The Young Lords: Exploring the Legacy of the Radical Puerto Rican Activist Group 50 Years Later

- Fifty years ago this week, a group of young radical Puerto Ricans took to the streets of New York City to announce the formation of the New York chapter of the Young Lords. Formed in the same radical tradition of the Black Panther Party, the activists soon became a force in the community that inspired people around the nation. The Young Lords occupied churches and hospitals to offer services to the community, and educated people about Puerto Rican culture and history. They called for self-determination for all Puerto Ricans, independence for the island of Puerto Rico, community control of institutions and land, freedom for all political prisoners and the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Vietnam, Puerto Rico and other areas. While the group disintegrated in the mid-1970s, its impact is still felt today. Ahead of a commemorative event at the Schomburg Center in Harlem Friday, we speak with three former Young Lords: Denise Oliver-Velez, Carlito Rovira and Democracy Now!'s Juan González, who helped found the organization and served as its first minister of education. We also speak with Johanna Fernández, associate professor in the Department of History at CUNY's Baruch College. She is the author of the upcoming book “The Young Lords: A Radical History.”

Every group that cares and looks after the interest of the poor is “radical”
isn't that sad..
In my twenties, I told an older lady that I was a radical. She said "that's a bad word." I said "okay, revolutionary then!" She says that wasn't going to go over well either. I said well, they are both labels I embrace as an advocate and social justice & equality freedom fighter. If it's radical to not be cool with going along with status quo, then by all means call me radical. ✌🏼✌🏼✌🏼

In 1977 as a young Army recruit I a Chicano was having a conversation in the barracks with a Boricua brother. I distinctly remember the Young Lords being at center of our talk along with the Chicano Movement. To me together with AIM, Black Panthers and the Young Lords were the big 4 in this country. In my heart we still are. Resistencia!

I owe a great debt to the Young Lords, because I grew up in "El Barrio" in New York City to economically poor Puerto Rican parents, but who were immensely wealthy in
culture, family and language. I was only 9 or 10 in 1969, but I remember how the Young Lords were standing up to the mistreatment and discrimination of Puerto Ricans in New York. The Young Lords were labeled as radicals and militants, but in truth they fought for and struggled for equality and respect of Puerto Ricans and poor people in America.

The Young Lords also fed children, provided day care and provided health care, help the government was not providing, it was YL and Black Panthers that started free breakfast programs yet got labeled radicals and militants.
The young lords used the mistreatment of puerto ricans to expand a socialist agenda.

I was born in 1954 in Cataño we were very poor I was one of those skinny kids with a big belly because of bad nutrition. We moved to Brooklyn years later my sister became a Young Lord in 1970 I became a pro athlete , life has many turns and the struggle makes us wiser. Puerto Rico Libre !!

My wife Jeanette and myself were members of Radio Free People - an anti-war audio collective with studios in Soho on Mercer Street. We lived with the Lords at the church for several days and recorded a tape, "The Young Lords Occupy the People's Church." Miraculously, in 2019, I found what's left of that tape at Northwestern University in Evanston at their Oakwood library storage building. It had been converted from cassette to VHS. Not in great shape but still, part of the history. I also remember David Perez and Flaco and singing doowop at night. Great joy during very intense times. The neighborhood was with the Young Lords

Albizo Campos is Puerto Ricos Malcolm x, Assata Shakur, and Nat Turner, who was jailed, and tortured. Campos graduated from Harvard at the top of his class, and was denied the speaking opportunity, because Harvard did not want to publically announce it accepted Puerto Ricans, or, who else knows what more.

I had two cousins who served with the Young Lords in Philadelphia early 70s. At the time I didn’t fully understand what was going on because my family was not very outspoken about it. One of my cousins did tell me once that he was helping lots of people and children. I even had a copy of a handout with stories of the young lords and I think my dad took it away from me. I was about 6 yrs old when I first knew about the Y.L. Both of my cousins who served are now deceased. RIP

There are many black people on the island. The culture is profoundly African, our food like mofungo, our music Bomba &Pleina, santeria etc... My mother is 100% Puerto Rican and she is the color of Lupita N'yongo. Puerto Ricans are a multi colored people. Many times in New York you had black Puerto Ricans marrying black Americans. It's no different than a Jamaican marrying a black American. The only difference was our cultures and language differences. I don't like how some clearly Afro Latinos like these two women on the panel, try to make it seem like being Puerto Rican means you're not black. That is wacked 💯✊🏿✊🏾✊🏽✊🏼🇵🇷

