She's not a dramatic coloratura, she just projects more in her lower middle than most coloraturas, whose voices tend to disappear below B or C. She sounds louder way up high because she has an unusually well developed super head voice that is smoothly blended into her head voice.
What you described is a dramatic coloratura. There is also a video from the Met if her doing Violetta which is a dramatic coloratura role and you can see that she is true dramatic coloratura.
JENNIFER! I love when I find actual FRIENDS and fellow singers in the comments of RUclips vids XD. I love Erin. She's amazing. I always feel like it's less important to stick singers into endlessly debatable fachs as opposed to assess whether they can sing a role beautiful in the context of the house and their colleagues. There is a ton of overlap in this region of lyric/ dramatic coloraturas. :)
This is amazing. I saw the production on the LiveinHD and she repeated her performance again. The last note she SINGS is an Ab ABOVE a high C. I believe that I read that this is the highest note that's ever been sung on the stage at the Met.
As a technically savvy coloratura myself, ANYONE who leaves critical comments after this flawless performance needs to get up there and sing this with as much technical precision and ease and then come back here and reassess #eyeroll. "I'm a voice teacher" my rump. Y'all are really sad, sitting behind your laptops grasping tightly to your NPR tote bags, self-righteously analyzing singers' flaws while drenched in the sadness of your limited careers and lives. Erin is a beast, and if you can't listen to singers without tearing them apart and criticizing them to exhaustion, I think that says a lot about you boo...
I also think you can't criticize after just hearing a recording. It is totally different to hear live. And this isn't even a studio recording, which is the next best thing. Greater voices are also more easily sound worse in recording. For the record, I thought she was absolutley amazing in this recording. And Morley's resume can confirm her amazingness. But the more fame a singer have, the more critisim they face for some reason.
il faut ce genre d'interprétation pour se rendre à l'évidente : Rachele Gilmore a placé la barre très très haut tant au niveau technique que pureté de la voix, c'est limpide et très agréable à écouter et à réréréréréécouter.
I saw it tonight live. She's definitely got a bit more vocal weight than many coloraturas, but this recording makes her sound much louder than she actually is. For what it's worth, Erin Morley and Kate Lindsey were amazing.
This is not a Wagner opera but it still is opera and good music. To turn it into a Broadway musical is ridiculous. Sher seems to want to outdo Zeffirelli. The first and third acts are over the top in terms of production. I can't understand that the Met would put up with this production. Is it a sign of things to come? Then serious opera fans should look somewhere else.
A little overdecorated. As if the original aria isn't ornate enough! Offenbach scholars agree that it was originally written in G, not Ab, but was changed later in the creative process. So the top notes should be D's, not Eb's, and certainly not the Ab's that Morley sings here. Yikes, it hurts my ears.
Dave Glo Not only that, but it is very foolhardy to sing the upper register like verismo. Natalie Dessay may have started a tradition but an unsafe one. The notes above the staff should ideally be thin or covered. They will penetrate over the orchestra and be more beautiful. Sutherland sang this and had her voice to the end of her life because she did things correctly.
PaoloDatemiPace I am not only a soprano, but a teacher of singing. The extra air pressure is the problem for the upper notes that actually wear out the vocal cords. A thinner but more concentrated tone is however more beautiful.
zamyrabyrd You're right about the air pressure, but completely wrong about a 'thinner but more concentrated tone,' and even more wrong was what you said about how notes above the staff should be 'thin or covered.' And considering just how many voice teachers I have encountered (some of whom are at major institutions) who are horrible technicians, your purported credentials mean nothing to me.
am I responding to this four years late? Sure. What...uh what do you think about this is miscast? People come out here and say this shit and never back it up. Come on then, back it up. What is wrong here? I think it's an exemplary take on Olympia personally.
She sounds awful here. Really too much effort. Imagine how beautifully Rachele did these ornaments and then was never even brought back to do anything ever again. And sounded better than all of them
Had the privilege of watching her perform this live at Carnegie Hall alongside my choir. Such amazing talent!!
This is what people mean when they say singing is a sport.
She is spectacular. Which is precisely the point.
I just played 5 performances of Hoffmann (orchestra) and I thought our Olympia was good! Ms. Morley is nothing short of spectacular here.
C'est la meilleure version que j'ai pu voir!😍🤩
I like the way she does the ending. Very cool.
Damn, she flexed that G# at the end like a cheeky doll bastard! 👏 Can't say I'm unimpressed!
I think this is the most chaotic and unique performance of this aria I’ve seen 😂
Fantastique! Can't wait to hear her Met debut in the same role on September 26, 2017.
Wonderful vocal fireworks! ❤
Wow! This one I did not know before... but it came to me as a positive and enthralling shock. Bravo!

