    ------------------------------
During World War II, the Japanese Special Attack Units (特別攻撃隊, tokkōtai), also known as shimbu-tai, were specialized units of the Imperial Japanese Army and Navy that conducted suicide missions, such as kamikaze aircraft, fukuryu combat toads, and various types of suicide boats and submarines. These tactics became essential towards the end of the war in the Pacific, when Japan anticipated an American attack and adopted the suicide defense due to lack of resources and the militarization of Japanese society, influenced by the bushido code. The units were first used in 1944 in the Philippines with some success, prompting their implementation into Japanese war strategy. Among the best-known kamikaze aircraft were the Yokosuka MXY-7 Ohka, a bomber-launched aircraft that was launched from bombers and then steered toward its targets, and other projects such as the Mizuno Shinryū and Nakajima Ki-115 Tsurugi, which never went into production. Rocket- and jet-powered aircraft, such as the Kawanishi Baika, were also developed, although the war ended before they could be used.
