give you a hint though. It is one of the companies she has given as an example. Our allowance was never brought up in my interview and I have never seen any evidence online claiming our company does this. So, I was shocked when they handed us our contracts. In fact, most of everything I’ve read online about my company is disgruntled employees discussing policies that no longer exist as of 2018. I’ve had nothing but a positive experience. :) My TEFL is used... barely. If you’re lucky and you get a good JTE or HRT that trusts you, you will help more in the lessons. I am fortunate that my JTE trusts that I can explain things in a simple format. Good luck with your applications. A lot of companies are always hiring. I’m sure you’ll get through. Don’t feel like you have to wait. ❤️❤️❤️
I’ve been a teacher in management role in the uk for 7 years and have always been interested in teaching in Japan so this was really helpful and interesting. It would be awesome for a part two where you do a video with someone who was a full time Japanese teacher to hear the comparison. Thanks for this Jenn xxx
Ohhh if only i was still in japan haha. I wonder if people who are full time would actually go on RUclips.. I imagine it would be frowned upon. Even I was discouraged from doing it but... I did it anyways lol
The question your student asked you about seeing the same colors was really interesting. I guess when you're constantly surrounded by naturally similar looking people questions could arise when you see someone that looks vastly different from 99% of the people you've known your whole life.
I found this super interesting. I’m a “World Language Teacher” (I teach Latin) in the United States. I’ve worked for both public and private schools. When I was getting married, I told my department head since she was in charge of making the schedule. During the next period, my principal comes into my classroom during class in a panic. “You’re getting married?!?”
Yay, you answered my question. Props to you for having the patience to teach kids of all ages. The closest I've come to teaching anything was teaching university faculty how to use the technology to set up their courses in the online system my university used. It was an interesting dynamic when you're a student yourself yet you're teaching sometimes faculty who you've had for courses.
I'm not planning on teaching there, but this was still super interesting! It gives a more "real" perspective of what English teaching is like for foreigners. Thank you for this video 🤍
I never taught English when I was in Taiwan, but I knew many who did/ back at Texas Tech in the 1980's there was an older gentleman living in the dorms, always surrounded by Asian students at lunch / dinner in the cafeteria. After a while I talked with him a few times, I think his name was Mr. Aldridge but my mind is not certain at this point. He had taught English in Japan for many years, and at 73 was living in the dorms in Lubbock.
...I will never complain about teaching at 4 different schools again XD I agree with your comments on pay; dispatch companies do keep getting lower, and while it's enough to pay bills, it's def not enough to save and travel after bills, rent, and other necessary expenses are taken out. As much as I love public school, I am trying to find a different job next year mostly because of that reason.
Still 4 is rough lol. You’re allowed to complain 😂 and yeah sadly the dispatch companies are getting cheaper and cheaper BUT also the amount of people wanting to come to japan is huge.. so they can offer cheaper work because people will still come. It’s also why the turnover rate is high. People just use it as a way to get into Japan and then when they realize there’s not really a chance to be promoted etc.… They leave this path and go on another one
I'm a teacher student myself and currently work at a preschool, which I love! But omg, I always had such a gut feeling that you were a teacher?! Anyhow, it's very exciting to hear about how teaching English works in Japan! 😄
LOVED this!! It’s so different than working in a Japanese company here. I’m treated just like my Japanese co-workers and expectations are basically the same even though I’m a foreigner. Thanks for this!! Have me Inspo for filming my foreigner in a Japanese company video. Have had the questions for a while but hadn’t filmed yet!
Yes for sure because you’re also a full time employee with benefits paid etc. **The dream** Your perspective would be really interesting I think for people to hear in your video (*wink wink*)

Thank you for the video! Very informative, and nice to hear a video about teaching English from someone who wasn't on JET! 😊 When you said about assisting in other lessons other than English, would you be allowed to speak to the students in Japanese then? Also your eyeshadow looks so pretty in this video! I love the shimmer! 🤩

My question did get indirectly answered (I think) as I asked if you were under the JET contract. What types of companies do you recommend to do ALT positions other than JET? I'm applying for JET right now but I would love to see my other options, incase I do not get into JET.
This was amazing!!! Thank you so the face you made about the visible tattoos was hilarious and great! I have visible tattoos so this helps. But if I have visible tattoos and cover them for the process of getting in they will be okay? And of course cover all the time right?
Ah, English teaching... I don't miss it. lol But I do miss all the wonderful people I met because of it (including you, of course) 😉 Just curious - how did you feel about having to eat lunch (kyuushoku) with the elementary school students?
the one good thing about working at that dispatch company is meeting awesome people ♥️♥️ And I actually didn’t like school lunch 😂 the calories were very high and fish was served a lot .. (I hate fish) BUT, I know many alt’s loved it!
@@LayersOfJenn haha yep, lots of fish. They also loved giving out little cartons of milk (for kid's bone health, I guess), which I never liked. But I always got extra portions and had to talk to kids while eating everything, then play with them outside afterward on a overly full stomach. I don't how the other elementary school AETs managed. Lol
This was very very thorough and informative and interesting to watch! I was shocked when you said they'd show you the middle finger and the f word! D: And the story about having to report everything to the vice president before everyone I know oh too well xD At my previous job it was the same. Not all companies are like that but I'd say 80% of them have a similar hierarchy and rules to follow.
Haha you know how it works! And yes actually.. I’ve had also a lot worse said to me but, I don’t want to put too much about that on here for confidentiality reasons
Great video! Yeah, dispatch companies are notorious as ブラック企業 (evil company). It is difficult to live on just the paycheck from them. JET is better but still not a lot. However, if you are placed in a prefecture in a countryside with JET program, it's possible to save a bit. When my husband was an ALT, he was living in an apartment for teachers so his rent was about $100. Also JET wants have more diversity in ALTs, so they hire from non-English native countries, I think. Now, due to COVID-19 spread, in my prefecture, ALT shortage is becoming a problem. Maybe more opportunities post-corona time, so for those who are interested in teaching in Japan, start researching soon!
Hi Jen 🙋♀️, I have been following you and decided to do the lip filler but the clinic asked that only a Japanese person can do the consultation. Salt vegan products are just not really a thing in japan. They are slow on that front 😭😭😭 inside the box though they do list things as vegetarian. But thank you foe even thinking about it ♥️
@@LayersOfJenn there's tons which are accidentally vegan and it's becoming A LOT more common! Anyone who starts a plant-based snack box in Japan would make sooo much money rn from people trying to get snacks!
asking a personal question. Do you love Enka of Japan? Most traditional Taiwanese love Enka very much and Enka style full of Traditional Taiwanese song.
One thing to add about grading - I know a lot of ALTs who give tests and stuff, and they do mark the tests, but the final grading needs to be done by the Japanese English teacher. Especially in high school. In JHS and ES, it's a little less strict and schools can get away with ALTs handing out final grades (still rare, as it's rare to teach alone). But in high school, if the BOE finds out the ALT is alone in the classroom and handing out grades, it's actually a huge legal thing. It's a different story if the ALT has a Temporary Teaching License, but that's a whole other can of worms.
