okay but the US will still hold trade relations with us as we help them so much which is really the only reason why we aren't independent today giving us a lot of money
Your position is not popular because people aren't thinking about the status of the island day in and day out; they're thinking of feeding their families with a 30K a year salary in a place where public aid is flimsy and where the local government is corrupt. Furthermore, you already set out your local agenda by voting for your own representatives, senators, and governor; the problem is accountability which is why the politicians elected by the people of Puerto Rico are able to continue their pillaging of the middle class, a behavior that would likely continue unchecked if it were an independent country and changing nothing in the process. Also, the idea that people on the island don't want independence is because they're not informed when they may very well have different priorities or views on the future of the island than yours, shows some level of contempt for the rest of the population for not being "woke" enough. Also, no; you're not living in crippling poverty (yet at least) as you would under independence because, by virtue of the fact you are a US territory, you are eligible for federal welfare benefits and emergency funding, funding that would not be available if you were to become independent. Without the federal welfare safety net and the local safety net being notoriously corrupt and inefficient, chances are a lot of people would be negatively affected by the transition in this regard. Not to mention that even if PR was to become independent, it would likely still depend on the American Dollar like many other independent countries in South America do, thus still being bound to the US economy anyways without the added benefit of a federal safety net. Also, I'm pretty sure that if this really was a Pinochet style-dictatorship like she's making it out to be, the artist wouldn't be speaking to Vice News (an American news outlet) about their views of the American government in the mainland being a dictatorship.
Well said. Exactly what i thought when i visited the island. Good place to visit but I do wonder what Puerto Ricans may eventually be able to achieve if they were to be cut off from the mainland - kinda like how fed up parents may kick out their underperforming son living in the basement. There will be a lot of pain. I just hope desperation won’t drive them to act against the US national security.
Speak for yourself Puerto Rico really really needs the USA don't let these people fool you it's going to be a 3rd world country if they're granted independence...
The 1st, 2nd, 3rd world paradigm is no longer appropriate for describing nations. There is no longer an eastern bloc, a 3rd world nation just means a nation that is neither aligned with the western or eastern blocs and has nothing to do with how functional it is as a state.
@@yeetersnitzel6351 He's right, Puerto Rico would need free association, continued aid, or a new nation to look after it to avoid economic collapse. There's insufficient energy and food resources, no currency, a crippled electric grid, and the industry is mostly gone.

As an American I support Puerto Rico’s independence. Mostly because it’s gonna be a win-win. We’re already tired of having too many liberal states and territories, but I’m sure Puerto Rican’s don’t like us military interventions in Puerto Rico. I’d say PUERTO RICO INDEPENDIENTE!
Either they become a state or become indepent, because as a territory they are being neglected and suffering, and the only ways to stop it would be Statehood, or Indepenance, either way, something in Puerto Rico needs to change
Why doesn't our politicians decree Puerto Rico independent? The US has no business holding colonies. Let the island free. If the US allows Puerto Rican's to keep leaving the island will suffer even more.
I mean the US does own several islands it basically invaded at some point. So "imperialistic" is pretty accurate. I mean its not necessarily a bad thing to be imperialistic. Its kept the US powerful to stomp over anyone who opposes them. In history, its a common thing to do. Cuz it works.
I made a video recently on Puerto Rico. I mentioned the video to someone today and it just so happens that person has been to Puerto Rico multiple times. The topic of the Islands future status was brought up as well. He believes that PR should become a state in order to help it recover better from its financial hardships. He believes that Puerto Rico becoming an independent nation would be a huge disaster to Puerto Rico and would cause chaos. His prediction sounded just like the worse case scenario or something very close to it. He told me things are very bad there. Not just, because of crime, but other things like infrastructure. He told me about when he went to visit how he could take a 2 minute shower and had to improvise in order to get a steady concentration of water on to him. He also told me some people on the island rely on rain fall in order to collect fresh water, but he also told me that there has been a lack of rain recently and that's causing problems in terms of getting water. He lives on the mainland US and he told me his visits to Puerto Rico made him feel more grateful for his life on the mainland. He totally believes that Puerto Rico becoming an Independent nation would lead Puerto Rico into a disaster. He said that the people who are calling for Independence are usually older people and he says that it would be a foolish thing to do. A very interesting and sort of scary viewpoint since he basically said it would be doom and gloom for PR if they went Independent. He also told me about an area where there was a US military base and that provided jobs to the local people, but due to protests the base was closed according to him and he said those local people lost their jobs because of it and that seem to make him frustrated. Basically I had a nice conversation with him and he definitely opened my mind up to some new stuff. Like I said earlier I made a video on Puerto Rico check it out!

