its agonizing to watch these morally bankrupt sociopaths use this innocent young woman, exploit her most sacred hopes, dreams and wishes for their own depraved manipulations of her. their complete lack of even an inkling that this female person has feelings and a psyche that is not going to be repaired after the damage they do to her- the fact that she'll prob never trust anyone again& give up hope of EVER escaping her tortuous life doesnt bother these guys one bit. brilliant realism! genius!
I love all of the Tennessee Williams movies!The acting sure did justice to the writing. This movie proves how sensual a movie can be without nudity and explicit language. I wish someone out there would turn back the wheels of time. May be theaters would fill up again.
Perfectly choreographed sequence. It goes from about 0:31 to 1:17 without a single cut.
what a horrifyingly wretched bunch of reality Williams conjures up in this little number- he had this gift for presenting the dreadfulness of many people's existence w out making it seem like a spectacle- he made it like, held back, yet at the same time more dismal than it seems reality could even be- like those terrifying stories on the news of some children locked away in a basement- so miserable that it could only be real... and the actors! the direction!
What are you babbling about?? Just enjoy the movie clip, okay?? Jeez, some people on RUclips need a psychiatrist in the worst way!
It's scenes like this one in particular that remind me of a remark wherein someone had all but coined the term 'screwball gothic' expressly for this film. If I'd recall who said it, I'd be the first to give them credit.
A movie like this could never be made today. It would be too erotic for family viewing but not porny enough for NC17 or NR rating.

this is what real life is really like- same as streetcar named desire- all of williams writing- what a genius. practically the entire rest of all fictional dramatic writing is somehow unbelievable- or it misses the depth and meaningfulness of what is taking place - nearly everything produced by hollywood is not as real as this movie cuz its just not awful enough- its more like some story meant to make an impression on people- its hard to put into words

Shame, Shame, Shame by Smiley Lewis. In the film, you see for a short sequence the old Imperial 78 rpm spinning on the turntable. But the version you hear is not the version issued by Imperial. Shame, Shame, Shame was re-recorded with the Ray Heindorf Orchestra for the film soundtrack.
its wretchedness plain and simple- its not even salacious- like when u r getting abused as a child u want to hide the ugly facts- this story- its like the ugly abusive negligent stuff u see or hear your neighbor doing to her kids- u dont want to make a spectacle of it and tell people what u saw like u would with some bomber u saw on the news- u wanna keep it hidden and not have to talk about it w anyone, ever... thats what makes it feel so real and so ugly.
Her character is 20 years old- not a child.
