Awesome video Tom. That first 2 mins was a cinematic masterclass. The sound was sublime! I know how much effort that takes... loved the whole video and a fav location.
I gave you my like after 3 minutes, because I thought while watching that you do all the filming by yourself, setting the camera set up the drone driving ... just amazing
Many thanks for those long stretches without music. Listening to the sounds of nature, the cracking of ice did me so good. I felt I could smell the air, crisp and cold and clean. Very uplifting.
I miss the Lake District. I used to go on holiday there as a kid, but I haven't lived in the UK for 16 years. Seeing your videos give me a great sense of nostalgia, thanks Tom!
I think the advice at the end is subjective. You would take no images, some would take a couple, and others (myself included) could take hundreds! That's the beauty of photography, everyone has their own philosophy and none of it is wrong. That's why I love watching your videos alongside other photographers, never boring.
Sometimes when your just out with no camera, you find what could be an amazing composition, then when you are looking for a comp, you get a great walk. I loved the conversation with the sheep, “me neither” cracked me up.
Dear Thomas, never mind Spielberg. I enjoyed this trip with you so much. It was beautifully cropped, beautifully scenery, beautiful story telling; Arrh! Do it again..!!! I call it a "grab bag" which I always like to raid. Fantastic looking backpack is the "osprey" -it would seem like. Take care, God bless and thanks for your informative Videos. Pete
Very enjoyable video Thomas, but I quite agree that you have to choose either or a specific goal to photograph at the ideal time of day. Sometimes as you say the two might come together, but obviously a long day hike often starts and begins close to the car when they weather like to be at the best and the summit might be achieved at midday. It will be still enjoyable to watch this video again has a memory of what freedom we enjoyed a few weeks ago! If you're looking for a video opportunity, what about a spoof campervan 'trip' in your garden as a bit of light relief for us all?
I really liked the video. I can no longer hike (knees are shot) but came to he same conclusion when I was hiking. But I always carried my gear because of the “what if”. You get extra points for pointing out that we are all stewards of the wilds and need to help out those others that haven’t caught on yet. Thanks for picking up the can.
Thomas hikes are full of suspense, whether there will be a epic shot or not. Loved you vlogs, you are true man so close to nature and you never get tired. Keep inspiring bro and keep hiking and bringing us such amazing coverage.
Tom! The quality of your films have just been killer recently! Excellent content, and what a way to practice social distancing. I need a good hike soon.
Thomas, your B-Roll has dramatically improved recently. I think I’ve watched every video for the past 2-3 year’s and it amazes me how your video production and planning is just going up all the time. I dont know how you focus on scouting and still stopping to get the same shot in 3 different angles. It’s flippen brilliant. 1 question...what is that thing you were wearing around your neck? Couldn’t tell if they were some form of earplugs or a mini ambient microphone etc?
It's funny, when I started watching your videos I was mostly into photography. Then I paused my interest in that hobby and started hiking and now you upload so much content having both. Thanks a lot Tom! Stay healthy and classy :)
To me, you sir look like Mr Bilbo Baggins from LOTR . I like how in your videos it looks like you are on a quest. I know it is to capture the beautiful picture; yet to me it feel like a journey. A journey to which uncharted land. The view and the combine of music together...feel so relax...and i learn a lot from your experiments of photo shooting. Thanks you so much. Have a good day, stay safe.
I enjoyed the video, because like you I enjoy hiking and making images. And I specifically liked the thought process at the end. I really enjoyed my time in Nepal even if I got less great photographs than expected. It is true I got more images in Iceland where there are so much different areas you can quickly reach. But I feel way more connected to those long hiking photographs because they are more meaningful to me. They are a struggle to get, but such a great reward.
Thomas, I believe that the APSC Fuji lens is an 55 - 200 APSC lens. It provides the "field of view" of an 55 - 200 lens. It is not a full frame lens. If it was designed for a full frame camera then the crop factor of the APSC camera would apply and it would appear as a longer lens as the APSC sensor only sees part of the view the lens supplies.
