Amazed to realize the kid from my 5th grade class who said Shy Guys were called "'HeyHos' cuz that's what they say when jumping out of a pipe" in Yoshi's Island was totally right.
How about in 3D, shyguys have a change in behavior depending on how many there are? Just 1, run, and hide. 2-3, they give chase as a group. 4 or more, they start throwing each other at the player.
Shy Guy’s are in Mario 64. Well Fly Guy’s and Snifits to be more specific. Also Goomba’s and Shy Guys appear together in Yoshi’s Island and New Island. They act a bit differently than in the main series. Jumping on them doesn’t kill them but just flattens them
Shyguys were in a toybox in the Paper Mario series. Why not have an enemy walk around with a jack in the box turning a crank. He doesn't attack, but unleashes Shyguys everywhere; unless the player jumps on his head knocking him out cold. Once knocked out the player can move on safely or he respawns and tries again, think Drybones. What do you guys think about that?🤔
I think it's possible, look at how many appearances Ninji has all of a sudden. And it too was an enemy in Super Mario Bros 2! There was even a Ninji that was inside Bowser's Castle in Super Mario World! So there could be potential uses for Shy Guys as well. Maybe donning a Shy Guy mask confuses Shy Guys enough to make them temporary allies to solve puzzles?
I know in some Mario hacks Shy Guys work like they did in Mario 2 where they couldn’t be stomped on and had to be thrown, I think it would be cool if they ever brought back the Mario 2 enemies they would have that mechanic and since shy guys can be killed with just a stomp in the Yoshi games they can be killed with a stomp if you are riding a Yoshi as well as the other enemies.
I feel like a good way to use this Shy Guy Badge in 3D would be: if any Shy Guy spots you, they call on all the nearby enemies to highlight the fact that the badges represent the "gang" they're in. They will keep calling enemies that are further and further away while chasing you, and they won't stop until they trip, which makes the badge fall off, or you defeat them. A good way to prevent a simple stomp on the Shy Guy's heads would be giving them a spiky hat or making them fly so they're harder to reach, meaning they won't trip over and lose their badge. In that case, you could Cap Throw or something. I really enjoy your videos, by the way. They are very entertaining, and also very high cuality/effort. Great job!
I believe shy guys might be considered more of yoshi's enemy than marios. As you see them way more in yoshi games. Edit: Didn't finish watching you address this
How would chasing others fit SHY Guys more than the very aggressive-looking Goombas??? I think it'd make more sense for them to be the aimless walkers, but I think them being unable to be stomped on directly or immunity to projectiles could be simple but good.
I knew I wasn't crazy! I had been trying to remember when did shy guys appear as enemies in a super mario game, and yet I couldn't think of one. Like, they're everywhere in the spinoffs, and the idea of them as enemies sounds even weird to me: they're just too cute for it
There's this one rom hack of new super mario bros wii, called newer super mario bros wii. Shy Guys appear in a single world, and they function like Rexes where you have to jump on them twice. They even have a boss Shy Guy called Samurai Guy.
Outside of the idea another commenter mentioned (letting them operate machinery and they run away if you get close) I had the idea of them being similar to goombrats, being goombas that turn at cliffs. Where they’re unique is that they can be ridden on like in mario 2. They instead have to be ground pounded to be killed. Maybe they are the opposite of 3d goombas where they try to run away from you if they see you.
I think they could function like Mario Bros 2 enemies, and you could stand on them. In one of the Mario Vs Donkey Kong games, a shy guy is used to cross over a floor of spikes (Mario Bros 2 does this as well, if my memory serves correctly). They could either be used for things like this, or just as goombas who are immune to being stomped. A lot of people suggest summoning enemies and stuff but I don’t see that working in a traditional 2D Mario game.
My idea is to lean into the “footsoldier” idea and bring back General Guy from Paper Mario 64 as a recurring enemy. Basically, whenever you encounter General Guy, he will start spawning endless waves of Shy Guys to chase you. These Shy Guys would be able to jump to follow the player, and if they’re defeated they would just respawn instantly. The only way to stop them would to defeat General Guy, at which point any remaining Shy Guys would forget what they were doing and just wander aimlessly.
Well in Paper Mario 64 the shy guys are extremely fast compared to goombas.. they could just keep them super fast and have them steal coins if they touch you. then they can run away (but not too fast for you to catch them with some skill) 👍🏼
Put it this way. If there's a Mario Maker 3, and they add Shy Guys as enemies... How would they work? That would likely change based on the game mode you're in, but I honestly think that the most likely approach i this scenario would be just plain standing on them. Moveable platforms that can hurt you if you walk into them from the side. One version turns at the edge, the other doesn't. It's not *that* interesting on its own, but could lead to some interesting combinations with other layouts and scenarios. Of course if they did that I'd kinda want them to add Birdo somehow as well. Imagine making a Birdo that spits out other enemies instead of eggs, that'd be hilarious.
I remember there being a sort of pseudo-goomba in Super Mario World, that I don't think has made a return to the main series games, ever again? At least not that I can think of. They were similar to goombas in that they just walked forward, but differed in that when you jumped on them, they would just become flipped over, and then you could kill them? At least, that's what I remember. I don't think you could pick them up like shells Anyways, they might be even more forgotten than Shy Guys
They are now known as galoombas. They got reintroduced in Mario 3D World, and they’ve made appearances in various games since then, like the spin-offs shy guys are in, even up to the newest Mario Party game that was just released. Yeah, they are more forgotten technically…but they are still remembered. Oh, and turning them over only allowed you to pick them up, but you could kill them with a spin jump; nowadays it’s with a ground pound.
@@Joosher56 it’s part of both series. Not only was its code name during development super mario bros 5, but Miyamoto himself regarded it as a mainline title. So yeah, it counts.
To me it would be cool but I also think characters don't need to show up in every game. They do have a lot of rep. For a 2D platformers maybe a mix of SMB2USA Shy Guy defeat mechanics alongside SMW Galoomba Mechanic. And they could roll like in Yoshi's Island when kicked. Maybe for attacks mix in some Color Splash for that and have them reserved for maybe Ghost Houses or Haunted Woods. I don't think the Shy Guys that worked for Wart ended up working for Bowser. I think Bowser's Shy Guys have just been around since Yoshi's Island. The Shy Guys of that worked for Wart I believe are friendly rival Shy Guys that partake in various events. I say this because of their Superstar Baseball description. Someone says kiddie in reference to Mario games, "why do I here boss music?" Miyamoto appears.
I'm starting to think that Shigeru Miyamoto is starting to have too many Yes-men around him and refuses to bring back characters he wasn't part of creating. Even the Paper Mario series has become stale with lots of generic Toads taking up the whole roster of characters.
Actually, Fly guys and Snifits are both enemies in Mario 64.
Snufits, but yeah
Amazed to realize the kid from my 5th grade class who said Shy Guys were called "'HeyHos' cuz that's what they say when jumping out of a pipe" in Yoshi's Island was totally right.
I think it would be cool to have them operating machinery and traps in the background, and running away when you get close.
Ooh I like that idea!
How about in 3D, shyguys have a change in behavior depending on how many there are? Just 1, run, and hide. 2-3, they give chase as a group. 4 or more, they start throwing each other at the player.
A courage mechanic suits them well. I'd like to see them presented as both a bit smarter and a bit more cowardly than the average Mario enemy.
Shy Guy’s are in Mario 64. Well Fly Guy’s and Snifits to be more specific. Also Goomba’s and Shy Guys appear together in Yoshi’s Island and New Island. They act a bit differently than in the main series. Jumping on them doesn’t kill them but just flattens them
fire breathing shy guys and ghost snifits are in mario 64
and fly guys
I think Shy Guys are disguised Toads who want to join Bowser's army.
Genius!

