Birds need their feathers to be undamaged, properly hooked in and free of oil and debris, for weatherproofing purposes and preening is the means by which they do that.
@marianagama4464 there are 600 million mourning doves in the continental US and an estimated 20 million are harvested every year. It isnt 1860, species dont go extinct in this country from hunting anymore.

I've had a similar situation on my porch since two mourning doves decided to build their nest on it. Got to watch the whole process: firstly, the building the nest, then the two eggs and incubation period, the hatching of the eggs, the shared duties feeding the babies. Lots of cooing and chirping during feeding and grooming sessions several times a day. What an education they've been. Now the babies are growing their flying feathers and presumably are about to get some flying lessons. Lots of photos and videos of each stage of the story. Both babies hatched on May 31 --aye, on me very own birthday! I find them to be very gentle, loving beings who seem to understand and appreciate the respect I've shown to them while sharing the porch with them during the late May and June weather.

I never seen these mourning doves in person because they dont live here in Hawaii, but I still see zebra and spotted doves. I always see baby doves at school. They like that baby mourning dove ♥︎
