THIS is the man to listen to! That bike looks like it was the first bike ever built, but almost for certain runs better than 999 of 1000 brand new ones! Well done sir!
One of the best bike instruction videos I've ever seen! Great camera angles, great instructions (not to brief, not to long), but most importantly: not only showing HOW to do it but also explaining WHY it needs to be done. Thanks!
I had a creaking noise on my bike too, but after taking apart the bottom bracket, replacing the bearings, greasing it all up nicely and putting it back together, I realized that the creaking noise wasn't coming from the bottom bracket at all. It was actually coming from the frame shock absorber whose screws and nuts were all rusty and dry and after cleaning those and the plastic washers on the inside, the creaking noise was gone. Also, thanks to the uploader, very helpful video. 5/5
Just what I needed THANKS! As a 44 Mum who never worked on bikes until recently I just fixed this thanks to you and I couldn't be more stoked. WOOHOO!! Lucky I'm not fussy about my fingernails though... hahaha :D
Thank you for this video. You are very thourough which makes your videos very helpful. I think this video is the best I have seen in terms of bike repair. Also wanted to mention that I am also a Canadian winter cyclist and the roads, salt, ice and snow make cycling very difficult.
Viewed a number of bicycle service videos, I found you to be the most distinct in both audio and video, precise in the mechanical explanation and function of each part, this is a great video for those needing a prompt before attempting to service their bikes, thx cj
Wow brother! I know there is always a video for what I want to do with my mountain bike. The challenge is finding the right video. Yours is the one I needed for my repair! Thanks!
thanks so much. It's weird and embarrassing, but somehow over a lifetime of bikes and mechanical stuff this little spot of the bicycle has always intimidated me into permanent procrastination...even with loose clunky gritty shit going on. Never again.
Thank you for a no-nonsense and informative video. Well explained and very clear. Good to see that I'm not the only one who doesn't ride a $4000 bicycle, BTW!
This is so helpful thanks. Im planning on doing a whole bike make over thing and needed to know how it all worked, Ill maybe upload a video in the coming future to see how it all went out thanks again. Cheers
I must have watched 20 bottom bracket removal videos and your video is the most simplistic and the most informative. This is my first time trying this myself and I have got the pedal stems and crank off. Now on to the bottom bracket! Kudos and thanks!
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! This is definitely the best bottom bracket repair video on RUclips. You explain it in depth in an honest way, unlike many of these fancy bike repair uppity mechanic dudes. I love that you're working on your rusty old bike, covered in grease. I get tired of seeing unridden, untouched bikes in repair videos. Very removed from my world...
Excellent video I like it when it is done on old working bike, these are the bikes that can bring up surprises.Would have liked to see what brand of grease was used.Very well done.
I just want to say that your video is the best one I've found on RUclips! I left it playing while I was taking apart and reinstalling by bottom bracket. Keep up the good videos!
I was looking for a video I can show my 12 year old so, he knew what to expect when we took his bottom bracket apart. This video is exactly what I'm looking for. Thanks for clear and simple explanation of the whole process.
Hi, Thanks for the info and well presented. My bb is grinding a little and was a little loose, I think my bb is the same as the one you have just serviced so I am now happy to try and service mine. Once again thanks for vid that concentrated on the subject and not on the presenter, some bell ends really do irritate with their ego tripping but you presented well
Shift your front derailleur into the smallest chain-ring position, and using your fingers, lift the chain off of the chain ring, and place it on the frame where the bottom bracket is. With the chain separated from the cogs, you should be able to get an idea of how smoothly the bearings in your bottom bracket are rolling. If it doesn't turn freely, you should service your bottom bracket. Something else to check if you are hearing a creaking noises, is your saddle. Saddles can creak too!
Just one more thing!! When this guy devides only work on the bike is needed....he's not shy about NOT TALKING ANYMORE!! THIS is when you know this guy JUST WANTS TO MAKE A GOOD INSTRUCTIVE VIDEO! - 10/10 to this guy !!
Thanks to this video, I have a new bike. This video as well as the few special tools I purchased from Amazon gave me the confidence and expertise to remove and lubricate the bottom bracket! The noise from the bottom bracket was driving me crazy! My six year old bike feels like a new one! This video is spot on! Thanks so much for all the details and the great angles to see how to do it!
Great video. I remember doing this without any instruction as a teenager long ago and making needless errors. Your video is going to save people a lot of headaches.
My son's bike has issues of ticking noise from the crank and wobbling crank. This video is a bit old but very to the point and informative. Thank you very much!
just replaced bottom bracket bearings using your video as a guide. good job I looked at the video first, or I would have done it wrong. All's good now, thank you, great help.
Thanks for the video, it's very helpful, specially here in Brazil where this 3 piece system bb is very common. You're very concise and patient too. Thank you again for sharing. Success for you and your channel!
Thanks friend! Your directions are by far the most simplistic and clear around the channel. I am attempting to set up a single speed bike with no knowledge at all and suddenly this part became crystal clear! I 'll search for other videos you have.
Good job buddy .I work on a lot of mechanical things but not bikes. Instruction was clear and easy to follow. My son appreciates your effort because I was able to fix his bike easily.
Excellent!!! The best and most clear how to service your bottom bracket on an old bike. I only have old bikes and it's only the moving parts that wear out over time.
Fantastic tutorial. A difficult job made easy. So easy to understand unlike some making it so difficult to understand and scare the heck out of you. Thanking you once again. Enjoyed watching it and learnt so much from you.
Thank you for showing me the several ways in which I botched my otherwise splendid overhaul today. No.. SERIOUSLY, this is an awesome video and definitely worth the 20 minutes it took to digest!
Absolutely helpful for me, I have watched other videos from your channel, stuff became very clear to me! My wife her bike is really top notch again now!
I spent 7 hours yesterday doing all the bearings on my MTB. My advice - fuck the cleaning and re-greasing, get new bearings from the start. Pair for the BB, and a pair each for the wheels. I sorted my front wheel right out, but the back wheel sounds even worse now after I cleaned and de-greased.....same for the bottom bracket! So, a lot of time wasted trying to do it without buying bearings. Getting some today :) I got a crank puller for under 15 quid in my local bike shop..highly advisable.
