    thank you so much for this video! i was on a small spiral roundabout myself the other day supervised by my dad and i treated it the same way as a normal roundabout and could tell he didn't like what I did. This explains so much and also frustrating that driving lessons don't really cover roundabouts like this most of the time

    I HATE these bigger roundabouts cos I often end up in the wrong lane! At 2.52 I no doubt would have followed the black Punto and at around 3.12 I would have followed the black car in the distance, where the A5080 lane suddenly decides to become the M62W lane! Simply because in both instances it said A5080 on the tarmac with an arrow facing forward so one would assume that you would stay in that lane but noooooo! They just don't seem to make much sense. When I f*&k up, I either have to use mirrors and signalling to get into the correct lane or if traffic is really busy and it's a bit dangerous to barge in, I go as far as to take the wrong exit down one of the A roads and turn around!

    • @xZak-A-42
      @xZak-A-42 5 лет назад +8

      That's exactly what I was thinking, on the tarmac it says A5080 with a forward arrow but it turns out you had to enter the new lane that was forming instead. Like, what was the need to write it there if that lane isn't to that road?

    • @alisonwilliams4862
      @alisonwilliams4862 5 лет назад +1

      @@xZak-A-42 Indeed! Luckily, you don't have to encounter them that much if you just do city driving. They're only at motorway junctions really.

    Spiral roundabounds can be daunting for novice drivers but what helps me during trips to unfamiliar destinations around UK is simply using proper sat. navigation with 7 inch screen with animations of lanes ahead and which one use for entering the roundabound or any large junction. Once you are in the correct lane just follow arrows/ town abbreavations/ motorway numbers on the road. Proper sat. nav. takes lots of stress from driver`s shoulders. This video taught me that indicating on marked lanes on spiral roundabounds is not neccessary unless intention to change the lane after making mistake arises. Thank you for clarification!

    I'm confused, this video is giving conflicting advice to others I've watched on spiral roundabouts which say you move one lane to the left each time you pass an exit so the you're in the left lane when it comes to your exit but you're saying keep staying in the right - which is what the markings on this roundabout are saying but that piece of advice to stay right in general doesn't seem correct 🤔

      Try looking at one on Google Maps or something like that. A nice clear one is where the A5 crosses the B5120 going to Houghton Regis.
      When turning right from the dual carriageway, you approach in the right hand lane then, when the white line comes out on your right, you _stay left of it,_ and it delivers you to your exit.
      A slightly more complex one is where the A414 crosses the A1081. Say you're coming from Hatfield and want to turn towards St Albans, there are 4 lanes on the approach and you want the 4th exit.
      So you get into the right hand lane and stay close to the roundabout. Then there are 2 lanes that say "Sta" (for St Albans), so you stay in your lane, which will be the left of the 2, again, _stay left of the line that comes out on your right,_ and again, the lane delivers you to your exit.
      The same would be true coming from St Albans, and following the left of the 2 lanes to Hemel Hempstead, where it says "HH" on the lanes.
      If you want an even more complex roundabout, there's the Handy Cross roundabout on the edge of High Wycombe, above the M40, but there there are signs above the lanes as well as road markings, making it easier to just stick on your lane and get to your exit.

    Despite 34 yrs experience they can be a nightmare. You have to be aware of others not knowing the correct lane if new to the area. It would help if the responsible authority would at the very least keep the lines in good order . Or how about different colours???

    There should be a sign that shows you're in a spiral roundabout. Most of the time I'm listening to the sat nav, in the correct lane then bam theres a new lane to switch to and I have to quickly react.

    Would it be the same general guidance to use the right lane for the 3rd exit anywhere in the country? Thanks.

    • @taylorcarter831
      @taylorcarter831 5 лет назад +1

      It depends on how many exits there are. Most roundabouts have 3-5 exits, but I have seen a few that have as many as 7 exits. We have roundabouts ranging from 1-3 lanes. You always use the furthest right lane to turn right (you can sometimes the middle lane if the road markings say you can). At mini roundabouts that only have one lane, all you have to do is signal in the direction you want to go.

