- Was the McLaren-Honda MP4/4 the best Formula 1 car ever? Honda's channel is joined today by motor racing journalist and broadcaster Louise Goodman to look back at the season this legendary model graced the race tracks and its domination in the hands of Ayrton Senna.
Different eras have different heroes and legends. Since its beginning in the 1950s, Formula 1 has had many excellent racers, engines, chassis and teams. But not quite like this one.
The McLaren-Honda partnership in 1988 provided a brilliant instrument for Senna and partnered with Alain Prost, they won over 90% of the races they entered with a large part of them taken with 1-2 finishes, becoming the norm for the Honda Formula 1 team.
The standout innovations of the McLaren team were their tailored gearbox and low line chassis, which were then paired with the Honda engine that had about 150bhp more than anyone else and improved fuel efficiency. The results were devastating for the competition.

The partnership between Senna and Honda will continue to be legendary and supernatural for years to come.
Will never be surpassed!
Ayrton Sena is my eternal hero.
McLaren-Honda MP4 / 4 is the machine where Senna became the world champion.
And in front of our eyes.
I can't forget the figure that started with an engine stall at the start, pulled out, and raised the fist in front of the goal.
Every time I visit the Mogi Honda Collection Hall once a year and watch the McLaren-Honda MP4 / 4, I think of that hot run.
I want the driver and the machine to come back again.
It's on my dream list to visit the Honda collection hall! Honda engines/cars are truly amazing

That car(chassis, drivetrain, driver, the whole) was, in fact, the APEX of car racing, it was poetry in motion...
the best human to ever tame racing cars, a british chassis, japanese power - all singing in total harmony, men and machine at their limits, seeking perfection, that is momentaneous... and forever elusive...
It's not just the car that is good, the driver makes the difference. Senna is the greatest proof of that, no one piloted this turbo monster like him.
Senna + Honda= Super natural Power
Controversial comment but I have always preferred the 1989 MP4-5. The noise of the V10 touches my soul
Did you Honda V10 beats the Ferrari V12.
everything in time was aligned , senna was at a mature stage in his career becoming a legend , Mclaren got the perfect chassis for the time dominating the tracks , and Honda was at is peaked of manufacturing performance beating crysler and becoming the 3rd largest in the world at the time .

Hands down the greatest car, driven BY the greatest driver. No funky dodads, aero winglets or clever software, this car was pure, as was the talent of it's driver *Ayrton* ... and have you heard that engine sound? OMG!!! I have a crisis every time I hear it.
My heart pains every time i see and remember senna. God have mercy.

FOREVER!!!🕊🕊🕊 # 12
It's now November 2021. And I'm watching this video again.......and again. This video clearly shows the absolute magic of that time in F1.
The best machine ever made by man ,also driven by the best driver
Look at it, its sitting there so lifeless and dead, its still waiting for its master to come back and drive it one handed at Monaco again..
It led all but 28 laps in 1988. Or 1003 laps led out of 1031 in total that season. That's 97,3%. No, not Mercedes, not Red Bull, not Ferrari, not Williams, not Lotus come close to that.
In 1988 it was sometimes 3 full seconds faster in qualifying than the second best car (San Marino and Monaco GP's) and often 1-2 seconds faster in the other races.
It had the best chassis (Gordon Murray's brilliant low-slung design), the best engine and the best driver line-up ever. Hardly surprising it was so dominant.
Hey Paul, slight correction - Steve Nichols designed the MP4/4 (not Gordon Murray): "Steve Nichols & The McLaren MP4/4 - The Story Gordon Murray Doesn't Want Told" ruclips.net/video/5Mz9nAzsLXU/видео.html

