Matthew is usually so composed, it’s always a treat to see him start to lose it during a movie like this.
So this was filmed in my home town. And I didn't know that when I first started watching it but I had heard it was going to be a particularly bad movie. The slow realization of familiarity I had during the opening driving scene is one of the weirdest experiences I've had in my life. "Oh hey, I know where he's driving. He's on Highway 92 heading right towards... oh no. oh no. oh god no."

It's a city I used to visit quite often when lived in the bay area, and still do when I get up there...not only was the 92 crawl unnecessarily long, but the camera wasn't even level lol. Recognized so many of the locations, the diner, the double decker bus, etc.

That was an amazing journey. Seeing how much fun Mathew as having contrasted so well with Emily's squirming in her seat from the cringe.

Whitney Moore (the lead actress in this travesty) ended up being pretty dang cool. She does really great stuff in the online RPG/actual play world - she was part of probably my favorite group of regular roleplayers ever, The Weave Society on Geek & Sundry's Twitch channel. She's also been doing reviews and interviews on the heavy metal scene for years and years in different forms, and through the pandemic she directed a bunch of short films that are actually pretty dang good - who knew that the lead makeup artist of Birdemic would end up being a successful director?
She was definitely the best actor in the movie. The only part of this movie at a professional level.

There was no "they". There were no "producers". It was just one guy with some money he wanted to throw away on a dream he had for a movie.
It was not meant to be bad. This is an honest attempt to make an action sci-fi movie by someone who does not know how to make movies.
Just look at the opening scene in the restaurant. You could not intentionally create something that awful unless you were an actual film maker with some real talent who understood the fine art of irony and and how to mock cliché. And even then, you would be able to tell that it was intentional. You simply cant fake an honest attempt to be good and fail so miserably at it. You cant fake cringe.
I know it is sometimes hard to accept that someone could make a movie this bad and that it would actually exist out there, but it does. For every one that becomes a cult classic there are a hundred more that you will never hear of.

Dude, The Room is 100% worth watching in its entirety. React channels have covered the famous scenes, but it is an insane wreck all around. Birdemic, eh, don't think I could 100% it again. But The Room? It's ... it's just amazing.

One good takeaway of this is that it shows what NOT to do when producing a movie. It’s a cautionary tale.
One of your best reactions, Watching Matt on this one was just as funny as Emily’s reaction, I think I saw actual laughter tears at one point.

I watched this for the first time during a Rifftrax show. If memory serves, the opening driving scenes were so grainy, I thought the movie was made in like 1978. Then dude pulls up in a modern Mustang and I almost lost it. "What year is it? Where am I?"
And yes, there is a sequel.
Yeah, I saw it first on RiffTrax so I can really appreciate it for what it is. I'm glad that you caught the great salesman just casually threw in a million dollar discount unsolicited before closing the deal.
And you don't have to have the cause of the horror antagonist be the protagonist. Sometimes you just set up the movie by getting you to care about the main characters so you have empathy when things go wrong for them.
I'm here at 3:47 and I can't imagine caring for anyone in this ;-)

The story goes that there was a guy hired to do CGI, and the birds you see were used as placeholders to be replaced later. But he quit once he realized the director wasn't going to pay him, so the director just left in the placeholder birds.
You do have one memorable line from this: I think I hear a mountain lion. I gotta go.

I've never seen Birdemic, and I thought, "Well, I'll watch the Matt and Emily version and it'll be done!". But, I'm having real trouble with it, and I'm only able to do around 30 seconds at a time, even with Matt and Emily present. It may take me all day, but I'll get it done, but oh man. Matt, Emily...you have my sympathies for watching it *straight through (*shudder*)....