Awesome video, I learned a lot! This is one of the only videos I have seen that goes into detail explaining every part and how to fully disassemble it, bravo!
I just wanted you to know that your video just saved me ALOT of time and money because I was so frustrated with my bottom bracket probs. This video fixed everything (noises, friction, etc.) and to think it was all caused by the locking ring not being tight enough. Furthermore, this video and this one alone provided CLEAR, FOCUSED CLOSE UPS. And even further instruction if your bike varied a bit. PERFECT INSTRUCTION VIDEO.
Great tutorial. I replaced mine with a sealed BB. It was confusing figuring out what size to buy, but the guys at nashbar were super helpful. Great video one of the best on youtube thanks again.
For cleaning, I just rub with a dry rag. If there are a few stubborn spots, just drip some oil (or chain lube) on them and continue to rub. In terms of grease, at home I use White Lithium Grease. In this video I'm using the stuff they have at the shop. It really doesn't matter which type you use as long as you aren't mixing two different types of grease together (which you won't be doing if you wipe everything clean before adding the new grease).
This is an excellent video with great instructions and just the right level of detail. My comment is not an advertisement for Park Tools -- but rather than try an international tool source -- which we have all had limited success with - I'll just say that the Park Tool HCW-5, and HCW-11, and CCP-22 are the exact tools needed to do this job well. They aren't cheap, so look around for various sources for them, either new or used.
Oh man you saved my butt. I just took apart a similar system and in cleaning it i mixed up the orientation of the bearing surfaces. Thanks for making such a clear video. It really helped me out.
I'm restoring an old 1980s Apollo road bike with this crank/bottom bracket setup and have been looking for an easy to understand tutorial for disassembly so I can prep for repainting and parts replacement. THANK YOU for this video! it was extremely helpful!
i was getting tired searching then i say this one thank u very much all the other videos was not what i was looking for an u went step by step which was great thanks again
Hey man, what a great video, just subscribed and hope to watch others soon. You are clear and concise and easy to listen too, oh and informative - appreciated, thanks!!
Thank you for that most detailed. I have work only on cars all my life, this really help to show how things work and how to dismantle check and rebuild, also gave me the names of the tool I required I went to Halfords big letdown only managed to get the crank puller? And your bikes make and model looks the same as mine. Mine is a 14 year old Raleigh.
Very well done! I just ordered a bike and will be assembling it myself. I've never done it before and l am looking forward to the challenge of learning something new.
Excellent! Nicely detailed, well explained video. I started bicycling a few months ago. I cannot help thinking that I am learning about bicycles the hard way... by doing things wrong and then paying the price (figuratively, if not literally).
Well done!! Great information from the very start to the finish. You my friend are a great teacher!! In fact, I was so impressed that I went through the effort of establishing myself and becoming a first time commenter!
Thanks for making this. Most of the videos I found worked with the more modern sealed cartridge type, and I had to dig through a bunch before I found yours, where the spindle/cup/cone/bearings are separate. My only suggestion would be to indicate the kind of bottom bracket you're working with (unsealed cartridge? not sure..) in the title, description, or keyword section to make it easier for people to find it.
Great stuff man, thanks a lot! This gave me all the info and the confidence I needed to get an old bottom bracket out of a bicycle that I'm rebuilding.
The best cup and cone, bottom bracket vloge I have seen to date and I have seen some good ones, than you for your time and effort David from Northampton England 😊.
Thank you so much for this video! I rebuilt a bike I pulled of trash pile as a covid / learning project. I feel if I had seen THIS video earlier - I wouldn't be replacing the bottom bracket a 2nd time a year later. I see what I may have done wrong with your clear instructions.
To the best of my knowledge the crank puller tool is universal for all modern bikes. I've only ever known bikes to have one size of threads on the cranks, and I've done this task on bikes from as far back as the 1980's. I hope this helps!
Thanks for the video. My MTB has the exact same config of bottom bracket so it was a great help. The bearings were grinding so I pulled it apart to discover one set of bearings had completely disintegrated,
Fantastic video sir. Could you mention and show products you use for these videos, like cleaner for your ball bearing and parts and the grease? Then you have perfection.
My pedals shift side to side about a half centimeter and it creaks sometimes. Is there and specific thing I should tighten or do I have to replace the entire assembly. I also bought the bike new 6 months ago....
NOW I see why you strap milk crates to your bikes - makes it a lot easier to flip them over and work on them! Thanks for another great video
THIS is the man to listen to! That bike looks like it was the first bike ever built, but almost for certain runs better than 999 of 1000 brand new ones! Well done sir!
heheh very funny made me smile, right i thought that too its like this bike got a lot of torture ^_^
99c bike still alive
tq. terima qasih
Old shop teacher here, grade of 100 for the demonstration, nice job !
Among videos I have watched for bottom bracket, this is the best informative and interesting to watch. Thanks man!
Yeah man everyone else made it look more complicated than it is
You are the best how to video person I've seen. No wasted conversation. keep it up. learned a lot. Thanks
This video may have been around for a while, but more relevant than ever for fixing my mountain bike in the middle of all the pandemic shortages.
Glad to hear!
One of the best bike instruction videos I've ever seen! Great camera angles, great instructions (not to brief, not to long), but most importantly: not only showing HOW to do it but also explaining WHY it needs to be done. Thanks!
B
English is my second language but i can understand him very clearly, he's the best bike repair instructor on RUclips.
WOOHOO!!
Lucky I'm not fussy about my fingernails though... hahaha :D
Awesome, that's very exciting. Glad the video was helpful!
9 years since you put it up and still super useful - total face-saver as I tried to put my kids bike back together! Thanks a lot.
Glad to hear!
This guy makes everything so clear unlike other videos where theyle leave out stuff
this is hands down the best and most useful bike video i have ever seen
An excellent explanation that Mr Hoyle should be proud of. An example for all of us to emulate. Thanks.
This is the BEST tutorial I have ever seen. I feel totally comfortable tackling this myself now. Right after I buy those tools.
Still the best tutorial on the subject even after 12 years
This is so helpful thanks. Im planning on doing a whole bike make over thing and needed to know how it all worked, Ill maybe upload a video in the coming future to see how it all went out thanks again. Cheers