Honda is simply the best! Especially when they really want to create amazing cars. Now where’s is our S2000 Honda?
Yes please.
@@AmeerHamza-VaPr Out of all the Honda car I only like the Honda NSX so beautiful in my opinion.
@@kit266022 it is possibly the best and simultaneously the most understated sports car ever. Ferrari used 7 Gear paddle shifters 1 year after this in 1989... There's of the teams followed their steps pretty quick. 1988 was the last all h shifter year.
great car, great racer and above all that great heart senna had :) (because for one of his schools I could get proper education - thanks Senna !!)
Honda is simply inspirational! Couple that with Senna's superhuman ability and the Mclaren design Flair and you get the stuff of legends.
The best looking ever for sure, stunning!
This and the F2004 are my favorite
Ayrton Senna do Brasillllllllll. The best car and best driver forever. Hugs from Brazil.
Ladies and gentlemen, you are looking at the formula one car that was so much to so many. Last turbo charged beast to win a championship. It was the last but it went into history defiantly, winning 15 out of 16, giving a certain Ayrton Senna his first championship. Broke the records for constructer championship one two's. In Monaco, Ayrton Senna held pole position by putting in a lap that he described as otherworldly, leaving Alain Prost, ( himself no slouch around Monaco who secured 4 wins in the principality ) by 1.4 seconds. Make no mistake ladies and gentlemen, this car is legendary, for reasons I listed above. But they are mere statistics, how can I explain how it felt watching my hero secure his first championship? Formula one had a bright future it seemed, Ayrton too, and 88 was the end of what we now know as glitz, glamour, innovation, genius, greed, struggle. Yes ladies and gentlemen, it was certainly all of the above, but the future could be touched, held, grasped. But like the Mclaren MP4/4 it could certainly be never forgotten. That snarl of the engine could never be ignored.
I think been able to watch the Greatest F1 Driver behind the Wheel of the greatest F1 Car was something I can't just be more greatfull as a Auto Sports Fan.

@@holzwurmdonino6887 No ,i agree absolut with Ayrton but not Prost.Best Duo in F 1 Ayrton and Gerhard!!!!!
Senna and Prost best driver pair
It was a great car, but under technical, cutting-edge technology and results perspectives, it absolutely was Williams FW15C - 1993 season .. The outstanding electronic suspension made A. Prost win the championship as if there were nothing else on the grid. Noteworthy is that there was another Williams FW15C with CVT gearbox that has been tested , but given the 18K RPM and heat, it was not that reliable, but under engineering perspective, this CVT gearbox would always have the engine on its best RPM /Tork range, making the car way more efficient.
When Senna joint Williams 1994, the car was the worst ever, after removing the automatic suspension stuff. First Schumacher championship with the "suspicious" Benetton fueling system.
😃👍 Legendary!
The only car was declare a historical patrimony of a country, in this case Brazil. The real car is in Ayrton Senna Foundation in Brazil without engine.
Who miss ayrton senna Prost and Mclaren? Piquet, nigel mansel... omg!

03:10s is MP4/5b from 1990
ruclips.net/video/NeFqsWWG1qE/видео.html
Wayne Povey yes most newcomers to F1 make the same mistake you just made. If you look closely at the cars you will see that the McLaren team carried no onboard recorders during the entire 1988 Monaco weekend (infact McLaren carried no onboard recorders for the whole 88 season).
You can even see the car has no recorder when Senna steps out after crashing in Poitier in ‘88.
Asif Kapadia took artistic liberties with the 2010 film and “had” to include onboard footage of ‘88, but the only closest year Senna had an onboard recorder in Monaco was the 1990 season.
You can also immediately tell by the sound of the car. It’s not a turbo like in 1988 but naturally aspirated V10.
Also the advertising, rival team liveries and front nose of the car show its the MP4/5b from 1990.
@@gold333 Thanks. I'm not a newcomer to F1, I just didnt know that single, very specific fact as its not something I'd ever had cause to. It took Senna and Prost to tame this beast.
Senna’s not dead.
He’s just a lap in front of us.
1:55 both MP4/4 just passes other cars with ease.
Nice Marlboro logo
Yes .MP 4/4 is classic .
This car was designed by Steve Nichols and a fabulous McLaren team. Nothing to do with a Gordon Murray who claimed this success stemming from his utter and total flop and failure, the Brabham BT55. New published letters and documents show clearly, Gordon Murray claimed it falsely …….. dreadful behaviour. And also Ron Dennis is to blame here!
And Honda did it again with Red Bull. Bravo Honda. Bravo.
For me it is. What the engineers call lightning in a bottle.
The MP4/4 is the best F1 car and Senna is the best F1 driver
Like Montoya said once in F1 it is 80% car and the rest driver.
The greatest car
How many horsepowers and torque ? Why did jeremy clarkson say on the senna tribute it had 1200hp but when you search on google Wikipedia it had 660 or something like that ? Is it 1200hp in qualifying mode only ? How can such a big diffrence be between qualifying and racing mode in terms or horsepowers ?
@Ti Yo but if you look and search on Wikipedia the turbo era did have 1200-1400 hp but when you look at the races on youtube commentators walker murray and james hunt mentioned couple of times 660-750 hp in those years 1986-1990 i think. I think they never raced on max power only in qualifying
@Ti Yo yes thats about right the bmw had the most horsepowers 1400 so thats why i assumed that jeremy clarkson ment the Mclaren honda had 1200 hp. But now in 2020 qualifying and racing mode has the horsepowers is that right ?
Take a bow.....
I remember the.
3 Litre V12 TurboCharged Monsters.
1 season. Not what I would call dominant.
There never were any 3 liter V12 turbocharged monsters. Proved what you know.
The first turbo cars in F1 were 1,5 liter V6's. The V12's were 3,5 liter normally aspirated and Honda only had one in 1991 and 1992.
No doubt