    Question: Do you have to indicate on spiral roundabouts when going right? I was taught that providing you know which lane you need to be in, staying close to the kerb and crossing a new lane as it appears doesn’t require signalling. Test’s in a few days.

    • @ashley_neal
      @ashley_neal  5 лет назад +1

      Ewa Szelast I teach to signal right until you’re in the lane you need, then cancel. Use a signal if it’s going to help anyone. If there’s nothing about, don’t bother. Good luck 👍

      @@ashley_neal Hi I wonder if I could ask your opinion. I'm trying to get my HGV licence but my concern is with a spiral roundabout just after leaving the test centre in Leicester. If you approach it from Waterside Rd and to take the fourth exit Thurmaston lane, using your method here approaching in the right lane and follow it round I end up in the middle lane which upon exit I'm on the right of the two lane exit. It's my understanding you can't change lanes whilst on a roundabout During a test. There's also the feeling someone who entered on the middle lane could follow around on my left . Thank you if you can offer any advice . The roundabout connects waterside rd ,Thurmaston lane, sandhill Av and Victoria Rd East.

    My thoughts:
    This must be the most daunting aspect of driving in UK. I wonder how visitors cope with these?
    I wonder if we should even call them roundabouts at all....maybe call them a 1way system.
    I also think a traditional 2 lane large roundabout would often do the job just as well & be a lot less confusing.
    Some spirals are better than others. Each one is a little different.

    • @igorkratka
      @igorkratka 3 года назад

      Visitors should use proper sat. nav. lanes animations when entering the country they are not familiar with. If they don`t, no wonder that they get confused, irritated and putting blame on ,,stupid roads,,. Spiral roundabouts are good idea. You just need to match them with drivers who take some effort to understand them. Once you understand them, they are not confusing anymore- just like with anything.

    • @ashley_neal
      @ashley_neal  5 лет назад +1

      The main reason it wasn't a problem was the left lane was heading off in a different direction. Notice the road lines change a couple of seconds after 👍

    • @billyporter1389
      @billyporter1389 5 лет назад +1

      @@ashley_neal It becomes a mandatory left lane at 1.29 which is 40secs after the van undertook you. I wouldn't call that a couple of seconds. The lane irrespective of the thickness or length of the lane markings does not have a continuous white line so you or the white van can cross over at any time. Would it have been illegal if the van undertook you in lane 1 and while you're in 2?

  • @dalriada842

    I only rarely encounter these. They are the work of the Devil! At least where I am in Scotland, they're poorly sign-posted and have faded or non-existent road markings. The road markings that there are are often obscured by traffic or bad weather. What benefit do these have that a normal roundabout doesn't?

  • @robp1316
    @robp1316 3 года назад

    I don't know why this 6 year old video popped up for me to see. I have always been told that these are not roundabouts but a series of traffic light controlled junctions hence the reason for not always following the past 12 o'clock rule. You follow the road signs and markings like you would any other road junctions. If the lights are part time or fail then the give way to traffic coming from your right applies like normal at any junction/roundabout.

    Spiral roundabouts? Wrong terminology. Definition of 'spiral': a continuous curve formed by a point winding about a central axis at an ever increasing distance from it. The road layouts shown don't do anything like this.

    sorry but your a driving instructor why are you sitting in the middle lane on the motorway?!

    • @dalriada842
      @dalriada842 4 года назад

      Probably because he already knew that the inside lane was going to filter off. That's another pet peeve of mine besides spiral roundabouts. Motorways should have off-ramps to leave. When joining a motorway, the on-ramp should become the inside lane. The old outside lane should close off. Road designers need putting up against a wall and shot!

    • @leec3052
      @leec3052 3 года назад +3

      The left hand lane is already signposted for a different destination at that point on that motorway. Plenty of examples of that on motorways where one lane filters early for an exit and the lanes to the right are for other destinations.

    • @leec3052
      @leec3052 3 года назад +1

      0:22 you can clearly see Lane 1 is for a different destination to lane 2 & 3. And he was gaining on the traffic in the left lane so bearing in mind the upcoming filter there was no point changing lanes.