Hello! Puerto Rico has been asked by the U.S. Government since the 80's if it wants to stay a territory, become a state or independent. It has been up to Puerto Ricans to decide since then. Anyone blaming the U.S. for it's problems is an idiot. Might want to look in the mirror.
@@DavidJohnson-dp4vv The Philippines were granted independence (in writing) prior to WWII, but told it would be a gradual transition over the course of 10 years. The Philippines were not given the option to remain. The same could be done with Puerto Rico, forcing them out.
@@Jake-rs9nq The Philippines didn't want to remain at the end of WW2 they straight up demanded independence. You just a few idiots online talking about how great they'd be 100% independent no better than random right wing texans.
@@DavidJohnson-dp4vv I think you misinterpreted what I'm saying? The US did not want to retain the Phillipines after FDR was elected. They granted the nation Commonwealth status in 1935 and planned independence to be in 1945. Of course, the war interrupted that, and it became 1946. The US did not provide the option to stay, and the nation did not want to. Both sides were in agreement. The 10 year period between Commonwealth and independence was just to ensure a government had been created to avoid civil war. Puerto Rico is NOT a good comparison, because neither the US nor Puerto Rico have made serious moves towards separation. My point was that the US *could* kick Puerto Rico out, but they wouldn't because it would be unpopular with various Hispanic and Democrat groups. Personally, I don't think Puerto Rico is ripe for statehood. There is too much of a nation present for the island to be a mere state. At the same time, they lack industry and would need to rely on someone to avoid economic collapse if they left the US. Perhaps Free Association with America in exchange for aid?
people who want independence paint a story book utopia when, in reality, corruption would be rampant, regulation would be scarce, civil rights would be violated, inefficiency would get worse, etc.
Alex Frank The question ignored.....Why was Puerto Rico and Guam so important to the USA. Why did the USA invaded the Island? The USA will never let the Little Island go. Why are the Chinese so interested in paying the debt and fixing the infrastructure. Why?
PUERTO RICO NEEDS TO BECOME INDEPENDENT!!!! IF WE BECOME A STATE WE WILL CONTINUE TO LOSE CULTURE AND MORE WEALTHY PEOPLE WILL CONTINUE TO BUY OUR LANDS AND OWN OUR ANCESTRIAL HOMES!!!! SAY NO TO STATEHOOD!!!!
I believe in an independent Puerto Rico just as I believe in an independent Alabama (my homeland) and Texas as well. But sadly, despite all the pro Puerto Rico independence supporters I hear and know, the territory can’t get more than 5% of the population to vote for secession or independence. That has always perplexed me. The U.S. needs to start subtracting states and territories, not adding them if we want our individual cultures to survive.
@@anti-federalist8795 Because money puts food on the table, sovereignty and culture do not. Also there is no reason to be perplexed, everybody, except from rich countries like Norway, wants to move to the US because of quality of life and pay. Why would Puerto Ricans want to throw that away?
Keep in mind that in the last century our people were murdered, imprisoned, and outcasted for wanting independence. Our island bombed for seeking it. The FBI set up an entire department that kept track of files on anyone who was considered a nationalist, an independence seeker. This was known as the "carpetas", and there are people to this day who have a file. We've been aggressively suppressed and silenced by fear of persecution for our beliefs. There's no doubt in my mind that a large part of the island wants independence but are too afraid to voice it and elaborate on a successful strategy to achieve it. Our elders are still split in 2. Half encourage it, and the other half heed a warning to prevent any further tragedy against our people.
Soldiers from Puerto Rico under the command of Bernardo de Galvez fought for the American Revolution to liberate the 13 American Colonies, the independence of the US is owe in part to Puerto Rico the same independence that they deny Puerto Rico. So for now on every 4th of July the Puerto Rican 🇵🇷 flag should fly along with the American flag in honor and respect to Puerto Rico.
Puerto Rico needs state hood not independence. they have voted several times for statehood and they always vote no. if Puerto Rico becomes a state the federal government will be forced to bail out its failing economy. they would also gain representation and all the benefits of statehood. independence would leave them a tiny nation with a huge debt and no trade agreements they would have to start from scratch.
Yo tengo una pregunta ?? Ustedes ven los Estados Unidos dándonos libertad. Y ser un País libre ? Pq to no lo veo.
Please do leave. U.S. would no longer have to subsidize the country and giving them around 6.5 billions of federal aid each year, the country would be independent, no longer blame the U.S. for draining their resources and imperialism.
Loved this video. Some people think statehood would help because we would be able to get debt relief and because it would be cheaper, BUT it would actually be more expensive to become a state. ALSO, most Puerto Ricans speak Spanish first, would they really allow a Spanish speaking island to become a state with all the racism currently going on? And what would happen to us in 100, 200 years if we were to become a state? Would we lose our culture, language, traditions?? #Independencia
PR ain't ready for independence, it'd wind up like D.R., Jamaica or Haiti. The power grid would fail in the first decade due to failure to maintain and there'd be blackouts regularly I believe some areas will stay in the dark. Don't get me started on sewage and water treatment, roads and other basic infrastructure. Sugar and Rum won't be enough to sustain the economy perhaps tourism may help but what raw materials does pr have? What can she manufacture or offer to the world? Right now PR needs intellectuals in the realms of political science, economics, manufacturing/production, military science, and a host of other areas in nation building. I wouldn't mind an independent PR but she isn't ready today and wont be for a while especially by the looks of the newer generations. Its becoming more violent and resembling drug and gang infested South and Central American nations.