No, it is not. It was the final year of the first turbo generation. The Lotus 45 was the best - no changes over 2 seasons and 2 championships.

Greatest F1 Car - F2004
I'd put the Ferrari 2004 and Mercedes 2016 at the same level of dominance
Sorry. Neither of those were a full 3 seconds faster than their closest rivals at any point during the season. Dominance can perhaps best be measured in amount of laps led. The MP4/4 led 1003 out of 1031 laps in the 1988 season. That means all but 28 laps in all of the entire 1988 season was spent leading. A whopping 97,3% .
The 2016 Mercedes led 1055 laps out of 1268 laps which is 83,2%.
The 2004 Ferrari led 785 out of 1122 laps which is 69,9%
You forgot to mention the excellent 1992 Williams which had quite a performance advantage. That too however led 867 out of 1036 laps which is 83,7%.
As fine as the 2004 Ferrari was McLaren, Renault and Williams all won a race each. In Monaco the Ferrari was clearly off pace since Schumacher qualified 5th some 0,53 seconds slower than pole sitter Trulli in the Renault (went on to win the race). One has to take into account Renault managed 3 poles in 2004, McLaren had one (Silverstone), Williams one (Canada) and BAR one (San Marino). That's 6 poles going to the competition. A wee bit too many for the 2004 Ferrari to be considered a true performance dominant. I'm going to go out on a limb here and claim that Ross Brawn's brilliant strategy mated to Schumacher's equally fantastic driving actually led to far more strategic victories than wins from pure pace alone. Then I haven't even begun to mention the tailored Bridgestone tires which were designed for Ferrari in mind and used their data as feedback. The car had a tire advantage not a chassis advantage per se. It still was the best car but by no means comparable to the MP4/4 in 1988 which was in a whole other league to the competition.
The bottom line is that had it not been for Schlesser's mistake and arguable inability to use his rearview mirror it would have been a 16 out of 16 wins for the MP4/4.
Some may argue that Senna and Prost also pushed the car beyond its limits too but the 2016 Mercedes was driven by the outstanding driver of his era Hamilton and the 2004 Ferrari driven by the outstanding driver of his era Schumacher.
But Mclaren-Honda touchs our heart and passion. Dream-Team
Prost has paid the price of choosing politics for immediate return over history.
it was senna ....more than mclaren
It clearly didn’t have 150hp more than anything else🤷🏼♂️. The Ferrari was comparable for power- if not economy
Sigh. Who cares about power? In F1 70% of the speed comes from the chassis. The *chassis* was way superior to anything the rival teams had in 1988. This is why Senna and Prost qualified a full 3 seconds (!) faster than the nearest rivals at Imola. I also reckon the Honda had the optimal torque curve since the engine was specifically designed for the new 2,5 bar max limit in mind. It's not all about peak power but how well the the engine can augment the chassis.
That is a s e x y car
Basic self-congratulation video 🤣...

@Crixus Mauperthuis to be fair, prost outscored him in 88, and then again in 1989.
@Crixus Mauperthuis hahahah 😂
@Crixus Mauperthuis Indeed. Honda has a long history of flavoring one driver over another. It was the reason why Honda ditched Williams because they refused to back one driver over another costing them the WDC in 86. Honda even told prost straight up that they preferred Senna.