We need to keep on educating our people, I’m 36 and didn’t know anything about the Young Lords until about 5 years ago. I’m a father now, my daughter will know our history and truth! I know first hand what it is to be hated because I’m a Latino. I was raised in a town of Florida -High Springs FL- my siblings and I were the only Latinos in the that attended school at Bell High School & elementary, at the time Elementary, Middle, and Highschool were all in one campus. I had to fight all the time, I hated it, it was pure Hell, to be honest, it still effects me till this day! But at the same time it makes me stronger, I wish I could talk to every person in that school, that bullied me, and that caused so much harm to me, mentally and physically, I would look them in the eye, and let them know that I love them, and I pray for them sincerely. God has always put them in my mind and thoughts, I still remember their names -at times I forget my own wife’s name- JK LOL! I hated them for a long time and I wanted revenge, but then... I got tired of hating them, i grew exhausted of plotting my revenge on a daily basis. That’s when I learned a very important lesson from the Man Above, it’s better to forgive and live your life peacefully, then to keep a grudge and be miserable. So, to all of you in Bell Florida that caused me so much pain, I hope you all will teach your children to respect and love to everyone no matter where they come from. PS!!!! Afterwards, we moved to Philadelphia -in one of the most dangerous neighborhoods-, shootouts and violence were the norm. I was more at peace and felt secured, compared to living in High Springs Florida. That should tell you how bad it was for me and my siblings.

I remember the Young Lords back in the 1960s-70s. They were good at organizing many of the marginal members of the ghetto community. They enhanced the identities of many ghetto youths. They were also very good at "getting in the face" of the local governmental leaders and the cops. I was always an admirer of the group. I think that any Puerto Rican in NYC worth his salt supported the outstanding group of neighborhood leaders. I learned alot reading PALANTE AND THE MOHAMMAD SPEAKS newspapers. I remember some of Juan's articles and they were outstanding. It's too bad that they didn't enjoy any real longevity over the decades. BTW, Denise tried to say Dona Felisa Rincon , the ex mayor of San Juan. I knew about Mariana Bracetti because my mom was born in Calle Mariana Bracetti in Santurce Parada 16 y media. My dad was the right hand man of Lic. Juan Mari Bras of the Puerto Rican Socialist Party (1961 - 1980). His name is Victor "Marcianito "Santiago. I'm sure that some of the Young Lords leadership remembers his name. I'm a sick man and moving on in years. Otherwise, I would probably show up at the Schomberg Center activity. There's no such thing as an Ex or Former Young Lord. The struggle continues against the Traitors & Sell Outs.
Ironically while the Young Lords, descendants of those Puerto Ricans who against their will were forced to leave the island, were calling for and demanding Puerto Rico's INDEPENDENCE, some INDEPENDENTISTAS in the island, the ones you'd expect more than anybody else to understand the reasons for those brothers and sisters to leave, do not consider those born and/or raised in the mainland, boricuas too.
Instead they're labeled traitors which I find disgusting.
In more than one occasion I've been told to move to one of the 50 states if I love the USA so much when I've tried to explain to them for example that ppl like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
are as much Puerto Rican as those born and raised in the island.
For these jerks the minute you step into that plane at the San Juan airport you stop being Puerto Rican.