Great video! (I'm going to watch this video again in a year, to remind myself how hiking and travelling used to be before we couldn't do it anymore... God this is depressing.)
Brilliant effort well done! A couple of those drone shots would have made nice images. I agree, I used to often take my cameras and lenses on long hikes and came to the conclusion that the weight wasn't worth it. Now I carry a tiny Sony RX100 III and it is good enough for when light and location demand a picture, but so small and feather weight I don't feel guilty about not using it.
I need to get myself one of these types of vans sometime in the future, I slept in my car last summer on a road trip to Norway (it was doable but this seems like a much more comfortable way of doing road trips for sure) Stay safe Thomas!
From Thursday 26th March the police are now stopping camper vans, motorhomes and caravans entering the lake district so I think this particular avenue of pleasure has temporarily been cut off, I've never seen Keswick as empty. It could also apply to other national parks.
last year wie did the coast to coast walk . this year normally we go to Greece , ferry is booked for 10 may . but !!! here in Flanders in corona times its more probably that we gonna see beautiful nature only in videos like yours until tis time past away, so thank you for that and hopefully you can proceed making this content in the next few months .
Exceptionally produced video, Tom, you have to be the best on the Tube, as a previous viewer said 20 odd minutes of sheer bliss, many many thanks once again, till the next time...
I call it a "bug out bag" holds all the essentials that I would need in an emergency. If all else fails I grab that. It's in a small water proof case and weighs next to nothing. Never heard it called a baggie before, lol. Great video as always!
Love seeing these videos since I’m trapped at home! I have 2 kids and a wife at home and out of work at the moment because of this whole situation. All I want more than anything right now is to be full time on YT but these kind of videos are helping! Keep Creating! 🎥🎬
I wish I'd seen this video before going on a hike yesterday. Only 5.6 miles but over a very rough mountain trail with much heavier kit. I shoot Canon and thought I'd get some bird photos on the way. No birds. Very sore feet. But at least, out of the house for the afternoon. These days, that's a big win. But I need to look into a second, lighter hiking kit.
I've watched all your videos, but so far this one is my favorite - it is so calming, peaceful and relaxing. Thank you for doing those videos - they are really inspiring!
I doubt this a bit cause 23 miles (37 km) is a long way and I hike a lot (without gear). Based on the footage in this film I guess with a steady pace I think you can do an average of 2.8 miles /4.5 km an hour on flat terrain, which make the whole trip last over 8 hours and that is without stops and shooting ! Can be done, no doubt , and you look in shape, so go do it. However, never ever I was so exited about the next vid. hehehe
I always do this. Go somewhere I’m unfamiliar with. Walk for miles carrying all my gear, trying to get familiar. End up knackered and photoless. A vicious circle.
Yeah, I’ve been on a long hike when part of your body says “just stair at the path, put one foot in front of another” and reality is, photography isn’t your second or third thought. Good on you for finishing the hike. I might have shot that silhouetted tree in the water, but that’s me.
Might just be me but I'd always photograph even if the light might not be quite perfect. Ye never know, might turn out to be a brilliant photo! great video though, fantastic videography!
I think it is interesting how much you brits enjoy the lake district. Dont missunderstand, it seems to be a beautiful park in its own way. But I prefer more wild places for hiking, camping and photography, not man made landscapes. Guess I have become picky since I live in Norway😁
Great hike - you are lucky. We are in complete lock down in New Zealand - not allowed out into the outdoors for hiking or photography- and for 4 weeks. Man the road at beginning looks so narrow - what happens when a car comes the other way - who backs up?
In an earlier video of another long walk, Thomas said that each mile on RUclips equals 1.2 miles in real life. YMMV I especially notice it when he has video of the van pulling in or leaving or driving by. I know that takes a lot of extra time. And I appreciate it all.
M Allberry These drones have an app where you can set it to follow you weather you walk, drive. I think it follows your phone at a certain distance? Or you can set it? Not too sure don’t own one. I have seen others follow at closer distance.
