    ------------------------------
"Tannhäuser und der Sängerkrieg auf Wartburg" is a romantic opera in three acts by Richard Wagner, which addresses the conflict between profane and sacred love and redemption through love. The story follows Tannhäuser, who, after living in the Venusberg (a world of sensuality), decides to abandon the goddess Venus and seek salvation in devotion to Mary. He returns to the knights' court at the Wartburg and falls in love with Elisabeth, but his participation in a singing contest, where he reveals his stay at the Venusberg, leads to his social condemnation. In his search for forgiveness, he travels to Rome, but is denied absolution by the Pope. Eventually, Tannhäuser returns to find Elisabeth dead, who had asked to die to save him, and dies in her grave, with his redemption symbolised by a priest's staff that miraculously blossoms. The opera, which premiered in 1845, was based on medieval legends, and Wagner made several revisions over the years, creating different versions that were performed in various venues, including the famous adaptation for the Paris Opera.
