Thanks for this video. I was trying to decide if I should add this to my list of things to add. After watching you, I think it will look good on my layout when I get there. Thanks again.

I just purchased the HO version of this kit. This video has been a good preview.

I just came in from my train room and told my wife that I can’t figure out how a few pieces go on this model and as ceo, I was going to leave them off. Then I stumbled upon this video. Lol

Just finishing up mine. Some very small parts on those towers. The large one can be backdated a little bit by leaving off the ladder cage. Figure out you sand bin " load" before you put in your cross braces. I put styrofoam in the bottom of mine before adding the sand on top.

I believe the instructions tell you that small tower is for the steam era. The larger of the two towers is for Diesel locomotives. great video!

Have that same kit. Like the walthers kits easy to make them look realistic. Thanks for sharing. Tim

I am finding the Walthers kits are great for beginners like me.

That is a steam era down spout. Diesels have a sand fill cap on the sides of the short nose and either the sides or top center of the rear, depending on model. I am not certain how to convert that to a diesel, the units I have seen usually have a rack with hoses and fittings to route the sand to the appropriate filler. The big ones have a rolling gantry .
Looks good though! So I subbed.

Thank you! I think I will omit the smaller tower from my layout.

    Hello Sir,
Well I'm enjoying your videos and taking lots of notes so I can remember what needs to be done next and so far I'm very impressed with your work. I have a question about the sand tower kit you are working on at the moment. Now correct me if I'm wrong, but if I see a part like a wooden floor that needs to be painted first and then assembled to the building would it be too out of place if the floor instead of being just painted I would install a real wooden floor and then paint it and stain the deck to whatever the color is suppose to be just to give it that little bit of detail to the building. Would you agree with me or not and why?
    Thank you for your time
    Sincerely
    Allan

I think anytime you can use real wood it can greatly enhance the realism. I suspect it would take some work to incorporate it, but the end result would likely look fantastic.

Just found your channel :) Enjoying it very much as I'm looking for industries to put along the tracks and surrounding areas on my own layout. Thanks :)

@@nscaler454 Thanks :) Although there is talk of the next stage, and the track plan is viewable, I'm still at the table stage. Trying to figure out how to make the staging area below deck. But I think I have it now and will be moving forward soon, right after football Super Bowl! lol Where I live in Reno NV, the tracks that run through the center of town were lowered years ago, to allow through traffic on the tracks and on the roads crossing them. This gave me the idea as to lowering the tracks along the walls to under table staging since I don't like the space stealing idea of a Helix. Also, if you drive I-80 from Reno to Sacramento, CA, you will see the tracks rise UP along the Sierra Nevada Mountains. That is also something that has inspired an image, not of just the lowering the tracks, but of one day "raising" the tracks along all four walls of the room to a possible upper deck. Looking forward to your next video :)

Do you think this structure would work for the early 70s?

    • @nscaler454
      @nscaler454  3 года назад +3

As long as it works in your mind. I am going to be using it on a modern layout, and I justify it by telling myself that CN Rail renovated an old facility. It's certainly no less realistic than seeing freight layouts with steam engines and modern diesels running together, along with a passenger train cruising around the mainline.

The plastic they used for this kit must get brittle after time. I had one of these kits that I had in storage for about 10 years and recently decided to build. The tiny and very thin parts such as 4/5, 14/15, etc on the small tower and 33/35 on the larger tower break apart no matter how careful I was to remove them from the sprues. Plus, the instructions are very unclear about placement of the 10/11 parts on the small tower. This kit is an exercise in frustration nd left me uttering comments not printable here. It would have been useful if you showed actual step-by-step instructions for the towers but nice video on detailing/painting otherwise.

That's unfortunate if the plastic gets brittle over time. Somewhat surprising for an ABS type plastic if it's enclosed in the box. Sorry to hear. Thanks for the feedback.

I didn't have brittle plastic problems, but agree with the other comments. Very challenging kit...