@@TheMoodyPhotographer oh really, the Mavic Air has that? My Mavic mini doesn't unfortunately (but still takes great vids): I'll upgrade that someday... :)
Hey Thomas! With your down time, would you consider making a video showing us what you use gear wise to capture all of your audio? And maybe other gear that is not obvious to us for video and outdoor?
Always enjoy your vlogs Mr Heaton, would have liked to have seen a shot or two, not a walker myself, lives my walking experiences through you and your fellow vloggers eyes and lens.
The Rokinon/Samyang 12mm lens is also great for photography, I'd love to see you shoot some astrophotography with it in June or July when the stars are perfect for it👌
Kind of glad I don't know how these vlogs are made because then it wouldn't be magic. Love how you put all of your little bits together for your vlogs. Great production. Not to worry about the length. Many of us would watch you make coffee and step in mud puddles for hours! Thanks for everything!
Nice walk. Why, and I have inquired before, must you strike a spark to light a Jetboil? Does it not have a piezo sparker built in? (US version does.) Heaton is correct about long distance hiking & photography; if you hit a perfect easy-to-shoot situation as you go you can take a shot. But you can't wait for light, and the exertion weakens your mental focus and patience. It's a tough row to hoe. Looked to me one could ride a bike around that path, really make time and perhaps overcome that issue, or do the scouting.
Was the full distance you mentioned including running back and forth setting camera for b-roll? Just don't copy Ferris Bueller's day off trying to wind back the mile on the van. I am also struggling to get the image of you singing like in the street parade while walking around Ulswater.
But that's not what we would call a go bag, that's more of a just a organization bag to keep electronic related this sorted & organized. A go bag would be more of a ruck sack with gear needed to get out of town in an emergency such as a knife, poncho, ready to eat food, matches, cordage, money, water, fire starting gear, wool blanket, 1st aid kit, etc.
I think I remember that car park - when i walked up to Hallin Fell for a WINDY morning. Correct? No Spam on the trip? Excellent video - enjoyed. Stay safe / stay healthy.
So I finished to watch the video and wold like to give an other like because you deserve it for the 23.75 miles long hike ... but this was not possible ;-) take care and stay healthy
Hi Thomas. We Americans call that bag a “Grab Bag” Keep it stocked with those essentials and just grab and go. Nice video for these self isolation days. Keep them coming. Steve
Super nice video so relaxing, really enjoyed it! but now i feel bad for sitting on the couch eating cookies and know, i would probably do 11,5km in 38 hours :D
It was likely filmed BEFORE the lockdown. If you recall the Nepal trip, he was already back in the uk before the nepal series was release. Likewise with the F4 vids.
Is there a specific reason you're only using the Samyang 12mm for video? I've got an X-T3 with a 23mm F/2 and 35mm F/2 and was thinking of buying a Samyang 12mm as well (hoping to do more astrophotography).
I couldn't agree more, long hiking doesn't make for great photography, I had this experience hiking in New Zealand and the need to cover ground limits the the possibility to find good comps at the right time. Sure you see amazing things, but almost never at sunrise / sunset or at great lighting conditions. To avoid disappointments it's better to focus on either trying for great pics or enjoying the hike! :)
Awesome video Tom. That first 2 mins was a cinematic masterclass. The sound was sublime! I know how much effort that takes... loved the whole video and a fav location.
I love how you muffled the music when the shot showed the exterior of the fan. We notice these little things you do, Thomas. We notice.
The editing for the opening sequence is absolutely sublime :)
It felt like i was on my way to cook meth with my chemistry teacher.
I gave you my like after 3 minutes, because I thought while watching that you do all the filming by yourself, setting the camera set up the drone driving ... just amazing
He is actually flying a helicopter, filming and controlling a drone van. :-)
I gave a like after like 30 seconds lol
We need that connection with the nature and longer hikes is the meditation and free therapy.
That was NOT a wasted day! It was a lovely, gentle piece of filming in the spectacular Lake District - thank you!