And that's also because she use to sing Strauss, the squillo she needs for that
This is a very punchy lyric coloratura.
Watch it live in 2017 😎. Was exact same like this record. She is magician.
The best Olympia I've ever heard.

Rachelle Gilmore did it better. She is too much of everything
you should hear Natalie Dessay's version. She is the very best one!
Completely agree. The tone is unbeatable compared to others. She doesn’t sound anemic
See Luciana Serra.

Watched it in the company of a bipolar acquaintance who reckoned it was an A flat.
I thought that was Rachele Gilmore who sung the highest note (according to other comments. I'm not very knowledgeable with this art form)
Amazeballs. She really is impeccable! As a coloratura myself I have MAD respect for Erin!!!
It's an A
David Birnbaum You might want to read up on Mado Robin
this is amazing

Singer you may be, but you're no critic. "Let's hear you do it" is the response of a fangurl, not a serious and knowledgeable lover of the art.
We're here to encourage the current and new generation of singers! THANK YOU!
Wow.... your comments are remarkable, to say the least. So are you the leading expert in coloratura? Do tell your audience more.
Elle Valera Bingo!

Many thanks and all my love!
Look for her to sing this aria at Carnegie Hall on July 12th and 13th, 2019.
I don't know who's in charge of your DVD productions.... but I'd even buy this dress rehearsal recording. This is great!
I'm new to opera and was looking for the context of this song after hearing it performed at a concert. Thanks for the upload! :)

Me encanta Erin 💕🥰
So fabulous
People who are complaining about this video--go see the "around the world" performance. She's amazing!!!!
Yes. She definitely finessed her coloratura. Love that version more
@@danielng7795 I mean, she's also on the Met stage and they're whiny on YT, like
I discovered the Doll Song when I was 16, and spent the whole summer singing it!
Missa Solemnis in Chicago June 2023 could the music be any different? Am so looking forward to it!!
starting at 2.30 ..that's marveleous
Brava!
看了这个之后,我再也不期待这个版本的全剧了。。。
Huh. So how many women were hired to be Olympia? Looks like there were three, and each one does something unique with the role.
there’s only one singer; the others are dancers
Are these costumes from another production? I recognize them haha!
Same one that we saw with Kathleen Kim and Joseph Calleja
I THOUGHT SO! Thank you! This Olympia is a little better in my opinion but Kathleen Kim was great too!
+mamascarlatti and Rachele Gilmore
Никто в Метрополитен опере не сравнится с Рейчел Гилмор в роли Олимпии
Why is Olympia sometimes portrayed as a Ballerina?
we watched this in school wtf????
Uuum, yeah....
Wow...was that a high G @2:48?
A flat or g sharp
Hmmmmm not what i expected!! Too much loud version
That's cause she's dramatic coloratura as opposed to a lyric coloratura that this role calls for.
I saw it tonight live. She's definitely got a bit more vocal weight than many coloraturas, but this recording makes her sound much louder than she actually is. For what it's worth, Erin Morley and Kate Lindsey were amazing.
Haha! You know! Expectation vs Reality

dunrob36 Yes! And it is Offenbach Opera :) Offenbach make a fantasy opera like Wagner did but in a natural way
If you don't have the ease of the top, don't do those optional ornaments. It sounds ridiculous to scream them..
Natalie Dessay, Sabine Devieilhe, Rachele Gilmore, they all perform this aria better than this lady whom I respect for trying.
Could you imagine any of them singing the Missa Solemnis😂? NO
A little overdecorated. As if the original aria isn't ornate enough! Offenbach scholars agree that it was originally written in G, not Ab, but was changed later in the creative process. zamyrabyrd And Dessay's numerous vocal problems had nothing to do with "treating the upper register like verismo."
This is really too bad. Leave it to The Met for yet another miscast.
Ryan Engstrom How so?
Oh my god!'shut up!! Enjoy the music.
But your late, she'd perform it already in 2015 & 2017 so, she is good. But you don't really appreciate her effort.
am I responding to this four years late? Sure. What...uh what do you think about this is miscast? People come out here and say this shit and never back it up. Come on then, back it up. What is wrong here? I think it's an exemplary take on Olympia personally.

Exagerada, no entendió el personaje
I heard Christina Ramos first little bit compared to this. She is terrible yet Christina is amazing
Sarah Green shut up! You better leave and don't watch because there is no competion here