you are simply grate
thank you......

Best video I’ve watched on this subject. Goes in-depth on “how to do it”. Plus NO annoying music and captions. Well done CJ.
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! This is definitely the best bottom bracket repair video on RUclips. Need to service the crank bearings on my bike soon and this was a big help. Great vid, Thanks!
I was looking for a video I can show my 12 year old so, he knew what to expect when we took his bottom bracket apart. This video is exactly what I'm looking for. Thanks for clear and simple explanation of the whole process.
This video was awesome.... clear directions. No fuss. I was going to bring it into the shop but heck.... I can do this!
Hi,
Thanks for the info and well presented.
My bb is grinding a little and was a little loose, I think my bb is the same as the one you have just serviced so I am now happy to try and service mine.
Once again thanks for vid that concentrated on the subject and not on the presenter,
some bell ends really do irritate with their ego tripping but you presented well
You Sir are a true Canadian, riding your bike through the Winter. Outstanding!
thanks. I finally see/understand the need for the "taper" . thanks. Well done, even after eleven years, you still are teaching.
Glad to hear, thanks!
Shift your front derailleur into the smallest chain-ring position, and using your fingers, lift the chain off of the chain ring, and place it on the frame where the bottom bracket is. This guy has such an awesome and easy explaining manner! Bike teacher of you tube award to you brah!!
Thanks ! 9 years later, still relevant. That was exactly what I was looking for.
Thanks, glad it was helpful!
This is a great video on how to do maintenance on the bottom bracket of a mountain bicycle. Very easy to watch and follow through your instructions.
I cleaned and adjusted by bottom bracket and crank with you today! Perfect! Many thanks!
Congratulations, this is the best video for bottom bracket service ever!! Thank you
Great video. I remember doing this without any instruction as a teenager long ago and making needless errors. Your video is going to save people a lot of headaches.
You where right! I removed it, and kinda "forced" it into place... Might have ruined the bottom bracket slot itself, but it works like a charm now ;)
My son's bike has issues of ticking noise from the crank and wobbling crank. This video is a bit old but very to the point and informative. Thank you very much!
just replaced bottom bracket bearings using your video as a guide. good job I looked at the video first, or I would have done it wrong. All's good now, thank you, great help.

