If your industry is adopting technology that's been used in another for decades... maybe watch a couple of RUclips videos. There's this thing called a PATCH PANEL and it will SAVE YOU TIME AND MONEY. I promise next time I have to cool a data closet I'll check with some HVAC gurus to make sure *I'm* not the idiot.
Most of these are just 3 wire controls for manually controlling dampers they to tune the balancing in a building. I've seen a bunch of them just use 1/8-in tip and 2 ring jacks and they are usually in the vicinity of the damper, although I've seen others use 4 wire telephone cable. They are usually just direct wire to a low voltage DC motor controller (9v or 12v is common). I wouldn't be surprised as RJ11 supplies are getting harder to find at supply houses, they just use Cat3 or Cat5 and RJ45 jacks. But yes if you're going to hack a panel together you might as well purchase a premade one (unless its a situation of just using the parts on the truck).
they should be labelled so people know what they are so someone doesn't plug a device into them and damage equipment I have never seen this before that is probably because I'm in the UK thank you for sharing this with everyone

So related to that. I saw the HVAC guys on the job site the other day and I asked them "why don't you use patch panels?" they just kind of shrugged.

Yes, 100%. Some one is going to plug something in there that might cause a problem.

Still looks unprofessional and sloppy. A small 12-24 punch down would look nice and more serviceable.