Shy Guys need to be in every Mario game! They're the best enemy!!

Like sometime said: they have arms. They could climb ladders, or even open doors, to follow you.

I’m absolutely sad they barely appear in the main lines, at least shy guys appear in the yoshi games.
Shy guys do have one very important thing goombas don't: arms
I'm just glad you can play as Shy Guy in Super Mario Party Jamboree. Long live the masked NPC!
There's this one rom hack of new super mario bros wii, called newer super mario bros wii. Shy Guys appear in a single world, and they function like Rexes where you have to jump on them twice. They even have a boss Shy Guy called Samurai Guy.

I think your thinking of the bandits
They should also bring enemies from Super Mario Odyssey back in addition to Shy Guys!
I dont like the statement of shy guys being the same as goombas when the diverse range of shy guy variants proves otherwise.
I mean, the series has ditched quite a bit of things. Like Wart from Mario 2 and most concepts and characters from the Mario Land duology,
They're only really enemies in Paper Mario games so I was wondering this too.
Always my top pick in Mario kart or other Mario spin offs
Put it this way. If there's a Mario Maker 3, and they add Shy Guys as enemies... How would they work?

Super Mario World 2 has them...
Yeah, yoshi’s island which is part of the yoshi series, not the super Mario series

doki doki panic characters.

I don’t Miyamoto is directly involved in Mario games anymore. He seems more focused on side businesses, like the movie and theme parks
Then why are they making Mario and Luigi Brothership and why did they remake PM1000YD?
I think they're interested in uniqueness and variety again