Super helpful video for a complete novice! Very clear instructions with great video detail. Thank you so much!
Super helpful! I watched a guy take off a bottom bracket tonight at my bike co-op now I know how he did it. Thanks!
Thanks friend! Your directions are by far the most simplistic and clear around the channel. I am attempting to set up a single speed bike with no knowledge at all and suddenly this part became crystal clear! I 'll search for other videos you have.
Very clear verbal explanations and accompanying visuals. Concise yet full of just enough explanation. Thank you!
I've just replaced the bearings on an old Raleigh i'm using for commuting and this video has been a great help. Thank you very much!
Good job buddy .I work on a lot of mechanical things but not bikes. Instruction was clear and easy to follow. My son appreciates your effort because I was able to fix his bike easily.
It was so hard to find a proper explanation on how to position the bearings. You, sir, helped me a lot. Thank you!
No problem!
No additional advice, it sounds like you are doing all the right things, just keep working at it!
Thank you for showing me the several ways in which I botched my otherwise splendid overhaul today. No.. SERIOUSLY, this is an awesome video and definitely worth the 20 minutes it took to digest!
i dont know where the hell you find these dirty ass bikes but i really appreciate your great videos and i subscribed
Absolutely helpful for me, I have watched other videos from your channel, stuff became very clear to me! My wife her bike is really top notch again now!
Very appreciative of this effort. The detail here is comprehensive without being too much. Keep up the great work!
Where the hell is the tool list?
Thank you so very much for the information. You saved me about $65 going to the bike shop ! ! !
Many thanks from Vietnam. Your tutorial videos are quite clear. My Giant bike is similar with your green one, so it is very easy to follow.
cheers!
Thanks for the video. I have seen many other similar ones but yours is better because you explain how how the tools work to remove the bottom bracket.
Thanks. By far the best tutorial I've seen.

Nice work! Glad the video was helpful.
thank you so much for this, i come back to this video often just to refresh my memory. concise and to the point !
No problem, I'm glad it's still helpful all these years later!
I'm restoring an old 1980s Apollo road bike with this crank/bottom bracket setup and have been looking for an easy to understand tutorial for disassembly so I can prep for repainting and parts replacement.

really admire your effort in helping people with your knowledge. loved the video, very usefull. keep up the good contribution to the society. Thanks
Excellent job,and the way you explained everything. Like a pro.
I'm getting noise and rumble from my BB so this will be useful when I open it up to take a look.
Thanks from a US based Hoyle.
Brad

Great stuff man, thanks a lot! This gave me all the info and the confidence I needed to get an old bottom bracket out of a bicycle that I'm rebuilding.
Great! Very clear and precise step-by-step explanation. Really useful. Thanks CJ
The best cup and cone, bottom bracket vloge I have seen to date and I have seen some good ones, than you for your time and effort David from Northampton England 😊.
Thanks for share your skills with the rest of the people, from MEXICO thanks a lot
Fantastic video . Excellent instructions and video coverage . Wish you offered auto repair videos . Great job .
Thanks, glad to hear.
Great tutorial!! By "Canadian winter" you mean...east of the rockies. LOL. Thanks for the vid.
It's been said many times here but I'll say it again... GREAT VIDEO! Thanks for taking the time to make it.
Thank you so much for this video! I rebuilt a bike I pulled of trash pile as a covid / learning project. I feel if I had seen THIS video earlier - I wouldn't be replacing the bottom bracket a 2nd time a year later. I see what I may have done wrong with your clear instructions.
No problem, I'm glad it was helpful!

Thank you so much for this. Super thorough. I would've made some crucial mistakes (and already have made some) if I hadn't seen this video.
Excellent video. Made me understand what I was doing wrong and the special tools I needed to complete the task. Thank you!