I live in PR, born and raised, What really gets me going is people that have lived all their lives and have no intention of living here (PR) are in the states going around saying we want independence. They presume to know what we want and what our dreams are. They don’t.
We want to stop the privatization of public corporations, the gentrification of the island, to stop the use of the insular Cases, we want representation and a voice. We want Constitutional Rights.
Not independence. No one I know wants independence. I’m 60 years old, bachelors in nursing and masters in education. 23 year SUBA dive master, sailor and artist. In Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico has never been more than a profit center for the US. And a strategic strong hold in the Atlantic Ocean.
During the Spanish American war in 1898 the United States promised to liberate the inhabitants of Puerto Rico from
Spain's colonial rule but, had a change of heart when they ended up wining the war against Spain, instead of liberating the island of Puerto Rico they ended up invading it instead. On July 25 1898 16,000 heavily armed U.S. troops arrived and occupied Guánica, stripping away any self-rule or autonomy that Puerto Rico recently gained from Spain unfortunately the people living on Puerto Rico became victims yet again to a new colonial master in America, the U.S. government has controlled the island militarily, politically and economically ever since. In the early 20th century, the Puerto Rican independence movement was picking up steam on the island it was growing rapidly and embraced by multiple political parties in Puerto Rico. For example In 1914, the entire Puerto Rican House of Delegates demanded independence from the U.S. Instead, the U.S. responded by imposing the Jones Act of 1917, which mandated U.S. citizenship for more than one million Puerto Ricans . It wasn’t exactly a gift or a blessing either, because one month later, on April 2, President Woodrow Wilson asked Congress for a declaration of war on Germany. The point of extending citizenship to Puerto Ricans was to get about 20,000 more bodies into World War 1 and to stop the growing independence movement that was taking root and flourishing on the island. The sad truth is Puerto Ricans are both citizens and colonial subjects of the United States. Here's another example the Resident commissioner serves in the House of representatives but does not have any voting powers it can only talk and advocate for Puerto Ricans but is not allowed to vote on any final passing of Bills (not even those related to Puerto Rico) nor for election of the Speaker of the house or other officials. They also have a legislature whose will can be vetoed by Congress anytime.They have been conscripted to take up arms and die on foreign shores for the United States, but yet they are not allowed to vote for its president while living on the island. After the 1898 Spanish American war, Puerto Rico suffered an immediate barrage of economic disasters. In 1899 a hurricane leveled the island, destroying thousands of farms and an estimated $7 million worth of the year’s coffee crop. Rather than send relief, the United States government devalued the island’s currency by 40 percent with just a congressional wave of the pen every Puerto Rican lost nearly half their net worth over night and again, in 1901, Congress imposed an unprecedented assortment of land and property taxes that crippled it's economy even further, with 40 percent less cash than they had before, and higher taxes. Puerto Rican farmers soon lost their land and by 1928, 80 percent of Puerto Rico’s sugar cane farms were US-owned. The railroad systems, trolleys, and the San Juan seaport were also US-owned, along with much of the island’s infrastructure. In the past Congress has excluded or limited Puerto Ricans from access to federally funded programs such as Medicare, Supplemental Security Income and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (Snap). Or Earned Income Tax Credit, the island also receives half the rate of federal healthcare funding even tho the residents living in Puerto Rico pay the same amount of Medicare tax as do other U S. Citizens living in the other 50 states and it does not qualify for federal bankruptcy protection either once again proving that the island inhabitants are colonial subjects being exploited and abused by America. Everything in Puerto Rico is controlled by the U S. Puerto Rico's currency, banking system, international trade, foreign relations, shipping and maritime laws, TV, radio, postal system, immigration, Social Security, customs, transportation, military, import-export regulations, environmental controls, coastal operations, air space, civil and criminal appeals, and judicial code is all controlled by the United States empire. They even changed the name of the island to Porto Rico after the Treaty of Paris of 1898 and ended up changing it back in 1931 to Puerto Rico after a joint resolution from Congress repealed it 33 yrs later lol. They also passed gag laws in 1948 making it illegal to display or own a Puerto Rican flag even in one’s own home. It allowed police and national guardsmen to enter anyone’s home without a warrant and search and seize all property, regardless of probable cause. It also became a crime to speak against the U.S. government; or to sing a patriotic tune, to speak or write of independence, or to meet with anyone or hold any assembly in favor of Puerto Rican independence breaking this law would send you to prison for 10 yrs. It was eventually repealed 9 yrs later in 1957. But as you can see the desire for independence hasn't faded away in the hearts of Puerto Ricans yearning to be free. The United States cannot pretend to be a model of democracy for the world while it discriminates against 3.5 million of its own citizens in Puerto Rico, depriving them of their right to political, social, and economic equality under the U.S. flag and under the U.S. constitution.

Johanna Fernandez, author of the the Young Lords, looks like one of Malcolm X's daughters. No doubt the mixture of the Celtic Galician and African DNA (in Spanish speaking Caribbean) and the mixture of the Celtic Scottish-Irish and African DNA (in the English speaking Caribbean) results in the same beautiful cinnamon and caramel color. Denise Oliver-Velez looks like one of those dignified beauties found among French Creoles(again the Celtic-African mixture) in the French Caribbean.