There's a lot of ignorance surrounding Puerto Rican people and how we feel about our Home, but for the most part we do think staying with the US is best, but people also need to understand how insanely proud and hardcore about our culture we are as well, yes some do take it too far and say "well we can be an independent country!" well No, it's already all fucked up so to do that it would get even worse, Puerto Rico is truly in bad shape in a lot of places and I won't deny we need A LOT of help, but there are also plenty of very hateful and racist idiot people, NOT only white people, it's a messy situation, but as a very Proud and Politically active Puerto Rican myself, Yes, we do need help, and No it will not be easy at all, but to say Puerto Rico and our people are little more than drug dealers and all that is like saying white people are all uneducated inbred country people, or that all blacks are ghetto. Unless you've been to our home in the best and worst places, as well as know plenty of our people, you more than likely have little idea what you're talking about. #VivaAmerica#SomosHermanos
Nico _ it's not that, it's being realistic, we know we're not inferior trust me, but we are also not ignorant to the fact we cannot survive and thrive on our own, regardless if we are fully absorbed into the US or not, there's nothing anyone could do to make us have less love and passion for our people, home, and culture. It isn't bowing down, it's being smart and realistic, But I do understand what you mean and I'm glad to know that someone like yourself (I'm assuming you're not Puerto Rican) supports us, as you can tell by the comments many people aren't very loving or understanding to us.
Nico _ Hey buddy, this ain't an inspirational cartoon. You can't just believe in yourself and fix all your problems. You sometimes can't do something alone and it's fine to ask for help. As a son of immigrants I would be all for making PR a state and helping it be fixed and grow, but you can't do much of that when even as you try to help people they call you problem.
Kreed Rueda The attitude you voice in this comment of PR not being capable of running it's own affairs comes from the colonial dependence PR has with the US. The safety valve of running to the US when things go bad on the island drains away the initiative to improve things. I doubt PR will ever be made a state. In the long run, it may be tossed aside by the US as the American empire crumbles. Most Americans, regardless of race, don't consider PR part of the US, not so much from a political point of view, but culturally and racially.
*If they leave, they will become a 3rd world country so if you want what's worse for them then encourage this. 90% want to stay in the US, so should 10% have the final say?* You're a very ignorant person.
independence for Puerto Rico would be a disaster, these people are insane, it would be worse than Cuba, poverty is already rampant with the American economy and tax money supporting Puerto Rico, as an independent state it would be worse than third world. and I do know what I'm talking about, I grew up there and it wasn't easy.
Actually, Cuban universal health care and education aren't that bad. The country is come a long way since the 70s. Their poverty isn't nearly as bad as some Central American nations and have actually been active in aiding them in times of crises.

Enough is enough about government corruption on the island.
But in my opinion Puerto Rico is better to be a state and not independent, it is safer this way....
Lol where do you think the Cuban flag came from?
If PR becomes independent it will be as bad as DR, Haiti and Cuba ya crazy.. needs to be a state... Needs to move onto the future not fall back into the past...
okay but the US will still hold trade relations with us as we help them so much which is really the only reason why we aren't independent today giving us a lot of money
Statehood no damn it
Your position is not popular because people aren't thinking about the status of the island day in and day out; they're thinking of feeding their families with a 30K a year salary in a place where public aid is flimsy and where the local government is corrupt.

The 1st, 2nd, 3rd world paradigm is no longer appropriate for describing nations. There is no longer an eastern bloc, a 3rd world nation just means a nation that is neither aligned with the western or eastern blocs and has nothing to do with how functional it is as a state.

But eventually it's economy would recover just like Dominican republic.

Hello! Puerto Rico has been asked by the U.S. Government since the 80's if it wants to stay a territory, become a state or independent. It has been up to Puerto Ricans to decide since then. Anyone blaming the U.S. for it's problems is an idiot. Might want to look in the mirror.

I believe in an independent Puerto Rico just as I believe in an independent Alabama (my homeland) and Texas as well. But sadly, despite all the pro Puerto Rico independence supporters I hear and know, the territory can’t get more than 5% of the population to vote for secession or independence. That has always perplexed me. The U.S. needs to start subtracting states and territories, not adding them if we want our individual cultures to survive.
Because majority of them actually don't want to be independent. Without US mula, they'd be doom.
@Cashew Nuttel Probably true. It’s all about money more than sovereignty and culture.

Loved this video. Some people think statehood would help because we would be able to get debt relief and because it would be cheaper, BUT it would actually be more expensive to become a state.
