    Richrath was awesome. Obviously, his health took a major toll on his appearance and ultimately took him. I know it's a little sad to look at, but compare this footage to him back in the old days. Beneath it all, the enthusiasm was still there, and by & large, he still had his guitar chops, God bless him. He deserves respect and recognition as one of the great 70s rockers. RIP, brother.

    I'm not convinced all you commenting "get it". This is THE man. Gary Richrath IS the reason I, plus thousands of others, play guitar. Growing up, there were three tones I admired and wanted to emulate...Brian May, Eric Johnson and Gary Richrath. You will never find a more pure "Les Paul thru Marshall" tone anywhere. Gary...I wish you nothing but happiness, as that's what's you given me for over 30 years. You ARE and will always be REO Speedwagon!

      Kelly, I'm with you Brother. I've been a player all my life. I agree with your examples of "tone masters". Gary is and has always been the total package. Tone, melodic licks, and the knowledge(taste) of when to add speed to and back it off in his solo's. NEVER,EVER SLOPPY! Right-on Brother!

      +gregorylpetrie I love the way he plays when he,s not doing solos. He was always adding color to the song, that,s what made the songs so brilliant. And his solo,s were breathtaking , especially in the 70,s when they were a rock and roll band!

    • @kellyschneider2545
      @kellyschneider2545 9 лет назад +6

      +1600362 You hit the nail on the head! The "color" Gary adds to the song (not solo related) is what makes him so unique. (i.e. the intermittent one-note bends on the low E string, like in "Roll w/ the Changes" for example) Gary is one of a kind IMO.

    To all those commenting and insulting Gary's appearance - go to hell AND ...he could outplay any of you any day of the week. Gary's been gone almost 4 years now and everytime I see a video of him, young or old, I am mesmerized! The way that man's hands move along a fret board, such grace and such power!! If Eddy Van Halen is the father of tapping, Gary is the father of pinch harmonics! Listen to "flying Turkey Trot" many guitarists of the day would comment on how Gary could get this "clucking " sound from his guitar, yeah we call it pinch harmonics today.
    Thank you for uploading this video - no matter how far his illness might have dragged him through hell, he never misses a not and ALWAYS seems to get so much enjoyment from playing his guitar.

The sad thing is even Cronin made a comment about his weight when Gary wasn't even that big. Funny I've always thought that Kevin had some kind of a eating disorder, because the only picture on a album that he looked healthy in was on the back cover of the T.W.O. done in 72.

    Gary Richrath ‘s talent was immensely huge and his presence is obviously noted on all the great REO albums. He was a unmatched guitarist and one helluva player and songwriter as well as a vocalist. Without Gary, there would be no REO. He was captivating, loving, energetic and the HEART ❤️ of REO.

    I met Gary when they were trying to get their feet on the ground in the early 70s. They were playing the small clubs in my city just a hundred miles or so from U of I where they were based. Tremendous person, and in my view, the best guitarist ever! His style was unique and could not be copied by anyone, including his replacement. Seeing him the way he looked towards the end broke my heart. Being tossed from REO broke his spirit. I can’t forgive Cronin for that! It was Gary’s band and Cronin stole it! Simple as that! And shame on the others for letting it happen! What a gift he was to the world; musically and as a man. RIP Gary!👍🙏

    • @edarnold1426
      @edarnold1426 Год назад +2

      Greg I couldn't have said it any better. I hope KC knows that Gary's blood is on his hands. Gary was pushed so far away from what he wanted to play that he just gave up trying, and I think the other bandmates as well as producers went along with it. No it wasn't all his fault because the others went along with it and could have stopped this from happening. Yes they made it big with the sappy ballads, but I think they were good enough before to have made it, if MTV had came out earlier, however it came out at just the right time to catch those ballads which made them worldly known and loved. To me it was much more about timing than anything else, because one thing is for sure, Gary, Gregg, Alan, Neal and Bruce were all great at what they played, and with Keven singing they were all a team that couldn't be ignored. Anyway that is my take on R.E.O. Speedwagon. And when three of the main ingredients were removed, the Speedwagon died and never really charted again.

      Let's see you play with a bar band when you've been off the road for years and very ill and slam it out of the park like you were 32 again. He rocked it just like he always did and looked just as good as ever doing it.

    Does anyone notice. No whammy bar. Old school at its finest. The best was back in 1983. Contrary to what Kevin says.

    Major rock acts Styx, REO, the Nuge, and others (Head freakin East!) convened in Bloomington IL for a benefit concert to help Illinoisans after a devastating tornado that fall. Blo/No is where I attended college. I attended this concert, dubbed Rock to the Rescue. The Nuge and Styx deliver Coming of Age (Damn Yankees) and I thought that was the highlight. REO comes out for their set - and who joins them!?!?! Yes, Gary.

    Gary Richrath was one of my favorite guitarists. Not only was he a great musician his back story and style made him one of the greats! REO wouldn't have been the same without him and of-course Gary passed away much too soon.

    Most definitely one of my all time favorite guitarists of all time. I watch many of these episodes posted in this stage of his career and wonder if he managed to stop his drinking by this point because he sure as hell obviously still had the fire burning to perform. I would have loved to see what he would be doing musically now and years to come. He had his own sound that you could identify with in an instant whenever one of his tunes came on the radio. Went to one of the REO concerts in the late 70's and it was pure pleasure. R.I.P. GARY, my first time hearing your talent was Golden Country of which still remains my all time favorite REO tune. Best album for me was "You Get What You Play For Live" bought when it first came out and still have it.
